Bullying Bullying is the use of force, threat, coercion to abuse, intimidate, or aggressively impose domination over others. The behavior is often repeated and habitual. One essential prerequisite is the perception, by the bully or by others, of an imbalance of social or physical power. Bullying can be defined in many different ways. The UK currently has no legal definition of bullying, while some U.S. states have laws against it. Bullying consists of four basic types of abuse – emotional (sometimes called relational), verbal, physical, and cyber. It typically involves subtle methods of coercion such as intimidation.

The Avenues is being developed in four phases. The first phase has 125,727.500m2 (1.8 million square feet) of gross leasable area, equivalent to 25 football pitches. The Avenues second phase, launched early 2008, adds another 50,015.000 m2 (600,000 square feet) of leisure and retail space making The Avenues one of the largest malls in the GCC. World famous anchor stores and leading brands from across Europe, the United States, Asia and Africa have already made a home at The Avenues. The tenants in its first phase include the largest IKEA in the region, the first Carrefour hypermarket in Kuwait and a 10 screen Cineplex. International high fashion and luxury brands have joined them, such as Debenhams, Gap, Banana Republic, Bershka, H&M and Zara. By the time The Avenues is complete it will be a haven of more than 100 restaurants and cafes. The Avenues mall’s design is the brainchild of NORR Consultants International, the architects responsible for some of the most distinctive buildings in the Middle East and around the world such as the emirates towers. THE MALL EVOLUTION The Avenues Phase III when opened in 2012 will be redefining retail as we know it. Inspired by the great cities of the world, this new phase is comprised of 6 districts, each with their own unique character, collectively creating a vibrant and varied customer experiences. Districts will include the Luxury Mall, The Grand Avenue, The Mall, SoKu and the Souk. Phase III Total gross area is 458,745 and 85,000 square meters of retail area, 545 total retail units, 52 food and beverage outlets and 2 anchors.

Surprising the many, talking to the elite, the remaining phase 3 of The Avenues project redefines the lifestyle experience in Kuwait and introduces a unique and exclusive shopping dimension broadening the mall concept to include a city one, expanding by such one’s world into a palette of choices and altitudes to live in and choose from. Futuristic vision or a step back in time and history, traditional souks or modern architecture, alleys of nature or avenues of freedom, trendy elegance or classical distinction, style melts with spaces and smells luxury across a mall boutique paying tribute to opulence and exclusivity, a series of breath taking souks breathing tradition and heritage all in a soothing environment creating a vision of a city of leisure and relaxation designed to suit exclusive expectations. The Avenues phase IV will be the final part of the malls expansion which will see the potential addition of the spa, restaurants, an entertainment center, along with impressive water features, a state of the art business center, two hotels, offices, convention center and a theater.

To begin with, internal recruitment, as stated above, saves a lot of time and money, as the top level management do not have to go through the staffing process of estimating manpower requirements, recruiting externally, selecting, and so on. Through internal recruitment, it requires no introduction for the already existing employee, as he is already familiar with the organization’s rules and regulations, and knows what he has to do. On the other hand, internal recruitment may cause lethargy among employees, as they know that they’re entitled to time-bound promotions. It also reduces the scope for fresh talent coming into the firm. What must we do to prevent a trend that has so negatively been spread in Kuwait? The trend of smoking in public.

Smoking around citizens in public areas has been such a common observation, nowadays. Young teenage and adults try it in malls, alongside babies, restaurants, etc. It has become a problem, minded by most non-smokers, and families. The ignorance of government’s signs outside areas has been extremely high, and on addition to that, no government action has been taken.

Government objectives of most nations is to adapt social responsibility and keep the public safe, but considering the ignorance of public smokers and the government itself, just puts this objective as water under the bridge. Cigarette smoking must be restricted from family areas, so as to avoid any sort of disturbance and medical problems to any portion of the population. Moreover, there are many situations, where drivers toss alreadylit cigarettes outside their vehicle, and this is considered highly dangerous and can lead to catastrophic events to transpire. There must be serious action taken, by the government of Kuwait, to make our society better than it is, and discourage teenage smokers and on top of that, smoking in public areas, to make this place better for the generations to come.

