Dr. Franz Jones, the Director of Regenerative Medicine at South Florida Sports Medicine Associates, has been helping people with neck, back, or joint pain reduce their pain and regain their day-to-day activities for years.

Dr. Jones has participated in several clinical trials and authored numerous case reports in peer-reviewed journals. When he is not helping his patients get well, Dr. Jones enjoys spending time with his family, staying active, and doing home renovation and property rehab projects.

We sat down with Dr. Jones, who is an expert in Interventional Spine, Sports, and Regenerative Medicine, to learn more about how he helps patients improve their quality of life. Tell us about your practice.

Our practice, South Florida Sports Medicine Associates, has been serving the West Broward community for 20 years. We are ingrained in the community and provide a broad set of services, including orthopedic, surgical, sports medicine, pain management, and podiatry medicine along with physical therapy services.

My particular specialty is Interventional Spine, Sports and Regenerative Medicine. I

“I have deep compassion for every one of my patients.... My philosophy is to treat every patient like family.”

treat patients with neck, back, and joint pain by using various interventional procedures to help relieve pain. I also use new, state-of-the-art biologic and regenerative medicine therapies like plateletrich plasma and stem cell therapy to treat my patients. You are at the forefront of pain management. Tell us about some of the newer treatments you are providing your patients.

I provide the latest procedures for the treatment of chronic pain. These include the

Intracept Procedure which helps people with certain types of lower back pain, the Coolief Procedure, which uses specialized radio frequencies to “turn off” specific nerves causing pain and the MILD Procedure which restores space in the spinal canal to improve back and leg pain.

I also provide my patients with stem cell procedures that other physicians may not. All of these new treatments are designed to help reduce pain and improve quality of life. In fact, some of them can be done right here in our office while others are performed at the Weston Outpatient Surgical Center. What types of patients do you see?

I see patients of all ages, including pediatric patients, adolescents, as well as adults and seniors. What other services does your practice offer, besides paint management?

My partners and I provide a multidisciplinary approach to treat a broad spectrum of potential ailments. These include everything from sports-related foot and leg injuries in children all the way to arthritis or hip injuries with our senior patients. We have experts on staff able to treat all joint, bone, ligament, muscle, tendon, and nerve injuries. How is your approach to patient care different?

I have deep compassion for every one of my patients. I always take the time to explain their condition and treatment options calmly and in an easy-to-understand manner.

My philosophy is to treat every patient like family.

Is there anything else you’d like us to know?

My wife, Dr. Marie Jones, who is a pediatrician, and I not only work in Weston but also live here. I feel a strong connection to this community. It is an honor to provide the highest possible care to the community where we are raising our children, Aiden, and Olivia. Where is your office located? FEATURE STORY Dr. Robert B. Donoway & Kathryn A. Donoway Pay It Forward

BY TERRY JAILLET

When Dr. Robert Donoway and Kathryn Donoway were planning their wedding, they knew it would be different than most. Getting married during the pandemic presented some challenges, but what set their marriage apart was the present they gave to each other and the community at large: The Donoway Center Foundation for Pancreatic, Liver, and Advanced Cancer Research. The foundation is an outgrowth of their desire to give back and, at the same time, to advance medical science.

“When we see how others suffer during their cancer treatment we knew there were things we could do to improve on it,” commented Dr. Donoway, “for years, I provided cancer surgery to many who couldn’t pay or could only a small portion. When Kathryn suggested that we ask our wedding guests to contribute to the Foundation, rather than the usual gifts, it just seemed quite natural.”

Dr. Donoway has been at the forefront of the fight against cancer for over 30 years. He treats around 3,000 patients a year from around the world, not just South Florida. In a typical year, Dr. Donoway operates on 500-750 new cancer patients with an emphasis on cancers of the pancreas, liver, and breast, and treating melanoma and sarcoma.

Bride, Kathryn A. Donoway & her daughter, Sindi Anderson-Munoz

“for years, I provided cancer surgery to many who couldn’t pay or could only a small portion. When Kathryn suggested that we ask our wedding guests to contribute to the Foundation, rather than the usual gifts, it just seemed quite natural.”

Over the years, The Donoway Center has pioneered new therapies, like the tumor ablation program. These treatments are very promising and point toward a brighter future for many patients, especially those suffering from pancreatic cancer. Partners in Life

The Donoways are both at home and in the office. After meeting in 2007, it was clear that Kathryn’s business degree and legal background would be ideal in reorganizing Dr. Donoway’s surgical oncology practice. Kathryn has managed the practice since 2009. She runs the office, located in the Presidential Circle in Hollywood, like a fine-tuned machine. What many people don’t see, however, is Kathryn’s charitable side when she is helping cancer patients navigate the insurance jungle or deal with a troubling diagnosis during the COVID crisis. Cancer Treatment During a Pandemic

Unfortunately, cancer does not go away during an infectious disease crisis. During the pandemic, The

Donoway Center has remained open and operating. In fact, Dr. Donoway has not missed a single office hour of appointments. And, thanks to the protocols put in place by Kathryn, none of their patients have contracted COVID during treatment.

The Donoway Center has embraced telemedicine, which makes follow-up and international consultations easier. In keeping with their efforts to help, the Donoways have donated the fees from the international consultations to the Foundation.

“Our goals for the foundation are both aspirational and inspirational. We look to provide an opportunity to undergo the cutting-edge treatments insurance companies often deny,” said Dr. Donoway, “In addition, there are many areas that warrant further investigation in determining early diagnoses. Though universities and cancer centers do a great job most forget that over 80% of patients receive their care in the community they live in.”

The launch of the foundation has been incredibly well received by current patients, “People really are generous, and having suffered they want others to suffer less.”

Members of the community are welcome to contribute to The Donoway Center Foundation for Pancreatic, Liver, and Advanced Cancer Research. For more information or to contribute visit or call their office at 954-986-6366

Foot, ankle and leg problems in the growing child are often considered to be “Growing Pains” in the bone and muscles of the lower extremity. While in a small number of cases this might be true, in a majority of the cases the pains that plague these children and teenagers may be caused by lower extremity malalignment problems.

Growing pains are often seen in children who are excessively flatfooted or whose feet point to the outside. Children may also appear very knockkneed. Tight calf muscles can not only cause but significantly aggravate the pain that these children are experiencing, especially at night.

Leg pain is most commonly seen, especially at night after a long day of activity. Pain with activities, especially along the inside of the knee, lower leg, ankle and foot, may also be seen. This is often associated with a general avoidance of activities and sports and premature fatigue with many activities. Many children can also develop lower back pain.

Treatment is important early on. Changing a child’s shoe gear to add more support to the foot and ankle may provide immediate help. Avoiding

barefoot and flat shoes is necessary. Custom molded orthotics (shoe inserts) will immediately help to realign the foot and the entire lower extremity. This will almost overnight eliminate the problem. Physical therapy may also help to decrease overall muscle tightness and to improve muscle strength and coordination. If the foot is flat and associated with tight calf muscles, stretching the calf muscles in a walking cast is critical to not only eliminate the problem but to prevent a recurrence. If the flatfoot deformity is severe, there is a small percentage of children that will benefit from a procedure to realign and “correct” the flatfoot.

An excellent prognosis is always seen when the cause is identified and the problem treated.
