ell, the electric vehicle concept is starting to creep into our lives through every car, truck and bicycle manufacturer in the country. This writer has grown up with vehicles that have names synonymous with horsepower and kick-booty engines. They all had one thing in common. They ran on gasoline! Now, having started my column with a lead-in, let me give you my thoughts on EVs (electric vehicles). These comments reflect my opinion — everyone has the right to have counter beliefs. Let me start off by sharing how I came to my opinion on the electric ride. I have owned my 1963 Corvette since 1974. It’s a 327-cubic-inch-powered, all-engine, no-creaturecomforts ride. You start it up and it eventually cooperates. You now have the lubbing sound of a fuel-consuming, carbon monoxide-spewing engine. It’s music and perfume for us old car guys. To continue, I now receive a copy of an all-Corvette publication I subscribe to and, lo and behold, up pops an article on the EV Corvette. An EV Vette to me and perhaps many others is the spine-tingling reality that this electric car thing has now crossed over into my world. It’s like I saw other companies state they are going electric, but a plug-in Corvette … NO! GM has announced that there will be an EV, traditional motor and a hybrid Vette in the next year. Well, I know it’s a sign of the times and I know about how electric has instant power and torque and all the other stuff, but it’s hard to take no sounds of raw horsepower and now no smells of petrol fumes. To those of us who grew up in the golden age of American muscle, a performance car was a machine that stimulates one’s senses. Think about it, the first sense that comes into play is the sense of sight. That would be the looks of a cool ride with lots of pizzazz and style. Then the ignition key is turned, and the sound of a sleeping engine roars to life. Lots of noise follows, with that distinct sound from a hot cam and/or throaty exhaust pitch. An internal combustion engine car will definitely get you to absorb the odor of expelled exhaust gases and maybe some unspent fuel. It’s like perfume (au de petrol). A muscle car with a traditional motor has something we can feel to the touch. A driver holds on the steering wheel and shift lever and you can feel the engine vibrating right into your nerve endings. Finally, you can taste the sensation of a cool motor because like a fine wine or a stout beer, there just ain’t nothing like the real thing. The EV is here and you can shout up into the rafters about its good merits. It is your most profound right to do. But for many of us traditional cruisers, well, we prefer to hang on to our gasoline-drinking machines.

Department of Fish and Wildlife Services: Gotta love the Barracuda, Marlin and Cougar…need to see more of them. Department of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: There’s no cure for cruisin’ car fever. Department of Energy: Are there EV charging stations along Route 66? I’m asking for a friend.
