Giant Celebration is a three-day, annual community celebration held in Le Sueur. This summer’s celebration will mark the 25th year that Giant Celebration has taken place on the first weekend of August. Following the tradition of Le Sueur’s Corn on the Curb celebrations of the past, Giant Celebration prides itself on creating an event that the entire community looks forward to as an annual rite of summer. All three days there are food and drink booths, a family oriented Midway with rides and games, and events for people – ages 2 to 92 – held outdoors in the center of town in American Legion Park. Friday night kicks off the weekend with live dance band music. Saturday features Giant Fun Runs and softball tournaments, children’s activities, stage entertainment and much more. The Ney Nature Center A Nature Center in the Minnesota Valley P. O. Box 93 ~ 28003 Nature Center Road, Henderson MN 56044 (507) 248-3474 – www.neycenter.corg; info@neycenter.org The Ney Nature Center is a 446-acre Environmental Learning Center and Le Sueur County Park located on the bluffs of the Minnesota River near Henderson. The property is adjacent to the old East Henderson Depot and village site, which has public access to the Minnesota River. It is open to the public for hiking, birdwatching, and cross country skiing. it also serves a a regional teaching station for Community Education and Ney Foundation programming. The center also has facilities available for rent for such events such as weddings, private parties and meetings. Education – The Ney Nature Center is a day-use learning center designed to serve people of all ages. Programming for the general public is generally organized through the Ney Environmental Education Foundation. The Ney Nature Center’s Program Committee organizes curriculum for K-12 schools. The Ney Nature Center also serves as a teaching station and outdoor laboratory for area colleges and universities. Bird Watching – The Ney Nature Center’s open prairies, thick woods, and pond provide habitat for a variety of bird species. Hiking trails provide many opportunities to see them up close. The eastern bluffs of the river valley create breezy updrafts that attract soaring raptors. From the Pond Loop Trail, migrating waterfowl can be observed on stopovers on their long journey. From the meadows into the deep ravine trail, birders report many species of warblers. A feeding station, maintained by Ney volunteers, can be viewed

22

from the comfort of the interpretive center. The Ney Nature Center is also a stop on the Audubon Minnesota Great River Birding Trail. The Ney Pond – The now-famous Ney Pond, widely recognized as the site of the discovery of deformed frogs in 1995, was originally “just a slough” when European settlers arrived in the mid-1800s. One can only imagine the plethora of wildlife that existed in and around the prairie pothole wetland when small scale farming began here. As agriculture expanded in the early 1900s, the pond was drained to make way for more cropland. Highly productive in drought years, less so in wet cycles, crop production at the site was inconsistent. Ruby Ney’s vision of letting the land go back to nature was realized when she had the pond restored in 1989. Once again, the poind is host to a variety of waterfowl and attracts mammals such as coyote, deer, racccoons and fox. Of course, the pond is also host to numerous frog species. Deformities have declined to a near normal rate since the large populations of deformed frogs in 1995 and 1996. Ruby would likely be pleased to see that her vision has become reality at Ney Pond! Keep up with the Ney Center’s busy schedule on the web neycenter.org. To get to the Ney Center take Hwy. 19 east from Henderson for 2 miles. At the top of the hill, turn right on to Nature Center Lane. From Hwy 169, take Hwy 19 west towards Henderson. Before going down the hill, turn left on Nature Center Lane.

Lake Washington County Park

Lake Washington is the most developed and used lake in Le Sueur County. The property includes the outlet of the lake through Shankaska Creek which leaves the lake through a deep, narrow, winding gorge of recent geologic origin. This creek valley serves as a runway for wild game between Lake Washington on the east and Lake Piaza on the west. It is one of the outstanding terrain features of the park. The creek flows out of a shallow bay which contains the last extensive undisturbed spawning bed for the fish of the lake and which is protected from intrusion by large power boats by a rock bar that separates it from the main body of the lake. On the park grounds is a building equipped with a full basement. The building can be reserved for any occaision by calling Le Sueur County at 507-357-2251. Address: 41702 Washington Park Road
