Seniors take active path for health By DOUG CARDER Herald Senior Writer

Use it or lose it. That was the advice of recreation and health professionals who work with Ottawa’s senior population. Proper nutrition is one portion of the health equation, but exercise is just as important for seniors as it is for younger generations, Midge Ransom, Franklin County Heath Department director, said. “We can provide guidance for strength and flexibility training that doesn’t cost anything, but should be done regularly,” Ransom said of the health department, 1418 S. Main St., Suite 1, Ottawa. Ransom Memorial Hospital, 1301 S. Main St., and the Ottawa Recreation Commission have teamed up to offer an exercise program — PATH (Personal Action Toward Health) — four days a week at the Ottawa Community Recreation Center/Goppert Building, 705 W. 15th St., Ottawa, which incorporates a variety of activities to help seniors build strength, flexibility, balance and hone other skills, ORC staff

WHY OTTAWA? Ottawa and Franklin County are home to a healthy population of active seniors, but what makes the community so attractive to retirees and others looking for a place to enjoy their golden years? Check out four big reasons to choose Ottawa in this special section. members said. The instructor-led class is offered 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday through Thursday at the center. More than 30 senior women participate in the program, Tommy Sink, ORC director, said. And some men are starting to join in. “It has been very popular,” Sink said. “You just show up and sign in. We ask for a $1 donation.” Seniors use the walking track at the center on a regular basis to get a leg up on their daily exercise regimen, Sink said. “A lot of seniors come here to

walk,” Sink said. “We see a little drop off in the spring, when it gets nice and people want to go outside to walk in places like Kanza Park,” Sink said. “Senior admission is $1 per day, and that’s for the whole day — they can come in the morning and work out and then come back in the afternoon. It’s still just a $1 for that day.” While Sink wants seniors to use the center for their exercise needs, he also likes to see them take walks on the city’s trail system when it’s nice outside, he said. “Who doesn’t want to walk outside when the weather is nice?” Sink said. Seniors also can take advantage of low-impact water aerobics during the summer at the community swimming pool in Forest Park, 310 N. Locust St., Ottawa, Sink said. Ransom, in subscribing to the “use it or lose it” philosophy, also encouraged seniors to take advantage of the city’s half dozen trails. “Use the trails for walking, even if it just a block,” Ransom said. Ottawa’s vast trail system was

one of the primary reasons why CNNMoney magazine ranked the community among the 25 best places to retire in the United States, with Ottawa listed among the top six best small towns for retirees in America in the magazine’s October 2012 edition. “When the railroads started coming into Ottawa in 1868, the area blossomed,” the article said. “The only legacies of those railroads today are the 200 miles of rail trails running around the outskirts of town. But walk down Ottawa’s Main Street and you’ll still get a feel for the era, with dozens of historical buildings peppering the landscape.” The City of Ottawa has made a concerted effort to improve the city’s sidewalk and trails in recent years, Wynndee Lee said. “I remember when Kanza [Park trail] was the only option,” Lee, the city’s director of planning and codes, said. “We’ve added a lot of trails in the past 15 to 20 years.” See HEALTH, Page 3

HEALTH: Socializing remains key (Continued from Page 2)

MENTAL EXERCISE Another area of concern is socialization, Ransom, health department director, said. “As people become more restricted to home, it is important to find ways to interact with others on a regular basis for mental health,” Ransom said. The Ottawa Community Recreation Center/Goppert Building serves as a gathering place where seniors can exercise and socialize, Sink said. “It’s not only a place to come and walk and exercise, but it’s also a place for seniors to come and visit some of their friends,” Sink said. “I’ll see some men walk a lap or two, and then sit down and talk with friends. The social aspect is important too.” The ORC offers a free coffee for seniors 9:30 a.m. Mondays at the center, Sink said. “A lot of men come to have coffee with the guys,” Sink said. “It’s a place where seniors can come have coffee on Monday mornings at no expense. It’s a weekly thing for a lot

of guys. We have men in the early 60s to a gentleman that’s 92. They talk about ball games, fishing ... Vintage Park assisted living [center] brings guys over on the bus. Getting out to come have coffee provides them with another activity.” Most senior housing and assisted living facilities in the community have activity directors to keep residents engaged and exercising. Cedar Square Central Housing, 1550 S. Cedar St., and Sunflower Plaza Tower, 701 S. Poplar St., both of Ottawa, offer armchair aerobics for example, Connie Sleichter, service coordinator, said. Licensed dieticians talk with residents at Sunflower Plaza and Cedar Square several times a year to discuss diabetes, healthful eating and other health-related topics, Sleichter said. Cheryl Allen, a registered dietician and nutritionist with Ransom Memorial Hospital, plans to give a presentation 10 a.m. May 2 at Sunflower Plaza and again that day at 2 p.m. at Cedar Square. “The topic is Aging Successfully with Prescriptions and Nutrition,” Sleichter said, “and it’s open to the public.”

