The Simon School Offers Parents a New Choice in Arts & Sciences Education

T

he Simon School of Arts & Sciences opened its doors to students for the first time this year. The Parkland-based micro-school was founded by long-term teacher Carolina Simon.

After working at a number of public & private schools, Simon realized there is a better way to help high school students learn.

The Simon School is part of a wave of new education options that are sweeping across the country called micro-schools. These small, student-focused schools enable students to work collaboratively in groups with a variety of ages and ability levels allowing students to naturally develop leadership skills as they learn.

We sat down with Simon to learn more.

What is The Simon School?

We offer a classical education (philosophy, Judeo-Christian theology, Humanities, and foundational sciences) for the 21st century. Our curriculum is centered on project-based learning with lessons that are measured in the use of knowledge, not just the regurgitation of it.

What led you to open the school?

I genuinely care about the individual child. My goal is to help all my students become confident, well-rounded, positive, productive young adults who love and respect themselves, their neighbor, and their country.

Tell us more about Micro-schools?

Micro-schools are essentially the “one-room schoolhouse” of the 21st century. They are teacher run “tiny” schools with 15-150 students and are 100% student-centered with a focus on projectbased learning. Students are not divided by age and work in collaborative groups, with a variety of ages and ability levels. This allows students to naturally develop their leadership skills.

Micro-schools have been around for about a decade and offer a greater partnership to parents. Whereas, in public schools or large private schools parents are generally confined to the PTO or sports booster, in micro-schools parents are able to volunteer as any number of services they see a need for. Micro-schools are true partnerships between the school (the teacher/owner) and the parents. This helps create a true community for the students that is beyond learning math or grammar.

What are Fun Friday?

Fun Fridays are experiential learning opportunities. Each Friday we have an enrichment activity, a guest speaker, a field trip, or a community service project connected to something we have been learning or will learn about the following week. It is a great way to bring school subjects to life, build community among students, and

The Importance of an Estate Plan During a Pandemic

BY: ALYSSA C. BAER, ESQ. hile the casualties of COVID-19 continue to rise throughout the globe, we find ourselves thinking about our own mortality more than we ever have before. This illness has proven itself more deadly than many other viruses, and even those who survive its wrath may have been incapacitated for a significant period of time. Ordinarily, we are so caught up with “living” our lives, that we do not stop to think about what would happen to our family if we were incapacitated or even worse, if we were to pass away without warning. With so many of us spending time at home, away from friends and extended family, now is a great time to reflect on what our plan would look like if we were affected by COVID-19, or any other illness or injury.

Some questions to ponder in thinking about your estate plan include the following: (1) Who would you want to care for your children upon your death?

(2) Who might you appoint to serve as your agent to make health-related and financial decisions in the event of incapacity? (3) How would your assets be divided upon your death? (4) How would you like to be memorialized upon your death, and what would happen to your remains? (5) Have you organized your important documents, and made an emergency preparedness plan or checklist?

Once you are satisfied with your answers to these questions, it is time to consult an attorney to make sure that your wishes are written into the proper documents to ensure that your plan is given effect in the event of an emergency.

For example, if a patient with COVID-19 is brought to the hospital, a Living Will and Designation of Health Care Surrogate form should be used to ascertain who the patient appointed to make health-related decisions for him if he could not do so for himself. Without these directives, doctors and nurses are left to make decisions on behalf of the patient, which may not be in line with his wishes.

Next, let us assume that the patient is in the hospital for 45 days, and that two mortgage payments are missed before the patient is released from the hospital. These payments could have been made on time by an Agent designated by the patient pursuant to a well-drafted Durable Power of Attorney. The Agent would have been able to step into the patient’s shoes and write a check on the patient’s account or access the patient’s online banking portal to initiate a bank transfer. Without a Durable Power of Attorney, the patient’s credit would be adversely affected by the missed payment and may even result in the initiation of a foreclosure. This is precisely why it is important to anticipate an emergency before it arises, and plan accordingly.

Finally, assume that the patient ultimately dies without a Will. His property will be divided according to the distribution scheme enumerated in Florida’s Intestacy Statute. If you wish to maintain control over how your property is distributed upon your death, drafting a Will is important. In the stated scenario, assume that the patient had two stepdaughters, who were the natural children

of his deceased Wife. He did not have any of his own children, nor did he have relationships with the siblings, nieces, nephews, or cousins who survived him.

