Our NEW website! www.outonthetownmag.com

Editor’s Note: Hey, y’all! We wrap up our second year in business and get ready to start our third. We’ve gone through a lot of growth in 2011; we are now in 23 media markets across seven states now, while at the beginning of the year we served 11 media markets in four. We’ve doubled our reach in a year and even though it’s been 16 issues, I feel like we’re just getting started! For 2012, expect the return of some features that I personally liked but couldn’t fit in some issues, such as “The View from Here,” “On TV,” “In the Studio,” and “Local Notables.” Also, I am debating moving the bars and clubs listings to our website full-time to give the readers more content. What do you think? Sound off on our facebook page; the URL is listed right here on this page. I want to know what ideas you have that you’d like to see implemented so Out on the Town can continue to adequately serve the Deep and Mid-South. E-mail me at mike@outonthetownmag.com and let’s get the ball rolling! On the cover of our very first issue in September 2010, I wrote the tagline “Because it’s our time and we deserve it!” As the dominant GLBT media in this area, we do deserve something great, and it’s my job to keep on working to make it even greater. Thanks to our readers and loyal advertisers for making 2011 great, and let’s get to work on making 2012 even better! Respectfully Yours, Mike Halterman Publisher/Editor-in-Chief

TORI MATTISON’S LOWDOWN

Tori Mattison’s LOWD¥WN

¥ It’s the most wonderful time of the year... for most! I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I enjoyed my day with five very close friends and a huge turkey, lots of laughs and even more love. Now it’s time to gear up for pushing, cussing and snatching gifts away from other people for Christmas. Personally, I used to love shopping for gifts to give my loved ones, but I had a little incident seven years ago where I was escorted out of Walmart for slapping a bitch over the last red headed Cabbage Patch Doll. Since then, it has kinda lost its luster. This year for Christmas, I’m planning on going to the coast to spend the holidays with a loved one and his family. I have a show at Bottoms Up on the 3rd and after that I will be taking the rest of the month off to focus on work and money... and ordering gifts online. This year for the holidays, the publisher of the magazine picked out some entertainers that he wanted to be featured this month. This couldn’t have happened at a better time because I’m still burdened with the hassle of getting everything unpacked and organized at the new house, so I was able to step back a little and have him take the reins for this month. He picked out five fabulous queens, and I was super-excited to hear how they’re planning on spending their holidays!

Sarina Styles is representing Louisiana and can be found every Saturday at Central Station in Shreveport. Central Station is a two story building with four rooms: the country side, disco side, upstairs show bar and video bar, so you can find something for everyone there. Shows are every Friday and Saturday, with a permanent cast of seven entertainers, as well as out of town guests. When asked her favorite aspect of the bar, she states, “My favorite thing about the bar is the people that work there and make the bar come to life. Without the DJ there wouldn’t be any hot music or crazy lights for customers or the queens. The bartenders are friendly and always making sure the customers and the queens are taken care of drink wise. Without those things we would just look funny with no music, lights, and also some thirsty queens.” Agreed, honey! So, what

have you got planned for Christmas this year? “I always attend Central Station’s staff Christmas celebration, which is normally held the Sunday before Christmas. This celebration is where all the friends and family of Central Station bring food to snack on and toys to be donated to Toys for Tots. This Christmas I will be hosting a Christmas party, at my house, for the girls on cast along with friends and family. My house is always decorated to the nines with plenty of food, sweets, punch, and adult beverages for all to enjoy. Last year I had three Christmas trees all in different themes. This Christmas will be the first Christmas in my newly purchased home and I can’t wait to start decorating!” Taylor Heart parties in Florida, and can be seen captivating crowds with her amazing “nude” numbers at Emerald City in Pensacola. With only two years under her wig, Taylor is learning fast and rising to stardom even faster. “Being that I’m only 20 and have only been doing this for 2 years, I’m quite proud of myself for already getting to where I’m at in my career. I’m doing things now that most queens dont get to experence untill they are quite seasoned.” Emerald City is a large bar with a spacious dance floor that offers drink specials throughout the week. “One of the things that make me love working there so much is the fact that we cater to everyone. It’s a huge mix of homos, straights, and everything in between! My favorite part about working at Emerald City is the fact that the entire staff is one big crazy family.” Emerald City gets very busy during the holiday season, so Taylor will be working for Christmas as part of the Christmas show with several other entertainers. Tyler Rane is the show director at Tangerine in Fayetteville, Arkansas and has been twirling for 12 years. She is the current reigning Miss Fayetteville Arkansas Gay united States and can be seen every Saturday alongside a great cast of entertainers. Tangerine is a cozy little home away from home. Upstairs has a lounge area and Karaoke room, with a show area downstairs and a bi-level patio for those who want fresh air. “We usually have a pretty mixed crowd,

