TABLE OF CONTENTS

Outfest is a community. We are home to filmmakers and film-lovers. We are a cultural destination that reaches from Los Angeles to New York City – and beyond. But most importantly, Outfest is a representation of our humanity and our human rights. Through artistic expression and through the prism of cinema, Outfest continues to be a leader in LGBT rights. We are creating change, one story at a time. The 2014 Outfest Los Angeles LGBT Film Festival reaffirms our mission and celebrates the creativity and power of storytelling. Our Gala screenings represent some of the most acclaimed and thematically diverse films of the year. From our Opening Night film —Susanna Fogel’s LIFE PARTNERS, starring Leighton Meester, Adam Brody, and Gabourey Sidibe — to the Sundance award-winner and delicately emotional LILTING by Hong Khaou to the deliciously irreverent and out of this world (literally!) comedy SPACE STATION 76 starring Matt Bomer, Patrick Wilson and Liv Tyler, this year’s line-up is a clear indication that LGBT cinema is truly thriving. Our 2014 festival shines a spotlight on Provocateurs, where we pay tribute to the artists and activists who refuse to play by the rules, with screenings showcasing Pat Rocco, Bruce LaBruce, and Susan Sontag, to name but a few! Our Docs @ 5 series highlights five extraordinary documentaries that delve deep into the human spirit and the Platinum section features a stimulating mix of boundarypushing video, performance, and multi-media works. In addition our Special Events include a free Family Fun day, an inside look at the new series “Transparent,” and a 25th anniversary screening of the groundbreaking and powerful LONGTIME COMPANION. I am so proud of our organization and of our festival this year. And you should be too! We couldn’t do this without your support and belief in the power of storytelling. A huge thank you to all the staff, volunteers, filmmakers, members, sponsors, and film lovers who are the collective beating heart of this operation. Each of you are a part of our community; each of you are affecting change through the choice you have made in supporting Outfest and our mission. Thank you. And if you can’t get enough of Outfest Los Angeles this summer, join us for our year-round programs. July 24-29 we once again partner with NewFest and the Film Society of Lincoln Center to bring New York City an incredible LGBT film festival. In Los Angeles, we continue to host the Outfest West Hollywood Series, the Outfest UCLA Legacy Project Series, and special screenings just for our members. I am beyond thrilled to be celebrating with you this year’s eclectic and inspiring Outfest Los Angeles! See you there.

LIFE PARTNERS

OPENING NIGHT GALA

Dir: Susanna Fogel, Scr: Susanna Fogel, Joni Lefkowitz, 2014, USA, 95 min.

The longest relationship that best pals Sasha (Leighton Meester, “Gossip Girl”) and Paige (Gillian Jacobs, “Community”) have ever managed to maintain is with each other. Rapidly approaching their 29th birthdays, the two decide they can’t spend the rest of their lives watching “America’s Next Top Model” with each other on the couch, so they brave the world of internet dating. While lesbian Sasha fends off the advances of unhinged reality-TV vet Trace (Kate McKinnon, “Saturday Night Live”), Paige hooks up with nerdy Tim (Adam Brody, “The O.C.,” DAMSELS IN DISTRESS), who seems like he might be her Mr. Right. Can this friendship be saved? With a hilarious supporting cast including Gabourey Sidibe, Abby Elliott, and Julie White, this riotous look at love and courtship in L.A. reminds us that, gay or straight, we’re all in the same leaky love boat together!

Susanna Fogel began writing and directing short films as a teenager. Her first, FOR REAL, premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 1995 and was subsequently shown at the Berlin Film Festival in 1996. She returned to Toronto in 1997 with her second short film, WORDS OF WISDOM. Fogel and her writing partner, Joni Lefkowitz, have co-written several projects for film and television. Among them: the short HBO pilot THE WASHINGTONIENNE, which they executive produced alongside Sarah Jessica Parker, and an adaptation of LITTLE DARLINGS for J.J. Abrams and Paramount that is currently in development. Alongside their writing pursuits, Susanna also directed their original web series for Warner Brothers, JONI AND SUSANNA, in which the two co-starred.

