Happy New Year to you all.

Emily Chapman

We hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas with plenty of time with loved ones. Oxford was abuzz over the festive season with the Oxford & Districts Lions Christmas Parade, the Oxford Community Trust Christmas Wonderland and all of the other events around town. It was great to see so many people enjoying the events and getting involved. We have some photos from the Parade, Wonderland and the Oxford Farmer's Market Children's Market on the cover and on pages 14 and 15. We are looking forward to the coming year and bringing feature local people, groups and events. We’d love you to get in touch if you have a story you would like us to consider, we don’t always know everything that is going on around the District so it is really helpful to us. South Eyre Sunflowers is opening up again later in the month, check out Amy’s story on page 6. All funds raised go to charities in Oxford and nationally.

Oxford Health Charity Limited Voluntary Board Directors (up to 3 Positions)

Oxford Health Charity Limited is a charitable organisation that operates the Oxford Community Health Centre (OCHC), which provides primary health services to the Oxford and surrounding Waimakariri community in North Canterbury. OCHC is a community-based practice with a strong patient-centric focus - made up of a team of dedicated medical, nursing, operational management and administrative professionals - who take pride in their patients’ care and wellbeing. The Board has strong financial controls and effective policy development and is supported by a Board Secretary. It recognises and values the need to provide targeted medical services to the local community and provides governance on ongoing community health and wellbeing services and facilities. Day-to-day operational management of OCHC is delegated to the practice’s General Manager and clinical management is delegated to the Clinical Director. OCHC is currently undergoing a period of growth and is planning to undertake a significant Health Centre redevelopment project over the next two years, to better meet the community’s future primary care needs. Owing to this, it is now time for the Board to strengthen its membership by appointing up to three new directors to assist in these voluntary, unpaid roles. These roles may suit someone with prior governance experience, or someone looking for an entry-level governance role. You must:

when out in the sun this summer Living in New Zealand we are often bombarded with messages about the dangers of sun exposure. And rightly so, according to Sunsmart, over 300 New Zealanders die of skin cancer every year, and it is by far the most common form of cancer in this country. All types of sunburn, whether serious or mild, can cause permanent and irreversible skin damage and can lay the groundwork for skin cancer in later life. Sunburn occurs when living tissue, like your skin, is overexposed to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) causing it to change in colour from slightly pink to severely red or purple. Sunburn can appear from one to six hours after exposure and the skin feels hot to the touch. Severe sunburn may cause blistered skin and even a fever, nausea and dehydration. Your eyes may also be painful or irritated due to overexposure to UVR. The best way to prevent sunburn is to use sun protection. Sunscreen is one type of sun protection, you should also always wear protective clothing, as well as a hat and sunglasses. In addition, try to keep in the shade whenever possible. However, if you have the misfortune of getting sunburnt there are a number of ways you can help treat the condition: • Use cold compresses on the burnt areas, for example a wet, cold towel. • Ask your community pharmacist for topical treatments to manage the pain and heat, or a moisturising cream for dry skin. • If blistering occurs, do not burst them as you may get an infection. Instead cover with a gauze or a bandage. If your blisters do burst, see your community pharmacist for treatment options such as antiseptic ointment or hydrocortisone cream. • If you are in pain you can take aspirin (not recommended for children), paracetamol or ibuprofen. • Avoid alcohol and drink plenty of water to help rehydrate your body. If the sunburn is severe, your eyes are extremely painful, or you have blisters accompanied by a fever or nausea, see your community pharmacist or doctor immediately. And remember that there is no such thing as a “safe” tan – any change in the colour of the skin is a sign that damage has taken place.

