Thank you Chief Ramos! Reflections on a Lifelong Public Service Career

By Melissa Ruzicka

As he prepares for retirement, North Metro Fire Chief David Ramos shares the milestones, memories, and meaning behind his remarkable 40+ year career.

After more than four decades with North Metro Fire Rescue District—including the last 11 years as chief—David Ramos is preparing to hang up his helmet. But before stepping into retirement, he took time to reflect on a career shaped by service, teamwork, and a deep connection to the community he calls home.

Q: Looking back, what are you most proud of?

A: “I’m most proud of our organization’s ability to overcome challenges as a team,” Ramos reflected. “Whether it’s navigating financial constraints or responding to a global pandemic, our people rise to the occasion by coming together and focusing on our common mission. It’s not one big accomplishment for me; it’s all the little ways our people shine in caring for others and each other. I’m proud to lead and support such a great team.”

Q: What were some defining accomplishments during your time as chief?

A: Ramos pointed to several milestones achieved under his leadership: reducing response times, achieving accreditation, advancing firefighter safety, and enhancing public outreach. He also highlights major projects like the integrated 911 dispatching hub and a stronger strategic focus. “These took years of work and dedication from many people,” he said. “It was an honor to help support those efforts and improve service to our community.”

Q: How has the role of firefighter evolved during your career?

A: “The number of skills and knowledge required for this role has grown so rapidly,” said Chief Ramos. “Firefighters have always needed a broad set of skills—handling everything from technical rescues and wildland fires to aircraft incidents, hazardous materials, and medical calls—but that base level of knowledge has significantly increased over the years.”

He noted that the complexity of incidents has grown, and new technologies and equipment are being developed at a faster pace than ever before. “Our firefighters have to constantly adapt to ensure we’re providing the best care to the community,” he explained. “As fire chief, my role has been to support the leaders and experts within our organization, secure funding, and build strong relationships with our partners so that our team has everything they need to keep improving and serving effectively.”

Q: What has serving Broomfield meant to you personally?

A: Ramos’ roots run deep—he’s lived in Broomfield for more than 30 years. “To serve in the community you’ve grown up around is very special,” he said. “Working with law enforcement partners and our local governments to care for this community has been a privilege.”

Q: Any moments that really capture the spirit of your team?

A: “In the fire service, we’re a family—brothers and sisters who show up for each other in tough times. Just as we serve the community, we go above and beyond to care for one another. Seeing that compassion in action, whether for a teammate or a neighbor in need, is what makes me most proud.”

Q: What advice would you give incoming Chief Mark Daugherty?

A: “Continue to grow relationships, and lean on the strong team around you,” Ramos advised. “Stay focused on community service and continuous improvement—those are our cornerstones.”

Q: What will you miss most?

A: “The people,” he replied without hesitation. “The colleagues, partners, and community members I’ve worked with every day have inspired me. I’ll miss that daily connection, but I’ll remain their biggest fan in retirement.”

Q: And what’s next?

A: More time with family—including his wife, four children, and eight grandchildren—is at the top of the list. “We’re looking forward to traveling, hiking, and maybe a little golf,” Ramos added with a smile.

Chief Ramos

Q: How would you sum up your career in just a few words?

A: “This career has provided me with so many opportunities to help others in need, and I have been blessed by the opportunity to serve my community and the men and women of North Metro Fire Rescue District.” results.

Chief Ramos’ legacy is one of steadfast leadership, community devotion, and a culture that values teamwork above all. As he prepares to pass the torch, the North Metro Fire Rescue District stands well positioned to continue its mission under new leadership.