It is the Belief that does not rest on logical proof or material evidence. It is simply, the confident conviction in the truth. Faith is an aspect every human on the face of this earth carries. It is just inactive in some, as they do not know how and when to use it. Faith is the key to all other positive traits, such as optimism, determination, confidence and so, it carries on.

Faith is what builds up life, and takes it beyond the skies, it is something we all must use in our daily lives. We wouldn’t need therapists, or rigorous advice from friends and family, all the time, if we just had a little faith in our actions, our goals, our world would be a world of a diversified nature. A positive impact of faith may be carried across this world at a widespread and we’d be on top, tasting the apple of Eden, within us, known as faith. Just this time, with fruitfulness. Nothing relative to the ‘Adam and Eve’ story. Faith can be in many things. The faith in God, may be said as the most important kind. The faith in yourself would the second-most humane. The faith in your work, your family, efforts, friends, partners, life goals, role models and goes down to the little things that makes us happy. If only people realized the power of faith, they would realize life, because life isn’t up and standing, without the faith of God, who had created it and us, in the first place.

Fruits were the first food items ever consumed by the human species. But as the years have passed and the human civilization has progressed, a misconception has risen and it still persists. The misconception is that fruit juices can substitute fresh fruits. Fruits are completely organic while juices contain additional sugar, color and preservatives. It is always better to grab and eat a fruit rather than sipping it in juice form.

The calorie content Fruits naturally contain some amount of sugar but when juices are made, more sugar is added to make it sweeter and palatable. Since the sweetness increases, the content of sucrose, fructose and glucose also increases. All these give rise to the number of calories contained in a carton of juice. For example, 8 oz of orange juice contains 2.5 times the sugar that a piece of orange contains. How can something with high calories be recommended for good health?

Fresh fruits serve better health purposes Fruit juices lose all the essential nutrients in their transformation process from a fruit to its juice. Basically, the major amongst all flaws is the level of sugar, which is much higher in the juices compared to the whole fruits. Juices amplify the blood sugar level more rapidly than fruits. Also, due to the loss of nutrients, the juices do not help much to metabolize and thus their digestion too takes more time than the fruits. The fiber content When the whole fruit is converted into fruit juice, it loses a lot on the fiber content. A lot of pulp is wasted in this conversion process. This pulp includes fiber, various nutrients and skin of the fruit, which are very beneficial for you health-wise. An apple contains 3.3 grams of dietary fiber while apple juice contains only 0.3 grams of dietary fiber.

• Tell us about yourself and your professional background I am originally from the South of England near Windsor; I am a third generation chef and foodie. I have always been around kitchens and restaurants. My father was a chef for the Queen of England when I was a young boy and I used to spend my weekends playing in Windsor castle. I have two boys and a daughter, my oldest son is 7 and he loves to cook too. I studied at Thames Valley University in London and have a HND and BSc in Hotel Catering and International Hospitality Management; I also have a Master in Food Manufacturing. I have worked and developed restaurants in the UK, Ireland, Netherlands and Spain before arriving in Kuwait. I have been here for almost 10 years, I worked with Al Homaizi when I first arrived to design, build and manage the first British Retail Consortium Grade A accredited manufacturing facility in the GCC. Later I worked on the development of the Café Bazza, and for the last twelve months I have been working with AKT group to develop a new concept Society as well as expanding the Café Supreme property portfolio. • What is the story behind society? Café Supreme (a Canadian bistro brand) has now been operating in Kuwait for 10 years and we felt it was time to evolve the brand. Essentially Society is the evolution of Supreme that takes into consideration the changes in the market and its needs over the last decade. Namely the need for a more trendy, hip whilst relaxing and homely environment, we have maintained the western content of the menu and offer but moved more towards a European influenced menu. You will find that there are more traditional British dishes then have ever been brought together on a menu in Kuwait before. This isn’t because I am English, it’s because we believe the market is ready to receive such dishes, not just for the expatriates but for the Kuwaiti Nationals, as most of our customers (80% in fact) are locals. • What’s your favorite mall? I’m a guy, and as most men will tell you they hate shopping, in this regard I’m no different, but I would have to say my favorite since it opened is the 360°, I find everything that I want, it is easy to reach, easy to park, the layout is great (literally walking around in a circle) and it has a selection of very good quality eateries. 140

