Welcome
To all those new to Oxford, welcome. To all those returning, welcome back.
As a debating society, many Presidents of the Oxford Union choose to discuss the promotion of free speech in their welcome. Perhaps the more interesting discussion in the Oxford of today concerns the limits to free speech. Of course, there are such limits. The obvious ones are the limits laid down by the law, which we are clearly obliged to respect – whatever you might think of them. The less regularly discussed limits are those of fair debate. These place a different kind of obligation upon the committee which puts together the term card. It’s an obligation to try to ensure that our events are constructed in a way that is fair to both sides of an argument. It’s not an obligation to avoid discussing certain topics. As such, you might notice that the more controversial events this term take the form of a debate, in an effort to bring the appropriate balance to the discussion. That said, you can never really know what will happen when you put people who fiercely disagree with each other in our debating chamber to argue about a particularly emotive topic. Regardless of what happens, one of the key things the Oxford Union
teaches – now and throughout its history – is that you should never be afraid of ideas. I’ve heard points raised here that range from illuminating, to fatuous, to downright offensive. It has been my exposure to this range, however, which has helped me realise what I think to be true and what I think to be good. In my opinion, a central purpose of the Oxford Union is breaking down the barriers between students and the people who shape our world, from whichever field they come. Nowhere else does a student have the opportunity to challenge world leaders, quiz cultural icons, and engage with sports stars – all within eight weeks. It’s this vibrancy of debate and increasing diversity of speakers which captivated me so early on during my time at Oxford. Come along to our first debate, the No Confidence debate, which has been held at the Oxford Union at the start of each year as far back as anyone remembers. You might get hooked. I know I was.

Despite my archaic job title, I love the Union because it allows me to get away from my PPE books. We are world-renowned for our guest speakers and, as your Librarian, it has been my privilege to work on our Michaelmas line-up; I sincerely hope it lives up to expectations. Implementing a more efficient invitation system this term, we have toiled hard in the Librarian’s Office to produce a diverse series of fascinating speakers. From Sir Elton John to Eva Longoria, Laura Bates to Rio Ferdinand, it has been our aim to ensure that everyone manages to find some excuse to escape from the essay crises.

While the committee has been working tirelessly throughout the summer to bring you brilliant events, in the Treasurer’s Office we have been very busy, bustling away raising funds. We have been working with a number of businesses to secure sponsorship, so that we can bring the biggest and best speakers to the Union, and make sure you get the most for your membership. This term in particular, we have worked with a range of local businesses to put together this year's Freshers' Fair. The more exciting part of my role is obtaining ‘Treasurer’s Treats’. These are discounts all across the city from cafés, restaurants, bars, and even nightclubs, so make sure you check them out and take advantage of the great deals on offer. SECRETARY’S WELCOME I hope that you all had great summers and are looking forward to the start of term. As the Secretary, it is my job to minute meetings of the Standing Committee and (more importantly) oversee all of the social aspects to the Union. My team and I have worked tirelessly over the vac to make sure that, this term, the Union can put on a wide range of activities for all of its members to enjoy. As a result, there’s a whole host of fun lined up for you all: from our pub quizzes and drinks events to our ‘Sparkling Night of Jazz and Chocolate’ Social and the Venetian Masquerade Ball, there is so much to do. Keep your eyes peeled for updates on our social media platforms for upcoming events (see p. 76). The Union always has been and always will be for the members, so anyone looking to get involved is encourage to do so! LORD ALAN SUGAR Having left school aged 16, Lord Alan Sugar started selling electric goods out of a van he bought for ÂŁ50. In 1968, he founded Amstrad and now has an estimated worth of over ÂŁ1 billion, being ranked 101st in the 2015 Sunday Times Rich List. A former Chairman of Tottenham Hotspur FC, Sugar has also starred in all ten series of The Apprentice, with the eleventh series airing this autumn.

