FROM OUR FRONT OFFICE to our fans Dear Generals fans, as we embark on yet another year of hockey, I’m excited for the outlook of our hockey club. This year, the expectations are higher as we continue our search for yet another championship. This season, we welcome many new and exciting young players along with many returnees, all coming together to make this year very promising. I wanted to thank all of our loyal fans for all their continued support and I look forward to seeing everyone around the rink soon!

Rocco Tullio President

I want to take this opportunity to welcome all of you to the 2023-2024 Oshawa Generals and the return of OHL hockey after a long summer. This season will be one of the most competitive campaigns we have had in several years. The Eastern Conference will be a dog fight, night in and night out. Facing the Ottawa 67’s in the first-round last season, showed us how much the game changes when the playoffs arrive. You must bring it every night. Nothing is given and everything will be earned. Make no mistake, there are no playoffs if you don’t take care of the regular season. With Derek Laxdal and his staff returning for there second season, they will be more comfortable in this environment and understand with your tremendous support comes expectations. The players playing under them for the second year should have no surprises on the demands and expectations on them. Our scouts have done another tremendous job in identifying talent for us and none more impressive then our 2023 first rounder, Owen Griffin who has begun to earn his way into the hearts of Gens fans, team mates and coaches for years to come. Our past is certainly something that all our supporters and everyone in our organization is very proud of. This season our entire focus right now is on the present. We want to have the best team possible to challenge for silverware again. Anything but your best won’t be good enough to make you a member of this Oshawa General’s was the message from training camp to now. This message remains the same. GO GENS GO !!!!!!

hockey ETIQUETTE While we score goals on the ice, our goal off the ice is to make sure all of #GensNation has the best game experience possible! We’ve made a list of some important reminders for all fans to keep in mind so that everyone’s night out is a special one.

1. WAIT FOR THE WHISTLE TO ENTER AND EXIT SEATING AREA

A lot can happen in a split second of hockey action – and we don’t want anyone to miss anything. Fans who move from their seat during play can block the view of an entire section of fans. Please wait until a whistle blows to make any move to and from your seats. QUICK TIP - There will always be extended stoppages following the first whistle after the 14:00 & 6:00 minute marks of a period (unless there is an icing, goal, or the start of a power play – just listen for the buzzer!)

2. BE MINDFUL OF THOSE AROUND YOU

Trust us, we know the games will have you at the edge of your seat, but if you lean too far forward, you’ll block the view of those around you. There isn’t a bad seat in the building, so sit back and enjoy the game!

3. KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PUCK

Things move quickly at our games, including flying sticks and pucks. Keep your eye on the puck at all times to avoid any potential injuries!

4. NON-SMOKING FACILITY

The Tribute Communities Centre is a non-smoking, no re-entry facility. Smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, on TCC property, is prohibited.

5. HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE

We don’t expect everyone to be best friends with the Petes’ fans – some things just don’t mix. But, we do think it’s pretty cool they’re coming to our building to enjoy the same great game we love. Please be aware of those sitting around you, including children and let the play on the ice do the talking. Abusive and inappropriate language will NOT be tolerated.

6. HAVE FUN

Get loud, cheer, and let your favourite team on the ice know you’re behind them – Afterall, hockey is the best sport out there.

AROUND THE chl AS OF THURSDAY, OCTOBER 12TH

HALIFAX MOOSEHEADS - QMJHL For those unfamiliar with the Mooseheads, the easiest comparison we could make is to refer to them as the London Knights of the QMJHL. Even in “down” years, the Mooseheads are still in the top half of their league standings and making noise. This season, the Mooseheads look strong out of the gate once again with a record of 5-2-0-0. Lead by Mathieu Cataford’s 10 points in five games up front, and Mathis Rousseau’ 1.20 goals against average in net, they’re outscoring opponents 24-15 across their seven games. The Moosheads are ranked second in the CHL.

CHARLOTTETOWN ISLANDERS - QMJHL Keeping with the Atlantic Division, the Charlottetown Islanders are using someone familiar to #GensNation to find some success. Claimed off of waivers before the beginning of the season, Carter Bickle has impressed on two occasions on Prince Edward Island. In his debut with the Islanders, Bickle played to a 0.968 save percentage. A few rough starts brought his numbers down until another impressive start against the Rimouski Oceanic. Bickle earned the win stopping 31/32 shots. The Islanders sit at 4-4-0-0 after eight games.

