For three decades Outfest has led the charge, ensuring that stories of LGBT people are created, shared and protected - stories that depict the rich diversity of who we are as individuals, families and communities - stories that educate, entertain and inspire!

ESSENTIALS

Outfest grew out of a need for lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people to see ourselves reflected on screen. Since 1982 we have shown over 5,600 hundred films to audiences of a million people, but the ripple effect of our work is even larger. Films that have been developed in our labs, restored by the Legacy Project and picked up for distribution from our festivals have screened around the world, contributing to the movement for acceptance and equality of all LGBT people. We are proud to celebrate 30 years of remarkable history, as we look toward the future and lay the groundwork for the next 30! We are expanding our reach by focusing on mentorship and education, and through our strategic partnership with NewFest in New York, beginning the process of becoming a national organization. This anniversary is a testament to the dedication of volunteers, filmmakers, members and audiences that have been participating in Outfest for 30 years! You are the heart of Outfest. 30 YEARS OF OUTFEST: THE FILMS THAT SPARKED A CULTURAL REVOLUTION Special support provided by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. This series of seminal LGBT films from the 1960s to the 2000s includes a re-creation of the first festival in 1982: MAKING LOVE (Hill, 1982), QUEEN OF SHEBA MEETS THE ATOM MAN (Rice, 1963-4) and TAXI ZUM KLO (Ripploh, 1981).

Outfest was founded by five graduate students on the UCLA campus in 1982. Larry Horne (who would become Outfest’s first Director), Claire Aguilar, Don Diers, Chris Berry and John Ramirez approached Robert Rosen (then Director of the Film & Television Archive) and programmer Geoff Gilmore to initiate an LGBT gay media conference and film festival That first festival consisted of just three films. The next year it expanded to ten days with 30 films and seven lively panel discussions. The festival continued to grow, eventually moving off the UCLA campus. In 1988, Outfest found its current home at the Directors Guild of America. Over the next two decades Outfest inaugurated a slate of programs that were the first of their kind in the world: Outfest Wednesdays, a weekly lesbian and gay screening series, The Outfest Screenwriting Lab, Fusion: The Los Angeles LGBT People of Color Film Festival, and the Outfest Legacy Project for LGBT Film Preservation, a partnership with the UCLA Film & Television Archive. Most recently we launched OutSet: The Young Filmmakers Project from LifeWorks and Outfest, as well as a partnership with NewFest in New York City. For 30 years Outfest has ensured that life-changing stories of LGBT people are created, shared and protected – and will continue this work for the next 30 years!

MAKING LOVE

At a time when a newly politicized gay and lesbian community was critical of Hollywood for both its representations of homosexuality and the dearth of overall representation, screenwriter Barry Sandler and director Arthur Hiller (LOVE STORY) made history by giving melodrama a modern twist. This story of an unhappy marriage focuses on a husband (Michael Ontkean) whose secret desires remain hidden from his wife (Kate Jackson) until he meets a swinging novelist (Harry Hamlin). Thirty years later, MAKING LOVE remains one of the best written, most affecting gay dramas of all time. Boasting an exceptionally well-drawn female character within a gay male love story as well as handsome production values and a stellar cast, the film has only improved with age. TAXI ZUM KLO (TAXI TO THE TOILET) This sexually explicit international hit was hailed as “the first masterpiece of modern gay life” by New York’s Village Voice upon its release in 1981. Telling the story of a schoolteacher in West Berlin who spends his offhours having sex in public restrooms and parks and cruising every guy who crosses his path - without the help of Grindr. QUEEN OF SHEBA MEETS THE ATOM MAN If you want to get a sense of the freedom, the energy and the queerness of New York’s underground cinema scene in the early 1960s, this film is the perfect place to start. Early Andy Warhol favorite Taylor Mead plays the titular Atom Man, a drug-taking anti-hero romping around the city and camping it up as no one else could. Unseen until Mead helped restore and complete it in 1982, this is a moving, silly and very special film.