8 | OUT ON THE TOWN | THE DEEP SOUTH’S HOTTEST GLBT MAGAZINE

we don’t have a specific group that we cater to. We have something for everyone if you know where to look.” When asked what her favorite aspect of the bar is, she replies, “The thing I love about the club is the staff! Everyone there treats me like a queen and the crowd is definitely a bonus! Adam, the owner, has put a lot of time into making the bar the best place possible. Dusty and Hawley, the bartenders, know how to take care of us.” For Christmas this year, Tyler plans on being snuggled in bed watching movies. “I love to be surrounded by my family and friends. ‘Tis the season to spend time with the ones we love! My gay family is just as dear to me as my biological family and I plan on spending time with BOTH my families!” Mercedes Alexander is a permanent fixture at Club Veaux in Biloxi, Mississippi, alongside two other set cast and many special guests. Club Veaux is a small bar with a big personality located only blocks from the Gulf and strip. Mercedes primarily works there, but can be seen at Just Us from time to time. Veaux caters to all walks of life with open arms and welcomes everyone to visit and enjoy the atmosphere. One side is the bar and socializing section, while the other half has the DJ booth and stage for shows. This Christmas, Mercedes decided to do things a little different. “In the past most of my holidays have been spent working; however, I have always made time to spend with my family. I am in a 10-year relationship and enjoy my personal time with him and my five little dogs.” Scoot on over to Alabama and have a little chat with Cierra Symone Campbell, who is the LIVE sensation of Al’s on Seventh in Birmingham. Cierra has been a permanent

¥

fixture at Al’s for three years now, and loves every minute of it! “It has two bars on the inside with five plasma screen televisions, pool tables, dart games, luxury style sofas and love seats. The patio is huge. There is a bar outside as well, with another plasma screen TV. The patio is enclosed and private. Then we have the showbar with ample enough seating and state-of-the-art lighting and sound boards. Needless to say, I LOVE my club!” Al’s caters to all audiences, gay and straight, but a mature audience tends to frequent. “I like to think of Al’s as an upscale bar. We have straight girl bachelorette parties, birthday party groups, even bar mitzvahs! We love the gays and also our straight audience. They love coming to Al’s to see the show and dance all night afterwards.” When asked about Christmas, Cierra says, “I love spending the holiday, first and foremost, with my husband of three years. His family has welcomed me into their lives and has embraced our relationship. So normally I spend the holiday with him and his family then I venture off to my family; my “Campbell” family, that is. The Campbells always spent the holidays together enjoying each other’s company. I wouldn’t trade them for any other family in the world. I love you guys.” From the bottom of my heart, I want to wish each and every one of you a wonderful holiday season. I may not associate with my biological family anymore, but I would never trade my unconventional family for anything else. I believe that family is whoever loves and accepts you for who you are, and if you’re not getting that at home, you deserve it so find it elsewhere. Oh, and I’ve also learned that slapping someone over the last “hot item” is not worth it, so find something different and move on!

COVER STORY BEST OF 2011: THE WINNERS ARE...

The year is coming to a close and Out on the Town Magazine has concluded their second annual “Best of...” awards for the Deep South. This year we focused on the very popular categories of “Best Bar/Club” and “Best Female Impersonator.” Those categories were very popular and literally thousands of votes were cast via our facebook page, facebook.com/ outonthetown. Some of our winners are already familiar faces to Out on the Town readers, being featured in some fashion or other in the past, or were past “Best of...” winners. A lot of 2011’s winners, however, were completely new, having been nominated by readers for the very first time. Here’s a rundown of the people the readers chose, as well as the runners-up and who last year’s winner was in the same category.

