POSITIVE PARENTING

Teach Your Child About Emotions

W

By Amelis Lopez

e live in a world full of stimulation; all day long we all have daily activities that keep us busy; we all want to be smart to make good decisions, we also want to have a healthy and strong body, some of us never stop studying, some of us workout, some of us have our children enrolled in extra activities, enrichment programs to have them ready to success in life, but what about feelings and emotions. Working in a preschool makes you realize how smart and advanced, intellectually talking children are nowadays, but I have also seen that most of the time they do not know how to identify what they are feeling and how to manage what they are feeling. It is normal , at any age, to cry when you feel sad, when you are frustrated, even when you are happy or just because we are overwhelmed by a strong feeling, but we, as adults, understand what or why we are feeling and in most of the

cases we know how to express or manage those feelings, but what about children? Toddlers even preschoolers and teenagers, they do not know how to communicate and when they need or want something they act out by using a temper tantrum, defiance or aggression, in these cases, we as a parents or teachers, have to teach them how to control/ express those emotions.

Here you have some suggestions on how to help them to express their feelings:

positive encouragement , for in▸ Provide stance, “I like the way you told me that you

are sad because you lost your favorite car”.

the child look at the mirror and make ▸ Have sad/happy/mad faces. Teach them by practicing. ▸ Children who are emotionally competent will be able to engage effectively in social groups and to success in school and life; so let’s make sure that our kids know how to are to the way they feel.

your child’s feelings, label them with ▸ ▸ Name basic feeling words such as mad, happy, scared and sad.

about your own feelings, make feel▸ Talk ings part of everyday conversation. a movie or read a book together ▸ Watch and talk about the feelings when something happens to the character of the story.

coping strategies such as taking ▸ Teach deep breaths, encouraging them to go to a quiet place to relax.
