you are here Having worked at Outlook for the past 10 years, I’ve lead the publication through some amazing changes. When I started in 2004, we were known as Outlook Weekly, a tabloid newspaper with limited distribution across the state, mostly focused on Cleveland and Columbus. With the rise of Internet news sources and the instant dissemination of information via the web or smart device, the relevancy of a weekly niche news publication was antiquated at best. I was brought on by then-Publisher Malcolm Riggle to emulate work I had done at my old magazine in LA, Blur, and broaden Outlook from a news-only focus to a lifestyle publication. Since then, the magazine has transitioned in scope or style several times. In May 2009, we went monthly and changed our name to Outlook: Columbus Magazine. We upped the paper quality, added a glossy cover and introduced the tagline, Everything is Political. In 2012, we took the magazine full gloss. In 2013, we did a redesign and under our new Editor-inChief Bob Vitale’s leadership increased the quality and depth of our content. And now this year, we are at it once more. We redesigned the layout again, changed the size (slightly), improved the paper quality, and changed our tagline to The Voice of Ohio’s GLBT and Allied Community. And to that last point, we are very excited to say that by Pride, Outlook will once again be a statewide publication. Yeah! It’s a change that makes sense for us as a company, but more importantly, for us as the Ohio LGBT community. Taking a look at the political and social landscape of Ohio, we realized there wasn’t any publication that brings us all together. We are at the height of our struggle for equality in this state, and it’s important to have a unifying sounding board where we can all come together and talk about the issues at hand, as well as expose the rest of the world to our point of view. We seek to be that voice, that bridge and that umbrella. And not just in the political arena, but the recreation and entertainment avenues as well.

Ohio’s GLBT population is large and diverse, offering unique things to do in each city. One of the great things about Ohio is the amount and proximity of large urban areas, which makes it easy to take a road trip and explore queer life outside our hometowns. Outlook is going to help you do that each month. Whether it’s a new nightspot, charity event, sporting tournament, local LGBT business or Pride celebration, we’re excited to share what “Ohimo” is up to. This month’s edition is a testament to that. This film issue highlights the LGBT track of the Cleveland International Film Festival, which starts March 19. There are a ton of features, shorts and maybe-not-gay-but-directed-by-an-LGBT-person films. It’s definitely worth the trip. Outlook is sponsoring the screening of a documentary on California’s Prop 8, The Case Against 8, on the afternoon of Saturday, March 22, so we hope to see you there! Sometimes change is good; other times it’s just sad. I’d be remiss if I didn’t take a moment to recognize the passing of a great community leader and business owner, John Katsaros. John was the owner of Cleveland’s Twist Social Club. He was one of the nicest people I have ever met, his smile contagious and his commitment to our community inspirational. He will be greatly missed, and our hearts go out to his family, friends and his partner, Rob Torma, and their daughter. And last but not least: my annual call for Irish Pirates. Every year, my roaming group of St Paddy’s Day mates sets sail on a grand Irish drinking excursion. All are welcome, as long as you like to dress up like a pirate, eat kegs and eggs before there’s red sky in the morning, and you can “Arrrrrrggg” with the best of ’em. Facebook Adds 56 New Gender-Identity Options

John Katsaros, the owner of Cleveland’s Twist Social Club, died on Feb 16 of cancer. “John embodied and exemplified a consistent message of togetherness,” said Todd Saporito, president of Cleveland Pride. “He frequently was one of our leaders who often asked, ‘How can I help?’ before asked.” He was voted Cleveland’s favorite gay-bar owner in 2007 by readers of Scene, and he received city government’s LGBT Heritage Award in 2009. Katsaros also was credited with saving the Dancin’ in the Streets fundraiser of the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland when it was losing money in 2004. The task force, which honored Katsaros in 2012, called him “an incredible friend and community advocate.”
Wall Street Nightclub, Building Up for Sale
Wall Street Nightclub, the oldest operating LGBT bar in Columbus, is for sale. Owners have listed both the business and the building at 144 N. Wall St. The asking price is $699,900 for the three-story Downtown building and $329,900 for the 26year-old nightclub.