We’ll get our movies when we make them.” - Vito Russo On Outfest’s 30th Anniversary there is no more fitting Opening Night film than Jeffrey Schwarz’s stirring and poignant portrait of activist and film historian Vito Russo. Russo was a 24-year-old film student who experienced the Stonewall uprising and, as a result, saw the need to define queer identity and culture. His landmark book The Celluloid Closet explored the way Hollywood movies portrayed queer characters and shaped not only our perception of our own lives but also the world’s perception of us. VITO is one man’s story of fighting passionately for equality, but at its core, it is the story of a movement. It follows Russo’s dramatic journey through the early days of Gay Liberation Front marches with Bette Midler to the founding of ACT UP and GLAAD to his own devastating battle with AIDS. The film beautifully weaves significant archival material and heartwarming interviews with Russo’s family and friends including Armistead Maupin, Lily Tomlin, Bruce Vilanch and Larry Kramer. Schwarz’s powerful documentary, executive produced by Bryan Singer for HBO Films, is an intimate and inspiring testament to one of our movement’s true heroes. Jeffrey Schwarz was born in New York and is a graduate of the SUNY Purchase Film Department. He is President and CEO of Automat Pictures, a Los Angeles-based entertainment company specializing in the production of studio electronic press kits, DVD content, original TV programming, and feature films. He is the director of SPINE TINGLER! THE WILLIAM CASTLE STORY (2007) and WRANGLER: ANATOMY OF AN ICON (2008).

THE 16TH ANNUAL OUTFEST ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: JOHN WATERS While most widely known as the infamous “Pope of Trash,” John Waters is a filmmaker, visual artist, author, comedian, essayist and all-around aesthete. He bridges film history between the underground efforts of Kenneth Anger and the Kuchar Brothers and contemporary Hollywood’s acceptance of queer subject matter and outrageous gross-out humor. And yes, he’s the guy who got Divine to eat dog poop. Waters’ third feature, PINK FLAMINGOS, put the director on the map as a satirist and provocateur of the highest (though some would argue “lowest”) order, and made a superstar of Waters’ original muse, Divine, the Amazonian drag creation of the director’s childhood friend Harris Glenn Milstead. After similarly outrageous comedies like FEMALE TROUBLE, DESPERATE LIVING (p.29) and POLYESTER, Waters made perhaps his most shocking move as an artist, writing and directing the PG-rated period comedy HAIRSPRAY, which would spawn Broadway and Hollywood musical versions. Both Waters and his work have been unapologetically queer, championing outsider values and personal expression in a world that rarely appreciates difference. Ira Sachs is a writer and director based in New York City. His films include MARRIED LIFE (2007), THE DELTA (1997) and the 2005 Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize-winning FORTY SHADES OF BLUE. Sachs teaches in the Graduate Film department at NYU and is a fellow at both the MacDowell Colony and Yaddo. David France’s debut feature, which premiered at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, feels as stirring and urgent as the Occupy protests, proving anew that when concerned citizens take to the streets, they can change the world. In the early years of the AIDS pandemic, HIV-positive activists - literally fighting for their lives - took on Washington and Big Pharma by forming ACT UP (The AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) and TAG (Treatment Action Group). Combining theatrical protests with self-taught scientific training, these heroic groups both gave a sense of purpose to the dying and shook up the medical and governmental bureaucracies.

Studious, sweet-natured 15-year-old Yolanda feels the pressure to succeed under the eyes of her hard-working immigrant parents. When she meets her new neighbor, the feisty and alluring, BMX-riding Mari, Yolanda’s humdrum high school routine gets a jolt. The two girls don’t have much in common on the surface, but they become fast friends and their deep bond develops into a tension that neither one expected nor quite knows how to handle.

The atmospheric beauty and authenticity of Guerrero’s vision is deeply rooted in the cityscapes and community of Huntington Park, while skilled lead performances by Fenessa Pineda and Venecia Troncoso embody the awkwardness and cautious desire of two teenage girls experiencing love and desire for the first time. Aurora Guerrero’s short films include PURA LENGUA and VIERNES GIRL. In 2005 she was selected as a Sundance Institute/Ford Foundation film fellow and participated in the Native Lab Fellowship with her MOSQUITA Y MARI script. The project was also part of Tribeca All Access and the Film Independent Producers Lab, and most recently, MOSQUITA Y MARI was awarded the 2011 SFFS/KRF Filmmaking Grant and an LG Cinema 3D Fellowship, and Guerrero was named a Time Warner Fellow.