DOCUMENTARY CENTERPIECE INTERNATIONAL CENTERPIECE SUNDAY | July 13 | 6:00pm | REDCAT

MY PRAIRIE HOME

THE WAY HE LOOKS

With only a guitar and a handful of cash for Greyhound fare, transgender singer-songwriter Rae Spoon, who prefers the gender-neutral pronoun “they,” performs across the vast and blue-skied plains of Canada, in dingy bars and badly lit concert halls. Together with filmmaker Chelsea McMullan, Rae’s songs transport audiences from small, confining nightclubs into dreamy, beautifully photographed landscapes of music and memory. MY PRAIRIE HOME disposes of traditional documentary filmmaking, opting instead to explore Rae’s discovery of love outside their evangelical home with haunting visuals and a hypnotic score that go hand-in-hand with Rae’s highly personal melodies. Within the first moments of this Sundance Film Festival favorite, we’re visually cued to subvert our expectations and spend intimate time with a subject who sees the world in their own way. A particular joy comes from delving into an artist’s world of quiet musings; discovering Rae Spoon is this film’s biggest reward.

Set to the bouncy beats of Belle and Sebastian, this euphoric, sun-kissed coming-of-age fable – a sensation at the 2014 Berlin Film Festival, where it swept the Teddy Award and FIPRESCI prize – dances entirely to its own tune. Stuck fending off bullies and over-protective parents, Leonardo spends his days allowing his best friend Giovana to drag him around town. Being blind has always been an inconvenience for Leonardo, but his angsty adolescence gets a lift when the handsome and smooth-talking Gabriel turns down numerous offers from ogling girls to hang with Leonardo after school. The longer they spend together, the more apparent their shared attraction becomes – not just to them but to a spurned Giovana as well. As social pressure mounts on both to fit within their confined social boxes, the two must decide whether to ignore their feelings or to throw caution to the wind and admit that they might actually be falling in love.

LILTING

Dir/Scr: Hong Khaou, 2013, UK, English, Mandarin with English subtitles 86 min.

The sudden death of Kai, a young London man, leaves his Chinese Cambodian mother Junn (Pei-pei Cheng, CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON) and his boyfriend Richard (Ben Whishaw, SKYFALL) profoundly grieving. Feeling a strong sense of responsibility for Kai’s only family member, Richard reaches out to her. Though Junn speaks little English, her dislike of Richard is plain, and she responds with stony resistance. Since they share no common language, Richard hires a translator to facilitate communication, and the two improbable relatives attempt to reach across a chasm of misunderstanding through their memories of Kai. Writer-director Hong Khaou’s moving and intimate debut dances between the real and imaginary to express the unspeakable loss that both characters experience. Boasting delicate performances by both Whishaw and Cheng, this Sundance award-winner is a perceptive meditation on the connection between two human souls, revealing that what separates us can also bind us together. CENTERPIECE POST-SCREENING RECEPTION: DGA Atrium AFTER-PARTY: Eleven Nightclub

Iranian American filmmaker Desiree Akhavan is the co-creator and star of the award-winning web series THE SLOPE, a comedy that follows a pair of superficial homophobic lesbians in love. She was recently featured as one of Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Film and is currently in production on an animated series for former MTV CEO Judy McGrath’s new site, Astronauts Wanted, called THE ORIGIN OF SHAME. Her first feature, APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR, premiered at Sundance Film Festival 2014. Akhavan will join the cast of “Girls” in their upcoming season.

Hong Khaou participated in various writers’ attachment programs and has written and directed two short films, SUMMER and SPRING. SPRING had its World Premiere at the Sundance Film Festival and European Premiere at the Berlin Film Festival. SUMMER premiered at the Berlin Film Festival. His debut feature, LILTING was produced through Film London’s Microwave scheme. In 2013, Hong Khaou was named as one of the Stars of Tomorrow in Screen International.

