FROM OUR FRONT OFFICE to our fans Dear Generals fans, as we embark on yet another year of hockey, I’m excited for the outlook of our hockey club. This year, the expectations are higher as we continue our search for yet another championship. This season, we welcome many new and exciting young players along with many returnees, all coming together to make this year very promising. I wanted to thank all of our loyal fans for all their continued support and I look forward to seeing everyone around the rink soon!

Rocco Tullio President

I want to take this opportunity to welcome all of you to the 2023-2024 Oshawa Generals and the return of OHL hockey after a long summer. This season will be one of the most competitive campaigns we have had in several years. The Eastern Conference will be a dog fight, night in and night out. Facing the Ottawa 67’s in the first-round last season, showed us how much the game changes when the playoffs arrive. You must bring it every night. Nothing is given and everything will be earned. Make no mistake, there are no playoffs if you don’t take care of the regular season. With Derek Laxdal and his staff returning for there second season, they will be more comfortable in this environment and understand with your tremendous support comes expectations. The players playing under them for the second year should have no surprises on the demands and expectations on them. Our scouts have done another tremendous job in identifying talent for us and none more impressive then our 2023 first rounder, Owen Griffin who has begun to earn his way into the hearts of Gens fans, team mates and coaches for years to come. Our past is certainly something that all our supporters and everyone in our organization is very proud of. This season our entire focus right now is on the present. We want to have the best team possible to challenge for silverware again. Anything but your best won’t be good enough to make you a member of this Oshawa General’s was the message from training camp to now. This message remains the same. GO GENS GO !!!!!!

Vice President & General Manager

hockey ETIQUETTE While we score goals on the ice, our goal off the ice is to make sure all of #GensNation has the best game experience possible! We’ve made a list of some important reminders for all fans to keep in mind so that everyone’s night out is a special one.

1. WAIT FOR THE WHISTLE TO ENTER AND EXIT SEATING AREA

A lot can happen in a split second of hockey action – and we don’t want anyone to miss anything. Fans who move from their seat during play can block the view of an entire section of fans. Please wait until a whistle blows to make any move to and from your seats. QUICK TIP - There will always be extended stoppages following the first whistle after the 14:00 & 6:00 minute marks of a period (unless there is an icing, goal, or the start of a power play – just listen for the buzzer!)

2. BE MINDFUL OF THOSE AROUND YOU

Trust us, we know the games will have you at the edge of your seat, but if you lean too far forward, you’ll block the view of those around you. There isn’t a bad seat in the building, so sit back and enjoy the game!

3. KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PUCK

Things move quickly at our games, including flying sticks and pucks. Keep your eye on the puck at all times to avoid any potential injuries!

4. NON-SMOKING FACILITY

The Tribute Communities Centre is a non-smoking, no re-entry facility. Smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, on TCC property, is prohibited.

5. HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE

We don’t expect everyone to be best friends with the Petes’ fans – some things just don’t mix. But, we do think it’s pretty cool they’re coming to our building to enjoy the same great game we love. Please be aware of those sitting around you, including children and let the play on the ice do the talking. Abusive and inappropriate language will NOT be tolerated.

6. HAVE FUN

Get loud, cheer, and let your favourite team on the ice know you’re behind them – Afterall, hockey is the best sport out there.

AROUND THE chl AS OF THURSDAY, OCTOBER 26TH

MONCTON WILDCATS - QMJHL

The Moncton Wildcats are the hottest team in the QMJHL right now, riding a five game point streak. Their four wins and one OT loss over their last five games are good for 9/10 points, and first place in the Maritimes Division. One of those wins came against one of their division rivals, the Halifax Mooseheads. Captain YoanLoshing leads the entire QMJHL with 20 points, 10 goals and 10 assists, in just 13 games. Recent 1st overall pick Caleb Desnoyers has eight points in his last four games as well – adding depth scoring to the already high-flying offense. PHOTO BY: DANIEL ST. LOUIS

BLAINVILLE-BOISBRIAND ARMADA - QMJHL Winners of back-to-back games road wins over the Drummondville Voltiguers and Gatineau Olympiques, the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada will head home ready to extend their streak to three wins. The Armada have been victims of hot and cold spells in the early weeks of the season – already owners of separate three game winning and losing streaks. With consistency the goal, the Armada will hope a home win over Chicoutimi sets them on the right foot. The 7-5-1-0 Armada are lead by Levis, Que., native Jonathon Fauchon’s 13 points in 11 games. PHOTO BY: SEBASTIEN GERVAIS

KELOWNA ROCKETS - WHL Let’s get this out of the way early, their logo is the Ogopogo, NOT a dragon. Now that we’ve cleared that up, let’s talk about how the Kelowna Rockets are doing everything they can to keep up in a stacked Western Conference. The Rockets have a good record of 7-4-1 through 12 games, but their 16 points still put them behind the racing Prince George Cougars and top-ranked Portland Winterhawks. The Rockets are currently riding a four-game winning streak, with victories over Swift Current, Tri-City, Vancouver, and Victoria. With the amount of scoring they do, it’s no surprise the Rockets have started to pile up the wins. With 55 goals scored, they own the second most goals in the entire WHL. Washington Capitals prospect Andrew Cristall leads the Rockets in points and sits tied for second overall in WHL scoring with 26 points (eight goals and 18 assists). PHOTO BY: STEVE DUNSMOOR