BEST BAR/CLUB

ALABAMA

FLORIDA PANHANDLE [ Al’s on Seventh ]

[ Splash Bar Florida ] Splash Bar Florida, celebrating their 10th anniversary this year, also celebrates winning the Best Bar/Club award for the Florida Panhandle twice in a row. Twice-profiled in the pages of Out on the Town Magazine, they were the runaway winners of our fan vote from the beginning. This surely must make owners Tony Boswell and Laurence Lassiter very proud! A popular year-round party spot, Splash really shines during Panama City’s famed Spring Break.

Al’s on Seventh is the second of two bars to repeat their 2010 victory. Last time we profiled it, however, it was named Joe’s on Seventh, and the party staple has underwent a name change and two managerial changes since then. With that being said, the loyal crowds who frequent the bar are still coming out in droves, making it quite the contender in Birmingham’s nightlife scene. Come for the drinks and stay for the DJ and the drag. 2011 Runner-Up: Dothan Dance Club (Dothan, AL) 2010 Winner: Joe’s on Seventh (now Al’s on Seventh)

2011 Runner-Up: Emerald City (Pensacola, FL) 2010 Winner: Splash Bar Florida

MISSISSIPPI

LOUISIANA

[ Bottoms Up ]

[ The Korner Lounge ]

Bottoms Up opened in Jackson last year and owner Ray Pados must be happy to see that under his watch, the club has grown to become one of the city’s only large-scale dance halls, but also a fan favorite with Jackson’s GLBT community and allies alike. The best and brightest in Mississippi drag perform shows here, including pageant favorite Tanisha Foxx who hosts a revue on Fridays!

Our “Best of...” awards included Louisiana for the first time in 2011. As our magazine’s readership has especially caught on in north and central parts of the state, it isn’t surprising that The Korner Lounge, owned by Rex Dirks, had many of its fans vote it as the best bar in the state. Located in Shreveport, the bar got many approving comments via e-mail to the publisher for our previous bar profile and for their “Absolutely Korner” advertising, which was designed by them. Fun can be found here seven days a week.

2011 Runner-Up: Suga Shak (Meridian, MS, since closed)

2010 Winner: P3 (Hattiesburg, MS, since closed, 2011 Runner-Up: Uniques Bar (Alexandria, LA) owner now runs Club Veaux in Biloxi, MS) HONORARY MENTION

ARKANSAS

[ Speakeasy ] It was just this year that Speakeasy, located just two blocks off Fayetteville’s famed Dickson Street, made the transition from a straight bar to a gay one. However, it has continued to rack up awards and has been applauded for its format change (Citiscapes Magazine recognized Speakeasy as one of the best bars in all of Northwest Arkansas for the fifth year in a row). Owner and designer Sara Baker Ahaus, with her husband Shane, help everyone feel at home.

Tribe/Play in Nashville, TN and Martha’s Vineyard in Springfield, MO Usually when we enter a market, we go all-in, but in 2011 we entered the Tennessee and Missouri markets slowly, distributing at only choice locations like Tribe and Play in Nashville and Martha’s Vineyard in Springfield. Many of the bar patrons at these bars approved of our magazine and most importantly, tried to cast votes for their bars to get an award. Since these are the only bars in their respective states who get our magazine at the moment, we didn’t feel right having a statewide vote in which other bars would not be aware of us or that voting was going on. However, due to fan interest, we would like to give them honorary mention in our “Best of...” awards this year, as many feel these establishments are on their A-game!

2011 Runner-Up: Discovery (Little Rock, AR) 2010 Winner: Discovery (Little Rock, AR)

December 2011 - January 2012 | 11

BEST FEMALE IMPERSONATOR FLORIDA PANHANDLE [ Sapphire Nicole Rachels ] Sapphire is the show director at Splash Bar Florida in Panama City Beach. She has gone out of her way to introduce new readers to our magazine not only in PCB, but also in Dothan, Alabama, where she is from. She is the only queen to win her award twice in a row. You can see her at Splash and read her recurring advice column here in the pages of Out on the Town. 2011 Runner-Up: Regine Phillips (Pensacola, FL) 2010 Winner: Sapphire Nicole Rachels