Mary Jo Hudson, who made history in 2004 as the first openly gay member of the Columbus City Council, was chosen in February to fill a vacancy on the Columbus school board. She’s the first openly gay member of that body as well. Hudson, 51, most recently served on a community panel appointed by Mayor Michael B. Coleman to examine Columbus City Schools’ operations in the wake of a data-rigging scandal. She replaces Carol Perkins, who resigned in January.
Hudson is an attorney with the Columbus law firm Bailey Cavalieri. She left the City Council in 2007 to lead the Ohio Department of Insurance under Gov. Ted Strickland. She left that job after the Democrat was defeated by John Kasich.
School Rejects Anti-Gay Coach An online preacher who says public schools are full of “homosexuals, fornicators and defiant haters of God” was rejected by a public school in Licking County where he wanted to be head football coach. In standing up to Dave Daubenmire, whose targets include LGBT people, women and African-Americans, the school board for Lakewood High School in Hebron rejected a coach who has taken two schools to the state playoffs but has courted controversy along the way. Daubenmire was sued by the ACLU when he led locker-room prayers as coach at London High School southwest of Columbus. He was fired from his last coaching job at a Christian school. Ohio: Cincinnati attorney Al Gerhardstein, who won a case last year that forces Ohio to recognize samesex marriages on people’s death certificates, filed a suit Feb 10 to recognize people’s marriages on their children’s birth certificates. Virginia: Federal Judge Arenda Wright Allen ruled Feb 13 that Virginia must allow gay and lesbian couples to marry, but weddings were put on hold pending any appeals. Kentucky: Couples married in other states must have their unions honored by Kentucky, federal Judge John G. Heyburn II ruled Feb 12. On Valentine’s Day, two couples sued to get marriage licenses inside the state. Indiana: State lawmakers missed a deadline to place on the November ballot a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage. Right
now, Indiana’s ban is by statute. Nevada: The Human Rights Campaign, ACLU and Freedom to Marry launched a campaign for a marriage ballot measure in 2016. Congress: U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz (RTexas) and Mike Lee (R-Utah) introduced a bill that would use people’s states of residence to determine if their marriages are recognized by the federal government. Courts: New lawsuits were filed in Alabama, Louisiana, Missouri and Wisconsin. There She Is...
Miss Ohio Contestant Would Be First Lesbian Title-Holder by Erin McCalla Kara Mitchell was met with these words in the interview room at the 2011 Miss Indiana pageant: “There will never be a gay Miss Indiana or a gay Miss America.” On June 21, she’ll compete for the crown of Miss Ohio. She’s the state’s first lesbian contestant. Mitchell still isn’t sure if that Indiana interviewer said what he said to throw her off-guard or if he really meant it. But it did throw her off, even though she has been out since age 14 and has always been out in pageantry. “I told him, ‘Sonia Sotomayor is the first Latina Supreme Court justice; we have a black president. It’s the era where anything is possible,’” Mitchell said. But it was too late. She was already shaken and didn’t even place in the Top 10. As she explains, the interview is “everything.” Now she says she’s more prepared if the same question comes up at Miss Ohio. She’ll compete at the state pageant in Mansfield as Miss Northwestern Ohio. “Anything that could be said to me has been said to me. So it rolls off my back.” Originally from the Washington, D.C., area, Mitchell graduated from Ball State University in 2011 with a degree in advertising. She moved to Columbus two years ago. Last year, she made it to the Top 10 at the state pageant as Miss Cuyahoga County. This year, her eye is on the prize. It has to be; at 24, this is the last year she’s eligible to compete for the pageant’s scholarship money. Her platform, “Just Ask Me,” is geared toward LGBT acceptance, particularly young adults. Mitchell believes there still are not enough role models for LGBT youth to look up to, and she 12

wants to share her testimony as an openly gay woman. She said her platform is the most controversial that Miss Ohio as ever seen. “Pageants are Americana. It [Miss America] has transformed so much since the beginning,” Mitchell said. “The girl next door looks different now than she did then. The program needs to evolve as we evolve.” She said her fellow contestants have been accepting. “If they don’t agree with me, they don’t show it,” she said. Miss Ohio officials have been particularly supportive, Mitchell said. Contestants are placed with host families during the week of the pageant, and Mitchell was worried her hosts might not welcome a lesbian into their home. She said they assured her that wouldn’t happen. Miss Ohio will win $10,000 in scholarship money and the opportunity to compete for Miss America in Atlantic City in September. Miss America wins $50,000 for continuing education. If Mitchell wins Miss Ohio, she plans to travel around the state and country to promote positivity in the LGBT community, go to all the Pride festivals, be a guest on Anderson Cooper and Ellen and be accessible to her fans and people in LGBT community. She also wants to put that $10,000 in scholarship money toward a master’s degree in communication. The Gay Games might be a sporting competition, but the week won’t be without its more classically entertaining events.

The Gay Games launched what it calls its Raise Your Hand campaign a few months ago to find performers for the week’s events. Organizers seek dancers, singers, bands, DJs and, for the first time, comedians to perform at venues in Cleveland and Akron.