CENTERPIECE SCREENINGS

After a toxic breakup with her girlfriend Maxine (Rebecca Henderson), Shirin (Desiree Akhavan) desperately throws herself into the Brooklyn dating scene in hopes of finding a man or woman able to bury her resentments. But with each bust of a date, she’s forced to confront a host of real-world issues she previously ignored, including masking her bisexuality from her Iranian parents. Known for her deadpan satire, writer-director-actress Desiree Akhavan single-handedly raises the bar for queer comedies with her rueful and uproariously clever APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR. Akhavan’s playful portrayal of Shirin is the film’s revelation: a woman caught between self-doubt and self-possession, trapped in a web of family mores and societal expectations with all their accompanying – and often hilarious – complexities. Comparisons to ANNIE HALL and “Girls” are well deserved, but this foul-mouthed Sundance gem stands confidently in a class of its own.

SPACE STATION 76

Dir: Jack Plotnick, Scr: Jack Plotnick, Jennifer Cox, Sam Pancake, Kali Rocha, Michael Stoyanov, 2014, USA, 94 min.

Few movies are compared simultaneously to GALAXY QUEST, THE ICE STORM, “Space: 1999,” HAPPINESS, and FAR FROM HEAVEN, but few movies are anything quite like SPACE STATION 76, a brilliantly daffy film from first-time director Jack Plotnick (known for acting in films like GIRLS WILL BE GIRLS and GODS AND MONSTERS). Mixing a perfectly absurdist view of 1970s science fiction with equal parts farce and tragedy, this film – based on the L.A. stage hit – has a heart beating within its beige polyester astronaut uniforms. The arrival of Jessica (Liv Tyler) on Space Station 76 sets off any number of revelations among the crew, from the closeted captain (Patrick Wilson) to the unhappily married mechanic (Matt Bomer), whose wife (Marisa Coughlan) is falling for her analyst – who happens to be a robot. Comedy, tragedy, cigarettes, disco, zero gravity, asteroids, and Qiana, SPACE STATION 76 has it all. CLOSING NIGHT AFTER-PARTY: TBA

Troublemakers, rabblerousers, and rebels – it’s rarely the polite who make history. 2014 Outfest Los Angeles pays tribute to the artists and the activists who refused to play nice and color inside the lines: whether it’s provocative filmmakers like Pat Rocco, Bruce LaBruce, and Wakefield Poole, who shocked audiences with their rule-breaking, or the outspoken Kristin Beck, as proud a transwoman as she was once a Navy SEAL, or Renata Hill, a resilient queer African American woman who must battle a broken legal system, fortune favors the bold, and their boldness has created a better world for the LGBT community. Provocateurs are everywhere this year, from the uncensored sexual satire of Madeleine Olnek to the genre experimentation of Xavier Dolan, from the marriage equality pioneers of LIMITED PARTNERSHIP to Mariana Rondón’s unflinching examination of family dysfunction to the scholarly advancements and innovations of Susan Sontag, José Esteban Muñoz, and Kate Bornstein. Get transgressive with us.

CRAZY BITCHES

Kat (Tara Karsian) doesn’t want to go with her ex-fiancé to a couple’s retreat. Rather than waste a prepaid resort weekend, she takes her best friend Samantha (Andrea Grano) instead, figuring it won’t be difficult to fake being a couple. But then the “Closer to Closeness” workshop makes these longtime buddies wonder if there isn’t something romantic between them. This uproarious relationship farce co-stars comedy vets Larisa Oleynik, Richard Moll, Molly Hagan, and the legendary Pat Carroll.

Nolan Mack (Robin Williams) has worked quietly at the same bank branch for decades, sharing a home (in separate bedrooms) with his wife Joy (Kathy Baker). But when he begins an unsettling relationship with young hustler Leo (Roberto Aguire), Nolan’s safe existence is rocked to its foundation. Director Dito Montiel (A GUIDE TO RECOGNIZING YOUR SAINTS) explores a middleaged man’s sexual awakening with grace and dignity, anchored by a poignantly understated performance by Williams.

Eight “crazy bitches” reunite for a weekend of gossip and girl-talk at a remote cabin in the woods. A few drinks into their weekend, they learn of a gruesome crime that occurred at their campsite. Dismissing it as a tall tale, the gang continues their celebration with red wine, hankypanky and cat-fights – until one of them disappears. As the fun-filled holiday turns into a race against death, the girls turn both to and on each other. The fierce, first-rate cast includes Outfest favorites Guinevere Turner, Cathy DeBuono, and Candis Cayne.

Dir/Scr: Sydney Freeland, 2013, USA, English, Navajo with English subtitles, 93 min.

