FROM OUR FRONT OFFICE to our fans Dear Generals fans, as we embark on yet another year of hockey, I’m excited for the outlook of our hockey club. This year, the expectations are higher as we continue our search for yet another championship. This season, we welcome many new and exciting young players along with many returnees, all coming together to make this year very promising. I wanted to thank all of our loyal fans for all their continued support and I look forward to seeing everyone around the rink soon!

Rocco Tullio President

I want to take this opportunity to welcome all of you to the 2023-2024 Oshawa Generals and the return of OHL hockey after a long summer. This season will be one of the most competitive campaigns we have had in several years. The Eastern Conference will be a dog fight, night in and night out. Facing the Ottawa 67’s in the first-round last season, showed us how much the game changes when the playoffs arrive. You must bring it every night. Nothing is given and everything will be earned. Make no mistake, there are no playoffs if you don’t take care of the regular season. With Derek Laxdal and his staff returning for there second season, they will be more comfortable in this environment and understand with your tremendous support comes expectations. The players playing under them for the second year should have no surprises on the demands and expectations on them. Our scouts have done another tremendous job in identifying talent for us and none more impressive then our 2023 first rounder, Owen Griffin who has begun to earn his way into the hearts of Gens fans, team mates and coaches for years to come. Our past is certainly something that all our supporters and everyone in our organization is very proud of. This season our entire focus right now is on the present. We want to have the best team possible to challenge for silverware again. Anything but your best won’t be good enough to make you a member of this Oshawa General’s was the message from training camp to now. This message remains the same. GO GENS GO !!!!!!

hockey ETIQUETTE While we score goals on the ice, our goal off the ice is to make sure all of #GensNation has the best game experience possible! We’ve made a list of some important reminders for all fans to keep in mind so that everyone’s night out is a special one.

1. WAIT FOR THE WHISTLE TO ENTER AND EXIT SEATING AREA

A lot can happen in a split second of hockey action – and we don’t want anyone to miss anything. Fans who move from their seat during play can block the view of an entire section of fans. Please wait until a whistle blows to make any move to and from your seats. QUICK TIP - There will always be extended stoppages following the first whistle after the 14:00 & 6:00 minute marks of a period (unless there is an icing, goal, or the start of a power play – just listen for the buzzer!)

2. BE MINDFUL OF THOSE AROUND YOU

Trust us, we know the games will have you at the edge of your seat, but if you lean too far forward, you’ll block the view of those around you. There isn’t a bad seat in the building, so sit back and enjoy the game!

3. KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PUCK

Things move quickly at our games, including flying sticks and pucks. Keep your eye on the puck at all times to avoid any potential injuries!

4. NON-SMOKING FACILITY

The Tribute Communities Centre is a non-smoking, no re-entry facility. Smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, on TCC property, is prohibited.

5. HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE

We don’t expect everyone to be best friends with the Petes’ fans – some things just don’t mix. But, we do think it’s pretty cool they’re coming to our building to enjoy the same great game we love. Please be aware of those sitting around you, including children and let the play on the ice do the talking. Abusive and inappropriate language will NOT be tolerated.

6. HAVE FUN

Get loud, cheer, and let your favourite team on the ice know you’re behind them – Afterall, hockey is the best sport out there.

AROUND THE chl AS OF THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19TH

BAIE-COMEAU DRAKKAR - QMJHL The Drakkar have begun to separate themselves atop of the leaders of the QMJHL’s Eastern Conference. What looked to be the Mooseheads’s conference to lose, a hot streak by the Drakkar has them in first place by three points. With points in nine of their eleven games, the Drakkar have a strong record of 7-2-2-0 to start their season. Justin Gill leads the way offensively with 12 points in eight games. Gill was selected by the New York Islanders in the 5th round of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. PHOTO BY: KASSANDRA BLAIS PHOTOGRAPHIE

SHAWINIGAN CATARACTES - QMJHL In the Western Conference, it’s the 2012 Memorial Cup champions sitting in first place. After 10 games, the Cataractes sit alone in first place with a record of 7-2-1-0 and 15 points. Having already taken down tough opponents in the Sherbrooke Phoenix and and the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, the Cataractes are making a case as one of the QMJHL’s contenders for the Gilles-Corteau trophy. Overage forward Lou-Félix Denis is the key to their success, with 14 points in 10 games, including three shorthanded goals. PHOTO BY: VINCENT LETOURNEAU