MEDICINE HAT TIGERS - WHL Sticking with teams in the WHL that like to score, we head east and land on the Medicine Hat Tigers. The Tigers sit fourth in the Eastern Conference, just two points back of the first place Lethbridge Hurricanes. The 7-4-1-0 Tigers score at will, and currently lead their entire conference in goals for with 50 in just 12 games. The Tigers are led by rookie forward Gavin McKenna. The Whitehorse, Yukon native is already one point shy of his WHL-career high of 18 points and has gotten to this total in six fewer games. In just 12 games this season, McKenna has five goals and 12 assists. The Tigers are set to start a five game homestand where they’ll welcome the likes of the league-worst Edmonton Oil Kings and leaguebest Portland Winterhawks. PHOTO BY: RANDY FEERE

KINGSTON FRONTENACS - OHL An East Division rival of the Generals, the Kingston Frontenacs are struggling out of the gate to start the 2023-2024 season. After 11 games, the Frontenacs are just 4-7-0-0 and have been outscored 3250. Their winning percentage of 0.364 is the lowest in the East Division and was enough for upper management to look for a change. Head Coach Luca Caputi was let go by the Frontenacs earlier this week and replaced by former Bellville Senators coach Troy Mann. On Thursday, October 26th, the Frontenacs parted ways with their assistant coach as well. Despite the changes on the bench, the Frontenacs are finding some success in wingers Christopher Thibodeau and Ethan Miedema. The pair have combined for 18 points in 22 games and are tied for the team’s scoring lead. PHOTO BY: COLTON ROBB

SUDBURY WOLVES - OHL The Central Division is clearly the cream of the crop in this season’s Eastern Conference, and the Sudbury Wolves are right in the mix of the top teams. The Wolves are currently 6-4-0-0 after 10 games, and sit only behind the league’s top team, the Mississauga Steelheads, in their division. While the Wolves have only scored 34 goals in their first 10 games, they recently received some positive news in terms of player recruitment that might just give their offense a boost. Import selection Dalibor Dvorsky recently left Europe to commit to the Wolves and it sure to be a threat on the ice for the Wolves. Up front, it’s Seattle Kraken prospect David Goyette making the most noise. The Hawkesburry, Ont., native has 14 points in 10 games. PHOTO BY: EMMAH CACCIOTTI

The rookie has been finding his footing in the OHL, currently on a two-game point streak the winger from St. Andrews West having an assist in each game. After a little bit of a dry spell, things seem to be trending in the right direction as the first-year player has a plus-minus rating of 4 sitting in second on the team.

game day PREVIEW The Oshawa Generals return home to play the Owen Sound Attack after having their mini two-game win streak snapped by the Kingston Frontenacs.

It was a game that the Gens just could not get out in front in falling behind 1-0, 2-1, 3-2, and then ultimately losing the game 4-3. Owen Sound comes to the Tribute Communities Centre sitting last in the Midwest Division, but there is only a one-point difference between them and the Gens overall. The Attack are currently riding a three-game losing streak and like the Generals lost their last game to the Frontenacs 4-3.

Last Meeting: The last time that these two teams faced off was near the end of last season as the Oshawa Generals were battling for a playoff spot. Despite two goals from current captain Stuart Rolofs and one from each of Dylan Roobroeck and Ben Danford the Gens fell 7-4.

last game RECAP FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27

Despite finding three different tying goals on Friday night, the Generals couldn’t find the fourth one and dropped their first game of the weekend 4-3 to the Kingston Frontenacs. The Generals chased all night, falling behind early in the game. Midway through the first period, Frontenacs winger Jacob Battaglia beat both Generals defenders to a rebound and threw the puck back towards Jacob Oster. After making the initial save, Oster was pulled out of position by the rebound, giving Battaglia a clear shot to the back of the cage. Up 1-0 the Frontenacs took a poor timed penalty, giving the Generals a chance to gain back some of the momentum. On the man advantage, the Generals broke into the Frontenacs zone on an odd-man rush. New York Rangers’ prospect Dylan Roobroeck took a pass from Beckett Sennecke before squeezing a shot home through Mason Vacarri’s arm and the goal post. Roobroeck’s third of the season tied the game with just 4:46 remaining in the first period. At the end of 20 minutes, both teams were 1/1 on the power play and tied on the scoreboard. The Generals, as they have been so often this season, outshot the Frontenacs 10-7. The second period began just as the first did, with the Generals falling behind once again. Luca D’Amato attempted to centre the puck across the width of the ice, but put the puck right on the stick of Chicago Blackhawks’ prospect, Paul Ludwinski. Sent in on a breakaway by the opposing defenceman, Ludwinski made no mistake and beat Oster clean blocker-side for the 2-1 lead. With less than two minutes to play in the second period, the Generals saw themselves on the power play once again. Coming into Friday night, the Generals power play has been more power-less than anything, clicking at just around eight percent through the first 10 games of the season. Having already scored one tonight, maybe things were changing.

