rom an 80’s hair band ballad to classical piano concertos, the Falcon Cove Middle School talent show featured a little bit of everything. The student performers shined as they took the stage for the school’s second annual “Falcon Cove’s Got Talent.” “I spearheaded and founded this event to see what Falcon Cove has to offer talent wise. I realize that not all students take band or drama, and it is important for ALL students to have an outlet and express themselves,” explains Ian Loew, Falcon Cove Middle School music director. “These types of events will remain with these children for the rest of their lives, and it is special to see all the children feel like rock stars.” As it turns out, it was the rock stars that won the talent show. Diego Cocco, Luis Alvarado, Hector Brignone, Gabriel Mejia and Nicole Parades of the band “Faith” took first place with their rocking rendition of “Sweet Child of Mine.” Second place went to Jose Veliz who played “Valse” by Chopin on the piano. Michael Turrisi won third place for his magic act. Two non-traditional talents wowed the audience. Eric Menin showcased his hand whistling skills as he played “Amazing Grace,” and Noah Yudewitz used his violin to play “Cluck Ol’ Hen.” GEM Math Teacher Mr. Dennis Caruso was impressed. “It was great! Excellent! The violinist was so entertaining. He was a great fiddler – reminds me of the North Carolina Fiddlers.”

“I was most impressed with the variety of talent. There were singers, dancers, a classical pianist as well as a hand whistler. I’m sure it was a difficult decision for the judges,” commented Mrs. Anita Freitag, a Falcon Cove parent and PTA-Band Room representative. The talent show was judged by two student judges, Jessica Thomas and Jacob Ukleja, and five faculty judges: Denis Caurso, Mrs. Maraj, Mrs. Gentile, Mrs. Loew, Mr. Loew. Picking the winners was no easy task considering these were the best of the best of Falcon Cove. Mr. Loew says 75 acts auditioned, but only 14 were chosen. Students were selected based on performance fundamentals, technical preparation, musical effect, and ability. Trophies were awarded to the top three acts and all the other participants received medallions. Performers also won prizes from local merchants. In addition to showcasing the amazing talent at Falcon Cove, the event raised money to support the school’s music program. Mr. Loew says they earned enough money to buy a copy machine for the music room. Falcon Cove’s Got Talent was sponsored by, Cold Stone Creamery, Salad Creations, Yogurtland, Jamba Juice, Chipotle, Daniel David’s Salon and Spa, By the Strand Salon and Spa, Mariene Menin - Coldwell Banker, Anna Ukleja - Esslinger-WootenMaxwell, and Midtown Athletic Club.