REGINA PATS - WHL The 2018 Memorial Cup hosts are finding their footing atop the WHL standings once again early in 2023. After 11 games, the Pats are 7-3-1-0 with 15 points, and are 1st overall in the WHL after the first month of action. The Pats are currently riding a four-game winning streak. 2005-born Tanner Howe leads the Pats with eight goals and nine assists for 17 points in just 11 games. His 17 points are good enough for sixth overall in the WHL as well. In net, Kelton Pyne is seeing most of the action, appearing in six games, playing to a 3-1-1-0 record and a goals against average of just 2.80. PHOTO BY: RAJPUT ROHAN

BRANDON WHEAT KINGS - WHL A back-and-forth season has started to turn towards the bottom of the standings for the Brandon Wheat Kings. After an exchange of wins and losses. The Wheat Kings now find themselves on a three-game losing skid. Most recently, the Wheat Kings were rolled over by the Portland Winterhawks 11-3. At just 5-6-0-1 there’s still time to turn it around before teams begin to separate themselves in the conference standings. Rylen Roersma will be a huge factor if the team from Brandon does turn it around. The 2004-born centre has 17 points in just 12 games, on pace to crush his career best 36 points in 65 games from a season ago. PHOTO BY: SCRAMBLE STUDIO

OTTAWA 67’s - OHL It’s becoming common place to see both our OHL selections this week at the top of the standings. In the East Division, the Ottawa 67’s are showing they aren’t satisfied with last season’s second round exit. After six games, the 67’s are 4-2-0-0 for eight points, just one behind the division leading Petes. In a season where the Central Division looks to be the home of the Eastern Conference’s best, the East Division is right there for the 67’s taking. After some notable departures left the nation’s capital, Luca Pinelli continues to lead offensively. In six games, Pinelli leads the team with five goals. PHOTO BY: TIM AUSTEN

LONDON KNIGHTS - OHL Across the conference are the always star-studded London Knights. Last season, the Knights made it all the way to the OHL Championship series before dropping the series to the Peterborough Petes. This year, the Knights look even better. After nine games played, the Knights are 6-2-0-1 and sit atop both the Midwest Division and Western Conference. Their 13 points are good for second in the league overall, behind only the Mississauga Steelheads’ 14. The return of Leafs’ prospect Easton Cowan has made an immediate impact with nine points in four games. Import forward Kasper Halttunen has also been lighting it up since joining the Knights, scoring seven goals and two assists in nine games. PHOTO BY: LUKE DURDA

The first-year OHL player from Finland is riding a three-game point streak scoring two goals and adding an assist over that stretch. A big and physical presence on the ice, Kumpulainen will look to build on his current form of play.

game day PREVIEW It’s Country Night Friday when the Oshawa Generals take on the Brantford Bulldogs at the Tribute Communities Centre – where the first 3,000 people through the doors tonight will receive a free Oshawa Generals cowboy hat! The Gens stay at home and look to rebound after their first home loss Sunday night against the North Bay Battalion. Oshawa hung in for two periods going into the third tied at two, but three unanswered by the Battalion put the game to rest 5-2. The Bulldogs come into town on a four-game losing streak, sitting last in the East Division this season.

Last Meeting: The Generals last took to the ice against the Bulldogs on October 7th where it was Brantford picking up their only win of the season. This meeting was the first time that Brantford would play on home ice under the name the Brantford Bulldogs. After the Gens broke the scoring courtesy of captain Stuart Rolofs, the Bulldogs scored three unanswered. Although the Generals were able to cut the lead to one in the third when Beckett Sennecke wristed one past the goalie, Brantford would add an empty netter winning 5-2 before their capacity crowd of 3,000+.

last game RECAP SUNDAY, OCTOBER 15

For the first time in the 2023-24 season the Oshawa Generals have lost at the Tribute Communities Centre after falling 5-2 to the North Bay Battalion. A hat trick from North Bay winger Owen Van Steensel lifted the Battalion past the Generals as Dom DiVincentiis stood tall in net making 21 saves in the win. Oshawa got goals from Rasmus Kumpulainen and Matthew Buckley, but it was not enough to remain perfect on home ice. The Gens came out of the gate hot as Beckett Sennecke picked off a Battalion pass before springing Kumpulainen on a breakaway. The Fin faked to th backhand bringing it back to his forehand and sliding it past an outstretched DiVincentiis making it 1-0 Gens. It was the Battalion responding a little over five minutes later when Jacob Therrien made a nice move to get past a Gens defenceman, then it was a nice shot beating Oster over his glove. Buckley broke the deadlock in the second, jumping on a loose puck in front of the net and knocking it past DiVincentiis after a Luca Marrelli shot hit a North Bay stick making it 2-1 Generals.