• Have the ability to think strategically and be commercially astute. • Be able to commit the necessary time (monthly commitment), and willing to offer your skills and experience to support the talented team at OCHC and the wellbeing of the local community that it supports. This is a pivotal time to join the Board and we would particularly welcome applicants who: • Live in Oxford, or within the surrounding Waimakariri community in North Canterbury and/or those who have an affinity with the Oxford community. • Have Health / Public Health / Mental Health Sector experience. • Can add to our Board’s skillset in any of these areas: Community Engagement, Fundraising, Community Grant Applications, Facilities Development or Construction. New premises and team member for Mike Pero in Oxford by Emily Chapman

The main street of Oxford has a new addition with Mike Pero Real Estate Rangiora opening up a satellite Oxford office. Di Moreira is well known in the community, working locally since 2015, and has been with Mike Pero for just over a year. Not only is there a new office, but Di’s daughter, Julia Moreira Borges has joined the team and will be based at the Oxford office with Di. Julia has been living in Brazil for the last 5 years teaching ESOL. She started off working in a school, but ended up teaching online, offering lessons to people from over 50 different countries. Julia, with her husband, was wanting to move back to New Zealand, and whilst they were in the midst of a strenuous visa process, Julia started to think about a change in career. She says “As I saw mum excel in her career, it was something that was in the back of my mind”. Julia goes on to say “There are a lot of reasons that this is a good career choice for me. I like that I can grow in this industry and be constantly upskilling and learning new things.” When asked how she feels about working with Julia, Di says “It is absolutely amazing. Julia is so easy going, great communication skills, very determined, has a fabulous personality and such a strong work ethic.

It is a privilege to work together as family and very special for us”. Julia and Di are both excited to have a designated office, just beside the Oxford Butchery. Di says “It is perfect timing with Julia coming on board, the perfect location right on Main Street, with lots of parking nearby.” Oxford is such a great town, with a unique vibe and we are really looking forward to becoming a bigger part of the community.

Mike Pero Real Estate Rangiora co-owner Amber Louttit says “With both Di and Julia living in the area and being involved in the community already, opening an office in Oxford was an easy decision for us. It represents our commitment to building closer connections to the Oxford community, and to contribute to the town's growth.

Di and Julia would love to see you, so pop on down to the new office and say hi."

South Eyre Sunflowers is back in 2024 Meet the Oxford Locals Who Turned Horticulturalists for a Worthy Cause by Amy Riach

In a corner paddock on South Eyre Road, tucked under a view of the mountains, locals may find the inspiration behind Van Gough’s Sunflowers. Kerry McCorry and her partner Scott are dairy farmers down South Eyre, most of the time. But they’re also raising a crop of sunflowers, as a way to support I Am Hope, and give back to the Oxford community. Right now, the sunflowers are barely knee height and green as anything, Kerry telling me that “they’re still only babies!”. But come the New Year, when the flowers shoot up and bloom to face the sun, the field will be opened to the public, and the money raised will be split in two, half to be donated to I Am Hope, and half to be poured back into the local Oxford community. Kerry’s wild plan to give back was hatched last year for the first time, inspired by a moving interview given by Mike King on The Rock, and her initiative was an incredible success. Visitors were charged $3 for entry to the field, and people flocked to walk through the expanse of sunflowers and take hundreds of photos. For everyone who wanted to take a little bit of Van Gough’s magic home, sunflowers could be picked for $5 per stem. And with a goal to raise $800, Kerry and the team at South Eyre instead raised $15,661.50, all of it donated and dedicated to doing good. Those prices will be staying just the same this year, but this time, South Eyre Sunflowers is hoping to raise $20,000 “to beat what we made last year!”. In fact, Scott may be recruited to the fundraising cause once again, to weld the 2024 honesty box. Kerry and the South Eyre team also set up a sunflower bank account, so that people could pay online from home, and Kerry was absolutely blown away by all the support. Kerry says that this sunflower plot is all about “everybody chipping in”, and she is hoping that Cantabrians will come together in support again this year. The field is set to be open on the 26th of January, weather permitting! On Waitangi weekend, “it’s something to do with the kids, something to get everyone out of the house!”, and entry for children under 12 is free. But ultimately it’s Mother Nature who’s ruling the roost, so if she decides that the flowers have to wait, then we will all wait with them, and Kerry says “that’s just life, that’s just Mother Nature”. The sunflowers are on dry land farming, which means they rely on the rain, “and we rely on the weather to do its job and grow this crop”. Kerry, her family, and her passionate team are dedicated to agriculture - to the dairy farm and to horticulture alike, and part of the fundraising effort is always dedicated to young students of Agriculture. Last year, the community funds were divided between the Oxford Community Trust, Oxford Volunteer Fire Brigade, St John, and the growing Oxford Ag club. With that donation, in 2023 Oxford Ag created the South Eyre Sunflower cup, to be awarded to deserving young students of agriculture at the Oxford Area School Prizegiving, and that trophy will be “around for years to come, hopefully!” Expecting just a few locals to make a trip down to the field of flowers, last year Kerry was stunned when she was instead greeted by lines and lines of cars parked on the verge, some having traveled from Christchurch to show their support and enjoy the beauty. “I would tear up!” says Kerry, who loves her sunflowers; one of her “crazy, wild ideas”, that turned out just right. “It’s so nice to be able to watch them really do something”, she says, “I can’t put it into words!” six

