TYPOGRAPHY

For this project, I started by deciding what theme I wanted to cover and I decided on the Black Death. After I picked the theme I then decided on which font I wanted to use I chose Gothic/Black Letter. I then hand drew the word Gothic in Gothic lettering and took a picture of it. After, I opened a letter sized page in Ai and first picked my color scheme. Then I designed my frame and wrote the main title. After I traced the hand drawing I did. Next I made the abstract symbol and found the picture of the rat I used as well. Lastly I wrote my information section about the Black Death.

For this project we were tasked with creating another lettering page design, the theme of which was: Type Face’s anatomical details, Width and Weight. We were given the option of choosing to research one of the many languages listed or one of the many typography terms listed. I chose to research Irish as a language. I created my page layout and then did my hand drawing. I then created my tracing and used that to create my abstract image. I then uploaded a photo of the Irish flag and lastly I wrote and formatted my research section.

FALL 2023

For this week’s assignment we were asked to design a page regarding lettering from the Renaissance. I firstly decided that I wanted to make my theme Shakespeare. This theme greatly influenced the design of the page overall. I then chose my font (granjon italic). I drew out the word Midsummer and then traced in illustrator. I also designed the frame elements and composed those elements. Lastly I wrote my information about Shakespeare and chose an image that relates to one of Shakespeare’s plays ‘Hamlet’.

TYPOGRAPHY

For this project we needed to choose a theme for typography during colonization and industrialization so I chose the American Revolution. I sketched out my page design and frame and then picked out my words and drew out the words in Caslon font. I then traced out the words. I created my frame and chose my main colors. I then composed everything I had done so far. The next thing I did was make the abstract piece. The last two things I did were write out my information, and then choose an image and make it into the vector outlines.

For this project we had to complete a page design for the Early Twentieth- Century typography. The first thing I did was pick my theme of Pop Art. From there I researched some fonts until I found one that I felt fit the theme. Peignot was the font I came to picking, but I then had to find a similar equivalent so I used the Pinot Grigio Modern font from adobe which match pretty well. After that I picked out my word, drew it out and then traced it in illustrator. I then built my frame and found the image I wanted to use for my research section. I then made my abstract piece. Lastly, I created my research section.

For this project, we were tasked with creating a Lettering Page for ‘The Swiss Design Style/International Typographic Style’. Firstly, I went through the themes and fonts listed on the assignment page. I chose Disco Music with the font ITC Souvenir, adobe doesn’t have souvenir available as a font so I searched for a similar one and found P22 Mackinac which is remarkably similar. I then made a frame and blocking for the page, based on disco and the 70s. I then drew out my word on paper, and put it into illustrator to trace it. I highlighted some font anatomy, and then I began to research Disco. I wrote out my info and then formatted it on the page. The last thing I did was make the abstract image based on the letters I traced.

For this project, we were tasked with creating a Lettering Page Design for Contemporary Typography and Digital Technology. The first thing I did was pick out a Theme and Font from the list made for the chapter. I chose Macintosh as my theme, seeing as I wanted to learn more about the creation of the Macintosh by Apple. Based on some of that research I then chose the Chicago font, a font specifically designed for Apple, which was used on the first Macintosh that was

created. I then made my basic page format, created my framing elements, based vaguely on the Macintosh screen. I then hand drew the word Macintosh, uploaded it onto illustrator, and traced it using the pen tool. I then copied letters from my trace to create my abstract image. The last thing I did was format the research section.

For this project, we were tasked with creating a Lettering page design for Type Identification and Classification. We were given fairly free reign on which font we wanted to work with, so I chose Copperplate. I think its an interesting looking font and looks very sharp. I started by researching Copperplate and its characteristics and I wrote my research section first. Then I formatted the page layout, including the different boxes, the frame and the research. I then drew out the name of the font copperplate and uploaded it to illustrator where I traced it out. I then labeled some of the anatomical terms and finally made any last final touches that needed to be adjusted.

FALL 2023 This week we were asked to create a tabloid sized document and to create text boxes of our favorite song lyrics. The first thing I did was create a tabloid sized illustrator document, I also added a second art board so I could have extra space to work on whilst I was getting shapes and fonts down. Once I had the work edited I deleted the second art board. The next thing I did was search through my music and find some songs. I then copied the lyrics over to illustrator. I formatted each text box together including title and singer/band. I then chose fonts for each text box to vary the grey value of each song. The last thing I did was create an image from punctuation. I used mainly periods but then went in and added other interesting looking punctuation and symbols.

For this project we were tasked with creating a logo for a local South Florida business, either redesigning a currently existing logo or creating a new (currently) non-existant logo. I chose to work on the latter, coming up with the idea of Cosmic Pizzeria! The idea was loosely based off of the Pizza Planet chain in the ‘Toy Story’ movies by Pixar. I wanted it to feel like a fun pizzeria based on space themeing and I wanted it to have a lot of fun colorful elements. I designed it to be something enjoyed by the whole family. I chose colors, fonts, and shapes that are eye catching and memorable.

This week we were tasked with creating 2 facing magazine pages, in a fairly traditional style. I chose to use accents of purple along with the white page and black lettering. I wanted to use a simple, easy to read font that still felt fairly sophisticated. I chose Baskerville, both because I enjoy the look of it as well as the variety of the font options in its family. I then formatted the pages, making columns and sub-headlines, and copied the wikipedia page of Dolly Parton. I also chose a photo and some small stats to put in the magazine. I finally added some finishing touches and tweaks and then submitted.

TYPOGRAPHY

This week we were tasked with creating more creative, modern magazine pages. I wanted to something with a large photo in the center of the page and decided it would be interesting to use a round image like a sunflower. I then layout large color blocks, and some specific shaped textboxes to fit in those color blocks and to fit around the sunflower petals. I then chose fonts and sizes to create a certain amount of hierarchy between the text.