Oshawa found themselves in a bit of penalty trouble taking a bench penalty for too many men and then a hooking penalty by Thomas Stewart hooking penalty ending up on the wrong end of a 5-on-3. But a Big blocked shot from Ben Danford and then a crossbar helped the Gens kill it off. However, the Battalion found a way to level the game at two when Owen Van Steensel tapped home a failed wrap-around attempt by Alex Cajkovic. North Bay opened things up in things up in the third after Oster made a nice save Anthony Romani threw the puck on net and it was Van Steensel once again hopping on the rebound, flipping it over the netminder’s shoulder making 3-2 Battalion. The Battalion were not done there adding a fourth goal with a little over two minutes to go in the game, it was Van Steensel completing his hat trick with a quick wrister 4-2 North Bay. Adding insult to injury with less than a minute left it was Ty Nelson tapping in the empty netter making it 5-2 Battalion.

Giving back has always been important to my family and me. Starting The John Tavares Foundation was something we talked about for a long time, and is something I’m incredibly proud of. The foundation is centered on coming together to ensure the next generation has access to healthy foods, an understanding of the benefits of movement and increased availability of mental health resources. We hope to positively impact as many children and communities as possible to create a brighter future for everyone.

IN MEMORIAM On July 30th, the entire Oshawa Generals organization and family was devastated with the news of the passing of long-time scour Michael ‘Craiger’ Craig. Michael unfortunately lost his batter with a rare form of colorectal cancer. Craiger, as he was known around the rink, was a scout with the Generals’ organization for Eastern Ontario for more than 15 years. He scouted players such as Will Petschenig, Daniel Altshuller, Serron Noel, William Ennis, and current General Matthew Buckley – just to name a few. Michael was also a part of the 2014-2015 Memorial Cup Championship run. Throughout his career on and off the ice, Michael selflessly helped and assisted so many students, Special Olympic athletes, and OHL and minor hockey players – touching and enriching countless lives.

MIKE CRAIG 1976-2023

The entire Oshawa Generals organization continues to send their love to entire Craig family, his students, and all of the players who he crossed paths with.

BOOSTS OSHAWA GENERALS

Last season, the Oshawa Generals found themselves in a fight for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference until the final week of play. Fortunately enough, some timely wins meant the team squeezed into the postseason – by a single point. They were met with the formidable opponent, and league leaders, the Ottawa 67’s. A five game series saw the Generals bow out of the playoffs, ending the season sooner than many ever want it to end. Despite the early end, there was one diamond in all the rough – a sixth overall pick.

The Oshawa Generals used their sixth overall selection at the 2023 OHL Priority Selection to draft forward Owen Griffin from the York-Simcoe Express. The Markham, Ont., native joins now teammates Beckett Sennecke, Ben Danford, and Calum Ritchie as recent first round selections by the Generals. “Getting drafted by Oshawa was so exciting,” said Griffin. “The first thing I thought that day was ‘I just can’t wait to get to Oshawa and meet the rest of the team.” Well, it didn’t take long for Griffin to fit right in both on and off the ice. His skills on the ice were no surprise to anyone who followed him last year though. In the 2022-2023 season with the York-Simcoe Express, Griffin played 35 games, scored 51 goals, and added 43 assists for 94 points. His totals were good for 2.7 points per game. Ahead of the 2023 OHL Priority Selection, Griffin was described as one of the smartest and most skilled centers from this year’s draft class. He makes everyone around him better as he puts the puck in areas where they will be successful. His smarts and skill were on full display during the 2023 preseason schedule. Griffin finished exhibition play at the top of the team’s leaderboard with five points in four games. He also finished among top of the rookie scoring leaderboard. With a young, but exceedingly skilled group of players, the addition of Griffin to the lineup should mean the Generals are not only taking a step forward from last season, but one step closer to being true contenders among the best of the OHL.