A paddock of flowers can bring so much happiness, and one corner of a dairy farm, armed by one crazy idea and a team of community minded locals, can make all the difference. “As long as we’re here, we’ll keep doing this”, says Kerry. She adds that she and Scott “are still learning about these plants, and there is so much to learn”. In fact, last year was the first ever sunflower crop on South Eyre, not that you’d know it. But it takes a village to raise a sunflower, and Kerry extends her heartfelt thanks to everyone who made South Eyre Sunflowers possible, most importantly to The Good Oil, Chapman Agriculture, Alan Fraser Grain and Seed, Stubbs Groundspreading, and Oxford Agricultural Spraying Ltd. From the team who donated the seed, to the team who helped sow it, to her friend Kelly who took over the admin, and to everyone in between, this just wouldn't be possible without the support of a community. As the weather warms, and the flowers bloom, head down to the corner field on the South Eyre road, tucked away under the mountain, and for just a few weeks every year, looking like a painting.

Fun for the whole family at Wheels with Wings The Oxford & Districts Lions and the Oxford Community Trust are gearing up for their 3rd Wings with Wheels classic and vintage car and motorbike rally, which will be held on Sunday 21st January. The event has proved extremely popular in previous years with car and aircraft enthusiasts, and this year is set to impress again. The Scooter Charity Challenge scooters are planning to attend the event again, completing a ride from Rangiora to Oxford via Loburn and Ashley Gorge. Aircraft will be flying in, but this is weather dependent. Along with the cars and aircraft, organisers are also keen to see more motorcycles at the event this year. Wings with Wheels is a great day out for the whole family, with stalls and plenty of food options, including the Lion’s Food

Caravan, and coffee, and the venue has a large shady area perfect for relaxing over a bite to eat. The event is a fundraiser for the two organisers, Oxford & Districts Lions and Oxford Community Trust, to continue the work they both do in the community. Entry is $10.00 per person, or for 3 or more in a car $25.00. There will be eftpos at the gate, and at the Lion’s Caravan. For planes, cars and people’s safety organisers would prefer people to leave their dogs at home. If people do bring dogs, they must be on a leash. The event is on Browns Road (off Woodside Road) and will be well signposted. If you would like more information, you can get in touch with Dave McPherson 027 223 1870.

Recipe of the month

with Louize Juniper

“PAELLA” – SPANISH STYLE A delicious dish to serve whist on holiday, especially camping

IF YOU DON’T HAVE A “PAELLA’ DON’T PANIC A large (14 inch or more) frying pan with a good flat base will do along with a any kind of skillet.

Paella cooks best on gas so you can achieve the crispy rice base. I use a gas free standing camping cooker, which uses aerosol style gas canisters. This is a very useful piece of kit for any kitchen that doesn’t have gas. I always use mine when wok cooking.

