Welcome
to the 33rd annual Oyster Festival The 33rd annual Oyster Festival is a project of the Rotary Club of Oyster Bay, which is a part of Rotary International, a volunteer organization whose members embrace the motto, “service above.” Volunteers from the Rotary Club of Oyster Bay produce the Oyster Bay Oyster Festival through its charitable arm, the Oyster Bay Charitable Fund, Inc. The concept behind the Oyster Festival in its present form is to leverage the power of Rotary volunteers by raising money directly to support local community organizations and Rotary projects through the Oyster Bay Charitable Fund, and by providing local not-forprofit clubs and organizations a platform to raise their own funds through participation in the Thomas Reardon Memorial Food Court at the Festival. Of course, the Oyster Bay Oyster Festival has the added benefit of showcasing the historic hamlet of Oyster Bay and the beauty of the waterfront to all who attend, as well as being just plain fun. The Rotary Club of Oyster Bay and the dedicated Oyster Festival team welcome you to the 33rd annual Oyster Festival. Please safely enjoy all that the festival has to offer. We hope that you’ll continue to join us at future festivals, as many do, and visit our quant hamlet throughout the year. Walter Imperatore President, Rotary Club of Oyster Bay Jim Fuccio President, Oyster Bay Charitable Fund, Inc.

amusements and thRill Rides Don’t miss out on Newton & Sons sensational midway, a festival staple for years. The attractions are fun and exciting! These attractions have provided safe fun for more than half a century. A wide assortment of rides for children of all ages will be on hand, along with an array of fun sideshow games with great prizes, all sponsored by Wild Bill’s Olde Fashioned Soda. Not many people buy a ferris wheel upon learning a fourth child is on the way. But in 1949, Lewis Newton, already trying to make ends meet by supplying prizes and stuffed animals to church bazaars, took the chance when a Brooklyn priest suggested he “get some rides.” Newton invested his savings of $9,300 and his future was delivered in mounds of steel and moving parts. “I couldn’t tell what I was looking at,” Newton said. “So I drove over to Palisades Amusement Park in New Jersey and asked the guy who ran the wheel

there if he could help me. He saved my life.” That ferris wheel in post-war Flatbush was, according to Newton, the first amusement ride to make the rounds of the Catholic parishes in Queens and Brooklyn. With his initial success, Newton expanded in 1953. He quit his day job installing insulation for Western Electric and devoted his energies to his growing carnival enterprise. Now, with 26 rides in tow, Newton & Sons is the biggest carnival operator in Queens, and Nassau and Suffolk counties, one of an estimated 500 such traveling carnivals in North America, all family owned.

JOHN J.J HARVEY FIREBOAT On this 15th anniversary year of 9/11, we are honored again to welcome the John J. Harvey Fireboat back to Oyster Bay. On Sept. 11, 2001, the boat’s owners asked FDNY officials for permission to assist in evacuations from Ground Zero. Meanwhile, due to many damaged water mains, fire crews were deprived of water. Officials radioed the Harvey to drop off her passengers as soon as possible and return to the disaster site to pump water, reactivating her official designation Marine 2. Alongside FDNY fireboats and Firefighter John D. McKean, she pumped water at the site for 80 hours, until water mains were restored. The John J. Harvey served the FDNY from her launch in 1931 to her retirement in 1994. At 130 feet and 268 net tons, she is among the most powerful fireboats ever in service. She
has five 600 HP diesel engines, enginees and has capacity to pump 18,000 gallons of water a minute. Her pumps are powerful — enough so that when she and the George Washington Bridge were both brand new, she shot water over the bridge’s roadway. Among the marine fires at which she assisted were the Cunard Line pier fire in 1932, the burning of the Normandie in 1942, and the ammunition ship El Estero during World War II. She was named for marine fireman John J. Harvey, killed when the Thomas Willet exploded during a fire. She was retired as Marine 2 by the New York City Fire Department in 1994 and she is now owned by a small group who bought her at auction in 1999. She was placed on The National Register of Historic Places in June 2000. Her owners have been working since 1999 to raise awareness of the importance of historic vessels to the his-

tory of New York City and the United States — and they are succeeding! With their trips up the Hudson, they are promoting interest in the waterfront for towns in New York State. They offer public access to the harbor, training in new skills, and a chance to preserve an important part of history. Cost: Free Location: West End Waterfront Pier
THE CHRISTEEN The festival is pleased to once again showcase The Christeen, a 40-foot gaff rigged sloop. She is the oldest oyster sloop in the U.S. and a National Historic Landmark. She was originally built in 1883 for Captain William Smith in Glenwood Landing, N.Y. for the purpose of harvesting oysters in Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbor. Over her 125 years, The Christeen served not only as an oyster dredge but also as a cargo

