Culture In The Heights The Heights has long been recognized as a community that loves the arts and as an area that is home to great art galleries, exhibitions and many top artists. Surely, if you are one of the fifteen thousand people a day who traverse Heights Boulevard, you have seen the new exhibit called “True North.” We sat down, literally (see cover photo), with Gus Kopriva, owner of Redbud Gallery on 11th Street, to discuss the project. Gus is a true icon in the art community, not only locally, but nationally and internationally as well. He was the inspiration for the exhibit. For some time, Gus had longed to produce a large scale public art exhibition in Houston and what better place than the Heights! With the help of the Houston Heights Association, a 501c3 organization that fosters community and friendship in the area, the framework was put in place for this spectacular and unique exhibit. A year of planning has finally come to fruition for all who worked on the project. Gus quickly points out that he wasn’t driving the car alone here. With the help of Chris Silkwood, a local artist, and other community leaders including Jim Bennett, Simon Eyles, Dave Steitz, Catherine Anspona, and Minnette Boegel, lending a hand. The goal was to

10 OurBlok Summer

give local artists a place to display contemporary pieces for the enjoyment of the community along the esplanade. Gus recruited Carter Ernst (Pointing North), Dan Havel (Wildlife Sanctuary), Paul Kittelson (Lawn Chairs), Lee Littlefield (Cypress Flower), Patrick Medrano ( From The Hood To the Heights), Dan Ruck (Our Glass), Steve Murphy (There are things You Can’t get From Books), and Ed Wilson (Folded Plane). According to Ms. Silkwood, “The art has brought so much joy to so many and it has all been worth it. We are enriching the lives of many people and bringing joy to the faces of the visitors. This has been a resounding success.” According to Gus, the reaction from most people has been positive. “When you have such a natural setting for public art as Heights Boulevard, we just had to pull this off.” With the help of the Mayor’s Initiative Grant, through the Houston Arts Alliance and private donations, Gus’ dream is now a reality for all of us to enjoy. “To think that we are exhibiting to thousands of people a day, and the majority was paid for by out of town guests through the city’s hotel tax , makes it even more rewarding. Can you imagine how many people are viewing the exhibit every day? ” I asked Gus if there had been any backlash at all about the exhibit. “We received only one email from a lady claiming that it was surely going to lower the property values in the area” - Gus remarked. When I asked Gus how he would respond to such an outrageous claim, he firmly replied “I offered to buy her house!” The Esplanade is a declared scenic rightof- way from White Oak Bayou to 20th Street, and it enjoys unparalleled support from The Houston Heights Association and its members. Get out and enjoy the sculptures from 4th Street to 18th Street. Though the art will not be there forever, rest assured True North and Gus Kopriva will be remembered long after the exhibit closes.

Don’t forget !! Email us a selfie of you next to one of the sculptures. Just email to win@ourblok.com to be entered into our weekly give away as part of The Heights Challenge.

The Hidden Gem in The Heights The Houston Heights is a magnet for young professionals, hipsters, artists and families drawn to its small-town feel, rich and character-filled architecture, funky shops, excellent restaurants and overall quality of life.

Many Heights residents, along with those in other Houston neighborhoods, have discovered a hidden gem, right in the heart of the area,

located on Heights Boulevard, inside historic Lambert Hall. That jewel is Opera in the Heights! It just seems natural that Opera in the Heights discovered its home in this mecca of youth and creativity nestled among Victorian structures, bungalows and new construction. The vibrant performing arts company, founded in 1996, exudes the energy and excitement one finds in The Heights. Opera in the Heights’ mission is to provide a stage for emerging opera performers and to bring affordable opera to the Greater Houston Area. Billed as unplugged, unpretentious and unbelievable, the productions draw crowds of diverse ages,

OurBlok Summer 17

ethnicities, professions and socioeconomic backgrounds. Opera in the Heights puts on four productions a year, generally from September through March. It just wrapped up its 2013-14 season with Donizetti’s tragedy, Lucia di Lammermoor. All operas are staged with full orchestra and supertitles. The internationally recognized company holds annual auditions in New York and Houston. Talented young professional singers clamor for the opportunity to perform a major role in one of its operas. At Lambert Hall, which seats about 300, there is an intimacy and immediacy to each Opera in the Heights production. With a brand new executive director, Stephanie Helms; a dynamic artistic director of three years, Enrique Carreón-Robledo; and a cadre of immensely gifted performers, the company is poised for great things. “At Opera in the Heights, we want opera to be accessible, engaging and compelling,” says Helms, who recently came to Opera in the Heights from Opera America in New York City. She also served in several capacities with Houston Grand Opera during 2006 – 2011 and is passionate about the art and

