the day after William Faulkner’s funeral, discovering a town steeped in the segregated values of the “Old South.” African-American sharecroppers driving mule pulled carts through town contrasted sharply with the opulence of the National Baton Twirling Institute. With his keen journalistic eye, Southern observed the complacent bigotry of a society on the verge of a civil rights explosion. Southern’s cool deliberate prose poignantly foreshadowed the desegregation riots that occurred only a few months later on the campus of Ole Miss. Twirling at Ole Miss has been cited by Tom Wolfe as one of the defining works of the New Journalism and as such it was included in Wolfe and A.W. Johnson’s anthology The New Journalism. As winner of the ScreenPlay contest, John M. Tyson received a trip to the festival, the table read and a cash prize of $1000 in addition to a mentorship from screenwriter/producer John Norris (profiled below with Saturday’s 4:00 panel).
