the second table: only around 60% of his yearlings offered were sold but those that did continued to return a decent average compared to his fee of £10,000. The most profitable stallion by average compared to fee is Gilt Edge Girl’s sire, Monsieur Bond, whose 2008 fee of £3,500 dropped to £2,000 last year and is back up to £3,000 for 2011, though the team at Norton Grove Stud, where he stands, offered him at his 2010 fee for quick-thinking breeders who booked their mares to him before the end of October. While the fee multiples are noteworthy, perhaps the most telling figures are the number of yearlings sold compared to the number offered, and the percentage of those yearlings that did actually find a buyer and sold in profit. These statistics do not always make for comfortable reading but the bare facts are here for each breeder to read and digest.

INDUSTRY COMMENT John Lynam, bloodstock economist: “From these 80 stallions, in only 17 cases was the median greater than the

cost of production; that’s frightening. Every breeder should be looking closely at the fees they are facing and making sure they were lower than in 2008. “While there are a lot of good stallions in Britain and Ireland whose fees are trying to reflect their ability, there aren’t enough mares who warrant that level of fee. Having a yearling by a good stallion only ensures your horse gets looked at – you have to have a good-looking yearling to make money.”

book is limited you will consider paying more because you have a better chance of getting into a decent sale. Nayef’s success, despite a moderate 2010, is because Shadwell limited his books at an affordable level. “Some wonderful proven stallions have become too non-commercial to breed from other than racing the offspring whilst only those new stallions priced sensibly could prosper. “Small breeders will become increasingly selective and need to in order to survive.”

Dena Arstall, owner, breeder and ROA Council member: “2010 was always going to be tough but these figures are shocking. “Breeders need to look at how many animals actually made profit when you take into consideration the foal crop of that stallion and that these figures represent the cream of those crops, bar at the top end where breeders will retain stock out of choice rather than necessity. “Stallion fees are still too high. If a

Ed Player, Whatton Manor Stud: “The figures make depressing but not unexpected reading. Whilst everybody will be clamouring for covering fees to be reduced, this is unlikely to happen due to the fact that there is such polaristion on popular stallions. “Most studs will continue to make all their profit from 20% of mares whilst the rest will continue to lose money.”