carrier and live-aboard between Connecticut, New York and New Jersey. After surviving 16 major hurricanes, numerous nor’easters, two sinkings and severe neglect, the Christeen was returned home to Oyster Bay in 1992. A dedicated group of volunteers worked tirelessly on the restoration of the Christeen — working alongside a full-time shipwright and raising more than $300,000. The Christeen was completely restored and launched in 1999. Come aboard our National Historic Landmark Christeen, the oldest Oyster Sloop in North America, for a sail around beautiful West Harbor and Oyster Bay. View these harbors from a different viewpoint as you cut through the water under sail and look towards the shore. See wildlife, important landmarks, and learn about some of the history of the home of a former President. As an added bonus, the festival includes an added
fun, educational activity for the whole family! With a marine educator, learn more about the marine life that call Oyster Bay home; a unique opportunity offered only through the WaterFront Center’s Christeen. Cost: $25 per person; ages 5 and older Location: The WaterFront Center, Saturday and Sunday.
IDA MAY PROJECT The Christeen Oyster Sloop Preservation Corporation is building a replica of the historically significant Ida May oyster dredge. The original Ida May was built in Bayville by Frank M. Flower in 1925 and was one of the first powered dredges in the oyster industry. Once completed, the replica will be owned and operated by the WaterFront Center where she will take the public out on the water for recreation and marine and maritime education. The mission of the Chris-
teen Oyster Sloop Preservation O S Corp is “to preserve Oyster Bay’s maritime heritage by involving the community in traditional boatbuilding projects.” The process of completing this project is as important as the end result: it requires the work of many volunteers under the guidance of local shipwright Josh Herman. The achievement of a group of people learning new skills and working together to create a significant vessel will enhance the value of the Ida May. Since 2009, Building J, a large shed on the Western Waterfront, has been transformed into a boatbuilding shop. Once completed, the boat will be owned and operated by the WaterFront Center, where she will take the public out on the water for recreation and marine and maritime education. The Christeen Corp is raising capital to complete the project. For more information, visit www.idamayproject.org.

FOUR WAY STREET The dynamic Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young tribute band powerfully recreates CNSY’s beautifully crafted vocal harmonies. Four Way Street’s harmonies are built around three outstanding singers (including two brothers), each bringing unique talent and timbre with meticulous attention to detail that truly make the whole greater than the sum of its parts. This five-piece ensemble captures the full range of the CSNY song catalogue, from the softest ballads to the hardest rockers. The band’s members have performed with some of the top tribute bands on Long Island and the New York tri-state area, including Fast Lane (Eagles); Copperline (James Taylor) and Badlands (Springsteen). They are five seasoned musicians who share a common love for — and dedication — to the songs of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
JEROME BELL This former Top 40 American Idol contestant and Off-Broadway star returns to the Oyster Festival performing a rhythmic mix originals and hit songs, including his newest iTunes charting single “Rainbows (Starting Over).” Bell will be performing with Jenna O’Gara in “The Music of Adele & Sam Smith,” appearing in the Cutting Room in New York City on Nov. 9.
PENNY LANE Go on a Magical Mystery tour with Penny Lane! The band relies on their pure sound and their strong, tight vocal harmonies to recreate the legacy of the Beatles, note-fornote. You can expect to hear a wide selection of Beatles hits from all of their musical phases, an experience that always leaves crowds cheering for more. That’s why Penny Lane can ‘guarantee a splendid time for all.’ Come hear for yourself the music of the Beatles as you remember it.
THE ELECTRIX This group of accomplished musicians brings a a lifetime of diverse musical experiences to every performance. The Electrix have been together since 1995 and are recognized as one of the leading jam bands around, performing classic rock (the Grateful Dead and Allman Brothers), other related genres of music, and original compositions. The band weaves in and out of intense jams with an incredible amount of enthusiasm and feeling, adding their own interpretation and style. They have had the opportunity to share the stage and perform together with such notables as the late drummer Levon Helm (The Band), the late fiddle player Vassar Clements (Old & in the Way), pedal steel guitarist Buddy Cage (The New Riders of The
Purple Sage), and guitarist/vocalist Michael Falzarano (Hot Tuna and New Riders). The band has opened for The New Riders of the Purple Sage, The David Nelson Band, Railroad Earth, The Robbie Krieger Band, and Commander Cody, among others. The Electrix have established themselves with repeat performances in some of the most popular and biggest festivals and play in a wide variety of venues throughout Long Island and New York City.
JOE TAYLOR Soulful, evocative and awe-inspiring are some of the words used by music critics and fans alike to describe Joe Taylor live. His album “Anything’s Possible,” captures the magic and vibrancy of his live performances that combine stellar songwriting, soaring tones and stripped down instrumentation, allowing Taylor's unique artistry to connect with his listeners. Taylor's CD “Anything’s Possible” is a collaboration with Jeff Gross and Grammy®winning engineer Matthew Spindel, and produced the song “The Sweetest Tune,” which charted all the way to No. 1 on Canadian FM radio and was featured on NBC’s daytime drama “Days of Our Lives.” Taylor recently released two songs — “Build This House” and “Don't Change” —

