The Art of Chiang Mai

Kalle Hamm

An art exhibition that has been touring the world will arrive at Chiang Mai University ArtCentre this month and is the product of a group of friends who met at Lahti Arts Institute in Finland. Collectivly they are known as Pizzeria Babylon. Individually they are Orawan Kusonsong from Thailand, Riku Mäkinen from Finland who lives in Sweden, Kalle Hamm from Finland and his Iranian born boyfriend Dzanil Kamanger. The work displays a dramatic diversity of mediums and styles with the collaborative pieces by Hamm and Kamanger sure to shock some of the exhibition’s visitors with its explicit gay themes.

Riku Mäkinen

Mäkinen exhibits five lithographic prints called “Monuments”. Partly transparent constructions are versions of monuments of dictatorships in the modern western society where the politics of suppression is often hidden behind “good deeds” – not revealing its corrupted, nationalist, economic or phobic real reason.

Dzamil Kamanger

The work Orawan Kusonsong is a comment on the current political situation in Thailand and the mindless following of the established powers.