Change they did. Just seconds after the puck dropped on the powerplay, Matthew Buckley received a quick pass from defenceman Luca Marrelli and absolutely lasered home a one-timer through a crowd, and through Vacarri. Buckley’s team-leading seventh of the season tied the game back up at 2-2. Buckley is already just two shy of his career high in goals, in just 11 games played this season. The second period came to an end just as the first did, with the teams tied on the scoreboard and the Generals outshooting the Frontenacs, this time 19-16. In the final frame, we saw the third version of the same script. With the Frontenacs on the dying seconds of a power play, a point shot took a carom off the boards, fooling Oster. Battaglia, who opened the scoring for Kingston, grabbed the loose puck, and tucked it behind the pads of Oster, who was ultimately still trying to track the puck. Battaglia’s second of the night and sixth of the season gave Kingston their third lead of the game. 40 seconds later, the Generals would find a way to do it again. Ben Danford snuck into the slot from his blue line and took a clean pass from Beckett Sennecke, before sniping home the one-timer to tie the game at 3-3-. Danford’s first of the year was dished to him perfectly by Sennecke on his third assist of the night. With the teams tied again, many people had this one going the distance to be deciding in overtime. That was until Linus Hemstrom contributed his thoughts to the conversation. With just under four minutes to go, the Frontenacs would strike again on the power play. Behind the net, Tyler Savard would circle the puck back to the front of the net, where Hemstrom stood waiting, before easily shooting the puck across his body and into the net. Despite their ability to do so all game, the Generals just couldn’t find a way to tie the game a fourth time, and ultimately dropped the game 4-3 to the Frontenacs. The Generals outshot the Frontenacs 28-26 but were only 2/5 on the penalty kill. For his three-point effort, Beckett Sennecke was awarded the third star.

Giving back has always been important to my family and me. Starting The John Tavares Foundation was something we talked about for a long time, and is something I’m incredibly proud of. The foundation is centered on coming together to ensure the next generation has access to healthy foods, an understanding of the benefits of movement and increased availability of mental health resources. IN MEMORIAM On July 30th, the entire Oshawa Generals organization and family was devastated with the news of the passing of long-time scour Michael ‘Craiger’ Craig. Michael unfortunately lost his batter with a rare form of colorectal cancer. Craiger, as he was known around the rink, was a scout with the Generals’ organization for Eastern Ontario for more than 15 years. He scouted players such as Will Petschenig, Daniel Altshuller, Serron Noel, William Ennis, and current General Matthew Buckley – just to name a few. Michael was also a part of the 2014-2015 Memorial Cup Championship run. Throughout his career on and off the ice, Michael selflessly helped and assisted so many students, Special Olympic athletes, and OHL and minor hockey players – touching and enriching countless lives.

MIKE CRAIG 1976-2023

The entire Oshawa Generals organization continues to send their love to entire Craig family, his students, and all of the players who he crossed paths with.

BOOSTS OSHAWA GENERALS

Last season, the Oshawa Generals found themselves in a fight for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference until the final week of play. Fortunately enough, some timely wins meant the team squeezed into the postseason – by a single point. They were met with the formidable opponent, and league leaders, the Ottawa 67’s. A five game series saw the Generals bow out of the playoffs, ending the season sooner than many ever want it to end. Despite the early end, there was one diamond in all the rough – a sixth overall pick.

The Oshawa Generals used their sixth overall selection at the 2023 OHL Priority Selection to draft forward Owen Griffin from the York-Simcoe Express. The Markham, Ont., native joins now teammates Beckett Sennecke, Ben Danford, and Calum Ritchie as recent first round selections by the Generals. “Getting drafted by Oshawa was so exciting,” said Griffin. “The first thing I thought that day was ‘I just can’t wait to get to Oshawa and meet the rest of the team.” Well, it didn’t take long for Griffin to fit right in both on and off the ice. His skills on the ice were no surprise to anyone who followed him last year though. In the 2022-2023 season with the York-Simcoe Express, Griffin played 35 games, scored 51 goals, and added 43 assists for 94 points. His totals were good for 2.7 points per game. Ahead of the 2023 OHL Priority Selection, Griffin was described as one of the smartest and most skilled centers from this year’s draft class. He makes everyone around him better as he puts the puck in areas where they will be successful. His smarts and skill were on full display during the 2023 preseason schedule. Griffin finished exhibition play at the top of the team’s leaderboard with five points in four games. He also finished among top of the rookie scoring leaderboard. With a young, but exceedingly skilled group of players, the addition of Griffin to the lineup should mean the Generals are not only taking a step forward from last season, but one step closer to being true contenders among the best of the OHL.
