MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Leslie N. Pollard,

Ph.D., D.Min., M.B.A.

Graduates, have you heard this story? It’s been told by great Oakwood speakers as far back as Elders Bradford, Cleveland and Brooks. The story is told of two men standing in front of a painting in an art gallery. In the painting, a man is playing chess with the devil. The devil is grinning ear-to-ear because he has the man cornered. The title of the painting, “Checkmate,” indicates that the game is over. The devil has won. His opponent has no more moves. The first man looking at the painting wants to move on to view other paintings in the gallery. But the second man, an international chess champion, wants to look at the painting longer, so he waves his friend on and tells him he will catch up later. The chess champion stares and stares at the chess board, then suddenly he steps back, electric with excitement. “It’s wrong!” he exclaims. “There’s one more move.” He runs to his friend and together they analyze the chessboard. “We have to contact the painter,” the chess champion says. “It’s not checkmate. The king has another move.” Class of 2016, today is your day! After all of your sacrifice, toil and commitment, sleepless nights and unending days, this accomplishment bears the palmprints of Providence. From your earliest years, He selected and protected you for this moment. For your last four, five, or six years, you have paid the price in sacrifice—long nights of homework, careful writing of research papers, stressful hours spent in study groups and examination preparation. You committed yourself to the mission of becoming an educated servant of society. And when you reached your lowest point—that point when you wished to surrender, give up, walk out, fold over, or run away--the King, your King, had one more move! He moved through unexpected financial blessings, perennially gracious professors, and supportive parents. He moved when your diagnosis said you must leave Oakwood, or when the unexpected death of a parent or grandparent caused you to want to leave Oakwood. But today, your successful completion of your graduation journey validates the fact that our King had another move. Therefore, graduates, in the finest of the Oakwood tradition, I remind you that because of His grace, you are a debtor to our society. In saying goodbye to you as a student and as you say hello to the world that awaits you, I want to reference the thought contained in one of my favorite sermons. You are from this moment forward, officially and eternally, “Living in the Red.” As you already know, a bank account that is in the “red” means that money is owed to the account. When we overdraft a checking account, or overdraw on a saving account, that account is said to be “in the red.” Nothing is available to be spent out of the account. Living in the red means that as an Oakwood University student, you owe to the church and the world a service obligation. Every person who has received something that he or she did not deserve is living in the red. We have a service debt to others. Each of us is living in the red. Jesus said the same thing this way, “To whom much is given, much is required” (Luke 12:48). I am very pleased to congratulate you on this the biggest day of your academic career. Your hard work has been rewarded and Oakwood University is proud of your persistence, tenacity, and focus. As we bid you adieu, know that the experience and education that you have earned at Oakwood will fit you for life’s great opportunities. With each passing year, your “Oakwood experience” will grow more and more meaningful. You have entered to learn, and now, you are departing to serve! We leave you with the inspirational words of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, “The heights by great men [and women] reached and kept were not attained by sudden flight, but they, while their companions slept, were toiling upward in the night.” Congratulations, Oakwoodites of 2016. Each of you has made your God, your family, your friends, and your Alma Mater proud!

MESSAGE FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT FOR ACADEMIC ADMINISTRATION

Tricia Penniecook, MD, M.P.H.

Dear Graduate: You did it! All the sacrifice and hard work has paid off. Four (or more) years of sleepless nights, multiple assignments, hard tests, laser focus and prayer without ceasing have resulted in this: you are holding this Commencement program, dressed in your regalia, graduating. The struggle was real: praying and pleading to financially clear at the beginning of each semester, juggling responsibilities with enjoyment of college life, making and remaking new friendships, looking for and finding scholarships; you fought the fight and won the battle. But remember: You didn’t do it by yourself…God saw you here before you were born, and He sees the brilliant career in front of you. He provided the resources for you to be successful: that time you cleared at the 11th hour, the assignment you didn’t remember you had until the night before and pulled one of several all-nighters, the friend or roommate who wouldn’t let you slack off, give up or drop out. For some He provided loving and supportive parents, who held you up in prayer and sent everything they could so you could be here today. For others, He provided caring relatives, mentors and friends, family in the truest sense of the word. Your faculty worked with you, tried to pull out the best out of you, inspire you to excel. Staff and all the supporting services worked together to ensure that your progress would be pleasant and seamless. There were classmates who pushed you to do your best, give the most, strive and achieve excellence. There are relationships that were forged in the throes of pain, depression, sadness and loss; relationships that will last you for the rest of your life. Still, remember: You didn’t do it for yourself. There is a world out there that is in desperate need of your expertise, your professionalism, your commitment to learn and to serve. Your local community needs your gifts. It needs you to remember where you came from while looking forward to your amazing future. The global community needs your integrity, the value system that has been constructed on the foundation of Seventh-day Adventist Christian education, built upon the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, hand in hand with the latest knowledge and expertise in your chosen field. So: Serve with love. Work with excellence. Demonstrate courage. Live your life as a child of God. Be humble. Help someone along the way. We are proud of you. The expectations and dreams of all of those who you know were in your corner rest on your shoulders. You are the apple of God’s eye and are carved in the palm of His hand. He has you covered under the shadow of His wing. He has a plan for you, and we can’t wait to see you blossom and flourish in it. You will be joyous as you fulfill your mission, live with passion and serve others. Congratulations!