There’s always some family drama on the way to the altar.
Premo said a phrase in the 46-word amendment proposed for the Ohio Constitution opens the door for religiously affiliated hospitals to deny visitation and other rights to same-sex couples.
Ohio’s simmering feud among LGBT civilrights organizations has boiled over into public view once again. State groups and national allies that have funneled money and expertise into marriageequality campaigns across the country say they’ll not only sit out a potential fall campaign in Ohio but will oppose a measure making its way to the ballot.
FreedomOhio Executive Director Ian James said the religious exemption applies solely to churches, synagogues, mosques and other houses of worship, and it only reiterates their exisiting rights. He called Why Marriage Matters partners negative, obstructionist and outof-touch with Ohio voters.
Equality Ohio, the Human Rights Campaign, the ACLU and Freedom to Marry, now joined together as Why Marriage Matters Ohio, have been critical of the tactics, timing and transparency of FreedomOhio for almost two years.
FreedomOhio claims it already has more than the 385,000 signatures needed to put marriage equality on the statewide ballot but wants to collect 1 million names before a July 2 deadline.
But they said in February that the wording of FreedomOhio’s proposed Freedom to Marry and Religious Freedom Amendment is so problematic that they will “educate our members” by speaking out against the effort.
The exemption - “no religious institution shall be required to perform or recognize a marriage” - is a cornerstone of FreedomOhio’s pitch to voters. A December poll by the group found Ohioans split on the basic issue of marriage equality, but support rose to 56 percent and opposition dropped to 34 percent when people were told about its protection of religious liberties.
“We would have to say we can’t support it because of the problems it would pose,” said Michael Premo, manager of Why Marriage Matters Ohio, formed last fall to educate

The dispute among LGBT advocates is over the words religious institution and recognize. Premo said FreedomOhio’s proposed amendment would lead to “a whole bunch of lawsuits.” “We don’t want to pass something and then spend the next two years fighting it out in the courts,” he said. James, however, said the “religious institution” phrase is common in legislation and refers specifically to houses of worship and their affiliates whose primary purpose is to spread their faith. Hospitals, whether religiously affiliated or not, are regulated as businesses, he said. A similar exemption - for religious “associations” - is included in a non-discrimination bill that Equality Ohio has lobbied state legislators to support. “Placing a crucifix, Star of David or crescent … over a door doesn’t make a building a religious institution,” James said. “It’s about the work, not the affiliation.” According to an April 2013 report by LegiNation, a newsletter that tracks issues moving through legislatures around the country, laws

in all 16 marriage-equality and civil-union states at the time exempted clergy from performing marriage ceremonies for couples they don’t like. Nine states also exempted religious organizations from offering public facilities, goods and services for everyone’s weddings. “This trend suggests a general consensus ... that while we don’t want to force gay weddings into churches, we also don’t want churches to discriminate against homosexuals when operating as a public entity rather than a private religion,” the report said. “Even without such explicit statutory language, the current principles of American constitutional jurisprudence would probably result in similar distinctions made on a caseby-case basis.” While Why Marriage Matters will oppose the Ohio marriage-equality amendment, its state and national partners have ruled out their own ballot initiative this year, Premo said. He said the groups will propose an amendment in 2015 or 2016 if the FreedomOhio initiative fails.

According to Price, the majority of Well Groomed Male’s clientele are gay men. Although the spa caters to men, it has female clients as well and offers services for women that include cuts and coloring. Price said he also cuts hair and performs other spa services for transgender men and transgender women.

They strongly recommend, however, that you consult legal and financial professionals. • The Supreme Court’s ruling in Windsor vs. United States applies only to the federal government. It does not change discriminatory state laws that exclude same-sex couples from state-conferred marriage rights. • As a result of Windsor, the federal government now considers you married if you were joined legally in another state. LGBT Characters Vanishing From the Big Screen

No, dear gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender reader, you are not required to watch every LGBT movie ever made. But Matt Kane, who keeps his eye on Hollywood for GLAAD, says it is important to support those films that portray LGBT characters and stories in exciting and innovative ways. We’ve come a long way - or at least some of the way from the typical big-screen portrayals of mincing gay men, man-hating lesbians, voracious bisexuals and unstable trans people. And LGBT people aren’t often portrayed anymore as deserving victims of a violent come-uppance. The problem now is that LGBT characters aren’t portrayed much at all. If we really were obligated to see every LGBT movie, it’d be a lot easier to power through the list than it used to be. For years, GLAAD pushed TV networks to be more like the movies. LGBT characters and stories were few and far between on television, but they were a little easier to find at the theater and in the video store. “A significant shift has happened in the last decade,” GLAAD said in a 2013 report on the U.S. film industry. “As television has become increasingly inclusive ... the film industry is lagging behind.”

Among 2012 movies that counted as LGBT-inclusive: The Avengers, in which openly gay MSNBC anchor Thomas Roberts makes a cameo as himself, reporting an alien invasion. Worse yet: The few LGBT characters who do show up in the movies rarely represent any diversity in race, age or economic status.