Art and Disability: How I Liberated Myself through my own Post-Colonial Aesthetic Yinka Shonibare MBE is a British-Nigerian artist. He has become well known for his exploration of colonialism and post-colonialism within the contemporary context of globalisation. Working in painting, sculpture, photography, film, and installation, Shonibare’s work examines race, class, and the construction of cultural and national identities. He has been nominated for the Turner Prize and, in 2010, his first public art commission, Nelson's Ship in a Bottle, opened on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square. 28

THE HUNTING GROUND with producer

The Hunting Ground is a documentary film which explores the prevalence of sexual assault on US college campuses. In raw and emotional interviews, survivors and their families share real-life horror stories that have become all too common. The film was produced by Amy Ziering, who is a multiple award-winning American film producer and director. She counts a Sundance Film Festival Award and two Emmy Awards among her many accolades, as well as an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature. YANIS VAROUFAKIS Yanis Varoufakis is a Greek-Australian economist who served as Minister of Finance of Greece in 2015. In the January 2015 General Election, he was elected to the Greek Parliament, representing Syriza, and took office in the new government of Alexis Tsipras two days later. He resigned from the Ministry of Finance on 6 July 2015, the day after a no-vote on the referendum on austerity.

NOAM CHOMSKY Voted the ‘world’s top public intellectual’ in a 2005 poll, Noam Chomsky is an American linguist, philosopher, and social justice activist. Often described as the ‘father of modern linguistics’, he is also an internationally respected critic of US foreign policy. He is staunchly opposed to austerity programmes, and considers those currently in force in the EU to be an attack upon democracy.

MICHEL ROUX JR Michel Roux Jr is a French-English two-star Michelin chef. The author of five cookbooks, he took over running Le Gavroche in 1991, gradually changing the style of cooking to his own – classic French with a lighter, modern twist. Roux was a judge and presenter on the BBC's MasterChef: The Professionals, and presented all series of Great British Food Revival. He is also a keen sportsman, running his nineteenth marathon in 2014 to raise funds for the charity VICTA.

JULIUS MALEMA Julius Malema is the founder and leader of South African political party the Economic Freedom Fighters, having been expelled from the African National Congress in 2012. A former President of the ANC Youth League, he was named by Forbes in 2011 as one of the '10 Youngest Power Men in Africa', and has been described by the current President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, as the "future leader" of South Africa.

The 270th and current Archbishop of Constantinople since 1991, Patriarch Bartholomew I is the spiritual leader of the 300 million Orthodox Christians around the world. He is recognised for his desire to work with other faiths, most notably in his attempts to rebuild Orthodox-Catholic relations. He speaks Greek, Turkish, Italian, German, French, English, Classical Greek, and Latin.

The Business of Sport and how it Develops People Having retired as an Olympic-class shot, Sir Jackie Stewart OBE became an F1 driver. He competed between 1965 and 1973, and won three World Drivers' Championships, earning him the nickname 'The Flying Scot'. In 2009, he was ranked the fifth greatest Formula One driver of all time by journalist Kevin Eason. Sir Jackie is now President of Dyslexia Scotland, and the Founder and Chairman of the Grand Prix Trust.

LANCE ARMSTRONG Lance Armstrong is an American former professional road racing cyclist. Overcoming potentially fatal metastatic testicular cancer, he won the Tour de France seven consecutive times from 1999 to 2005, but was stripped of those victories in 2012 after a protracted doping scandal. In a 2013 interview, Armstrong confessed that some of the allegations were true, though he has declined to testify about the full extent of his drug use.

