Otterbein Colors In 1891, Florence Cronise chaired the “Color Committee” to select school colors. The committee chose tan and cardinal, the colors of the Class of 1893. The May 1891 issue of Otterbein Aegis, the Otterbein newspaper from 1890 to 1917, announced the new colors flew marvelously during the annual field day.
The Mace and Flambeau The mace was commissioned by President Kathy A. Krendl to represent the authority of Otterbein (globe) and the light of learning (flame). Otterbein’s own Art Professor Donald T. Austin designed and crafted the pieces in 2014 using maple and cherry wood, both indigenous to Ohio.

Commencement Speakers Sherrod Brown and Connie Schultz A native of Mansfield, Ohio, Senator Brown was elected to his first term in the United States Senate in 2006 and re-elected in 2012. Prior to being elected to the Senate, he served seven terms in the House of Representatives from Ohio’s 13th District (1992-2006); as Ohio’s Secretary of State (1983-1991); and in the Ohio General Assembly (1974-1982). Since January 2007, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown—a champion of middle-class families in the Senate—has held more than 200 community roundtables across Ohio’s 88 counties with students, local leaders and business owners, entrepreneurs and educators, workers and families to find ways to rebuild our economy. He has forged a reputation in Washington as a tenacious defender of the middle class, and a strong voice for workers, families, fair trade, and civil rights. Schultz, a native of Ashtabula, Ohio, was a columnist for the Cleveland Plain Dealer for 18 years. She won the Pulitzer Prize for her columns on social justice in 2005, and was a finalist for the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for feature writing. Her body of work has focused on the underprivileged and issues of social justice. She resigned from the Plain Dealer in September 2011 to avoid a conflict of interest in her husband’s re-election campaign, but remains a nationally syndicated columnist with a regular feature in Parade Magazine. She is a frequent essayist and commentator for numerous publications and websites. Brown and Schultz reside in Cleveland, Ohio, and have three daughters, a son and two grandsons.

Candidates for degrees Due to publishing time constraints, degrees and honors listed in this program were based upon grades earned through January Term and projected completion of Spring Semester coursework taken on and/or away from campus. Thus, the commencement program information is not considered official. The degrees and honors listed will actually be conferred only upon those who satisfactorily meet all requirements as stipulated in the Otterbein University Course Catalog. Summa Cum Laude–An undergraduate student who has attained a cumulative grade point average of 3.950 or better is graduated “Summa Cum Laude.” This designation appears on the diploma and permanent transcript record. Magna Cum Laude–An undergraduate student who has attained a cumulative grade point average of 3.800 to 3.949 is graduated “Magna Cum Laude.” This designation appears on the diploma and permanent transcript record. Cum Laude–An undergraduate student who has attained a cumulative grade point average of 3.600 to 3.799 is graduated “Cum Laude.” This designation appears on the diploma and permanent transcript record. With University Honors–Honors students were accepted into the Honors Program on the basis of outstanding academic ability, have completed the sequence of Honors courses, and have written an Honors Thesis. This designation appears on the diploma and permanent transcript record. A student graduating “With Honors” wears a silver medallion with the academic regalia. With Distinction–An undergraduate student who has satisfactorily completed an approved program of independent study and research, who has submitted a thesis, and has passed written and oral examinations in the field studied, is graduated “With Distinction.” This designation appears on the diploma and permanent transcript record. A student graduating “With Distinction” wears a bronze medallion with the academic regalia. With Departmental Honors–An undergraduate student who has attained a grade point average of 3.700 or better in all major subject field grades is graduated “With Departmental Honors.” A student graduating “With Departmental Honors” wears a lapel pin with the academic regalia.

Academic Costume A commission appointed in 1959 by the American Council on Education prescribes a code for academic costume that dictates two components of dress: caps and gowns. The first component, dealing with caps, allows the mortarboard or Oxford type cap. Occasionally, the Cambridge model, a soft cap resembling a beret, is worn. Either type is correct as long as it is black and of an appropriate material, except that velvet is reserved for doctors. The tassel worn with the cap has three variations. First, it may be black for any degree. Second, it may be in the color of the major field of learning in which the degree was granted. Third, a tassel of gold metallic may be worn by doctors and governing officials of institutions. Some schools make a ceremony of switching the tassel from the right to the left at the moment the degree is awarded as a substitute for individual hooding of candidates. The second main element of academic costume concerns the gown which should be all black, aside from variations in materials and fullness. The bachelor’s gown falls in straight lines from a fairly elaborate yoke. Its distinguishing characteristic is the long, pointed sleeves. A master’s gown is distinguished by arc-shaped panels on the long or short sleeves. The doctor’s gown is an elaborate costume marked by velvet panels down the front and around the neck as well as by three bars of the same material on the bell-shaped sleeves. It is cut much fuller than the other gowns and, unlike them, may be ornamented in color. Both the paneling and the sleeve bars may show the area in which the degree was awarded.

Photos and Recordings A videocassette tape or a DVD copy of the Commencement ceremony is available from Otterbein-TV. The fee is $30 postpaid. Grad Images is the official photographer for today’s commencement ceremony. A picture of each graduate will be taken at the time he or she crosses the stage and is presented a diploma. In mid-June, Grad Images will automatically send a proof and order form to all graduates. All orders received by July 1 will be delivered by August 1. Late orders will be accepted until December 31. There is no obligation to purchase pictures or to respond to Grad Images correspondence.