SASKATOON BLADES - WHL The Saskatoon Blades sent a message to the rest of the WHL that they’re ready to contend this season. The 5-2-0-0 Blades are about to get even stronger after they made a big splash with the Calgary Hitmen. The Blades acquired 19-year-old defenceman Grayden Siepmann from the Calgary Hitmen in exchange for 17-year-old defenceman Fraser Leonard, and three draft picks. Siepmann, a product of attended training camp with the NHL’s Boston Bruins this fall. He enjoyed a career season in 2022-23, recording 43 points (9G-34A) in 61 games. The Blades are ranked sixth in the CHL.

KAMLOOPS BLAZERS - WHL Last year’s Memorial Cup hosts are having a rough start to their 2023-2024 campaign. The Blazers have just one win in their first seven games, and it was over their provincial rival Vancouver Giants. Currently riding a four-game losing streak, it doesn’t get easier for the Blazers. Kamloop’s next game is on the road against the CHL’s number one ranked Portland Winterhawks. A bright spot for the Blazers has been Winnipeg Jets prospect Connor Levis. In five games, the winger has scored three goals and added four assists for seven points.

MISSISSAUGA STEELHEADS - OHL Suffering just one loss in their first five games, at the hands of your Oshawa Generals we may add, the Steelheads sit atop the Central Division. The 4-1-0-0 Steelheads are turning the heads of a lot of people to start the 2023-2024 season and it’s all thanks to one guy in net. Ryerson Leenders has been named the OHL Goaltender of the Week for back-to-back weeks and has been a brick wall in the crease. In four games, Leenders has played to an astonishing 1.00 goals against average and 0.967 save percentage PLUS two shutouts.

ERIE OTTERS - OHL The years of comfortable 50-win seasons for the Otters appear to be far in the rear-view mirror. After making taking Matthew Schaefer with first overall pick in the 2023 OHL Priority Selection, the Otters are still without a win after four games. The Otters have given up 24 goals in those four games while only scoring eight of their own. The team clearly saw a weakness and decided to fix it – and they fixed it in a big way. Earlier this week, the Otters went out and acquired former Team Canada goaltender and Sarnia Sting star Ben Gaudreau. Can the boost in net help them find a win?

game day PREVIEW The Oshawa Generals look to rebound at the Tribute Communities Centre against the North Bay Battalion after a tough trip to Barrie. The Battalion are making their lone visit of the season and like the Gens, are also coming off of a loss after falling to the Ottawa 67’s 4-2 Thursday night. North Bay currently holds a 3-2-1-1 record so far in the young season. The Gens return home after a big loss on the road. Oshawa are 3-3-0-0 early on and have yet to lose two in a row. The team is also looking to build on the home-winning streak they have built sitting at three wins in a row.

Last Meeting: The last time these two teams squared off it was the Battalion walking away with the upper hand. North Bay came to Oshawa and left with a 3-0 victory, all in the midst of a Generals’ eight-game losing streak late in the season before the team was able to right the ship and make the playoffs.

DOM DIVINCENTIIS

The Winnipeg Jets prospect has been lights out early on, sitting in second overall for both save percentage and goals against average. Despite carrying a 1.61 GAA and a .944 save percentage he currently holds a 3-20-0 record.

last game RECAP SATURDAY, OCTOBER 14

The Oshawa Generals made their first visit to the Sadlon Arena for a meeting with the Barrie Colts, and they left with a disappointing result. Searching for their first road win, the Gens took to the ice in Barrie and were no match for the explosive offense of the Colts, dropping the Saturday night contest 7-1. Oshawa’s goaltender, Noah Bender, made his OHL debut Saturday night and was quickly put to the test. Bender stopped the first shot he saw early in the first period but was beat over his shoulder by Roenick Jodoin on his second shot. The rest of the period, Oshawa struggled to set up any real offensive zone time until a late power play chance in the final two minutes of the period. With the man advantage, not only could the Generals finally set up in the zone, but they were also able to barrage Barrie’s goal Sam Hillebrandt – unfortunately for the visitors, they couldn’t beat him however. After 20 minutes, the Colts went into the room up 1-0, despite being outshot 12-9 by the Generals. The second period was a much different period. Just 19 seconds in, Cole Beaudoin put the Colts ahead 2-0. Just five minutes later, the Colts were able to double their lead to 4-0 thanks to goals from Riley Patterson and Oshawa native Kashawn Aitcheson. Another five minutes passed before the Colts made the Generals pay once again, this time from Beaudoin for his second of the night. During the offensive onslaught by the Colts, the Generals struggled greatly to clear the puck out of their own end, and only managed a single shot on net. Before the second period could end, the Generals did find some life. On a delayed penalty, a loose puck landed on captain Stuart Rolofs’ stick in the high slot. The Carp, Ont., native made no mistake and put Oshawa on the board with his 3rd of the season. After 40 minutes, the Colts lead 5-1 on the scoreboard and 21-17 on the shot clock.