• What makes Society stand out from the rest of the cafes? Definitely the ambience and menu, there are some really well designed restaurants in the ME but we have opted for a relaxed quality over technical design and execution, something my wife likes to refer to as “Casual Luxury”. The introduction of our Menu-zine (the menu is presented as a magazine) is for sure original. The idea that we have a fully illustrated menu accompanied by interesting factual articles about food, dining its origins and history engages our customers. The fact that customers can take the Menu-zine away as a personal copy is also unique and is designed to keep the customer engaged in our concept even after leaving the restaurant. • Where do you see Society 5 years from now? We already have 2 more locations planned for later this year in Kuwait and we are keen to set up in other GCC countries either as master franchisor or owner operator. I think our next stop is going to be Dubai I’m looking at locations in JLT and JBR. • What’s your favorite Fashion Brand? Al Kout Fahaheel Waterfront is a B.O.T (Build, Operate and Transfer) project, owned and developed through a partnership between the Ministry of Finance and Tamdeen Real Estate Company. It is a new landmark for Kuwait, targeting sensitive seafront development inclusive of public beaches, a modern fishermen›s harbor, a leisure-crafts harbor, the traditional (fish, meat, chicken and vegetable) markets and retail shops and cafes offering holistic family entertainment. The project compliments existingactivities in the Fahaheel commercial center and forms an integral part of the Fahaheel master plan. The ultimate beneficiaries are the local residents of Fahaheel, the broader Ahmadi Governorate and the State of Kuwait in general. The design of this project is environmentally and culturally sensitive as well as economically savy. 174

Environmentally, it has conserved the Arabian beachfront, offered new recreational facilities and enhanced the developed portion with sensitive landscaping. It has maintained and strengthened vistas to the sea from the coastal line of Arabian Gulf Road connecting major streets. Al Kout Fahaheel Waterfront Development emerges from the land as an organic complex and consists of three major components: 1. Twin Piers - North and South flank the awesome Al-Kout dancing fountains and inner harbor offering in excess of 185,139 square feet of rentable retail space. The South Pier hosts traditional markets for fish, meat and vegetables, while the North Pier is the recreation/entertainment shopping center containing a wide range of shopping outlets, range of various food cuisines and the Cineplex. The spectacular musical dancing fountains with the outdoor terraces, sidewalk cafes and promenades offer opportunities for warmth and relaxation on an otherwise tiring or routinely monotonous everyday life. 2. Two fishing harbors complete with protected moorings, slips and servicing for fishing boats and the Fishermen’s Club and marina for recreational boats. 3. Beach Front/Promenade boasts of passive and active recreation areas with the beach extending a whole 1.6 kilometer frontage to the sea including sandy white beach shore combined with facilities like basketball courts, vendors, prayer halls for men and women, showers, washroom facility and car parking areas designed for convenient and easy use without disturbing the normal man›s sea view. Landscaping for the whole site is done with an intention to beautify and educate, employing the principles of Xeriscape design, which is sensitive to the harsh local environment yet aesthetically pleasing through the choice of native, water conserving plants. The design of Al Kout integrates contemporary retail architecture with Kuwait’s traditional markets and interaction between indoor and outdoor activities. Its image is inspired by traditional architecture, such as arcades, screens, pergolas, domes and massive walls. The palette of natural sand and mud colored walls enhanced by cooling blues, unifies the complex and reflects the cultural and natural heritage of the region. Al Kout is one of the several components of Madinat Al Fahaheel, a mixed-use project built around the traditional Fahaheel fishing harbor. It includes the Al Manshar Complex comprising of a shopping center, offices, residential apartments with parking facilities and a modern five star hotel (Al Manshar Rotana).

