shop local All the business owners in the Old Town Boutique District are passionate about owning and operating their store. Each store has its own vision and creates an experience you can’t find anywhere else. As Alexandrians, we pride ourselves in our support for locally owned business and keeping our town independent. In fact, 80 percent of the stores and restaurants are independently owned. Our small business model makes us the sixth-largest city in Virginia, but it feels as comfortable and friendly as a small town. There are so many reasons to shop locally, but here are just a few. 1. More of your money will be kept in your local economy. For every $100 you spend at locally owned businesses, $68 will stay in the community. What happens when you spend that same $100 at a national chain? Only $43 stays in the community.* 2. You help our community stay unique. One of the best parts of traveling is exploring new neighborhoods and shopping districts. If you only shopped at mall and big-box stores, you would never get that unique experience we all want! Nobody wants to visit all the same places they have at home. 3. You nurture community and create jobs. Local business owners know you, and you know them. They donate to community causes at more than twice the rate of chains and are better at creating higher-paying jobs for your neighbors. 4. You get better customer service and better selection. You are their friends and neighbors, and locally owned businesses have a vested interest in knowing how to serve you. The store owners personally pick the items and products they sell based on what they know their customers like. *Source: Civic Economics – Andersonville Study of Retail Economics.

five reasons to shop consignment The Old Town Boutique District houses many great consignment shops where you can find fantastic bargains. Here are the top five reasons why you should consider consignment shopping: 1. Savings! First and foremost, it’s a great way to save money. Why pay full price at big department stores when you can save big bucks and choose the same designer, gently used items at a fraction of the price? 2. Awesome Quality! A good consignment shop team will make careful choices on what items they accept, and that means you get the benefit of their careful eye, resulting in great-quality items. 3. Local Support! Consignment shops are usually locally owned and operated small businesses, and it’s always great to support your neighbors and the local community businesses. 4. Save the Earth! Instead of throwing away unwanted clothing, items can be recycled to someone else for use instead of ending up at the landfill. 5. Earn Money! Consignment goes both ways. Not only can you save money on great new purchases, you can also earn money when your items sell.

tips for decorating your new home You’ve just bought a new house and need to furnish it. Where do you start? Here are the top three tips to get you going… 1. Buy the best-quality sofa you can afford in a neutral color. A new sofa is a big investment. Buying a high-quality neutral color sofa – gray, beige, navy blue, taupe, khaki – allows you a blank canvas. With it, you can change up your pillows, paint, and rugs for an inexpensive update during the life of the sofa. Also, it will travel well with you as you move from home to home, making it a great value. 2. Pick one thing that inspires you and use it as a starting point for your design. You have to start somewhere, so why not make that something you love? It could be a fabric, rug, painting, or pillows that speak to you. That one thing will help guide you as you pick fabrics, color, tile, texture, and paint, which will make your job so much easier. 3. Pick paint last. There are a plethora of paint colors from which you can choose. Rugs and fabric, not so much. You can know that you want a yellow living room, but you won’t know exactly what yellow to choose until you have the main elements in place. Don’t let a color on the walls pigeonhole you into a specific design.

top kitchen items to invest in Top quality is an investment you will never regret in the following kitchen items: • Chef’s knife, paring knife, and bread knife plus a smaller, serrated tomato knife. • 11–12 inch frypan. • A line cook spatula. • Half-sheet pan with Silpat to fit. • Wood cutting board (they are more sanitary than plastic). • A stock pot or stew pan and at least one saucepan (you may want a duplicate in the same size). • A kitchen scale, particularly if you bake, and a series of non-plastic bowls. • A couple of whisks and stirring spoons. • A metal colander and sieve. • A spoonula and dough scraper. • Definitely a Microplane grater. • And if you stand a lot at your sink or stove, the Wellness Mat is the only one to buy. Your feet will thank you at the end of the meal.

dog-friendly shopping Strolling along the streets of Old Town, you will likely cross paths with several furry friends out walking with their humans. It’s probably one of the worst-kept secrets in the DMV: Alexandria loves its pets. From doggy happy hours to canine cruises, our businesses make a special effort to create a pet-friendly environment in Alexandria. This is especially true in the Boutique District. Of our member stores, 88 percent welcome dogs as guests, and many have store “mascots” who are eager to make new friends. We make it easy for our customers to know where you can shop with your pets. First, look for our custom blue Dog Friendly decal in store windows. You can also see where dogs are welcome in this brochure. Stores with a paw print next to their listing are dog-friendly. It’s that simple! The next time you head out to Old Town for shopping, bring your pet and enjoy a full afternoon out. You’ll have more time to browse since you won’t have to run home and check on the dog!

a day in old town Saturdays in Old Town Alexandria begin like they do in other towns—walking the dog, picking up the paper, getting in a morning jog. But in this unique port off of the Potomac River, we walk the streets where history and modern delights come together for a remarkable atmosphere that is hard to match. For many, the morning begins with a cup of coffee from Misha’s Coffee, or a donut from The Sugar Shack. Next stop is the Old Town Farmer’s Market, which is open year-round with fresh veggies, homemade products, and local small businesses selling their wares. A morning walk along the waterfront is not to be missed, where spectacular sunrises are often captured on Instagram, and miles of paths are surrounded by a beautiful backdrop of both nature and historic homes. By mid day, shops and restaurants are open and bustling. Brunch at Vola’s Dockside Grill can be enjoyed on the deck, overlooking the boats coming and going from the river. If cozy booths are more your style, head up King Street for an intimate table at The Majestic. If you are ready for lunch, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more unique and seasonal menu than what you will find at La Fromagerie, not to mention decadent cheese plates.

In the afternoon, take in some sights, do some shopping, and pop into one of several museums that bring to life Old Town’s ecclectic history. During the fall and cherry blossom season, one of the best ways to enjoy the scenery is by boat. The Potomac Riverboat Company offers daily trips in season along the Potomac, plus handy water taxies if you are looking to get to the National Mall for the day. If you happen to need a late lunch, stop by the Union Street Public House and belly up to the bar for their burger. Of course a day in Old Town is not complete without an evening meal. The rustic environment of Virtue Feed & Grain is welcoming and cozy, while the menu explores a modern take on tavern fare. If you’re looking for a special date night, the walk over to a la Lucia in North Old Town is well worth it. With seasonal specials and a well-curated wine menu, you’ll want to take your time and enjoy all the offered courses.