ALABAMA [ Dynasty Iman Magiq ] Dynasty Iman Magiq, one of Huntsville’s Vieux Carre Playmates, burst onto our readers’ radars after she was profiled in Tori Mattison’s column this past summer. She won the reader vote quite handily, with over 600 of her fans casting their votes for her, the most of any impersonator on offer this year. After winning the award, she has found herself booked in other Alabama and Florida clubs. Do your thing, Miss Thing! 2011 Runner-Up: Genesis (Tuscaloosa, AL) 2010 Winner: Genesis (Tuscaloosa, AL)

MISSISSIPPI [ Mackenzie Azrael ] Mackenzie Azrael has performed for 12 years all across the South, specializing in her home

¥ state of Mississippi and at New Orleans’ Southern Decadence celebrations over Labor Day Weekend. She could most recently be seen at Suga Shak in Meridian but she may be taking her act on the road after that bar’s unfortunate closing back in November. When out of drag, Mackenzie works in mass media, and has written articles for Out on the Town in the past. 2011 Runner-Up: Tanisha Foxx (Jackson, MS)

[ Dynasty Iman Magiq ]

2010 Winner: Tori Mattison (Jackson, MS)

ARKANSAS

[ Taylor Madison Monroe ]

[ Mackenzie Azrael ]

Need we even go on about our current Miss Gay United States 2012 Taylor Madison Monroe? You read an up-close and personal interview with her just last month! A Fayetteville staple, she performs at Tangerine and the Dickson Street Theater, and from time to time at Kinkead’s in Fort Smith. She continues a tradition of Miss Gay Arkansas United States titleholders snatching our “Best of...” award; her predecessor was our winner last year. 2011 Runner-Up: Zia D’Yor (Little Rock, AR)

2010 Winner: Mya Alexander (Hot Springs, AR)

LOUISIANA

[ Bambi Bextor ]

[ Taylor Madison Monroe ]

It is not a surprise that Houma’s Bambi Bextor won our “Best of...” award this year; she was already recognized by the producers of RuPaul’s Drag Race this past winter and was a finalist in their “Ultimate Queen” fan contest. Bambi’s home bars are The Drama Club and Act II in Houma, and she can be seen at various times throughout the year taking her act on the road all over southeast Louisiana and in her native Mississippi.

2011 Runner-Up: Sarina Styles (Shreveport, LA)

BAR PROFILE Kinkead’s:

¥

The Place to Party in the River Valley By Jenee Fowler

Are you tired of the same old bars? Are you sick of the lack of heart and soul at your local haunt? If you want to change things up or you are one of the super-loyal regulars of Kinkead’s, in Fort Smith, Arkansas, your problems are solved. Here you will find a “long bar” with some big balls! And pageants! At 110 feet long and only 13 feet wide, Kinkead’s fits in a great Karaoke system with over 37,000 songs to choose from, awesome dance music and drag shows on the weekends, friendly bar staff, and a cozy atmosphere. Not to mention, cheap drinks! Kinkead’s dates back to 1995. Since then it has come a long way. John Michael Woughter is now the owner and it is his baby. He has remodeled to add a lounge area, removed the drop ceiling to open it up, and moved things that were blocking the stage. He also recently added the Buzztime Trivia/Texas Hold’em system that links players all over the U.S. and has plans for a second floor V.I.P. room and a patio over the sidewalk. When asked what it took to get Kinkead’s to where it is now John said, “I thank Kirby Maggard for teaching me how to run a business the right way... Also, I couldn’t have done it without the love and support of my partner of 11 years, Carl. He is always there to support me no matter what happens. Between those two people and a lot of years of hard work, it all paid off. I have the bar, I have the love of my life, and I have a lot of people I care about that come see me at work and we

have a blast.” It hasn’t always been easy. A year and a half ago John had a perforated appendix that had been leaking for a month. Then it got much worse, after five more days of pain he got up to to prepare for a pageant Kinkead’s was hosting and could barely walk. Turns out it had ruptured five days earlier and he had to be rushed to surgery, where he almost died. John was away from the bar for eight days and had the bar paperwork brought to the hospital so he could make sure everything was being done. That is the dedication and heart you will find at Kinkead’s. John says coming into his bar is a lot like the TV show “Cheers.” You will be greeted by a group of locals who want to get to know you and make you part of their group. It is friendly, open and a blast for any occasion. Even John gets in on the fun, using the stage name Jessica Powers. Stop by and check out happy hour everyday from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., $2 domestic beers, $3 well drinks and imports, and $1 shots all night every Friday and Saturday. Kinkead’s is open Tuesday through Saturday from 4:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. and they usually host at least one pageant a month. “We want Kinkead’s to be what it always has been, a place to get together with your friends and have a good time,” says John. So come check out one of Arkansas’ premiere drag bars with a welcoming attitude.

