0-RINGS be used with many media, including aggressive media, at both low temperatures and very high temperatures if an appropriate material is chosen. The information below is limited to the use of the O-ring as a static sealing element.
O-RINGS
The O-ring is the most widely used sealing element particularly for static duties but also, within limits, for dynamic duties. O-rings are not only used in hydraulic systems; they are used universally in almost all technical fields. They can

Installation and design information Housings for O-rings are generally recessed at right angles. The groove depth and groove width dimensions necessary depend on the particular cord diameter. If additional support rings are installed, the width of the groove has to be correspondingly increased. The dimensions are given in the dimension lists for O-ring housings. The volume of the housing in these lists is designed to be about 25% greater than that of the relevant O-ring. This is necessary because of the high thermal expansion, or possible swelling, of the elastomer. The O-ring retains its sealing effect by radial or axial deformation in the different types of housings. When subject to pressure, the O-ring is pressed and deformed against the groove flank away from the pressure. With increasing system pressure, the total sealing pressure force increases. O-RINGS
Selecting the correct O-ring dimension O-rings are subject to residual deformation (compressive set) caused by the loads and the associated material fatigue. O-rings of small cord diameter have a relatively high compression set therefore efforts should be made to use Orings with the largest possible cord diameter. The groove dimensions for the cord Ø d2 are given, as a function of the type of housing, in the "housing for O-rings" tables. The tables show the recommended cord diameter as a function of the diameters d and D.

O-rings, sealing on the outside, radial pressure (Housing type 1) In this type of housing, it is necessary to ensure that the O-ring rests firmly on the bottom of the groove. Stretching of the O-ring in the installed condition is permissible up to 6%.
O-rings, sealing on the inside, radial pressure (Housing type 2) In this type of housing, the outer periphery of the O-ring rests on the bottom of the groove. Compression of up to 3% is permissible.

O-rings, axially sealing, inward pressure (Housing type 3) In this type of housing, the "inward pressure" direction is the decisive factor in determining the Oring size. In the unpressurised condition, the O-ring must rest on the outer wall of the groove so that the O-ring does not move in the housing when pressure is applied.
O-RING MATERIALS The O-ring materials mainly used in hydraulics and general machinery are NBR of hardnesses 70, 80 and 90 Shore A and FPM of 70 Shore A. The OR O-ring series gives the reference numbers for O-rings in these materials on pages 183 to 210. Enquiries about the reference numbers for other materials should be made to us.
Additional tools O-rings for which no reference number is listed in the OR series and O-rings in other materials, can be produced from tools which are indicated by N, M, H or S in the dimension lists. Depending on the shrinkage behaviour of the individual material and the particular tool design, dimensional differences relative to the nominal dimension quoted in the series can occur. These dimensional differences are given in the tables for each tool design as a percentage relative to the nominal dimension quoted in the series.
Material hardness The hardness of the O-ring material to be selected depends on the system pressure, the tolerances involved in the design and the associated gap widths. It should be remembered that the gap width can be increased by the elastic strain of the metallic materials.

O-RINGS
Tolerances The permissible tolerances for the inner and cord diameters are standardised in DIN 3771, Part 1 and ISO 3601/I. They are designed for O-rings in nitrile-butadine rubber (NBR). See page 148 for tolerance tables. In the case of other materials and hardnesses, there may be differences because of the different shrinkage behaviour of the materials. These have no substantial effect on the sealing function of the O-ring in static applications.