ENDLESS SUMMER Endless Summer is the ultimate Beach Boys tribute band, capturing the essence of the ‘60s California beach scene all year ‘round. Endless Summer is about the vocals, from “Surfer Girl” to “Little Deuce Coupe,” “Good Vibrations,” “Sloop John B,” “Kokomo” to “California Girls.” It's all there — so stop by, join the party and sing along with Endless Summer because it's all about the cars, the surf, the girls and you.
JESSIE CHRIS Eighteen-year-old Jessie Chris is certainly a rising star. The youngest performer at the CMA Festival, she has opened for such top artists as Luke Bryan, Chris Young, John Rich and Billy Ray Cyrus and has performed at The Country Music Hall of Fame. She recorded an acoustic version of 98 Degrees hit song “I Do” with 98 Degrees’ Jeff Timmons and was selected to perform at the William Morris Speakeasy Showcase in Nashville last month. Her first album “Wildfire” was recorded at Nashville’s legendary
Iridesense
Dark Horse Studios. Her new single “In The Meantime” was released on May 31 and is currently being played nationwide on Radio Disney Country, among other stations.
MATT GRABOWSKI After multiple tenures with bands based out of Long Island, Matt Grabowski embarked on a solo career. Performing right out of high school, he has covered the region, from Montauk to Manhattan. With influences ranging from Harry Chapin to Hozier, Grabowski's music contains storytelling lyrics laid on top of music that falls somewhere between Americana and alternative. He was named winner of the Gold Coast Arts Center's Your Big Break, a competition entered by 1,500 contestants in the New York City area, this year. Having already played hundreds of shows, Grabowski continues to perform in the tri-state area multiple times each week. His debut single “Bring The Rains (Down)” is now available on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon Music and digital distributors everywhere.
IRIDESENSE This power pop band — featuring Tara Eberle-Drouin on vocals/bass guitar, Rick Eberle on vocals/rhythm guitar, Rob Viccari on lead guitar, and drummer Rich Drouin —
has been going strong since 1993. Their music can be heard on Nickelodeon’s Zoey 101 (featuring Jaime Lynn Spears) and Drake & Josh. They’ve also been featured on MTV in Pimp My Ride, Room Raiders, NEXT and on an episode of Boiling Points. Their “Secret Constellation” three-song EP, released in mid-March 2013, marks their best effort yet.
TURNPIKE JOE & THE TRAFFIC JAM New York’s premier classic rock/party band, Turnpike Joe & The Traffic Jam has been a major force on the Long Island music scene since 1977. The band has expanded its gig turf to the New York tri-state area and covers such performers as ZZ Top, Buddy Holly, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Chuck Berry, KISS, The Stones, Steve Miller, The Beatles and Tom Petty, as well as originals. Starting in 2005, the band brought its show “Songs You Can Sing To” to the local library circuit. This popular show features soft-rock favorites by such artists as Simon & Garfunkel, John Denver, Buddy Holly, Carl Perkins, James Taylor and The Beatles, among others.

Named in honor of Tom Reardon, one of the beloved founders of the Oyster Festival, the Tom Reardon Memorial Charity Food Court, sponsored by the Roslyn Saviings Bank, is not just the heart of the festival, it is its soul. Food booths are staffed with non-profit employees and volunteers as well as members of the partnering restaurant or catering companies. The profit from each food booth supports that particular charity’s programs. Each booth features signage clearly stating which charity your purchase is supporting. With more than 60+ food choices, even the pickiest eater will find quite a few items to devour! Our main attraction are oysters of course, and we’ll have plenty available raw on the half shell, fried or in stew. Between 40,000-50,000 raw oysters will be consumed throughout the weekend, and all are purchased locally from Frank M. Flower & Sons. Other seafood options include a full lobster dinner, lobster bisque, lobster rolls, mussels, clams (both raw and steamed), clam chowder, shrimp cocktail, grilled shrimp, soft shell crabs, scallops, crab cakes, crab rolls, seafood gumbo, calamari, fish tacos and much more. Meat lovers need not despair as there are many delicious options as well, including bacon on a stick, meatball sliders, pulled pork sandwiches, steak sandwiches, Philadelphia cheese steaks, homemade empanadas, sausage and pepper heroes and, of course, traditional American festival fare. And not to forget the desserts which include homemade apple pie a la mode, Belgian waffles with strawberries and cream, deep fried everything, chocolatedipped everything, frozen hot chocolate, homemade fudge, fruit crepes, and more... Remember our motto: Calories don’t count when they are consumed in support of a great cause!