BAR PROFILE Martha’s Vineyard:

¥

Springfield’s Hottest Hot Spot By Cristina Marrero

Rodney Tucker and husband Logan opened Springfield, Missouri’s first gay bar, Martha’s Vineyard, approximately 21 years ago. When the owners started the alternative club, they strived to give Springfield something it had never seen before. Indeed, from all of Devion Mornett’s accounts, the couple achieved their goal. When I asked General Manager and female illusionist, Ms. Devion Mornett why Martha’s Vineyard was special, she proudly responded, “The original owners, Rodney and Logan, created a place where anyone could come no mater your race or creed or sexual orientation, and feel like they’re at home. And the owners now, Jamie Boren and Alen Browers, have continued on with that tradition.” However, Martha’s Vineyard is not just another night at home. Mondays are Game Show Night, while Tuesdays offer Devion’s Drag Race. Wednesdays are Whatever You Want Party Night with Busted Booger Bingo, and Thursdays offer up Club Sin. Fridays are just as hot with the Sirens of Seduction, but according to Mornett, Saturday night is the real weekly sampler. “Saturday nights are amazing! Saturday nights we try to combine everything that happens during the week,” And when Mornett says everything… she means everything: DJ Calvin Coxx, GO-GO dancers, strippers, shot people, and shows…. oh, my!

as long as they were entertaining, it [sexual orientation/gender] did not matter.” This open-minded attitude has proven successful, with approximately 45% of Martha’s client base being heterosexual. The alternative club has also never encountered any serious backlash from its presence in Springfield, MO. Perhaps this is because Martha’s Vineyard tries to have “something for everyone.” For more laid back clubbers, Martha’s Happy Hour is every Monday- Saturday from 5:00 to 9:00 PM. Around 7 PM, things start to pick up and by 9, the dance/bar side is open for the more adventurous club-goers. Upcoming events include a black and white ball on New Year’s Eve called “The Alpha & Omega Ball”, which Mornett promises to be unforgettable. Martha’s Vineyard has thrived in Springfield for 21 years, and Mornett attributes the success to the owners’ and managers’ forward thinking. “We always try to stay ahead in knowing what’s going on…” Martha’s also works with groups like GLO, and its owners donate a portion of yearly proceeds to charity in the business’s name.

So, if you are looking for a good time, and a worthy establishment, come out MondaySaturday and tell them Devion Mornett sent If you are looking for a fabulous and diverse you! For more specifics on specials and drag show, look no further! Martha’s has both events, you can find the hot alternative club female and male impersonators! “When Robyn on Facebook. CLUB WORQ HOPES TO CONTINUE “SMALL TOWN GAY BAR” LEGACY By Tori Mattison

In 2007, a film titled “Small Town Gay Bar” debuted across America, focusing primarily on a bar in Meridian, Mississippi called Crossroads. Shortly after the movie debuted, Crossroads closed, and Different Seasons opened in the same place. Shortly after, Different Seasons closed and the building remained vacant for several years. On October 29, Jamie Weeks decided to carry on the legacy and opened up Club Worq, Meridian’s newest installment to the bar scene. Located in the same historic building, Jamie has big plans to make Worq the best bar Meridian has ever had. “There are plans to do some upgrades and remodeling to the bar in the future. We are also planning on reaching out to the community by having some fun events such as softball and volleyball tournaments in the spring. There has also been talk of cookouts.”

a month; it’s hard to give an average [number of partygoers] because the crowds keep growing. I will say the house has been packed the past few weekends.” When asked why he chose Meridian to open a new bar, Jamie says, “Everyone in the community was asking for a place to go where they could have a good time so that’s how I chose Meridian. Now it’s Club Worq’s time to shine in this historic location.” He has many plans for drink specials, contests, and other numerous special events. “There is something in the works for Christmas but I won’t ruin the surprise by mentioning it here.”

Located at 5862 Harger Hill Road, Worq is set back privately in the woods and away from judgemental eyes.