Competitive Debating While the Oxford Union is famous for its speaker meetings and Thursday evening debates, it still stays true to its roots, maintaining a strong competitive debating tradition. We pride ourselves on training anyone who is interested in the art of debating – regardless of whether you want to debate competitively, or just improve your public speaking skills. When it comes to competitive debating, we are among the best in the world. This year, Oxford reached the finals of the World Universities Debating Championships (WUDC) and the SemiFinals of the European Universities Debating Championships, as well as winning several UK inter-varsity (IV) competitions, including the second largest in the UK, the Cambridge IV. The largest British competition is, of course, our own Oxford IV. Competitive debating at Oxford also has an incredibly fun and inclusive atmosphere. For many people it has been the place where they’ve made their longest-lasting friends during their time at Oxford. In order to ensure everyone gets a chance, we have a specific quota for almost every competition to which

we send teams, ensuring that novice speakers make up roughly one third of the delegation. This year, we sent teams to Malaysia, Vienna, Glasgow, Dublin, and many British cities and universities. As travel and registration fees are fully refunded, we are proud that these opportunities are open to all Union members, regardless of their financial situation. During Michaelmas alone we will be sending teams to a dozen competitions. Competitive debating goes beyond just sending Union teams to competitions; it also encompasses a vast amount of training, access work for schools that might benefit from the skills involved in debating, and hosting our own debating competitions from around the world. This term, we have reworked the training programme, so that the entire competitive debating community will train at 7.30pm on Sundays. After a short talk, there will be a round of practice debates, before heading to the pub at 9.30pm. At the beginning of Michaelmas, there will be dedicated talks on the basics of competitive debating. However, we have designed

our training programme so people can start learning to debate at any point throughout the year. Near the end of the term, we will hold a freshers' competition so that you can put these skills to use in a slightly more competitive environment. For those of you keen to train to the highest level, we will be holding trials for our squad for the World Universities Debating Championships 2016 on Sunday 18 October. We will be selecting three teams and two judges to represent Oxford in Thessaloniki in Greece between 27 December 2015 and 4 January 2016. While competition is tough, a number of freshers have made the squad in past years. You can sign up to trial via the Debate Announcement email (see below). As mentioned earlier, on 13-14 November, we will be hosting the largest IV in the UK, the Oxford IV. 400 competitors and adjudicators from across the globe will be competing. Everyone within the debating community is required to help out, whether by allowing a few people to ‘crash’ (sleep) on your floor, judge a few rounds, or help guide people to their
rooms. It is a great way to get to know others within the Union and around the world. Regardless of your debating experience, if you put lots into the Union you are guaranteed to get lots out! How to Get Involved If you are interested in getting involved with the Oxford Union, there are a number of ways to do so. Participate in Debates Debates usually take place on Thursday evenings, and are held in the Chamber (doors open at 7.30pm). They cover a range of subjects and are a great opportunity to challenge speakers, as well as voice your opinions on topical issues. You can participate by giving a floor speech in the main debate before the final speakers, or in the Emergency Debate (starting at 7.45pm) preceding the main debate. For those interested in honing their debating skills, debating workshops are held in the Union every Sunday at 7.30pm. Run for Election All Officers and committee members are elected by you – the members

– on Friday of 7th Week. Aspiring committee members are required to make a number of speeches, depending on the position for which they are running. The Library The Oxford Union has one of the largest lending libraries in the University and, unlike college libraries, boasts an extensive collection of fiction and travel books. Most of our collection is catalogued on SOLO. The Library also has most of your daily newspapers, subscribes to a number of magazines, and has an impressive collection of DVDs. The Old Library is adorned with some of the world’s most famous PreRaphaelite murals, painted by artists including William Morris and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. The adjoining Poetry Room is a true hidden gem, while the beautiful Goodman Library is open

Ballots for Oversubscribed Events: • Whenever we think an event will be oversubsribed, a proportion of the seats will be allocated by random ballot, a link to which will be advertised by email and on Facebook. • Any member successful in the ballot must take their seat no less than 45 minutes before the event is due to begin, or their seat will be given to someone in the queue. • The majority of seats will always be available for those who queue. 78
Meeting Speakers: • At every debate, there will be 5 spaces reserved for dinner before and drinks afterwards. • At all speaker events for which the speaker has requested a drinks reception, spaces will be reserved for members. • These spaces will be allocated by random ballot, a link to which will be advertised by email and on Facebook.
