2012 OWENS EXPRESS SOFTBALL YEAR IN REVIEW
Overview The Express softball team posted its second consecutive 40 plus win season for the first time in program history last year. Their season ended just one win away from a spot in the Region XII championship game. The sophomore class completed the most successful two-year run in program history as they combined to go 85-12 overall. That run included two OCCAC championships, one Region XII championship and an appearance in the national title game two years ago - the best finish in program history. Ashlyn Michalak anchored the pitching staff as she went 17-4 and struk out 202 batters in 147.2 innings. She is now playing for Valparaiso. Two freshmen outfielders, Melanie Iacoangeli (.538) and Mareshah Scott (.458), led the team in hitting. They combined to go 99-for-106 in stolen base attempts. Sophomore Michelle Hollister, now playing at UM-Dearborn, completed a highly successful two-year career with a .383 batting average and teamhighs in home runs (5) and RBIs (48). Another sophomore, RHP Kasey Graham, went 13-1 with a 2.12 ERA and is now pitching for Lourdes University. Sophomore catcher Tayler Redinger moved on to Siena Heights University.

2012 OWENS EXPRESS SOFTBALL YEAR IN REVIEW 2012 Year In Review The Express softball team finished 41-7 overall and 8-0 in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) last season. The won the OCCAC championship and finished third in the Region XII tournament. Back-To-Back 40 Win Seasons For the first time in program history, the Express posted their second consecutive 40 plus win season. After tying a single season mark with 44 wins in 2011, the 2012 Express broke the 40 win mark in the Region XII tournament. Sophomore Class The sophomore class of Sydney Barron, Ashlyn Michalak, Hallie Thompson, Michelle Hollister, Tayler Redinger, Kasey Graham, Tabitha Britt and Allison Hausch finished the most successful two-year run in program history thanks in large part to their individual performances. Hollister teamed with Bridget Wolfe to hit back-to-back home runs that snapped a tie game in the fifth inning of the Region XII championship game in 2011. The homers turned out to be the difference in the game. Earlier in that tournament, Hausch hit a walk-off home run to give the Express a 2-1 win over Kalamazoo Valley in

the winner’s bracket final against one of the nation’s best pitchers, Sara Heath. Graham posted a two-year record of 18-1 to go along with a 2.16 ERA and 74 strikeouts. Barron, Thompson and Britt played reserve roles on the national runner-up team in 2011 before becoming major keys to the success of the 2012 team. Each of those three had highlights that helped the Express continue their success in 2012. Thompson had two triples, two runs and an RBI to help the Express improve to 20-2 with a 4-3 win over Mercyhurst North East on April 14. Britt went 3-for-3 with three runs and a grand slam against against Lakeland on April 26 that helped the Express finish with a perfect conference record. It was her only career home run. Barron went 3-for-7 with three RBIs over two games against CCBC-Catonsville in the Myrtle Beach trip that helped the Express get two early season victories. Redinger had two hits, two walks and an RBI in two appearances in the national tournament as a freshman. Michalak had numerous fine performances through her two-year career including the complete game victory over No. 2 Kankakee that sent the Express to the national championship game her freshman year, and her seven inning, 19 strikeout performance in the season opener of her sophomore year against Olney Central that broke a program record for most strikeouts in one game.
Melanie Iacoangeli (21) nearly broke the program’s single season record with a .538 batting average while racking up 66 stolen bases. In the background of the picture is Ashlyn Michalak, who struck out a record 19 batters in the game pictured here.

Overall, in their two years, those sophomores helped lead the Express to a record of 85-12 (44-5 in 2011 and 41-7 in 2012). They won two OCCAC titles, one Region XII District G championship, and were the NJCAA D-II national runner-up in 2011. That was the highest finish of any women’s sports team in Owens history. They were also part of a record 33-0 start to the 2011 season.

