This year, the expectations are higher as we continue our search for yet another championship. This season, we welcome many new and exciting young players along with many returnees, all coming together to make this year very promising. I want to take this opportunity to welcome all of you to the 2023-2024 Oshawa Generals and the return of OHL hockey after a long summer. This season will be one of the most competitive campaigns we have had in several years. The Eastern Conference will be a dog fight, night in and night out. Facing the Ottawa 67’s in the first-round last season, showed us how much the game changes when the playoffs arrive. You must bring it every night. Nothing is given and everything will be earned. Make no mistake, there are no playoffs if you don’t take care of the regular season. With Derek Laxdal and his staff returning for there second season, they will be more comfortable in this environment and understand with your tremendous support comes expectations. The players playing under them for the second year should have no surprises on the demands and expectations on them. Our scouts have done another tremendous job in identifying talent for us and none more impressive then our 2023 first rounder, Owen Griffin who has begun to earn his way into the hearts of Gens fans, team mates and coaches for years to come. Our past is certainly something that all our supporters and everyone in our organization is very proud of. This season our entire focus right now is on the present. We want to have the best team possible to challenge for silverware again. Anything but your best won’t be good enough to make you a member of this Oshawa General’s was the message from training camp to now. This message remains the same. GO GENS GO !!!!!!

hockey ETIQUETTE While we score goals on the ice, our goal off the ice is to make sure all of #GensNation has the best game experience possible! We’ve made a list of some important reminders for all fans to keep in mind so that everyone’s night out is a special one.
1. WAIT FOR THE WHISTLE TO ENTER AND EXIT SEATING AREA
A lot can happen in a split second of hockey action – and we don’t want anyone to miss anything. Fans who move from their seat during play can block the view of an entire section of fans. Please wait until a whistle blows to make any move to and from your seats. QUICK TIP - There will always be extended stoppages following the first whistle after the 14:00 & 6:00 minute marks of a period (unless there is an icing, goal, or the start of a power play – just listen for the buzzer!)
2. BE MINDFUL OF THOSE AROUND YOU
Trust us, we know the games will have you at the edge of your seat, but if you lean too far forward, you’ll block the view of those around you. There isn’t a bad seat in the building, so sit back and enjoy the game!
3. KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PUCK
Things move quickly at our games, including flying sticks and pucks. Keep your eye on the puck at all times to avoid any potential injuries!
4. NON-SMOKING FACILITY
The Tribute Communities Centre is a non-smoking, no re-entry facility. Smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, on TCC property, is prohibited.
5. HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE
We don’t expect everyone to be best friends with the Petes’ fans – some things just don’t mix. But, we do think it’s pretty cool they’re coming to our building to enjoy the same great game we love. Please be aware of those sitting around you, including children and let the play on the ice do the talking. Abusive and inappropriate language will NOT be tolerated.
6. HAVE FUN
Get loud, cheer, and let your favourite team on the ice know you’re behind them – Afterall, hockey is the best sport out there.