“We were disheartened at just how minor we seem to factor into mainstream Hollywood cinema,” Kane said.
While GLAAD has catalogued - and praised - gay and lesbian characters whose portrayals go beyond their sexual orientation, the organization still sees too many examples of gay being played for laughs or worse. Kane cites Basic Instinct (1992) and Braveheart (1995) as two of the most egregious movies in recent decades. In the former, Sharon Stone’s bi character and her lesbian girlfriend are twisted psychopaths; in the latter, some audiences cheered when a gay character is thrown out of a window to his death. More recently, Javier Bardem’s bisexual character in the James Bond film, Skyfall, drew praise as the highest-profile LGBT role of 2012, but GLAAD said the part fell into an old cliché that shows bi characters as duplicitous. “With no well-known bisexual heroes to speak of in the Hollywood canon, characters like this remain the only impression many audience members have,” GLAAD said. Hollywood’s portrayal of transgender people, meanwhile, is “at least 20 years behind the curve,” Kane said. Even independent cinema, which usually is more willing to tell LGBT stories, rarely includes trans characters. GLAAD started in 1985 to combat homophobia-laced coverage of the AIDS crisis. One of its early victories was convincing The New York Times to begin using the word gay in 1987. Independent Spirit! Best Indie Film Weekend This 2011 film from the U.K. doesn’t sound too interesting on paper. It’s the story of Russell and Glen, two 20-somethings who meet at a gay club and spend the weekend together before Glen’s departure for the United States. Weekend’s power lies in its subtle script and in the performances from actors Tom Cullen and Chris New, who practically Break Bad with their amount of on-screen chemistry. It’s a quiet film that was met with unanimous, yet equally quiet praise for its maturity and understated depiction of gay romance.
Everyone seems to have an opinion on who should win Best Director, Best Picture, Best Actor, etc. And while the Oscars may be fabulous, they’re not nearly as gay as they seem. The Academy is notorious for snubbing films with queer themes. They might throw us a bone or two with the acting or directing awards (cough! Jared Leto for best supporting actor), but the coveted Best Picture is usually safe with a stirring period drama or a sweeping demonstration of the crappiness of war. Gay-related big-budget movies are few and far between in Hollywood, often plagued with distribution problems, uptight parental protests and the stubbornness of studios. Unless you’re intimately familiar with the “Because you watched Another Gay Movie!” section of Netflix or have taken a 200-level Film Studies class in New Queer Cinema, you might have suffered much of your life without experiencing what the genre has to offer. The following is a list of must-see films, as

Runner Up: Beginners This one earns a ton of points simply for casting Ewan McGregor, but it’s actually Christopher Plummer who steals the show (and an Oscar in 2011) for his portrayal of an exceptionally late bloomer who comes out to his son after the death of his wife. Honorable Mention: I Want Your Love (2012), Shortbus (2006), Heavenly Creatures (1994)
Runner Up: Milk Gus Van Sant’s 2008 biopic about Harvey Milk caused quite the stir (Sean Penn kissing James Franco!?), and it came out at exactly the right time, more or less coinciding with California’s contentious Proposition 8.
So Mainstream Best Blockbuster Brokeback Mountain Too obvious? So what, who cares? Brokeback (2005) broke all the rules - gay western, two huge (and straight) stars with an intense sex scene, a contemptible Anne Hathaway - and still became heralded as one of the best romance films of all time. If for some reason you haven’t seen it, it’s about two men who meet and work as sheepherders and fall into a complicated companionship that continues throughout the course of their lives. Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal deliver the best performances of their careers in this film, and yes, I HAVE seen The Dark Knight, and I stand by my statement. To this day, the fact that this movie lost the Oscar to Crash remains a sore subject.

the plot up on Wikipedia after you’ve watched it, but that shouldn’t deter you from giving it a try. It’s a visceral and nasty ride, full of deception, triple-timing schemers and plenty of shots of Gael Garcia Bernal’s lips. Runner Up: A Single Man Colin Firth brings it in this 2009 Tom Ford-directed period drama about a man who has just lost his longtime lover. What a Gas! - Best Comedy I Love You Phillip Morris This 2009 film was, unquestionably, an awkward movie to go to on a first date. Jim Carrey plays Steven Jay Russell, a conman who can’t seem to stay put in prison, especially once he’s met Ewan McGregor as the titular love of his life. It’s hilarious, highly sexual and, surprisingly, a perfect showcase for Carrey, who fully commits to his lovable scumbag role. Runner Up: The Birdcage Believe it or not, a film exists where Robin Williams has the more understated performance. While his and Nathan Lane’s antics in this 1996 classic are a scream, they’re nothing compared to Gene Hackman in drag. Honorable Mentions: Trick (1999), In & Out (1997), Best in Show (2000)

retreat where they learn stereotypical gender roles and simulate heterosexual intercourse might seem like a horror story, but in the hands of director Jamie Babbit this underappreciated 1999 gem offers an endearing and quirky lesbian romance with a sinister pink satin backdrop. The film features a young Natasha Lyonne (Orange is the New Black), an out-of-drag RuPaul and the guy who played Rufio in Hook. It’s not often you find a heartwarming story about the insidious business of conversion therapy.