INGREDIENTS

Lots of extra virgin olive 4-6 boneless chicken thighs 4 cloves garlic smoked paprika Pinch saffron threads 1 pepper your choice of colour 1.5 cups Paella rice (Caspari and Bomba are best, but Aborio will do) 2.5 cups of good chicken stock 1 cup chopped tomatoes fresh or tinned. Bay leaf 2 Chorizo (raw is best but this is optional) 1 cup frozen peas or beans Half cup chopped Parsley Half cup chopped Coriander 10 mussels (Smoked, cooked shellless is best) 8 raw whole King Prawns or cup of small prawns Lemon wedges for garnish

METHOD

• Cut chicken thighs into chunks, put into a bowl with 1 tablespoon of smoked paprika, chopped garlic, salt and pepper and a good glug of extra virgin olive oil, mix well and leave to marinate whilst you prepare rest of ingredients • Deseed and chop pepper into chunks, put into a separate bowl. • Heat 2 tbsp of olive oil in the Paella pan, once hot add the chicken and fry just to sear the outside. Remove from pan and put to one side. • Add rice to hot pan and the saffron, bay leaf and 1 tbsp of smoked paprika, stir to coat rice in all the oil and spices, stir in chopped tomatoes. • Add half the stock, reduce heat to a gentle simmer. Cook for about 5 mins DO NOT STIR FROM NOW ON! This is to help the Paella get that fabulous crispy bottom! • Add the chicken, sliced Chorizo and remainder of stock. • Cook for a further 5 mins then add the peas/beans, Prawn and mussels, chopped coriander • Cover with tin foil, once the stock is bubbling cook for 5 mins then lift a side of the foil and test the rice. It should be soft to eat, and the prawns pink. • At this stage, take a spoon and see if the rice has stuck to the pan, if so this is perfect. If not turn up the gas and let it cook out some more. All the stock should be absorbed by the rice. • Before serving , drizzle with extra virgin olive oil and chopped parsley, place lemon wedges on top for garnish.

Update from the Oxford Community Trust by Emily Chapman

2023 was a busy year as always for the Oxford Community Trust. Christmas brought some fantastic highlights for the year. The Trust were able to work with in with the Oxford & Districts Lions Christmas Parade and bring some awesome floats and costumes out for the event. This was done with the help of the Christchurch Parade Trust, and Oxford Promotions. The Christmas Wonderland, was a wonderful event again for the community seeing huge numbers of people coming through to be wowed by the beautiful displays. This event could not happen without the large volume of volunteers to make it work, with a big set up and pack down. Trust manager Jo Ealam says “It was great to see so many people from Oxford and further afield come and enjoy the Christmas Wonderland, we are so grateful to all of the groups and businesses who took the time to do a display for the event”. The Trust is reliant on funding to operate, and have four main funders, Rata Foundation, COGS, Lotteries and Waimakariri District Council. They have also been the recipients recently of some extra funding that will enhance their ability to help people in the community. They received a donation of Pak ’n Save Vouchers from the Foodstuffs South Island Community Trust. Pictured are James and Catherine Flanagan from Rangiora Pak n Save with Jo Ealam. This donation comes at a time where the cost of living is high, and people are struggling with their day to day costs. Jo Ealam says “We want to say a big thank you to the Foodstuffs South Island Community Trust, along with James and Catherine from Pak n Save for their support, this will make a huge difference to our Food Bank operations”. Along with donations like this, the Trust has partnered with Satisfy Food Rescue who work with food banks in North Canterbury, which supplements the food available for the community. Jo also says it has been heartening to have members of the community come on board to run fundraisers. Linda McCarthy from PGG Wrightson Real Estate has been running meat raffles for over a year at the West Hotel, and has raised a significant amount of money over this time to support the work of the Trust. Michelle Anderton at Re-Clotheme also ran a promotion to raise funds for the Trust. Along with the financial assistance, Jo says it is the partnering together of different groups and businesses that is so encouraging for the team at the Trust. The Oxford Community Trust reopens on the 15th of January. You can contact them on 03 312 3006.