CONSECRATION SPEAKER

Paula Olivier,

D.Min.

Dr. Paula Olivier was born in Brooklyn, New York. She spent her early years in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and later moved to Miami, Florida. In 1996, after weeks of prayer and fasting, Dr. Olivier answered God’s call to enter the Gospel Ministry. Since then, life has never been the same. She is a graduate of Oakwood University with a B.A. in Ministerial Theology and a minor in Psychology. She holds a Master of Divinity from the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary at Andrews University, and a Doctor of Ministry Degree from United Theological Seminary. Pastor Olivier’s ministry has been featured in local and national conferences, on radio and television, including the Hope Channel and 3ABN. She has spoken across the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Venezuela and the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Jerusalem, Israel. She is founder and creator of the Life Skills Academy that teaches community youth financial literacy, basic automotive skills, health and job readiness. Dr. Olivier is also the originator of the Sabbath Series Animation which contains three fun and concise videos that explain God’s Sabbath treasure: Sabbath 10-103. Innovation, relevance and authenticity have been true marks of her ministry. Dr. Olivier is currently the Pastor of the dynamic First Seventh-day Adventist Church of Montclair, New Jersey. Through her leadership, the church has established relationships with the city, county and state, and has been featured on the local cable network and the local paper for its numerous community initiatives. On January 19, 2010, Dr. Olivier offered prayer to open the New Jersey Senate as they met to discuss relief efforts to help Haiti in light of the major earthquake. She also served as the official clergy representative for the Montclair Community Intervention Alliance (MCIA), which administers a State funded grant supporting local groups that promote substance abuse prevention among youth, and advises the City Council on related matters. Olivier holds several certificates in non-profit leadership and crisis intervention. She is a member of the World Wide Federal Chaplains Association. She is happily married to Dr. Smith Olivier, an ordained minister of the Northeastern Conference of Seventhday Adventists. Her favorite text comes from Galatians 2:20– “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” This is her motivation for ministry--a deep sense of indebtedness to the Cross of Calvary.

Charles Wesley Knight, D.Min. Charles Wesley Knight is a preacher, pastor, professor, mentor, author and agent of change, who believes strongly in equipping the church to accomplish its mission in the world. His ministries are centered on actively demonstrating the love of Christ to a world that is so desperately in need of the Savior. Since the age of 16, he has been preaching around the United States and across the globe, for youth conferences, university forums, evangelistic campaigns and conventions. He has a passion for preaching, social justice, youth empowerment and civic engagement. In September of 2015, Dr. Knight joined the full time faculty of Oakwood University as Assistant Professor of Religion. His studies continued at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan, where he earned a Masters in Divinity with an emphasis in preaching. He also earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from the McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois. Invigorated by Pastor Knight’s preaching ministry and leadership, congregational memberships in Florida, Georgia, and California, have significantly grown, have re-engaged, financially prospered, literally outgrown their walls and best, spiritually thrived. Dr. Knight’s broad service experience includes having served on the Board of Trustees for Oakwood University as the first Young Alumni Trustee; also on the Ware County Drug Task Force and as an engaged member of Concerned Black Clergy of Atlanta. Most recently he served as a member of the Bio-Ethics Committee of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. In 2012, he was inducted into the Martin Luther King Board of Preachers and Scholars at Morehouse College. Dr. Knight’s first book, The Thirst: How to Be Loved from the Inside Out will be released in 2016. Dr. Knight’s greatest joy in this world is his family -- his wife/best friend Stephanie, and their two children.

