THE STEEPLE NEWS – March 2012 “Knowing Jesus, we love and care for all, through the power of Christ.” First Evangelical Lutheran Church Mission Statement

Lent: A Forty-Day Day Journey of Transformation from Death to Resurrection and New Life On Ash Wednesday we began the season of Lent, a forty day journey of transformation, modeled after Jesus’ forty days in the desert. Just as Jesus’ journey was initiated by the Spirit, so is ours. Just as Jesus’ journey tested him, but ultimately strength strengthened ened him to emerge from the desert more deeply convicted to walk his life’s path, so also we will hopefully emerge at the end of this Lenten season, more deeply convicted to walk our life path, to live out our life’s purpose. Just as Jesus’ journey led hi him m to the cross, through death, and ultimately to new and resurrected life, so also for us Lent is a forty forty-day day journey which leads us to die to our old selves, to those things in our lives which no longer serve us, in order that we can then rise, with Christ, Chris to live new and resurrected lives. In the early church the forty days of Lent were also a time of preparation for baptism. Converts to the Christian faith would spend the forty days of Lent immersed in a time of instruction, deepening their faith and spiritual practices, dying to their old ways of life, so that, on Holy Saturday, or Easter Eve, as Christ passed over from death to resurrected life, adults would be baptized, passing over, with Christ, from death to new and resurrected Life! Each year, at our Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday, we are invited to remember our baptisms, and in doing so, to pass over from death to new, resurrected Life in Christ. Paul refers to this in Romans 6: verses 3 3-5: “Do you not know that all of us who have been baptiz baptized ed into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united ted with Christ in a death like his, we will certainly be united with Him in a resurrection like his.” 1

Youth News March 2012 Confirmation Classes and Service: Classes this month are March 7 and 21. The weekend of March 10-11 is our annual youth-led service. Our theme is “Destroy!” and we will work on the service at the March 7 class. All confirmands must participate in the Saturday evening worship and Sunday 9:00am worship. Only the sermon team needs to come to the Sunday 8:00am worship. However, we will all be rehearsing before the Saturday service together. Because the youth service weekend is such an undertaking, it stands as our service project for the month! However, we are in the process of creating a food packaging drive for the local food pantries. This will be on a Sunday afternoon in the upcoming month or in April, and we will be working with the youth from Emanuel Church in West Warwick. I am looking for good dates for everyone, so please let me know what weekend might work. Fellowship: Last month we had a great movie night, and I would love to have another one. However, I’m thinking maybe we could go see the opening of Hunger Games! We could get a group together and buy advance tickets. The movie opens nationwide March 23, in case you’ve been living under a rock and didn’t know! Also, the Nerd Herd is back in swing, and we had a great time at the RISD Art Museum last Sunday. We should choose a night to pick a new book. Anyone who loves reading and all things “nerdy” is welcome to join. New Orleans and Fundraising: The next youth breakfast is Sunday March 4, and we need lots of help! Also, our big event will be our May 19 Auction and Talent Show. We will be serving food cocktail style, with lots of Cajun dishes, and fantastic entertainment. Tickets and more information will be distributed in the upcoming confirmation classes. We have seven youth and three adults registered for the New Orleans trip! We also have our plane tickets and hotel reserved. We are staying an extra day (coming back Monday) because it actually saves us money, but it also will give us a great opportunity to explore this fantastic city on our own! Sincerely, Carrie Koslofsky, Youth Director First Evangelical Lutheran Church 6

Alan Shawn Feinstein 37 Alhambra Circle Cranston, RI 02905 Please use MY money to help your neighbors in need! My name is Alan Shawn Feinstein. For the past 14 years, I have been giving away $1 million each year to anti-hunger agencies throughout the country. This year, I am doing it again… WHATEVER YOU DONATE TO THIS AGENCY, I WILL ADD MONEY TO IT. THE MORE YOU GIVE, THE MORE OF MY $1 MILLION THEY’LL GET—THANKS TO YOU! Why am I doing this? Because I believe each of us was put here on earth to do what we can to help those in need. You got this letter because we feel that YOU believe that, too. My money started this campaign but it is YOU who will help decide how many needy people in your city or town will be fed this year. All that will matter to us someday is what we did while we were here to help those who needed us. This has become the greatest grass roots campaign ever to fight hunger in our country. Your donation makes you a partner in it with me! We Are Needed Now! Please give whatever you can - I will gladly add some of my money to yours. (My $1 million will be divided proportionately in full among the agencies receiving donations toward my offer.) Thank you for sharing my heart, and the hope that—someday—no one will ever go hungry. Sincerely Yours,

Alan Shawn Feinstein

Christ’s Cupboard Food Pantry has been blessed with many monetary donations recently, and we are very excited to be able to reach out to those in need in new ways. There will be two opportunities to reach out those in need in our community this month during Lent.  

The first is a community meal we will host on Wednesday March 14th from 5-6:15 consisting of soups, salad, bread, beverages, and dessert. The second is a “First Annual Good Friday Brunch” on April 6th from 10-11:45.

This meal will be a light continental brunch before our Ecumenical Good Friday noon service and Stations of the Cross walk that we host every year. Both meals will be open to the community as well as our own church congregation. Free will donations will be accepted. Our primary goal is to help those in need, and to also invite them to stay for the Wednesday Lenten message and also the Good Friday service and walk. If you would like to help with one or both meals, please contact Christine Kellerman 738-4353. Thank you all for your continued support of Christ’s Cupboard. Thrift Shop Schedule for March