Pest Free Waimakariri holding photo competition this summer Photo by Steve Attwood, Auldwood Birds.

A world famous photo of the newly crowned Bird of the Century, is being used to promote the inaugural Waimakariri Nature Photo Competition. The photo, of a Pūtekeke/Australasian crested grebe carrying a chick on its back, was chosen to promote the competition because the bird is found in Waimakariri and the photo was taken in the wetland lake at Waikuku Beach. The image was taken by Little River bird photographer Steve Attwood, of Auldwood Birds, and became famous when it was used by British/American comedian John Oliver to promote his successful Bird of the Century campaign for the Pūtekeke. Steve said the Pūteketeke can be found in small numbers on many of the coastal wetland lakes, including at Waikuku Beach, Kaiapoi Lakes, and Pegasus lakes/ wetland.

His photo has been used in the poster created by Kate O'Brien, of Lyttelton, to promote the Waimakariri Nature Photo Competition, which is being run by Pest Free Waimakariri and is open to everyone of all ages.

``We are hoping the competition will encourage people to explore Waimakariri’s beautiful parks and reserves, or their own backyards, this summer and submit their best photograph, or photographs, of native birds, lizards, fish or insects from anywhere within Waimakariri District,'' said Pest Free Waimakariri’s conservation ranger, Richard Chambers.

Photographs must be taken in the Waimakariri District. There are two categories: Under 15 years of age, and Open. Participants may submit up to three photos.

The winner of each category will receive a family pass to Willowbank Wildlife Reserve in Christchurch, framing of their A3-sized image from Cameo Fine Arts in Rangiora and a copy of the book Zealandia: The Valley that Changed a Nation, by James Lynch. There will also be prizes from Cameo Fine Arts for second and third place getters as well as three family passes for standouts in the Under 15 category to any Waimakariri District Council swimming pool. The competition opened on December 9 and closes on January 28. To find out more about the competition and how to enter go to www.pestfreewaimakariri.org/photo-comp

Happy New Year to all. I wonder how many of you made a new year resolution and, if so, did you pledge to get out there and do something a bit different this year? Have you thought about joining one of the many sections at the Oxford Club? This is a wonderful way to meet people in the community particularly if you are new to the town. Most sections are in recess until the beginning of February, but a great way to start the year is with Crackerjack Bowls. Starting on the January 22nd at 6pm teams of three play over six weeks on a Monday night. A BBQ is held at the end of play each week and there are nightly prizes. This is excellent for those who have not played before, as fun is the object here, and bowls and some gentle coaching are available. The cost per team of three is $120.00 (good value) and non club members can be signed in by members. The pool tables and dart boards are available at all times, so bring visitors and friends along for some friendly competition. We would love to see you all there enjoying and making the most of this wonderful community asset. Wishing you all a wonderful 2024.

Year 10 ROAR Quail Island Camp

As part of the Year 10 ROAR programme (which stands for Resilience, Opportunities, Adventures and Reflective) we set off for our camp on Quail Island last term. To make the journey as important as the destination, we had the bus from school drop us off at the base of the Bridle Path and walked over to the ferry, which provided amazing views and a great first adventure! After a quick ferry ride over to the Island (and after moving the gear) we were ready to get into camp living, where students prepared all their own tents, cooking groups and food rationing for the 3 days. The camp saw a mix of team-building activities, circle time chats, solo reflections as well as plenty of swimming, raft building and just taking time to enjoy this beautiful slice of Aotearoa. A highlight for all of us was the incredible scavenger hunt/ orienteering course that Mr Burston set up on the island during Day 2, we all got to see the student's competitive side! ROAR is all about fostering values that the students themselves think they need to be successful in life. Seeing students engaging in camp this year, shows us the incredible young people that they are and gives us insight into their resilient futures. Tino pai to mahi!