Why Ottawa? LIFELONG LEARNING OPTIONS Area seniors can enrich their lives through numerous cultural events each year on the Ottawa University campus. OU offers learning opportunities for seniors through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Kansas. Classes offered this spring covered such topics as “Native American Art: How It Speaks to Us” and “Harp Music from Around the World.” The classes are offered on the OU campus, 1001 S. Cedar St., Ottawa, and typically last for two hours one evening a week, for three weeks. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute’s mission is to create accessible and innovative learning environments throughout Kansas and the Greater Kansas City area, with special focus on participants age

50 and older although anyone can participate, according to its website. KU is one of 115 sites in 50 states selected by the Bernard Osher Foundation of San Francisco to become a member of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. Since its inaugural season in fall 2004, the institute at KU has offered several hundred courses to more than 3,000 registered participants at 25 venues throughout Kansas and the Greater Kansas City area, including Ottawa University. Seniors also are welcome — and often attend — many of the cultural events on the OU campus, including Christmas Vespers, pastor conferences, business symposiums, theater and music events, university officials said.

Why Ottawa? HEALTH AND NUTRITION OPPORTUNITIES Proper diet and exercise are key to aging successfully, a registered dietician said. Cheryl Allen, a registered dietician at Ransom Memorial Hospital, 1301 S. Main St., Ottawa, visits senior meal sites in Ottawa on a semiannual basis to talk about the role nutrition plays in a healthful lifestyle, she said. “I try to talk about good nutrition and successful aging strategies,” Allen said. Allen will provide a program titled “Aging Successfully with Prescriptions and Nutrition” 10 a.m. May 2 at Sunflower Plaza Tower, 701 S. Poplar St,, and 2 p.m. Cedar Square Central Housing, 1550 S. Cedar St., both in Ottawa. In addition to talking about nutrition, Allen said, she will be reminding seniors to keep a good list of their medications and doses and to

take the list to the doctor’s office so it can be updated. “That age population tends to be on multiple medications, so it’s important [to keep a good list],” Allen said. It also is important for seniors to avoid empty calories, Allen said. Seniors need to maintain a good low-fat diet and eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and fiber, she said,

as well as getting plenty of exercise. “Seniors tend to slow down and not be as active, and that’s when you get the weight gain,” Allen said.

Why Ottawa? ACTIVE SOCIAL SCENE, ENTERTAINMENT FOR SENIORS Remaining socially active is just as important for seniors as remaining physically fit, recreation and health officials said. Ottawa Senior Center, 130 S. Main St., located in the heart of downtown, is one gathering place where seniors can socialize five days a week, Patricia Shultz, the center’s director, said. “It’s a place for seniors to come to meet new friends,” Shultz said. “Dominoes and cards are popular activities, but there are a lot of things for people to do. Some put together puzzles or watch movies. It’s very relaxed. You can get involved and jump in, or have fun watching. We have one lady in her 90s who likes to come on a regular basis.” The senior center plans activities

throughout the month, Shultz said, such as musical entertainment, bingo and a monthly birthday day to celebrate birthdays that occurred during that month. The center’s hours are 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. weekdays, she said. The center also offers meals Monday through Friday, with serving beginning at 11:45 a.m., Shultz said. The center requests a $3 donation per meal, she said, to defray costs. Bus transportation can be arranged to the center by calling (785) 242-7440. The center averages anywhere from a dozen to 30 people per day, Shultz estimated. “We’d like to see more people take advantage of the center,” she said.

Why Ottawa? TRAILS, NATURE WITHIN FOOTSTEPS OF MAIN STREET With the arrival of spring, now is a good time for seniors to check out the many walking trails Ottawa has to offer, local recreation, health and city officials said. Here are a few of the local trails to choose from: • Heritage Park, 815 E. Powhattan St., 0.25-mile walking path. • Kanza Park, 200 W. 15th St., 0.75-mile walking path. • 15th Street Sunflower Trail — a 1,984-foot asphalt community walking trail in the vicinity of school facilities on Ash Street. Ottawa also is at the crossroads of the Flint Hills Nature Trail and the Prairie Spirit Rail Trail. City of Ottawa officials made upgrading a portion of the Flint Hills Nature Trail in Ottawa a priority in

1

2013. The city obtained a $20,425 grant through the Topeka-based Sunflower Foundation to extend and improve the trail along First Street, from Walnut Street to Willow Street. The improvement project included construction of a 1,200-foot long, 8-foot wide crushed rock trail section to connect the Flint Hills Nature Trail with the Prairie Spirit Trail, which follows the same path as the former Missouri Pacific Railway. Improved lighting and signage were part of the upgrades, Wynndee Lee, the city’s director of planning and codes, said. The city also has put a focus on improving and expanding projects, such as the recent improvement project on Logan Street, she said.
