(PERSONAL ESSAY) Being a part of this amazing yearbook staff has given me the opportunity to contribute to my school while improving my passion. This opportunity has made me feel as though I have grown tremendously as a writer. I have a passion for telling stories and being a part of the school yearbook staff allows me to do that. I have been able to contribute to my fellow classmates by helping to create this book. The skills that I possess that are required to produce a publication are design and writing skills. These skills along with communication were assets to have organization on the sports section. People move away and memories fade, but yearbooks help people remember all the good times they had. The yearbook staff had shown me how much I love sharing my words with others. I will take all the skills that I have learned in this class with me in life. I was an asset to this edition because I met all deadlines and I was able to help others on their work. Lastly, I contributed to the staff because I was willing to make sacrifices and devote myself to my work.

(REFLECTION) Of all the pages and stories that I have designed and wrote this year I am most pleased with the boys lacrosse spread. I like this spread the best because i worked very hard on it by myself. I finished and met the deadline and I proved to myself that hard work really pays off. I not only designed the page but I also wrote the copy and captions. I first designed the spread and added in pictures. I then identified every person on the page by talking to the coach and team players. After I identified people I received interviews and created a story on how they have improved by having a new coach. This shows my abilities in the journalism field because it shows that I am able to use communication skills among others to create a spread. There was plenty of difficulties that I had to overcome, such as not having enough pictures or not being able to identify a person. I had to overcome them by communicating to the photographers and contacting coaches via email to receive the information that I needed.

(STAFF) This year I was faced with not having enough pictures to finish a spread or getting an interview where I couldn’t use anything. I also faced problems with time management and not being able to stay after school on the days needed due to further engagements. To handle these problems I had to use my communication skills to set up dates for photographers to get pictures. When I had an interview where nothing good was given to me I had to dig deeper and ask more questions. To handle my time management I started staying during lunch to finish things needed to be done. I feel that I would handle the problems the same way if they arose again. I learned that I can overcome many things and if I keep working hard I can finish anything. Yearbook has taught me that time management is important and dedication can be applied to life. I would say to future staff members coping with the same issues that if they work hard and stay determined they will be able to finish all deadlines. I don’t have any suggestions for the advisor that would improve the staff or production process because we all did our best and I feel that this year has been great.

(MEMORIES) My fondest memory from my time on staff has been staying for lunch. During lunch the sports section of the yearbook staff would stay to finish work and this is where I met new lifelong friends. I recall laughter and support from my section this year and even after the book was finished we would continue to eat in the yearbook room. This class has helped me in more ways than I can count. I went into the school year not having many friends because I moved from North Carolina to Florida. Yearbook has helped me meet people I wouldn’t have met otherwise which I am very grateful for. My peers would always help get interviews and help to finish modules that needed work done. These memories stand out the most to me because it made me realize that I’m not in this alone. The most positive aspects of this yearbook class is the kindness of every person I have met. The whole staff welcomes new people with open arms and it makes me so glad that I decided to join.