VICTORIAVILLE TIGRES - QMJHL
The hottest team in the QMJHL coming into this weekend is the Victoriaville Tigres. Currently riding an eight game point streak, the Tigres sit atop the Western Conference standings with 20 points. The small town just east of Montreal, are making a big name for themselves after the first quarter of the season. In 15 games, the Tigres have scored 61 goals, and have a power play that’s clipping at just shy of 25 per cent. Justin Larose leads the way offensively with 21 points in 14 games, just three shy of his career best 24 – which took him all 68 games to achieve a season ago. PHOTO BY: ALEX GARNEAU
SAINT JOHN SEA DOGS - QMJHL A team moving in the opposite direction of the Tigres would be the 2022 Memorial Cup champion, Saint John Sea Dogs. A year removed from the Championship hangover season where the Sea Dogs finished 24-38-5-1, the Sea Dogs find themselves again near the bottom of the standings. After 14 games this year, Saint John shares last place honours with Val-d’Or at just 11 points. Their 4-7-1-2 record has a lot to do with their inability to score goals. They have the fewest goals for in the entire QMJHL, scoring at a rate of just 2.85 goals per game. Overage forward Peter Reynolds has been the diamond in the rough for Saint John. CALGARY HITMEN - WHL A six-game point streak for the Calgary Hitmen has seemingly saved them from being the WHL’s Eastern Conference basement dwellers. Before their current streak, the Hitmen sat in the bottom of the WHL standings with a record of 2-7-0-0. Since then, they’ve improved to 6-7-0-2 and given themselves some hope for this season. At 14 points, the Hitmen are only six points back of the top-seeded Moose Jaw Warriors and have put five points between themselves and their Alberta counterparts – the last place Edmonton Oil Kings. Calgary’s bread and butter comes from the offensive output of Sean Tschigerl. The Anaheim Ducks prospect has 18 points in 13 games so far this season. PHOTO BY: CALGARY HITMEN TWITTER
SPOKANE CHIEFS - WHL One of two teams in the WHL to sit .500 are the Spokane Chiefs. After 12 games the Chiefs are 5-5-2-0 and have 12 points, good enough for just 9th in the WHL’s Wester Conference and last place in the U.S. Division. The Chiefs do however have a chance to climb the standings this weekend, with matchups against division rivals Seattle Thunderbirds and TriCity Americans. Both teams are within four points or less of the Chiefs. While Spokane may be struggling to consistently find wins, their power play has been something many other teams wish they had. Clipping at a success rate of almost 29 per cent, the Chiefs own the top power play in their division, and third best in the Western Conference. PHOTO BY: LARRY BRUNT
NIAGARA ICEDOGS - OHL The team shrouded by off-ice drama and controversies may have finally started to figure things out on the ice. The Niagara IceDogs have been the OHL’s punching bag the last few seasons, with some pretty dismal records. In 2022, the IceDogs finished 22-42-3-1, only to get worse the following season. Last year, Niagara only managed to win 12 games, and finished with a record of 12-47-8-1. 12 games into the 2023-2024 season, the IceDogs currently have a record of 3-4-41 giving them 11 points. While the wins are flowing down the pipeline just yet, at least they’re showing some compete. A goal differential of just -7 haunts the Dogs so far this year, a stat that was a horrifying -158 a season ago. Their current five game point streak can be attributed to Mathieu Paris, who has 12 points in 12 games and leads the team in goals, assists and points. PHOTO BY: NATASHA CORFIELD
SAGINAW SPIRIT - OHL The hosts of this season’s Memorial Cup Championship, presented by Dow, find themselves in a spot they probably didn’t imagine they’d be in. The Saginaw Spirit enter the weekend out of a playoff spot, sitting 9th in the Western Conference with just nine points after 11 games. The 4-6-0-1 Spirit are riding a three-game winless streak and are just two points up on the OHL’s worst, Windsor Spitfires. Now, while the Spirit aren’t getting the results they want right now, it’s no doubt GM Dave Drinkill has some plans in the works. He’s already worked on tweaking what he hopes to be a championship roster, bringing in former Flint Firebird Ethan Hayes in a trade earlier this week. The positive signs are there in Saginaw as well. The Spirit have the top power play and penalty kill in the entire OHL at 34.4 and 92.9 per cent respectively. PHOTO BY: ERIC YOUNG

The 18-year-old has been consistent at the back end so far this season, the defenceman from Toronto is tied for the team lead in assists with nine helpers. The d-man has also found the back of the net one time and with his movement up the powerplay, he will look to build on his early success.
game day PREVIEW After snapping a three-game losing streak against the Peterborough Petes the Oshawa Generals host the Brantford Bulldogs in their third matchup of the season. It took overtime and a Beckett Sennecke hat trick for the Gens to snap their losing streak Friday night beating the Peterborough Petes 3-2. Jacob Oster has been riding high making 86 saves in his last two games. The Brantford Bulldogs come to the Tribute Communities Centre riding a three-game losing streak, falling 5-1 to the Barrie Colts, 5-4 to the Guelph Storm in a shootout, and 3-2 to the London Knights in overtime.
Last Meeting: For the third time this season these two teams will face off, and so far this season the Bulldogs have come out on top the previous two times. It was country night the last time these two squared off and after Rasmus Kumpulainen opened the scoring it would be all Bulldogs as they rattled off five unanswered goals. On nine shots the Bulldogs were able to get 4 goals passed Oster chasing him from the net, but Brantford were unable to get anything passed Noah Bender.