Kenneth Anderson

Milton Brown

Kenneth Anderson is a nationally certified mental health counselor with over thirty years of experience in the field. On January 25, 2013, he was appointed Multicultural Affairs Officer for the City of Huntsville by Mayor Tommy Battle after spending the past 16 years at Calhoun Community College, most recently as Dean of the Humanities and Social Sciences Division. In this capacity, Kenneth acts as a bridge between the municipal government and the community on a broad range of issues related to gender, faith, race and ethnicity, disability and more.

A graduate of Oakwood University, Milton L. Brown earned a Ph.D. in synthetic chemistry from University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1995 and then a medical degree at the University of Virginia in 1999. He has been recognized as a pioneer in STEM, being the first African American Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from UAB, and one of only a handful of physician scientists in the United States who holds a Ph.D. in synthetic chemistry and an MD degree.

Kenneth is President of Maximum Life Enhancement, a business management and educational consulting firm specializing in leadership and employee development training, and he speaks nationally at conferences, schools, churches, and other venues. Since 1990, he has been the host/producer of a live, weekly radio talk show called 2nd Chance broadcast every Sunday at 2 p.m. CST on WJOU, 90.1 FM (Oakwood University’s radio station). The show celebrated its 25th anniversary in November 2015. Kenneth’s commitment to education is clear as he launched three academic scholarships at two higher education institutions designed to support students who desire to achieve academic success. Two of these scholarships are housed at Oakwood University, the “25” Scholarship and the newly established “212 Community Service Scholarship.” Kenneth is a community bridge builder who has written as a Community Columnist for the Huntsville Times and received numerous awards and recognitions for over two decades of community service. He has professional affiliations with the Huntsville Rotary Club, National Board of Certified Counselors, American Psychological Association, 100 Black Men of America- Greater Huntsville Chapter, FBI Citizens Academy Alumni Association, Partnership for a Drug-Free Community, First Stop, Inc. and the United Way of Madison County. Kenneth is married to Huntsville native Sonya (Tibbs) Anderson, a contract officer for the Army Contracting Command in the Express and Strategic Services Division.

Brown is the founding director of the Drug Discovery Program (DDP) at Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC), a research initiative established to support translational research. There, he directly managed more than 20 staff scientists including graduate students, technicians, research instructors, postdocs and research assistant professors. He has formed industry/biotech partnerships, and several of his novel agents are licensed for commercial development. Brown strongly believes that academia, industry and government must come together to develop new paradigms for drug discovery and development. He is presently a consultant with several biotechs and one major pharmaceutical company in the area of drug development, medicinal chemistry and pharmacology. In March of 2013, Dr. Brown received the “Exemplar Mentor Award” from the Urban Education Institute in Greensboro, NC, for his contributions to raising the achievement and performance levels of People of Color in STEM fields, and has trained graduate students in Chemistry, Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Tumor Biology. He was appointed to a four-year term by the U.S. Secretary of Health Kathleen Sebelius to serve as a scientific counselor on the National Toxicology Program Board. Brown has lectured on developing global strategies to drug discovery and developing pipelines for experimental therapeutics. He served as consultant to Taizhou, Jiangsu, named “China’s Medical City (CMC),” and was appointed as Science & Technology Consultant of the People’s Government of Lanling County in Shandong Province, China, to help develop strategic collaborations for Chinese pharmaceutical companies. Brown has filed more than 45 patent disclosures across an array of therapeutic targets and five biotech companies have resulted from his licensed therapeutic inventions. He is seasoned at maintaining multiinvestigator collaborations in academia and industry, locally, nationally and internationally, and is driven to develop an academic institute focused at the discovery and development of novel medicine for the next generation.