2012 OWENS EXPRESS SOFTBALL YEAR IN REVIEW Scott hit .583 in OCCAC play, while Iacoangeli hit .583 and Britt hit .522. Head coach Duane Lanham, meanwhile, picked up OCCAC Coach of the Year honors. All-Region Honorees Michalak and Iacoangeli were named First Team All-Region XII, while Michalak and Britt took home All-Region XII tournament team honors. Team Awards Hollister was named the team’s MVP, Britt was named Most Improved, Iacoangeli was the team’s offensive player of the year, Michalak was the team’s top defensive player and Scott was named the team’s Heart of a Champion recipient. Michalak and Hollister’s Legacy Michalak, as a pitcher, and Hollister, as an offensive threat and defensive playmaker, will go down as two of the greatest softball players in Express history.
Ashlyn Michalak Regional Final Streak Snapped After their loss to Kalamazoo Valley in last year’s loser’s bracket final, the Express had their string of Region XII championship game appearances snapped at three. In 2009 and 2010, the Express lost in the championship game - including a 2010 loss to Muskegon, who went on to win the national championship. Then, in 2011, the Express defeated Kalamazoo Valley to advance to nationals.
As a sophomore, Michalak went 17-4 with a 1.56 ERA and 202 strikeouts in 147.2 innings pitched. In her freshman year, she went 11-1 with 77 strikeouts in 59 innings. She threw a perfect game in her collegiate debut and a no-hitter against Lakeland as a sophomore. Hollister hit .383 with 37 runs, 46 hits, 18 doubles, two triples, five home runs, 13 walks, 14 stolen bases and 48 RBIs as a sophomore. As a freshman, she hit .378 with 27 runs, 42 hits, 15 doubles, one triple, four home runs, 11 walks and 39 RBIs. In seven games during the national tournament, she hit .318 (7-for-22) with four runs, two doubles, one home run and six RBIs. Among players in the 2012 sophomore class, Hollister was perhaps the most integral one as a freshman. Then, as a sophomore, she was the only player to start all 48 games.
5th Consecutive OCCAC Championship In 2012, the Express captured their fifth consecutive OCCAC championship. In those five years, they went 45-3 in conference play - including three undefeated seasons. Oddly enough, their worst conference season in that stretch came from the 2011 national runner-up team, who went 6-2. Overall, the Express have won 11 OCCAC championships since the program’s inception in 1999. All-OCCAC Honorees Hollister and Michalak were named the OCCAC Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively. Hollister hit .381 with nine runs, six doubles, one home run, three stole bases and 10 RBIs in conference play, while Michalak went 4-0 with a 1.50 ERA and 27 strukouts in 23.1 innings. Those two, along with Britt, Melanie Iacoangeli and Mareshah Scott were First Team All-OCCAC selections. Hollister was the eighth player of the year selection in Express softball history, while Michalak was the sixth player to earn the conference’s highest pitching honor.

2012 OWENS EXPRESS SOFTBALL YEAR IN REVIEW Myrtle Beach Success Over the past two seasons, the Express have posted a 16-1 record against NJCAA D-I, NJCAA D-II and NAIA teams in Myrtle Beach. Two-Sport Athletes Shortstop Alyssa Lassey and third baseman Aja Hall finished their basketball seasons with the Express last year and then joined the Express softball team. Hall was only the second Express women’s basketball player to score at least 1,000 points in her two-year career, while Lassey was mainly a freshman reserve, although she started some games. On the softball field, both experienced success as Lassey hit over .400, while Hall hit .385. They combined to start 27 games.
Glad was tied for sixth (.383).
Both student-athletes were presented with Exemplary Academic Achievement honors as Graham had a 3.73 GPA, while Thompson had a 3.62 GPA.
Iacoangeli and Scott also combined to steal 99 bases in 106 attempts. Scott was a perfect 33-for-33. Additionally, they each combined for 136 hits.
They are among only 73 student-athletes to achieve that honor in the college’s athletic history. Among those 73, 16 have come from the softball program - including those two.
Players Moving On Michalak will continue her athletic career at NCAA D-I Valparaiso University, Graham is now at Lourdes University, Hollister is at University of Michigan-Dearborn and Redinger is at Siena Heights University. Other players had opportunities, but chose to focus on their academic careers at four-year schools. For example, Thompson is now attending The Ohio State University.
Freshmen Outfield Sensations Iacoangeli (.538), Scott (.458) and Amanda Sinay (.444) were the team’s top three producers in batting average - all as freshmen, while a fourth freshman outfielder Jaylee