Things only got worse for Oshawa in the third period, where they watched the Colts run down the clock and add to their lead. First, Eduard Sale scored his first OHL goal on the powerplay six minutes into the final frame. While the Colts continued to push, Bender managed to come up big on back to back breakaway chances, slamming the door on both Colt opportunities. Then, with less than two minutes to go in the game, Cole Beaudoin completed the hat trick, extending the Colts’ lead to 7-1. Beaudoin marks the second straight hat trick given up by the Generals in as many nights. At the final buzzer, Barrie took the game by a score of 7-1 while outshoot the Generals 29-26. Oshawa, still without a road victory, return home tomorrow night to take on the North Bay Battalion.

Giving back has always been important to my family and me. Starting The John Tavares Foundation was something we talked about for a long time, and is something I’m incredibly proud of. The foundation is centered on coming together to ensure the next generation has access to healthy foods, an understanding of the benefits of movement and increased availability of mental health resources. We hope to positively impact as many children and communities as possible to create a brighter future for everyone.

IN MEMORIAM On July 30th, the entire Oshawa Generals organization and family was devastated with the news of the passing of long-time scour Michael ‘Craiger’ Craig. Michael unfortunately lost his batter with a rare form of colorectal cancer. Craiger, as he was known around the rink, was a scout with the Generals’ organization for Eastern Ontario for more than 15 years. He scouted players such as Will Petschenig, Daniel Altshuller, Serron Noel, William Ennis, and current General Matthew Buckley – just to name a few. Michael was also a part of the 2014-2015 Memorial Cup Championship run. Throughout his career on and off the ice, Michael selflessly helped and assisted so many students, Special Olympic athletes, and OHL and minor hockey players – touching and enriching countless lives.

MIKE CRAIG 1976-2023

The entire Oshawa Generals organization continues to send their love to entire Craig family, his students, and all of the players who he crossed paths with.

BOOSTS OSHAWA GENERALS

Last season, the Oshawa Generals found themselves in a fight for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference until the final week of play. Fortunately enough, some timely wins meant the team squeezed into the postseason – by a single point. They were met with the formidable opponent, and league leaders, the Ottawa 67’s. A five game series saw the Generals bow out of the playoffs, ending the season sooner than many ever want it to end. Despite the early end, there was one diamond in all the rough – a sixth overall pick.

The Oshawa Generals used their sixth overall selection at the 2023 OHL Priority Selection to draft forward Owen Griffin from the York-Simcoe Express. The Markham, Ont., native joins now teammates Beckett Sennecke, Ben Danford, and Calum Ritchie as recent first round selections by the Generals. “Getting drafted by Oshawa was so exciting,” said Griffin. “The first thing I thought that day was ‘I just can’t wait to get to Oshawa and meet the rest of the team.” Well, it didn’t take long for Griffin to fit right in both on and off the ice. His skills on the ice were no surprise to anyone who followed him last year though. In the 2022-2023 season with the York-Simcoe Express, Griffin played 35 games, scored 51 goals, and added 43 assists for 94 points. His totals were good for 2.7 points per game. Ahead of the 2023 OHL Priority Selection, Griffin was described as one of the smartest and most skilled centers from this year’s draft class. He makes everyone around him better as he puts the puck in areas where they will be successful. His smarts and skill were on full display during the 2023 preseason schedule. Griffin finished exhibition play at the top of the team’s leaderboard with five points in four games. He also finished among top of the rookie scoring leaderboard. With a young, but exceedingly skilled group of players, the addition of Griffin to the lineup should mean the Generals are not only taking a step forward from last season, but one step closer to being true contenders among the best of the OHL.