The Oshawa Generals snap a three-game losing streak as Beckett Sennecke completes his hat trick on the overtime goal as the Gens win 3-2 over the Peterborough Petes. After some scrappy play behind the Petes’ net Rasmus Kumpulainen found Sennecke in front of the net and the winger made no mistake burying his third of the game and the decisive goal. Jacob Oster picked up second star of the game making 38 saves in the win and a combined 86 saves in the home-and-home against the Petes. It was the Gens opening the scoring, after a big save by Oster the puck went to Luca Marrelli who passed it up the ice to Beckett Sennecke. The winger drove the net beating the defenceman and outwaiting Petes’ goalie Zach Bowen to make it 1-0 Generals. Oster picked up his first point of the season and second in the OHL with an assist on the goal.
In the second it was Sennecke once again, after a bad line change by the Petes, Kumpulainen picked up the puck and found Sennecke, the winger took the pass made a nice move to beat the goalie and slid the puck into the back of the net making it 2-0 Gens. Less than a minute later it was Owen Beck finding the back of the net, after the Generals turned the puck over behind their own net, Braydon McCallum found Beck in the slot, and the centre made it 2-1 Oshawa. Just over three minutes into the third period the Petes got a good scoring chance when Beck made a nice move at the line to get past one defenceman before keeping and shooting, but it was Oster with arguably his nicest save of the night throwing out his glove and robbing the Petes of a goal. Later in the third, it was Peterborough tying the game at two when a point shot from Cam Gauvreau took a crazy deflection in front of the net and fell right on the stick of Sam McCue for an easy tap-in.

IN MEMORIAM On July 30th, the entire Oshawa Generals organization and family was devastated with the news of the passing of long-time scour Michael ‘Craiger’ Craig. Michael unfortunately lost his batter with a rare form of colorectal cancer. Craiger, as he was known around the rink, was a scout with the Generals’ organization for Eastern Ontario for more than 15 years. He scouted players such as Will Petschenig, Daniel Altshuller, Serron Noel, William Ennis, and current General Matthew Buckley – just to name a few. Michael was also a part of the 2014-2015 Memorial Cup Championship run. Throughout his career on and off the ice, Michael selflessly helped and assisted so many students, Special Olympic athletes, and OHL and minor hockey players – touching and enriching countless lives.

Warrant Officer Greg Scruton is a local member of the Durham region, he enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces in January 2000. Warrant Officer Scruton Deployed on an expeditionary mission to Afghanistan in 2008 as part of Operation Athena with the Provincial Reconstruction Teams helping with the different regions build infrastructure to help with a better the way of life for the people within the country and then with Operation Enduring Freedom working with the United States Army in the Counter Improvised Explosives Device teams (CIED) by training other nations in Counter Improvised Explosives and looking for explosive devices that were planted in the road sides making it safer for military and civilian traffic to use roads without being destroyed. He has also partaken in Domestic Operations within Canada helping with the G8 & G20 summits, Royal Visits from the Prince and Princess of Wales Prince William and Princess Kate, operation Lentis for the floods in Ottawa and Quebec and oversaw local members providing civil aid to the area along the St. Lawrence River area during the Covid 19 brake out. At present Warrant Officer Scruton is the Ontario Regiments Technical Quartermaster and, also holding a Position with in the 33 Combat brigade working with the G7 Training group where he oversees the conduct of the running of the Army courses in southern Ontario from Oshawa to Cornwall.

NAMED TO TEAM CANADA FOR U17s Generals forward Owen Griffin, and goaltending prospect Isaac Gravelle, have been named to Team Canada for the 2023 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
The 2023 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, taking place in Charlottetown and Summerside, PEI., runs from November 2nd to November 11th and will once again feature two teams from Canada – Team Canada Red and Team Canada White. Griffin, the 5’10 Markham, Ont., native was selected in the first round, sixth overall by the Generals at the 2023 OHL Priority Selection. In seven games this season, Griffin is still searching for his first OHL point – but has been all over the ice in each of the Generals games. Despite not finding the finish he is hoping for, Griffin has been winning puck battles deep on the forecheck, and he opened up space for himself and his teammates thanks to his speed and stick-handling skills. GensNation did get to see flashes of his potential throughout the preseason when he scored two goals and three assists over four games. Last season, Griffin scored 94 points in just 35 games by way of 51 goals and 43 assists for the York SimcoeExpress. Gravelle, the goaltender from Fenwick, Ont., was taken in the second round by the Generals at the same 2023 OHL Priority Selection. In five games with the GOJHL’s Port Colbourne Sailors, Gravelle has played to a record of 2-1-2, with a strong 2.95 goals against average and .921 save percentage. Gravelle showed a lot of promise at the Generals’ recent summer training camp but was ultimately beaten out for the backup position by 2006-born Noah Bender. At only 16 years old, Gravelle is a name a lot of Generals’ fans should remember over the next few years, as he continues to develop into a star goaltender. Griffin and Gravelle join current Generals Calum Ritchie, Beckett Sennecke, Ben Danford, and David Bedkowski as recent Generals to appear at the tournament for Hockey Canada. Hosted on Prince Edward Island, the 2023 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge begins on November 2nd and will conclude with the Gold Medal game on November 11th.