Gender Benders - Best Films featuring Trans Characters Ma Vie En Rose Ma Vie En Rose, which translates to My Life in Pink, is about a young girl in France named Ludovic, who was born male and raised as a boy by her mostly loving, yet stubbornly unappreciative family. Ludo’s precocious understanding of who she is clashes with her parents’ reluctance to acknowledge her identity, out of fear of social retribution from their nasty neighbors. The 1997 film indulges in flights of fancy and magical realism this is, after all, a story about a young child - yet at no point does the poignancy of Ludo’s situation dwindle. Runner Up: Boys Don’t Cry This may be the most Justin Bieber-like Hilary Swank has ever looked, but she earned every bit of her 1999 Oscar portraying Brandon Teena in this unrelenting, violent true story. Community in Crisis Best Films About HIV/AIDS Angels in America Starring big names like Al Pacino, Meryl Streep, Emma Thompson, and Jeffrey Wright, this 2003 HBO mini-series uses fantasy and theatricality to deftly illuminate the catastrophic fear that came about at the beginning of the AIDS crisis, as well as the social hypocrisies that accompanied it. The actors tackle multiple roles, which you’d think would be distracting but actually works very well to show how ubiquitous and far-reaching HIV/AIDS became during the ’80s and ’90s. Runner Up: Jeffrey Looking for a comedy about HIV and celibacy that still has relevance in today’s dating world? I recommend Jeffrey (1995). If you’re feeling nostalgic, there’s probably a VHS copy in a thrift store somewhere. Honorable Mentions: Philadelphia (1993), Longtime Companion (1989), Love! Valour! Compassion! (1997)
What a Drag - Best Drag Film Paris is Burning Thank this groundbreaking 1990 documentary for exposing the world to words like voguing, shade, realness and countless other phrases that are now thrown about willy-nilly. The film, shot in the late ’80s at the height of the AIDS crisis, follows several groups of New York drag performers. It features a number of highly personal and poignant interviews from several key figures in the scene at the time, as well as footage of the legendary competitions that took place.
Over It - Most Overrated Films Chasing Amy Yes, it features a number of relatable and threedimensional gay characters. Yes, it has witty dialogue about relationships and sexuality. Sure, there are some rare instances where a person who identifies as gay can become romantically involved with someone of the opposite sex. And while there’s nothing too outrageous about Kevin Smith’s 1997 romantic comedy about a man who falls for his best friend who’s a lesbian, the overly self-indulgent characters are just plain annoying to watch.
Runner Up: The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert This 1994 Aussie drag-tastic classic still holds up today, including a certain infamous scene involving ping-pong balls.
Runner Up: The Kids Are All Right I guess the point of this 2010 story is that all you need to do to get a lesbian to sleep with a man is to have that man be Mark Ruffalo? This is just one uncomfortable family drama without much of a payoff. But at least it has (a lot of) Mark Ruffalo.

Everyone Has a Story to Tell by Debra Shade
LGBT filmmakers; but again, as a person who falls in this category, I would say it isn’t our biggest fight.
I thought the hardest thing about seeking investors and actors for a movie with 17 sex scenes - hetero, lesbian and gay, a foursome, fisting and fruit play - would be convincing them that it’s not porn. I didn’t think the hardest battle would be living in the Midwest, considering that Columbus can attract such sexual expressions of freedom as a show entitled, The Filthiest Fucking Thing Ever. The very same people who ridicule or judge are part of the demographic that attracts a Canadian production company to the middle of the Middle West - Columbus - for an event called Sexaplooza. If not for being in the midst of one of the most exhilarating roller coaster rides of my career, I’d probably have very little to say about African-Americans and LGBT film. However, because I’m on the up-climb of this ancient, stringent and monopolized industry roller coaster, I can personally speak on the issue. It leaves me to wonder why the Midwest wouldn’t be open to a movie called Deviant Desires, based on my book about a female sex addict. The market for such films exists. LGBT-themed movies, regardless of their level of sexual content, have been released. Pariah (2011), written and directed by Dee Rees, is a story about African-American lesbians in a light that has rarely been shown. Author Love Dixon states in her book, Same Gender Loving and Loving It!, that minorities have been raised with the belief that being gay and being black are not synonymous. This belief system could be why there are very few out and open minority 32

