Commencement Address
Vice President Joe Biden delivered the commencement address to the Cypress Bay High School Class of 2012. He told graduates to dream big and imagine the progress they will see in their lifetime. After his speech, the Vice President stayed to personally shake hands with each and every one of the 972 graduates.
Cappie Winner
Sagemont Senior Corina Lander (second from right) won a Cappie Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play. She starred as Cassandra in Sagemont’s production of Trojan Women. The Sagemont School had eight nominations for the 10th Annual Critics’ Awards Program, or Cappies for short. Award winners were determined by votes from the students themselves through a weighted peer review voting process. Red Carpet Revelry
The Falcon Cove Middle School PTA hosted a Red Carpet-themed dance for its graduating eighth graders. Student “celebrities” walked the red carpet into the party. Assistant Principal Dave Segarra joined students on the dance floor where they enjoyed music provided by Pure Energy entertainment.
Garden Grant
Science Star
Congratulations to recent Cypress Bay graduate Felipe Gomez del Campo. He placed 4th at the International Science and Engineering Fair. More than 1,500 students from 65 countries competed. Felipe won a $800 award for his project, “A Study of the Practical Application of Non-equilibrium Plasma in Gas Turbine Engines to Enhance Combustion.” He won a separate award from the Society of Experimental Test Pilots. Felipe has been invited to attend the International Aviation Symposium in September. This fall, he will attend Case Western Reserve University on a full scholarship.

Eagle Point Elementary School received two grants, totaling more than $800, for its Kids Go Green vegetable garden. These grants were part of the $150,000 presented at the Broward Education Foundation Teacher Grant Awards Ceremony. BEF presents grants up to $5,000 each to support innovative teaching programs.