Ingredients 4 large potatoes 1 bunch green cilantro (or ½ cup dried cilantro leaves) 5-8 large fresh garlic cloves, crushed 1 lemon, juiced 3 table spoons of olive oil A dash of salt

Instructions Slice the potatoes into small cubes of about ¾ inch with a thickness of about ½ inch. Fry them in oil until they are golden/crispy (or alternatively bake them in the oven until they’re crispy). Salt them lightly. Meanwhile rinse the cilantro leaves then discard the stems, and chop the leaves very finely. Lay the leaves on a paper towel for a few minutes to dry the water from them. In a deep frying pan, add the crushed garlic then sauté it on medium heat in the 3 tablespoons of olive oil just for a couple of minutes. You want the garlic to stay a bit raw, not fully cooked, or otherwise if you overcook the garlic it looses its flavor. Add a tiny pinch of salt, then add the chopped cilantro and the lemon juice to the garlic and sauté/ mix them well for a minute or two. Finally add the fried potatoes to the pot mix it well with the sauté and cook it for 3-5 more minutes while stirring and you’re done. BONUS: If you love spicy food, finely chop a bit of green jalapeno or Serrano peppers and add them during the cilantro sauté Serve hot or cold as an appetizer.

High Cholesterol Foods Having high blood cholesterol is a serious condition that needs to be managed before it develops into full-blown heart disease. What’s the big deal with cholesterol and why is it necessary to keep it at manageable levels? Cholesterol, mostly found in the brain and spinal tissue, is actually a waxy, fat-like substance that is necessary for hormone synthesis and cell membrane formation.

The two kinds of cholesterol found in the blood are LDL or low-density lipoprotein and HDL or high-density lipoprotein. LDLs act as a means of transport, bringing cholesterol and triglycerides into the cell. They are referred to as “bad cholesterol” because they tend to get deposited in the arterial walls, causing it to harden and get clogged over time. HDLs, meanwhile, serve to transport cholesterol away from the tissue and cells of the arteries to the liver for excretion. Because of this protective action, they are known as “good cholesterol.”

When the cholesterol levels are high, a person’s chances of developing hypertension, heart disease and atherosclerosis are also increased. Thus, it is important to keep cholesterol at manageable levels so that the body can remain healthy. There are two sources of cholesterol: the liver which is the site of fat synthesis and the foods we eat. To keep our heart healthy or prevent cardiac problems from getting worse, there are high cholesterol foods that must be avoided. Foods that are high in trans fatty acids and saturated fats raise the blood cholesterol levels. These foods increase the levels of “bad cholesterol” and lower the “good cholesterol.” Processed foods, especially pre-packaged baked goodies and candies are very high in trans fat content. French fries, burgers and other fried foods bought

in restaurants are also high cholesterol foods since trans fats oils or semi-solidified oils are used in frying these items. Unless you are sure of the ingredients used in the food you order-- from the preparation to the cooking-- then you need to be wary about anything you eat that you haven’t cooked yourself. Saturated fats, meanwhile, are found in such items as the fatty portions of red meat, skin on chicken and other poultry animals, and full fat dairy products. Products derived from animal meat such as cheese and ice cream are also guilty of increasing cholesterol levels in the blood. This does not mean, however, that all fats are bad for you. Monounsaturated fatty acids or MUFAs and polyunsaturated fats are actually beneficial since they improve good cholesterol levels. This can be taken from olive oil, avocado and almond oils just to name a few. Virgin coconut oil also has medium chain fatty acids that have a variety of benefits. It aids in weight loss, protects the immune system and even keeps the heart healthy. Polyunsaturated fats such as those which can be gleaned from fish are also full of omega-3 that helps lower cholesterol levels and keeps the cardiovascular system functioning smoothly. Finally, if you are consuming too much sugar-- whether it be cane, brown or corn syrup-it’s about time to go slow. Research has shown that refined carbohydrates cause a rise in cholesterol levels that heighten your risk for heart disease. Because these sugars are easily absorbed by the body, they lead to increased appetite which can lead one to overeat and gain weight. Reduce your intake of these high cholesterol foods by replacing your white breads and pasta with whole grain versions of these foods. Ditch the candy and pastries and snack on fruits and vegetables instead.