If only. From casting to forming a production crew, the ride for me has been bumpy and littered with opinionated “freedom” supporters who use that fine line of creative “input” to judge and categorize a movie of this content.
It would seem, of course, that the movie-making mecca would come with a much shorter climb. I am more concerned, though, that there might be a downward spiral faster than the infamous Drop Tower at Kings Island.
Are we saying that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender minorities don’t want to write films and share their stories?
Sure, the world has a few awesome LGBT films. Of course there are out and active filmmakers. But the question to pose in the African-American LGBT community is not, “Do we need another gay movie?” It’s “Do we need more gay AfricanAmerican filmmakers?”
Are we saying that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender minorities don’t want to write films and share their stories? As a person who falls in this category, believe me: That is not the case. Actors and filmmakers alike in the LGBT community seem to face hurdles that don’t exist outside the minority filmmaking industry. Are we saying that the Midwest cannot produce such films? As a resident of the Midwest, I know that is not the case. The most common thing I’m told when seeking advice on how to survive this particular rollercoaster is, “Move to California.”
There might be more opportunities, but the surroundings themselves might be harmful to one’s value systems. I don’t doubt it would be easier for most people in California, but would it be for an AfricanAmerican lesbian female?
So I stay. And the more I push the movie via a monthly event called Adult Recess and various branding techniques and book-signings around the region, I am more often met with judgment and opposition of the movie content and my sexuality. Despite the knowledge that California may be more accepting and my belief that this region is the biggest part of the fight, I also think the fight lies in the content and where you are trying to market the content. No matter how much we’re gaining toward equality, we’re losing a battle of acceptance of LGBT content in film. Whether or not they’re as borderline pornographic as Deviant Desires, more victories are needed. More minority filmmakers are needed. More acceptance is needed. Out of the Dark Movies Help Us Cope, Stir Us to Action

The therapeutic roots of theater run deep. Before Hollywood became synonymous with the motion-picture industry, before Broadway became synonymous with the theater, and even before Shakespeare penned Hamlet, the ancient Greeks hosted theatrical competitions during festivals dedicated to Dionysus, the god of fertility and revelry. Like their modern counterparts, these early tragedies, comedies and satyrs weren’t just entertaining, they were therapeutic. Aristotle argued that the function of tragedies was to help spectators release deep feelings as they empathized with the actors on stage. This, he said, leads to healing in the community. Fast-forward a few thousand years, and this therapeutic nature of plays and their more modern counterparts, movies, has stood the test of time. How? Many of us grew up believing that tears were scary. Bad things happened to those who cried. We may have heard threats like, “Stop crying or I’ll give you something to cry about!” Or, we may have felt humiliated by taunting while we cried. 34

Some of us learned to avoid expressing anger at all costs. It might have given us a short feeling of power, but bigger, angrier people did their best to shut us down. The lesson: Anger equals pain.

Beyond the power to help us heal emotionally, movies give voice to marginalized groups and bring awareness to social injustice. Movies like Making Love, Longtime Companion, Personal Best, The Crying Game and Milk humanized LGBT people and brought our lives into mainstream America’s consciousness. Movies like Brokeback Mountain, Torch Song Trilogy, Boys Don’t Cry and Philadelphia helped mainstream America see inherent wrongness of anti-GLBT violence, harassment and discrimination and made it easier for them to join our demands for change. So the next time you feel guilty about watching all those movies, give yourself a break. Theater is awesome therapy. You’re giving yourself the gift of self-care. I have so many favorites for so many reasons. Just like my former tricks, each brought something different and exciting. My first is Beautiful Thing, a coming-of-age British flick that always gets to me, and emotion rarely happens to me because my heart is slutty and barren. I can watch this one over and over and still blubber over it. If I need some comedy and some Australian wit, I pop in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. This I have been craving because of the ass hats I have been attracting lately. ABBA turd, anyone? My choice would be Kevin Smith, director of Clerks and Chasing Amy. I have been approached by his fans for photos and autographs; I respectfully decline, of course. Kevin is a fat and snarky bearded guy, as am I. But, I lick peen, and, as far as I know, Kevin does not. But he would have to act out some of the kinky adventures I got myself into. This would make me giggle profusely.
Well, most folks are leprechauns to me because of my height. But if I caught a real one, I would steal two leprechaun outfits: one for each of my Chihuahuas. (Yes, I am that queer).

If I be catchin’ me a leprechaun, I would be givin’ him a good Irish Spring scrubbin’ because you ain’t a-knowin’ how many toads and witches the wee bugger was a muddlin’ with. Then, I would be demandin’ the grantin’ of me 500 gold a day for the rest of me life. Finally, I would be enterin’ him in one of those fancy drag pageants with the name of Lucie O’ Charm. Given all of the rainbows, magic and glitter, he would be sure to win!