the artists. “If people can experience opera in a setting like Lambert Hall, with some of the freshest talent in the country, I think we will have many converts to opera.” - Helms added. Helms explains that opera is unique as it combines several different art forms. “Where else can you experience singing, acting, the visual arts (set and costume design), orchestral music and dancing under one roof?” she says. “We are fortunate to have excellence in all of these areas, from the maestro to the chorus members to the costume designers.” The 2014-15 season has just been announced, beginning in September, 2014 and running through March, 2015. The four productions offer something for all tastes. There are seven performances for each opera, spread out over two consecutive weekends, including Sunday matinees. Verdi’s Rigoletto debuts September 26, then Hänsel and Gretel by Humperdink is in November. Winter brings a rarely performed Mozart work, La clemenza di Tito. Bizet’s Carmen, one of the most popular operas of all time, will be the final production in March.

Season tickets are now on sale, and individual tickets will be available July 1st.

A

h, the summer bucket list. Traveling, learning to dance the Capoeira, learning to pronounce Capoeira...all so easily accomplished with a quick jaunt to Brazil. Or, if you’re short on time—and a passport— it’s all within reach at the Brazilian Arts Foundation (BAF), 1133 E. 11th street. Created in 2001 by Sao Paulo native Mauricio Campos, the BAF serves to promote and share the culture of Brazil in the city of Houston. A man with many talents, Campos not only oversees the non-profit but plays a hands-on role in the organization’s outreach, which is as diverse as the city itself, with programs for youth, adults, and seniors alike. Campos also leads many of the classes at the BAF, which range from purely educational, like Portuguese for kids and adults, to exciting, culture-rich classes in Brazilian cooking, dancing, percussion and more. Campos’s specialty is the Capoeira. He began his training in 1997 and earned the title of 36 OurBlok Summer

Monitor soon thereafter. This has allowed him to teach this graceful mix of martial arts, music and dance. Other traditional classes are taught in the arts of samba and several Brazilian percussion rhythms. Dancing and music aren’t your forte? Try your hand at one of the many cooking classes offered at the BAF. You’ll learn to create a full course meal, complete with an authentic Brazilian cocktail and dessert, as well as learn cooking tips from professional BrazilianAmerican chef Cristina Corey. “Let me cook for you. Let me teach you the magic of cooking that will not only be healthy and nutritious, but most importantly delicious,” says the chef. “You will be proud to serve it to the ones you love!” In addition to teachers, Campos and Chef Corey, the BAF also employs local Brazilian artist Tony Parana to help share his homeland’s culture. Using his expertise and art background, Parana helps you recreate Brazilian masterpieces on canvas, such as

this month’s “Nordeste”, depicting two young workers resting after a day in the fields. Parana trains in sketching, color mixing and proportion so his students can continue their hobby at home. In keeping with its mission statement, “Promoting education, good health and vibrant culture,” the BAF does not solely sit back and wait for students to come to classes—instead, the foundation reaches out to the community with enthusiasm and a giving spirit. Since 2012, the BAF has partnered with the Wesley Community Center, offering free weekly lessons in art and gentle exercise, which culminates with a senior art exhibit at the foundation’s Heights headquarters. The foundation also performs for schools around the city and offers participatory workshops for conferences or team building events. Perhaps one of the most successful and large scale feats of the BAF is the annual Houston Brazilian Festival, held each September. It is here that the foundation’s mission comes together in one extraordinary family-friendly event. The festival boasts shows, games, food, music and more, along with vendors and a dedicated children’s area. Thousands attend this spectacular celebration of Brazilian culture, and volunteers dedicate numerous hours to help make it happen. Check the foundation’s website so you don’t miss this year’s festival (brazilanarts.org). Looking for a way to get involved? The BAF always welcomes financial support. Randall’s and Kroger give to the foundation through their neighbor card programs—you can help support without lifting a finger (printable donation forms can be found on the website). But the best—and most exciting—way to help is to become actively involved as a volunteer. With the gamut of activities and the wide range of outreach opportunities, your assistance can be put to use, no matter your ethnic background. You’ll be welcomed with open arms and a hearty “Bem-Vindo!”

Hill Country Heaven

Boot Ranch and Fredricksburg go together like a hand and a glove. Glorious weather and an endless number of activities make Fredericksburg a worldrenowned place to visit or live in. In fact, Forbes magazine just named Fredericksburg “One of the 25 Best Places To Retire.” The incredible humid free nights, awesome hill country views, historic surroundings, art, culture and food now have been further enhanced with an incredible development called Boot Ranch. Boot Ranch was recently awarded with the designation by Golf digests

42 22 OurBlok Summer OurBlok Summer

as a “Top 10 Golf Community in America.”