Without a Will, his assets would be divided between his estranged blood-relatives, to the exclusion of his two stepdaughters, whom he considered his own children.

The introduction of COVID-19 into our world caught us completely off guard and has resulted in many changes to our daily lives. Do not miss the opportunity to reflect on where your plan is lacking, and take action to improve your preparedness for the unexpected.

The annual event at the Sportsplex in Coral Springs is a celebration of the diverse cultures that make up the community. People from all around enjoyed ethnic foods, live entertainment, arts and crafts and fun activities for children of all ages.

Staying Safe in Our New Virtual Reality

BY SHERIFF GREGORY TONY he COVID-19 pandemic has altered our way of life and how we go about our daily routines.

For many, kitchen and dining room tables have become the new office, classroom or social meeting place. Virtual is the new reality, and while it allows us to continue to work, learn and socialize safely, it comes with its own unique set of challenges and dangers.

As we transition to using more online platforms, scammers, hackers and other cybercriminals are finding new, lucrative and sometimes dangerous ways to target people. At the Broward Sheriff’s Office, in addition to ensuring the safety of our physical streets, we are also dedicated to protecting our online neighborhoods — especially when it comes to the safety of our children.

With Broward public schools having begun their year fully remote, kids have had to adapt to extended hours behind their digital devices and the increased risks associated with them. It is important that we protect our children’s ability to learn and play online safely.

Recently, we’ve seen an increase in phishing scams through email and text messages. Aside from malware, ransomware, spyware and other dangers designed to steal personal information and money, these scams also pose a significant risk to children, who are perfect targets for identity theft because of their clean credit histories.

In 2017, more than one million children were victims of identity theft or fraud, and that number continues to grow.

In addition, with social distancing as the new norm, socialization has turned even more digital than ever before. Parents must pay special attention to who their children are interacting with online and in what manner. Unfortunately, cyberbullying is rampant and has been linked to a variety of negative effects, including anxiety, depression and substance abuse.

Here are some important reminders on what you can do to help keep your children safe: • Always be aware, and monitor what your children are doing on all their devices.

• Always keep close tabs on who your child is interacting with online.

• Look out for anything that is out of the ordinary, including unusual messages, advertisements and emails.

• Keep your firewall, antivirus, antispyware and operating system up to date.

• Ensure your child’s social media accounts are set to private and accessible only to pre-approved family and friends.

• Make sure your child never gives your home address or location to anyone they meet online.

• Have a talk with them, and reinforce a basic practice of online safety: think before you click.

MESSAGE FROM THE CORAL SPRINGS COMMISSION

September Parkland Update Commission Message MAYOR CHRISTINE HUNSCHOFSKY y the end of August, every homeowner should have received their TRIM (Truth in Millage) notice which comes from the Broward County Property Appraiser. This notice can also be found online at www.bcpa.net. The TRIM notice details home market value and assessed value in addition to exemptions. It also shows the various taxing authorities (Broward County, Broward County Public Schools, South Florida Water Management District, North Broward Hospital District, Children’s Services Council, City of Parkland, etc) that make up your entire tax bill, what their current millage (property tax) rate is and what their highest proposed millage rate may be. Additionally, you will find all the times, dates and locations of all the public budget hearings for every taxing authority. PLEASE take a close look at your TRIM notice this year so that you know how much each taxing authority is proposing to tax you and where you can go to give your input on their budgets.

Assessments are also listed on your TRIM notice separate from the property taxes.

These include the Waste Management assessment for services, which is a direct pass through amount from Waste Management for solid waste and recycling services, and the Parkland fire services fee. Additionally, some residents will have various water control assessments from North Springs Improvement District, Parkland Water Control, Coconut Creek Utilities, or Pinetree Water Control depending where their home is located in the city.

On a separate note, life has not been the way we expected it to be over these past few months. With the health and economic effects of COVID-19 as well as schools starting the year off virtually, many are understandably stressed and anxious. Eagles’ Haven Wellness Center offers free virtual wellness classes and also has trained clinicians on staff to help. For more information, visit their website at www.eagleshaven.org. I

t has been six months since Florida had its first official reported case of COVID-19 and since then we have seen cases increase to over half a million. As summer comes to a close, we look towards the remaining months of 2020 and are hopeful that through science, medicine and proper hygiene we will soon resume some sense of normalcy.