CATCO Producing Director Steven C. Anderson was surprised at first to learn of the gay fan base, but after some thought he said it probably has a lot to do with a similar sense of humor that’s shared between the characters and the men who cite Steel Magnolias as a favorite.
Although that’s the one queer reference in the entire script, Steel Magnolias is often regarded a gay play/film, and CATCO will present the stage play at Studio One in the Riffe Center from March 26 through April 13.
“There is a shared sensibility and chemistry in the beauty shop,” Anderson said. “They know each other’s business, give each other ‘advice,’ they know what’s best. They have these coming-of-ages that they help each other with.”
But, wait. You don’t think Steel Magnolias is gay? We did an informal survey asking members of the community to name their favorite LGBT film, and we received a surprising number of Steel Magnolia responses: “Steel Magnolias... I know, is it a gay movie? You bet,” said Jose Rodriguez. “It’s got Shirley MacLaine, Dolly Parton, Julia Roberts, Olympia Dukakis, Sally Field. It does not get any gayer than that!” “As a former Miss Bat-N-Rouge as Suzanne Sugarbaker, Miss Georgia World, Steel Magnolias is still my favorite,” said 38

For the uninitiated, the play about three generations of Louisiana women - written by gay playwright Robert Harling opened off-Broadway in 1987. Shelby and Annelle are in their 20s; Truvy and M’Lynn are middle-aged; and Ouiser and Clairee are the widowed matriarchs of the group. The story is centered on the motherdaughter relationship of M’Lynn and Shelby, and much of the play takes place in Truvy’s beauty parlor. The movie, with a screenplay adapted by Harling, was released in 1989 with an all-star cast of Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Darryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis, Shirley McClain and Dolly Parton.
author; Shelby is based on Harling’s sister, who died of complications from diabetes. It’s a play about the love for the women he grew up with. (Sorry about the spoiler, but come on: The play is over 25 years old!) While the characters spend plenty of time talking about the men in their lives, there are no on-stage roles for men. But don’t worry, because all the favorite one-liners and sassy barbs are there, including Anderson’s favorite: “There’s no such thing as natural beauty.” “The play is tighter than the movie,” he said. “I think it will be more popular.” But gay men aren’t the only demographic to love this story. The show has had many different lives, from the off-Broadway start, to the blockbuster film, to a 2005 run on Broadway, to the 2012 TV remake with an all-black cast that included Queen Latifah, Phylicia Rashad and Alfre Woodard. The story has longevity. “It hits a lot of people with its generations of women,” Anderson said. “Fans are rabid about the show.” There was even a drag queen cast in the works, but Harling put a stop to it. “He felt, as do I, that while these women are funny, they are real. They aren’t caricatures,” Anderson said.

That is one of the reasons the CATCO cast is age-appropriate. “Any actress who is anyone wanted to be in this show,” he said. “It was a hard show to cast - there were 50 women for callback.” Anderson decided upon Josie Merkle to play Clairee, Jackie Bates to fill feisty Ouiser’s shoes, Gail Griffith to play Truvy, Sarah Behrens as M’Lynn, Kelly Strand as Annelle and Andrea Schmitt as Shelby. The play is sure to make you laugh and cry at all the familiar spots, but remember what Truvy said: “I have a strict policy that nobody cries alone in my presence.” Mark, Rick and Steve better remember to bring tissues. ‘Steel Magnolias’ CATCO’s production of Steel Magnolias will run from March 26 through April 13, Wednesdays through Sundays, at Studio One in the Riffe Center.

McConaughey, Van Sant Cynthia Nixon Populates Team for ‘Sea of Trees’ ‘Stockholm, Pennsylvania’ We no longer remember Failure to Launch or Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. We happily put them out of our head when Matthew McConaughey took the wheel of his terrible career and pulled an awesome u-turn into seriously excellent work, the kind he promised everyone back in Dazed and Confused. Whether it’s on TV in HBO’s wickedly great True Detective or in good movie after good movie like Mud, Killer Joe or his now-Oscar-nominated turn in Dallas Buyers Club, the man is on fire in the best possible way. So it’s almost run-of-the-mill good news to learn that he’s taken a role in the latest Gus Van Sant drama, Sea of Trees, opposite Ken Watanabe. From a Chris Sparling (Buried) script that made the 2013 Black List, Van Sant will tell the story of an American man who goes to the notorious Suicide Forest located in the foothills of Japan’s Mount Fuji. There he meets Watanabe, who’s having second thoughts about his own planned demise, and the two begin a journey out of the forest and back to the land of the living. Maybe when he finds his way out he’ll give Kate Hudson some career rehab pointers.

