heryl Eggleston wanted to give back to the community, especially to the children who are less fortunate. Throughout the years she has been painting, but it wasn’t until her retirement two years ago that she began to work as a full-time professional artist. The Plantation resident found the perfect way to combine her passion and love to help others, so she decided to donate art supplies to the Children’s Home Society (CHS) – Broward County. The organization, founded in 1902 has been providing a “family” for the children who have nowhere else to go. For over one hundred years, CHS has continued to grow and evolve to provide the right services and solutions to address the needs of children and families which are continuously changing throughout each decade. Their goal is to have children reach their full potential. Eggleston believes children in stressful situations can benefit by expressing themselves through art. The self-taught artist created “Kids Need Crayons”. Her donations to the organization are in the form of art supplies: plain paper, coloring books, crayons, and colored pencils.

“I feel children benefit by expressing their feelings through art. No pressure, no instruction, just give them the materials and let them do whatever moves them. There should be no need for them to explain

of coloring books. This type of experience helps them develop fine motor skills and patience.” Michelle Roman of CHS accepted the donation of 40 prepared packets. The packets were created with attention given to the needs of different age Michelle Roman (L) and groups. The children may use the packets at Cheryl Eggleston (R) the shelter and take them home with them when they leave. Eggleston is familiar with the Children’s Home Society as her late mother, Elizabeth Centofanti, used to sew and donate pajamas to the shelter. “We know how important it is to support facilities such as these and that there is always a need for any gifts that come their way,” added Eggleston. Roman graciously thanked Eggleston for the colorful gifts and spoke about the need for donations from the public to help shelters such as Children’s Home Society, and to help the children who find themselves in very stressful situations. Eggleston plans to donate a portion of her painting sales each year to chiltheir work,” says Eggleston. “A child’s creativity may dren in distress. be stifled if they feel their work will be judged good or bad.