Fredericksburg has always been one of the top places in Texas for tourism. Families from all over the State annually check the “Peach Report” before heading out for what are arguably the world’s greatest peaches. Typically, peaches are available near Memorial Day and through the end of July. For many, the peaches alone are worth the drive. The area now enjoys a more sophisticated culinary experience, greater shopping, antiquing, hiking, biking, beautiful Enchanted Rock, along

with the fastest growing wine trail in the country. About four hours from both Dallas and Houston, and less than an hour from San Antonio and Austin, the area is poised to reap the benefits of the growth from Texas’s four largest cities. TOP RATED COMMUNITY Boot Ranch, located about five miles from the city center and in the direction of Enchanted Rock, is the only master planned golf community in the area, offering an incredible lifestyle rich in shared pleasures. If you are blessed to live here, you will find immediate friendships with people who share

your love of art, culture, wine, great food and, yes, golf. However, the Ranch is about so much more than golf. It is about families, fellowship and a shared sense of one of the most spectacular areas in the country. Every decision since its inception seems to have been made with families in mind. The award winning golf course, developed by Hal Sutton, is home to a 55,000 square-foot clubhouse Village. The village offers casual and fine dining over the top wine cellar, a spa and a fitness center and a swimming pool. Though the entire plan was put in place with a concept of helping you slow down, spending time in Boot Ranch will make time fly. Visitors also enjoy lighted tennis and other sports’ courts, and the newest addition is a pavilion for family parties that can only hold up to 300! Children’s playgrounds on the 2500-acre property are limitless with canoeing on Longhorn Lake, hiking, biking, trap and skeet shooting, just to name a few. REAL ESTATE By design, Boot Ranch offers a price point and opportunity for all offering Sunday Houses, Overlook Cabins and Estate Home Sites. Currently, any real estate purchase

also includes the resident membership a $100,000.00 value. The Sunday Houses were inspired by the original settlers of Fredericksburg when they traveled to attend Sunday services in town. Designed for those who wish a shared ownership plan, the spacious well lit courtyard is surrounded by five structures. A large gathering house, with four stand-alone cabins, start at around $300.000. The four of them easily fit into the luxury category Sunday Houses. If you are looking for the next stop along the journey, an Overlook Cabin situated on your own half acre parcel may fit the boot. These cabins feature turnkey plans for 2 to 3 bedrooms with spacious outdoor courtyards and two car garages. If you need more space, larger plans are ready for cabins up to 8 bedrooms. Simply pick your plan and in ten months you 44 OurBlok Summer

are ready to move in. Overlook Cabins begin in the $800,000 range. Lastly, if you are absolutely sure this is the lifestyle you have been waiting for, an Estate Home Site may be for you. Lots start at $300.000 with restrictions that call for a 2500 square foot home. Two to eighteen acre properties, and your custom builder, are available and ready to start construction. Regardless of the type of property you choose, all share unparalleled hill country views. They also share a community where community leaders are committed to the well-being of the families that choose to make Boot Ranch their home. So whether you are contemplating a retirement home, a new career, or a weekend getaway, you owe it to yourself to visit Boot Ranch.

heights business “Summer, summer, summertime. Time to sit back and unwind” - DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince Indeed it’s summer in texas! A lot of activities we will be enjoying with our kids this summer will be in or around water. Whether it be in the pool, at the ocean or at one of the beautiful lakes in Texas. Water, water, water! It is what makes our hot summers pleasant. What is more important than getting our children prepared and water ready? You might ask where you can find swimming lessons and choices might have been limited, but just last December the new Pengu Swim School opened in the Greater Heights. The owners, Lothar and Tiffany Hofbauer saw the need to create a fun, safe and kid friendly place to teach children how to swim and how to swim well. When you walk into Pengu Swim School that’s just the feeling you get. You are greeted by a boat shaped reception desk, changing huts and bathrooms in the style of colorful beach huts. There are plenty of chairs and tables with umbrellas. Music and the sound of ocean waves give you the ambiance of being in a little beach village. The location is climate controlled and very spacious. Enough room for you to wait for the kids while they are in a lesson or just swimming. There is a big glass wall separating the pool area from the lobby and the pool is heated at 90 degrees all year round. Pengu

has incorporated a state of the art sanitation system. Pengu Swim School offers perpetual lessons all year round as well as everyday summer sessions. Swim for families is offered and birthday party space is available on the weekends. Party participants can utilize the pool and a variety of large foam toys. Lots of fun to be had this summer at Pengu. Are you water ready?