Lest we forget that indie cinema is still the main destination for gut-wrenching, heartbreaking stories, here comes Stockholm, Pennsylvania. The debut directorial feature from Nikole Beckwith was adapted from the stage play and developed through the Sundance Screenwriting Lab. It sounds like it’s going to require a box of Kleenex to deal with. This kidnapping drama tells the story of a developmentally stunted young woman (Saoirse Ronan) who’s held for 20 years by her captor (Jason Isaacs) and then reunited with her birth mother (Cynthia Nixon). Her mother must struggle to nurture the daughter she’s never known, earn her trust and affection, and fight to restore her to the world of functioning human beings. In other words, here comes Nixon swinging for the bleachers, and if anyone can get us to enter this sorrowful world, it’s her. She always was the coolest member of the Sex and the City gang. Shooting this year, expect accolades for Nixon come 2015.

EM: Congratulations on your award at Sundance! What was that whole experience like?
BC: Well, Ryan and I actually met at Sundance five years ago, so it was exciting for both of us to premiere the film there. And then to win an award was something that I don’t think we have fully absorbed yet. It’s pretty exciting. EM: Is there anything you want our readers to know about the film before they see it?
RW: What is the climate on marriage in Ohio?
[I describe FreedomOhio and its effort to get marriage equality on the November ballot and the debate on whether 2014 is the right time to move forward.] RW: It sounds a lot like Prop 8 in 2008. It sounds like it would be a really interesting film for both camps to come to.

EM: How did it feel after your film was wrapped? Was there a great sense of weight lifted from you, or was it more bittersweet moment because after five years, it’s come to an end?
But ... there are still 33 states where gay marriage is illegal and that’s sort of the end of our film, and it leaves you with that. So there’s obviously more work to be done. As filmmakers, it felt like being a part of history ... but we know there is so much more history that has to be made that we won’t be filming. For, me it’s bittersweet. EM: What’s next for both of you?
BC: First and foremost, for Ryan and I, a big chunk of this year is going to be spent getting this film out there. I think one of the things that was most exciting for us, showing the film at Sundance and other festivals like Cleveland, it’s not just a film about gay marriage. It’s about standing up for your rights. A Case Against 8 will screen at Tower City Cinemas as a part of the Cleveland International Film Festival on March 21 at 6:10p and on March 22 at 4:20p. There will be a panel discussion afteward with Ben Cotner and Ryan White.

The Man Behind Marie Antoinette’s Hair Is Hidden No More

Franklin University professor Will Bashor loves all things French Revolution: the blood, the chaos, the... hair?
His book, Marie Antoinette’s Head: The Royal Hairdresser, the Queen, and the Revolution, discusses the lives and times of Marie Antoinette and a lesser known historical figure, her hairdresser. While the history books don’t talk much about Léonard Autié, Bashor has detailed the stylist’s rise in the French court and his attempt to smuggle the royal family out of France before their journey to the guillotine.
TM: All of the political machinations involved merely in the appointment of a hairdresser to court were immense. How do you think Autié learned to maneuver this political climate? WB: I truly believe Léonard slept his way to the top. He was charming, seductive and he not only opened up the ladies’ purses but the doors to their boudoirs as well. He was also a genius. His fame from dressing hair in the theatre helped propel him to the top, but he also knew that gaining the patronage of a countess and then a king’s favorite, Madame du Barry, would be necessary to enter the circle of the soon-to-arrive Princess Marie Antoinette from Austria. He was naturally talented at intrigue from the get-go.

Will Bashor: I was spending an afternoon after school at the Carnavalet Museum, a collection strong on the history of Paris and the French Revolution, when I came across a lock of Marie Antoinette’s hair. I remembered that she almost fainted at the sight of the redhooded executioner in her prison cell that cold morning, and she recoiled with horror when he asked her to turn around so he could cut her hair, necessary to ensure that the guillotine’s blade would work properly. WB: Léonard sought only fame and fortune in the beginning, but his close relationship with the queen became more important as time passed, using his personal fortune to help support the imprisoned royals. Because of the “Gay Best Friend” theme, many of my readers have asked if Léonard was gay and, although I doubt it, he did have a personal assistant called “le beau Julien” or “the handsome Julien.” Léonard had several children and was known to have mistresses, including his maid, but at that time many men did not marry for love, often tying the knot to avoid the stigma of being gay or, more damaging to one’s reputation, of being impotent.
The attitude toward homosexuality in France at this time, from my studies, seemed to be more relaxed than that in Protestant countries like England and Germany. I’m not saying that it wasn’t condemned by the Catholic Church in France, but we know that Louis XIV’s brother, the Monsieur, was openly gay.