Sydney Freeland’s deeply felt feature film debut, which premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, looks head-on at contemporary Navajo life on a reservation crudely labeled “Drunktown USA” by local news outlets. With grace and an endless supply of wit, DRUNKTOWN’S FINEST undoes stereotypes while defiantly showcasing three restless characters who all set out to define life on their own terms, the standout being Felixxia, an aspiring transsexual model.

ETERNITY: THE MOVIE

In this candy-colored ode to fabulously awful ‘80s music, two Hall & Oates-ish besties, Todd and BJ, spend most of their evenings fine-tuning each other’s beats. After a number of intimate, half-naked jam sessions, they courageously come out as the two-man band Eternity! Equipped with earrings, DeLoreans, and colorcoordinated tighty whities, the two bros fall for the high life, finding themselves partying late and waking up in bed together. Eventually Todd must come to terms with the fact that he’s totally in love with BJ’s female friend Gina Marie. A love triangle ensues that threatens to break up BJ and Todd’s red-hot band and with it their, like, totally heterosexual friendship forever.

THE FOXY MERKINS

Margaret is a down-on-her-luck lesbian hookerin-training. She meets Jo, a beautiful, selfassured grifter who’s an expert in picking up women, even though she considers herself a card-carrying hetero. The duo hit the streets, encountering bargain-hunting housewives, double-dealing lady Republicans, husky-voiced seductresses, a mumbling erotic accessory salesman (Alex Karpovsky, “Girls”), and shopaholic swingers. Writer-director Madeleine Olnek (CODEPENDENT LESBIAN SPACE ALIEN SEEKS SAME) melds her singular brand of comedy with the buddy-film genre to pay homage to and riff off iconic male hustler films. Regarding sexual orientation, high school senior Lloyd (Jason Dolley, “Good Luck Charlie”) remains undecided, but pushy mom Maggie (Nia Vardalos, MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING) is trolling M4M dating sites on his behalf and signing him up for LGBT college scholarships. Can a parent be too supportive? Find out in this outrageous comedy, featuring a terrific ensemble, including Lisa Loeb, who also sings the theme song, Kate Flannery (“The Office”), and Mark Boone Junior (“Sons of Anarchy”). JAMIE MARKS IS DEAD

When the ghost of bullied teenager Jamie (Noah Silver, “The Borgias”) appears to Adam (Cameron Monaghan, “Shameless”), the straight-laced track star becomes caught between two worlds. Despite a budding romance with Gracie (Morgan Saylor, “Homeland”), who found Jamie’s body, Adam is fascinated by the sexy spirit, who leads him into a ghostly underworld. LYLE

LYLE, Stewart Thorndike’s sinister ode to ROSEMARY’S BABY, finds the perfect mom-tobe in Gaby Hoffmann (“Girls,” “Transparent”). Her electrifying performance as Leah, a pregnant lesbian confronted by an unspeakable evil, brings out a primal terror that’s difficult to shake. With dark humor and razor-sharp camera work, Thorndike takes audiences into a growing nightmare as Leah begins to question the motives of her partner, friends and neighbors.

MATCH

When Julliard ballet instructor Tobias (Patrick Stewart) agrees to an interview with doctoral candidate Lisa (Carla Gugino) and her husband Mike (Matthew Lillard), the conversation soon turns to Tobias’ swinging sex life in the late 1960s, when the young dancer had scores of lovers, both male and female. None of these three people are who they originally seem to be, and their encounter will leave them changed forever in this witty and poignant drama from writer-director Stephen Belber (MANAGEMENT, TAPE).

PERFECT COWBOY

The hard-drinking – but gifted – Jimmy Poole gets out of prison and reunites with his longtime partner Tyler and their country-western band. Their relationship is tested when Jimmy kicks their son Mark out of the group and takes up the bottle again. Featuring songs by actor-writerdirector Ken Roht, a mainstay of Los Angeles theater, PERFECT COWBOY is a gay family story of love and redemption with a twangy twist.

