Welcome Message Hello Parents and Families, It is hard to believe that we are more than halfway through the academic year and nearing the end of the winter sports season. I am proud to see our studentathletes working hard and generating strong results academically and competitively. At the end of the fall semester the cumulative GPA of our total sports program was a 3.22, an increase over last spring’s cumulative GPA. In addition, we watched our football program bounce back from last year’s 3-7 record to a record of 8-2 under new head coach Tim Doup. The volleyball program won Otterbein’s first ever OAC Tournament, while our women’s soccer program won the OAC regular season title. We were also excited to watch Rebekah Reese represent the cross country team at the NCAA Division III Women’s Cross Country Championships. As we wrap up the winter sports season and look forward to spring, I want to thank all of you who have supported our efforts this year. The Van Sant Leadership Program Leadership and Service are important aspects to a college student’s experience. Through the Center for Community Engagement (CCE) we are beginning a new initiative to help students develop leadership skills necessary for our new global society. The Van Sant Leadership Program, named after former Dean of Students Joanne Van Sant, provides opportunities for students to develop leadership skills through workshops, retreats and service opportunities. Dean Van was very passionate about leadership, even going as far as writing her own Leadership Creed, which concludes with a passage daring students to strive for their best: “May I dare to be different, dare to be courageous, dare to be creative, dare to challenge others as I am challenged, and dare to make time for this important task.” The Van Sant Leadership Program has three core commitments to help students earn The Van Sant Leadership Certificate. Student’s first commitment is to complete ten “Dare To Be” workshops. These workshops range from the principles of leadership and identity development to conflict management and near-peer leadership. Emerging leaders and students who already hold leadership positions on campus are encouraged to attend. All ten workshops are offered each semester and are currently publicized on Otterbein’s O-zone and the OtterbeinCCE facebook page.

The second commitment of the program is participation in community engagement activities. Effective leaders provide service to others; therefore students also complete 40 hours of community service. This service can take place both on and off-campus; however before students complete service off-campus, they need to have the service authorized by the CCE. Students may choose to serve at non-profit agencies, schools, government programs, and other organizations working to strengthen our community.

Leadership also involves action and the direct application of knowledge and skills to improve communities. Therefore, organizational participation is the third commitment of The Van Sant Leadership Program. Students will take on leadership roles within a campus student organization. Opportunities may include registered student organizations, intercollegiate athletics, theater productions, paraprofessional organizations, and honorary societies.

The Cardinal Learning Series: The Trial and Death of Socrates by Professor Andrew Mills The Cardinal Learning Series presents an opportunity for the public to experience enlightening presentations and participate in thought-provoking discussion with some of Otterbein University’s renowned professors and experts. Just as your son or daughter does each day, come and experience the classroom with a passionate college professor. Be an inquisitive student on our quaint campus. Otterbein University presents its first offering of the Cardinal Learning Series, The Trial and Death of Socrates led by Dr. Andrew Mills. Dr. Mills is a Professor of Philosophy and Chair of the Department of Religion and Philosophy at Otterbein University, where he has taught since 1999. About the sessions: Through an examination of the events leading up to the execution of Socrates by the people of Athens, we learn about Socrates's views about the value of philosophy, the obligations of citizens toward their government, the relationship between religion and philosophy, the role of the philosopher in society, and the way in which philosophy can give us comfort as we face our own deaths.
The sessions will take place on three consecutive Thursday evenings, February 28, March 7 and March 14, 7 – 8:30 p.m. The cost for all three sessions is $50 which includes the book, Plato: Five Dialogues, which will be available the first session.