Mike Hart : Tumuaki|Principal What a fantastic year 2023 was. It was jam-packed with experiences and opportunities that have created lasting memories along the way. Walking through the school in the last weeks of term, I saw many young people who were excited yet tired, spending time with their new classes and teachers for the year 2024. Wishing you all a fantastic and rejuvenating break! As we bid farewell to 2023, let's embrace the exciting prospects that await us in 2024. Get ready for a year filled with endless possibilities and incredible learning experiences.

Activity Days were a great success!

Velocity Carts, Gymnastics, Adrenalin Forest, Gaming, Climb Mt Oxford, Mega Air, Stencil Art, Willowbank, Ice Skating.... the list goes on! With twenty-four activities held at school, in the local area and in Christchurch our Year 1-10 tamariki and rangatahi had a great time last term participating in our annual Activity Days. The variety on offer was wide and varied as always with something for everyone. Organisation starts weeks ahead with many bookings to be made and transport to be arranged, health & consents to be collected and safety plans put in place. All our staff are involved in some way which is a great way for us to continue to grow together - thank you for all your efforts to make these days such a success for our young people. Also, a big thank you to parents and caregivers who accompanied some of the trips alongside our staff.

Year 9 - Service Day

As part of their programme, our Year 9 students gave service to the school and wider community last term. Students came up with ideas of who and how they could assist others in our community as part of their service programme in Term 4. All Year 9 students were involved either at school or out in the wider community. Service included Producing baking and gift bags to support the Oxford Community Trust Helping teachers in the Discovery, Year 1-3 section of school. Making decorations to be displayed on Christmas trees. Building new vegetable beds for Horticulture. Clearing windfall at a local farm. Cleaning gravestones at the local cemetery

This was a great opportunity for our rangatahi to display the school values and support others as a way of being positive role models in our community.

Oxford - Ohoka Community Board update with

Thomas Robson

Hi Folks I hope everyone had a great Christmas, and have made the most of the warm weather. Christmas in Oxford was very festive this year, with a hugely successful Christmas Wonderland, run by the Oxford Community Trust, and a very impressive Santa Parade that we were lucky enough to be involved with, so I would like to thank the Community Trust and the Lions for these great events. We are lucky to have so many volunteers working on our behalf to make our community successful. I would also like to thank everyone who came along to the Community Board meetings in 2023 and who also engaged with us throughout the year. Having such good feedback has made it easier to represent the Community’s interests. It has been a very busy year with two major issues to deal with, ie the proposed plan change, and the proposed land fill. We seemed to have had a win with the proposed land change being declined by the independent commissioners, only to then find out that the decision has been appealed to the Environment Court by Rolleston Industrial Developments Limited. Also the Landfill issue remains with the applicant making yet more changes and requesting time extensions for more witness caucusing. The Board is formally opposing any more time extensions due to the already drawn out process and impacts on the Community. The Community Board will continue to work on opposing these two developments. As we head into the New Year there will be a number of road works happening in the area while the weather is conducive. We will try to keep you updated about any disruptions and detours on our Facebook page. Looking forward to 2024, the Community Board will continue its work advocating for the Community, and as part of this work we will be available at Community Events such as the A & P Show and the Swannanoa Country Fair. So if you have any issues come talk to us. Happy New Year from your Community Board. Regards

Thomas Robson Chair Oxford Ohoka Community Board

from the Presidents Desk

with Oxford Club President Kyle Scott Hello There, As you read this we will have enjoyed Christmas and the festivities with our family and friends and will be in a New Year, 2024. The year of 2023 was a challenging year for all in our community, The Oxford Club included. Looking on the bright side 2023 is also a testament to the resilience, camaraderie, and strength that defines our local community. At The Oxford Club we have weathered challenges and even celebrated a few triumphs and appreciated the support you give our club on a regular basis. Here’s to 2024 at The Oxford Club, and the opportunity for further growth, hosting of exciting events, new friendships and preserving the future and financial viability of the Oxford Club for another 136 years. Our club membership drive continues into January so if you or existing members introduce a new member to the club we reward you with 1,000 Bonus Points.