TIGER ORANGE

Two estranged gay brothers attempt to make amends in Wade Gasque’s charming small-town drama. Set against the sun-kissed fields of Central California, and anchored by strong performances from Mark Strano and pornstarturned-leading man Frankie Valenti (aka Johnny Hazzard), TIGER ORANGE pits two diametric opposites against each other – the closeted introvert versus the out-and-proud hunk. The result is a blunt, playful meditation on queer sibling rivalry and the childhood bonds that force us together. AFTER-PARTY: Akbar

WHAT IT WAS

In director Daniel Armando’s multilayered film, Adina, a successful Latina actress, returns to New York in the aftermath of the death of her sister and the collapse of her marriage. Unable to face her mother, she finds herself in a fog, drifting through her days. Memories dissolve into the present as she tumbles through a series of intense, complex connections with a sexy, butch body artist, a young college student, and a former girlfriend. With confident directing, assured performances, and intuitive editing and cinematography, WHAT IT WAS masterfully conveys the emotional textures of Adina’s waking dream of a life.

X/Y

Gender stereotypes get flipped upside the head in Ryan Piers Williams’ sexy and subversive X/Y. After a heartbreaking confession, Sylvia and Mark – played by real-life couple America Ferrera and Williams – split up and immediately search for quick-fix relationships. While Sylvia tries to make sense of feelings for her co-worker (Common), Mark falls into the arms of his dashing bi-sexual friend Jake (Jon Paul Phillips). Spearheaded by one of Ferrera’s rawest and most revealing performances to date, X/Y attempts to make sense of sex and love in the frenetic streets of New York City. BAD HAIR

Dir: Sophie Hyde, Scr: Matthew Cormack, 2013, Australia, 114 min.

Dir/Scr: Mariana Rondón, 2013, Venezuela / Peru / Germany, Spanish with English subtitles, 93 min.

Sixteen-year-old Billie (played by rising Australian star Tilda Cobham-Hervey) is blindsided by the news that her mother, James, is planning to transition from female to male and that, during this time, Billie will live at her father’s house. Billie and James agree to meet every Tuesday during their year apart. As James transitions and becomes less emotionally available, Billie covertly explores her own identity and sexuality with two older schoolmates, testing the limits of her own power, desire, and independence.

Trapped in a vicious cycle of poverty, with employment prospects looking grim, a panicked single mother lashes out at her effeminate 9-year-old son for potentially being gay. Filmed with unflinching honesty, BAD HAIR tackles racial and sexual prejudices within an impoverished section of Venezuela without making villains of its characters. Filmmaker Mariana Rondón’s film floored audiences and critics at the Toronto International Film Festival, earning praise for its striking camera work and harrowing portrayal of desperation and abuse.

While Sieger deals with family troubles, Marc is outgoing and engaging, and before long, the two teens fall in love over the course of a summer spent running, swimming, and stealing kisses in the forest. Sieger must weigh his reputation in the eyes of his widowed father against the joy and freedom he finds in Marc’s arms in this adorable romance.

The other five spontaneously compose and perform a song to cheer her up, which leads to a viral video that transforms these six non-professionals into Universong competitors! I AM HAPPINESS ON EARTH Julián Hernández, one of Mexico’s premier queer filmmakers (RAGING SUN, RAGING SKY), returns with this tale of a film director struggling with the line between his sexually charged reality and equally arousing cinematic creations. Will Emiliano be able to sustain his relationship, or will his lust for beauty and meaning lead him elsewhere? Furious couplings between gorgeous men include an exhilaratingly explicit play-within-a-play. Hernández’s boldly poetic romance compares with such films as Fellini’s 8½, Godard’s CONTEMPT, and others exploring the connections among love, sex, creativity, and filmmaking.

WINTER JOURNEY

WINTER JOURNEY offers a fiery romantic tale that confronts Russia’s homophobic campaign of hate without once referencing it directly. Cloaked in controversy but, until now, seen by few in the U.S., Sergey Taramaev and Liubov Lvova’s baroque tale follows an alcoholic opera protégé who unwittingly crosses paths with a violent outlaw. In a single moment, sparks fly between the two, and suddenly nothing else matters in this delirious journey through the chilly landscapes of contemporary Russia.

At the time, anyone making what the government considered pornography was at risk of prosecution. Poole challenged the system with his iconic BOYS IN THE SAND, becoming famous for the defiant artistry he instilled in dozens of sexually explicit works, whose impact forever changed adult film.

