bout four decades ago, the Young Men and Women’s Hebrew Association of South Florida established a satellite facility in North Miami to provide recreational and cultural services to the increasing number of Jewish families moving to the area. Fast forward to today, and the 17.5-acre Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center (MAR-JCC) campus has become the heart of the North Miami/ North Miami Beach/Aventura Jewish population. Although the facility was started as a recreational center for those with Jewish values and beliefs, everyone of all denominations and backgrounds are welcome. The MAR-JCC represents a model of acceptance, understanding, and diversity. In addition to the diverse menu of classes, programs, workshops, sports leagues and clinics, and special events, the Michael-Ann Russell JCC is more than a hub for activities, but a social meeting place as well. Many come to use the health and wellness center while others come to socialize in the many eating and play areas. Now with the expansion of the new 40,000 square-foot building there will be plenty more space to enjoy, sit, and schmooze.
The Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center is Growing to Serve the Community Better Fanny F. Hanono, MAR-JCC Chair of the Board, recently took the time to answer some questions about the campus and the new building.
What is the Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center? We are a social service agency that serves the entire community from birth to senior adults.
Though membership-based, some programs are open to members and non-members. Member pricing may be lower for some programs than for non-members. Tell us about the new highly-anticipated structure. The new facility is slated to open in Spring 2018. It will be called the “Feldenkreis Cultural Center”, named in honor of George & Mariita Feldenkreis, Fanny F. Hanono & Family, Oscar & Ellen Feldenkreis & Family. The structure stands on its own, but upon completion will be connected with a passage way and open to a grand reception area.