We recognize that during times of great adversity, it is imperative to reflect on the past to realize that this too will pass. September serves as a historic reminder of hope. We have overcome challenges that we faced as a nation, by leaning on personal responsibility, unity and hard work. We must apply these qualities to solve and overcome our current hardships.

Personal responsibility. We must emphasize the power in personal responsibility as this is the most critical action taken to overcome the difficulties we are faced with today. The responsibility you have to ensure your safety, health and wellbeing are actions that will protect you and your loved ones; but in addition, it will help protect doctors, nurses, first responders, essential workers, those on the frontlines and local businesses. Do your part, wear your mask when in public, and practice safe social distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Unity. Nineteen years ago, unity was essential after our nation and its people were attacked on September 11, 2001. We must honor, remember, and never forget the lives lost us on that day, as well as the families they left behind. As one American family, we must come together in service and remembrance, allowing this day to be a reminder that we must never let others divide our nation. The city will host its annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony, albeit virtually, at the September 11th Memorial located at the Northwest Regional Library. Details for times and speakers will be located on our website, coralsprings.org.

Hard work. On September 7th we honor and recognize the hard work and contributions of laborers across our country as we celebrate Labor Day. The COVID-19 crisis has made us truly recognize the value of hard-working Americans. We honor, thank and appreciate every hard-working woman and man that make Coral Springs, the best city to live, work and raise a family.

On September 15th we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, a month that pays tribute to the positive influences, achievements and contributions of Hispanic Americans. Their history, culture and successes undeniably enrich our nation and society. Make sure to commemorate this national month by thanking and appreciating Hispanic Americans in our city. We will be featuring city staff and sharing their stories of Hispanic pride on our social media platforms.

Don’t Kit-Nap Kittens!

A Kitten’s Best Chance of Survival Is With Its Mom

S

outh Florida shelters are taking to social media with a unified message, making a plea to the community; please Don’t Kit-Nap the Kittens! Every year shelters nationwide brace themselves for “kitten season,” and South Florida shelters receive thousands of kittens in the spring and summer months. When people find kittens outdoors without their mom, their first instinct may be to bring them inside or rush them to an animal shelter. Now in the peak of kitten season, Animal shelters throughout Broward warn well intention, good Samaritans that picking up found litters of kittens may be hurting them more than helping them.

Research shows, when kittens are separated from their mother, their chances of survival drop significantly. In most cases, newborn litters of kittens don’t need human intervention and, in fact, taking the kittens is inadvertently creating orphaned kittens. The best thing is to keep the mother and kittens together to ensure the kittens’ best chances of survival, until the kittens are eating on their own and can be safely removed for socialization and adoption.

What should you do when you find a litter of kittens?

▸ Do not interfere with the kittens as it may cause stress to the mother. If you really want to help, you can provide some food and water for the mother, placed a good

distance from the nest. ▸ If you don’t see mom around, observe the kittens from a distance. The mother may be out looking for food, but she will most likely return. ▸ If the kittens are in immediate danger, like under a car or in a flooded area, find a safe place nearby to move them, but make sure they’re still close enough for their mother to find them. ▸ If you have observed the kittens for 24 hours and are sure that the mother isn’t returning, you may pick them up and care for them. Newborn kittens need special care. ▸ If the mother comes back and is friendly, wait until the kittens are 2 pounds or 2 months old before bringing them and their mom to a veterinarian or to the Animal Services’ Pet Adoption and Protection Center to be vaccinated and spayed or neutered.

What happens if newborn kittens are brought into the shelter without their mother?

Kittens under four weeks of age need round the clock care which most shelters are not equipped to provide. Shelters rely on volunteer foster programs to supplement the care and needs of these newborn kittens.

Unfortunately, when babies are separated from their moms it threatens their ability to thrive and survive, which is more reason to

leave kittens with their mom.

Orphaned kittens need to be bottle fed with special formula every two to three hours, then stimulated to eliminate, cleaned, and kept warm because at such a young age they cannot regulate their body temperature. Most shelters will provide you with everything needed to care for the newborn kittens.