David France is an award-winning journalist and New York Times best-selling author who has been writing about AIDS since 1982, beginning in gay-community papers. Today he is one of the best-known chroniclers of the epidemic, with coverage in the New York Times, Newsweek, GQ and New York magazine. He is the recipient of the National Headliner Award and the GLAAD Media Award. He is at work on a major history of AIDS, due from Alfred A. Knopf in 2013.

Colfer plays Carson Phillips, a high school senior with big dreams of escaping the mediocrity of his small town. At school, Carson’s routinely stifled by jerky jocks, drama club gays, a mean-girl cheerleader (Sarah Hyland, “Modern Family”), a goth chick (Ashley Rickards, “Awkward”), and a clueless college advisor (Angela Kinsey, “The Office”). Brian Dannelly co-wrote and directed the cult hit SAVED! in 2004 (which later premiered as a musical at the Playwrights Horizons in New York in 2008). Shortly after, Dannelly was the creative producer for the first season of “Weeds”, where he also directed several episodes (including the pilot). SHE MALE SNAILS tells the story of a “Boy Hag” who finds himself caught between two genders and creates a third in order to survive. Initially a documentary about transgender artist-writer Eli Leven, SHE MALE SNAILS evolved over time into a gorgeous poetic fantasy with a hybrid structure and echoes of Derek Jarman. At the 2012 Gothenburg Film Festival, the film won the Nordic Vision prize for its provocative visual style as well as the Audience Award.

This exuberant documentary tells the story of Wildness, one of the most unique, electrifying and important queer parties in Los Angeles nightlife history. The film presents the creativity and conflict that arose when a group of queer avant-garde artists of color intersected with a community of transgender immigrant women at historic bar The Silver Platter in MacArthur Park. The party, begun in 2008 by performance artist Wu Tsang and DJs NGUZUNGUZU and Total Freedom, drew a mixed crowd of hipsters, artists and the bar’s predominantly Latino and trans clientele, who came to dance and watch artists like Flawless Mother Sabrina, Dynasty Handbag, Ariel Prodigy, Ron Athey and others perform. Tsang succeeds in addressing issues of immigration, gentrification, identification, community, and the history of the bar and its regulars in an authentic voice that creates a film as complex as life itself. Whether you’re a regular who longs to return to the Wildness days or never witnessed the enchantment firsthand, you’ll no doubt relish the intoxicating party footage and the film’s creative twists on the standard documentary format. No one’s got more street cred than Ann Magnuson. She’s a cult rock star (Bongwater), was ravished by David Bowie in THE HUNGER, seduced River Phoenix in A NIGHT IN THE LIFE OF JIMMY REARDON, cracked wise with Madonna in DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN and defined the New York 1980s underground scene with her work as a performance artist, musician and actress. In a special live glam rock performance preceding the documentary JOBRIATH A.D., Magnuson pays tribute to David Bowie and Jobriath, the first openly gay glam rocker. The world wasn’t ready for Jobriath’s fierce flamboyance in 1973, and he became a footnote in rock history until Magnuson first performed The Jobriath Medley in 1996. Not many were publicly celebrating him then besides Magnuson and Morrissey (a longtime fan who oversaw his CD re-release in 2004). Magnuson has been performing in theaters, museums, on the big and little screens, and in a gadzillion cabaret spaces around the world since then and her performance promises to drench you in glam rock fairy dust. LEGACY PROJECT

OUTFEST

Outfest Legacy Project for LGBT Film Preservation is a partnership with the venerable UCLA Film & Television Archive and is the only dedicated LGBT film archive and restoration program in the world. We have rescued and restored 16 films and collected over 18,000 irreplaceable films that reflect our lives and struggles for understanding.

The Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Film Festival is an 11-day event showcasing over 160 films from around the world in amazing venues across LA. Our festival brings together a diverse LGBT audience for an enriching community experience, providing a platform for voices that might otherwise not be heard.
