The breeders of the Racing Post Trophy and Prix du Jockey-Club winner Celtic Swing inevitably tried to replicate the magic which had been generated when the colt’s dam, the Welsh Pageant mare Celtic Ring, visited Mr Prospector’s son Damister. A few months after Celtic Swing’s breathtaking display in the 1994 Racing Post Trophy, Celtic Ring visited Lion Cavern, another son of Mr Prospector, to produce the filly Celtic Fling. Unfortunately, Celtic Fling proved to have little of her three-parts brother’s brilliance, though she did win over a mile at three. However, she has more than made amends as a broodmare, with help from the perennially underrated Hernando. Their first foal, Celtic Heroine, earned a Timeform rating of 111 with her victory in the Sandringham Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2004. That prompted a repeat mating and the pairing’s 2006 foal is the progressive Rainbow Peak, who became Hernando’s sixth Gr1 winner when he won the Gran Premio del Jockey Club. Rainbow Peak’s third dam, the twice-raced Pencuik Jewel, was a half-sister to three notable individuals, namely Ragstone, winner of the 1974 Gold Cup, Castle Keep, a very smart middle-distance stayer, and Castle Moon. The last-named found fame as the dam of Moon Madness (St Leger and Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud), Sheriff’s Star (Coronation Cup and Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud) and Lucky Moon (Goodwood Cup). These horses shone for the Duke of Norfolk, who introduced the family to his stud with the purchase of Rainbow Peak’s fifth dam, La Fresnes, for 17,000 guineas from Lord Derby. La Fresnes had been first past the post in the 1955 Molecomb and Lowther Stakes, and also had a firstrate pedigree, being a granddaughter of the wartime 1,000 Guineas and St Leger winner Herringbone. Herringbone was herself a daughter of the famous mare Schiaparelli.