LADY VALOR: THE KRISTIN BECK STORY Dir: Sandrine Orabona, Mark Herzog, 2014, USA, 90 min.

Just a few years ago, Kristin Beck was a tough male Navy SEAL assigned to the world’s most dangerous missions. Now, with bravery and no shortage of wartime scars, she’s embarking on her most difficult journey yet. Kristin discovers that living her truth publicly (starting with an appearance on “Anderson Cooper 360”) can be as much a challenge as any military maneuver she’s survived. Uplifting and powerful, this documentary skillfully weaves archival footage and interviews with friends and family alongside Kristin’s current travels. THE LAST ONE

Dir: Nadine C. Licostie, 2013, USA, 80 min.

In telling the story of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, this moving and acclaimed documentary explores the different U.S. and international communities that have been touched by the epidemic, participating in what has been called the world’s largest folk art project. Beginning in the 1980s and stretching into the present day, as the AIDS epidemic continues to affect pockets of the African American community in the South, THE LAST ONE gives a human face to an ever-growing quilt. The film’s title is, all by itself, a hopeful belief that soon the last one of these panels be added marking the end of a crisis that has already crippled so many. SPONSORED BY

LETTER TO ANITA

In the late 1970s, Dr. Ronni Sanlo, a divorced mother of two who would later become Director of the UCLA LGBT Center, lost custody of her children after coming out as a lesbian. This injustice propelled her into a life of LGBT activism. Narrated by award-winning actress Meredith Baxter, LETTER TO ANITA explores the painful legacy of singer Anita Bryant’s infamous “Save Our Children” campaign. Dir/Scr: Blair Doroshwalther, 2013, USA, 75 min.

In 2006, seven African American lesbians were enjoying an evening in Manhattan’s West Village when one of them was sexually harassed by a young man. The women defended their friend and left the man hospitalized with a minor injury. Quickly, the women were labeled “lesbian gang members” and eventually given severe prison sentences. WHERE’S THE MONEY? Independent film financing is alive and kicking. Producers and filmmakers recognize that the use of social media, a variety of new distribution windows, and setting realistic goals are the new reality. A panel of Outfest Alumni directors and producers will tell you how they found the money and will answer your questions. They will share the paths they’ve taken to find financing and help get you pointed in the right direction to connect with producers, agents, funders, distributors, sales agents, festival programmers, and more. Make this the year you make your film!

LONGTIME COMPANION 25TH ANNIVERSARY Dir. Norman René, Scr: Craig Lucas, 1989, USA, 96 min.

A group of friends welcomes the excitement and challenges of the 1980s, but not long after The New York Times runs a story about the new “gay cancer,” they find themselves dealing with the mounting AIDS epidemic. The poignant and powerful LONGTIME COMPANION was a groundbreaking theatrical feature examining the harrowing impact of the arrival of HIV/AIDS. The extraordinary ensemble mixed veterans (Bruce Davison earned a well-deserved Oscar nomination) with newcomers on the cusp of stardom (Mary-Louise Parker and Campbell Scott). Join cast and crew as they reflect upon the silver anniversary of this landmark drama. POST-SCREENING RECEPTION: Harmony Gold

OUTFEST UCLA LEGACY PROJECT

The Outfest UCLA Legacy Project, a partnership between Outfest and UCLA Film & Television Archive, is the only program in the world dedicated to saving and protecting LGBT moving images.

PAT ROCCO’S BIRTHDAY PARTY! In the 1960s and ‘70s, Pat Rocco directed dozens of gay erotic short films and shot extensive documentary footage of the burgeoning gay rights movement. This year, the incredible filmmaker, activist, and all-around human being turns 80! Join us for a titillating program of gems from Rocco’s hulking catalog, including the world premiere of the Outfest UCLA Legacy Project–restored SIGN OF PROTEST (1970), which documents a Gay Liberation march opposing the “Fagots [sic] stay out” sign at Barney’s Beanery with unexpected gaiety (pun intended). Other highlights will include special celebrity guests and a rare appearance by Rocco himself as he accepts an achievement award honoring his incomparable contributions to LGBT history and culture.