a

The start of December saw the Commission Opening and State Opening of New Zealand’s 54th Parliament following the formation of the coalition Government. The ceremonies, which take place over two consecutive days, are an important procedure to formally start the new parliamentary term, and it was a huge honour to be sworn in alongside my colleagues in the house. The lead-up to the Christmas break has been pretty busy, as I’ve enjoyed various visits around the country in my new role of Minister for Tourism and Hospitality. I spent the day in Queenstown with Southland MP Joseph Mooney at the start of December, where I met with a number of tourism operators and stakeholders to discuss the importance of creating top visitor experiences. The following week I met with United Airlines vice president Patrick Quayle at Christchurch Airport to celebrate the new direct flight service between San Francisco and Christchurch.

For those of you who are not members the Club is a great place to unwind, connect and enjoy with many benefits, we hope to see you at our club very soon.

The new service marks the first time the South Island has had a direct flight to San Francisco, as well as the first time an American Airline has had a direct flight service between the US and the South Island, so it’s an exciting milestone for Christchurch as well as the wider tourism sector around the mainland.

Thank you for being an integral part of our Oxford Club family, Cheers to a fantastic year ahead.

Finally, I had fun taking part in the local Santa parades in Kaiapoi, Rangiora and last, but certainly not least, Oxford.

Warmest regards,

There was an impressive turnout of participants and onlookers, and the local parades are a good way to get into the festive spirit.

Kyle Scott,

Well done to the Oxford Lions Club for another well-organised event.

Oxford Club President.

Happy New Year to you all.

I hope everyone has had a safe and happy Christmas with family and friends. This morning I was down helping to pack away the Christmas Grotto and it made me think about how lucky we are in Oxford with so many hard working volunteers willing to give up their time and their time with their families to make Oxford a better place to live. Thank you to all the hard working people out there for your time. Cust/Oxford St John is made up of around 15 people that are willing to be there when needed, all doing their bit in different ways to make the station work as it does, thank you to you and your families for all you do. We have been back on jobs this year a little compared to last year, but this is mainly due to not having enough personnel to turn the ambulance out to every job in Oxford. There have been nights when we just haven’t been able to put the ambulance on the road. This is a first for Oxford since we started first responding back in the early nineties. Summer is a time to be aware of anaphylaxis [allergic reaction / severe swelling] after a bite or sting from an insect. If you have an epipen, please carry it with you when out bush walking etc, and have a low tolerance to call for help. We are still interested in new volunteers so if you think it is something you would like to look into give us a call. Please call the station on 03 312 3516 , leave your name and number and our recruiting officer will be in touch.

In November the Brigade had ten calls. Six calls were to assist St John, two of these calls were to set up a landing zone for Westpac helicopters.

I hope you have all had a great Christmas and are enjoying the summer weather that is finally here. If you are heading away on holiday, make sure you let your neighbours know so they can keep an eye on your property. There has been an increase in burglaries and parcel thefts, keep an eye out, be vigilant and report any suspicious cars in the the area. If you are heading away these holidays make sure to take regular breaks, and watch your speed. It’s great to have time over the break to have barbecues and catch up with friends, just make sure to always have a sober driver. The holiday season always sees an increase in foot traffic on the streets keep an eye on those pedestrian crossings as you head through town. Thanks for reading. Be safe. Feel Safe.

The other calls were to a motor vehicle crash with no injuries to the occupant, one car fire, the car was destroyed and the suspected cause was a birds nest in the engine area, one private alarm activation caused by faulty equipment and one to a vegetation fire with the owner in attendance, and no action was required by the Brigade. This brings our total calls for the year to sixty seven. This months message is; Alcohol is involved in fifty percent of all fatal house fires. So if you are planning to have a few, don’t get the frypan out, consider getting takeaways or use the microwave instead. The Brigade would like to wish everyone a happy and enjoyable festive season and you are able to enjoy some of your time with family and friends. Stay safe.

The ambulance station at Oxford is not manned 24 hours a day. If you require emergency assistance please call 111. I would like to wish everyone a very happy and healthy 2024