The

Academic Costume THE OAKWOOD UNIVERSITY SEAL Turner Battle, class of 1950, designed the official seal for Oakwood College during the presidency of Frank L. Peterson, who asked: “What is the meaning of the scroll, pen, and torch?” The seal contains elements that give legitimacy and authority to Oakwood because they present to the world the mission of the church, the college and its students. The three symbols serve as motifs to convey Oakwood College as an institution where young men and women secure a religious education. Oakwood College is at the top perimeter of the seal. The lower part has Huntsville, Alabama. The founding date, 1896, is divided on each side of the flambeau to symbolize the separation of Negroes and Whites when the college was founded. The scroll in the background is covered by a quill pen made from the hollow spine of a feather. The flambeau is super imposed on the quill and Torah. The Torah, the oldest symbol, represents original Hebrew Scripture that contains the first divine laws. This compilation of knowledge allows individuals to find guidance as they pursue fundamental questions concerning God, man, and salvation, and reminds students that God is present and is actively at work outlining His great plan for the redemption of man. The quill represents Mrs. Ellen G. White and her ministry to the Seventhday Adventist Church. The quill also suggests the foundation for educational principles that outlined the final course of salvation for God’s people and the world. Mrs. White’s pen provided the impetus for the establishment of Oakwood. The glowing flambeau depicts wisdom, knowledge, and education that portray a beacon of light and guidance while it prepares the mind, character, and religious conviction for this life and finally eternity. The mission of students is to continue carrying it as devoted followers of the Savior who are on their mission of spreading the gospel to the “four corners of the earth.” 42

The American Council on Education, through cooperation of its institutional members, has established the Academic Costume Code, which has been adopted almost completely by institutions of higher learning in this country. The following information is provided for the benefit of visitors to academic ceremonies at Oakwood University.

THE GOWN Bachelor Black, full cut with long pointed sleeves. Master Black, long or short sleeves with arc shaped panel extended for each sleeve. Doctor Black, with velvet panels on front of gown and three velvet bars on each sleeve. Color of the velvet may be black or distinctive of the field of study.

THE HOOD Bachelor Three feet in length with a two-inch wide velvet. Master Three and one-half feet in length with a three-inch wide velvet. Doctor Four feet in length with five-inch wide velvet and panel at the sides. The lining of all hoods, which is folded out, bears the official colors of the institution from which the degree was received. The color of the velvet on all hoods indicates the field of study.

THE CAP AND TASSEL

Candidates for degree at Oakwood University wear the black mortar board with a tassel, the color of which is distinctive of the degree being received. The fields being traditionally indicated by the color of the tassel are as follows: Agriculture......................................Maize Arts, Letters, Humanities..............White Commerce, Accounting, Business ...........................................................Drab Dentistry...........................................Lilac Economics....................................Copper Education................................Light Blue Engineering..................................Orange Fine Arts, including Architecture .........................................................Brown Forestry...........................................Russet Family Consumer Science.........Maroon General Studies...............................Silver Journalism..................................Crimson Law..................................................Purple Library Science.............................Lemon Medicine.........................................Green Music.................................................Pink Nursing.........................................Apricot Optometry.....................Sea-foam Green Oratory (Speech).................Silvery Gray Pharmacy..............................Olive Green Philosophy...............................Dark Blue Physical Education................Sage Green Public Administration, including Foreign Service..................Peacock Blue Public Health......................Salmon Pink Science..............................Golden Yellow Social Work....................................Citron Theology.........................................Scarlet Veterinary Medicine.......................Gray

THE KENTE SHAWL

The use of the kente cloth, worn with academic regalia, adds more than dramatic color; this represents historic perceptions. These weavings are in authentic patterns from Africa. Niara Sudarkasa, Ph.D., an African American anthropologist, lived for some time in West Africa. When she returned to the U.S., she determined to “affirm her association” with the great African continent. She did this by changing her first name and by replacing the traditional velvet bands on her doctoral gown and the band on her cap with the dramatic Kente. Dr. Sudarkasa and other scholars have promoted the use of Kente in the academic arena. Often, professors of African-American studies distribute Kente shawls to their students as they approach graduation. Successful completion of courses that feature African, Black and Caribbean culture and contributions are commemorated by this “token of passage.” During our ceremonies, authentic stairstep patterns are seen in the original red, gold, green and black, as well as in Oakwood’s colors of blue and gold. There are weavings of the Cross, or of the curved stools of Ghana, symbolizing the seat of wisdom. Though shawls are woven in many colors, some including gold, silver and copper threads, they all usually come to a fringe a both ends. Whatever the style, the Kente shawls are worn with grace and pride at Oakwood University.
