I want to take this opportunity to welcome all of you to the 2023-2024 Oshawa Generals and the return of OHL hockey after a long summer. This season will be one of the most competitive campaigns we have had in several years. The Eastern Conference will be a dog fight, night in and night out. Facing the Ottawa 67’s in the first-round last season, showed us how much the game changes when the playoffs arrive. You must bring it every night. Nothing is given and everything will be earned. Make no mistake, there are no playoffs if you don’t take care of the regular season. With Derek Laxdal and his staff returning for there second season, they will be more comfortable in this environment and understand with your tremendous support comes expectations. The players playing under them for the second year should have no surprises on the demands and expectations on them. Our scouts have done another tremendous job in identifying talent for us and none more impressive then our 2023 first rounder, Owen Griffin who has begun to earn his way into the hearts of Gens fans, team mates and coaches for years to come. Our past is certainly something that all our supporters and everyone in our organization is very proud of. This season our entire focus right now is on the present. We want to have the best team possible to challenge for silverware again. Anything but your best won’t be good enough to make you a member of this Oshawa General’s was the message from training camp to now. This message remains the same. GO GENS GO !!!!!!

hockey ETIQUETTE While we score goals on the ice, our goal off the ice is to make sure all of #GensNation has the best game experience possible! We’ve made a list of some important reminders for all fans to keep in mind so that everyone’s night out is a special one.
1. WAIT FOR THE WHISTLE TO ENTER AND EXIT SEATING AREA
A lot can happen in a split second of hockey action – and we don’t want anyone to miss anything. Fans who move from their seat during play can block the view of an entire section of fans. Please wait until a whistle blows to make any move to and from your seats. QUICK TIP - There will always be extended stoppages following the first whistle after the 14:00 & 6:00 minute marks of a period (unless there is an icing, goal, or the start of a power play – just listen for the buzzer!)
2. BE MINDFUL OF THOSE AROUND YOU
Trust us, we know the games will have you at the edge of your seat, but if you lean too far forward, you’ll block the view of those around you. There isn’t a bad seat in the building, so sit back and enjoy the game!
3. KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PUCK
Things move quickly at our games, including flying sticks and pucks. Keep your eye on the puck at all times to avoid any potential injuries!
4. NON-SMOKING FACILITY
The Tribute Communities Centre is a non-smoking, no re-entry facility. Smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, on TCC property, is prohibited.
5. HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE
We don’t expect everyone to be best friends with the Petes’ fans – some things just don’t mix. But, we do think it’s pretty cool they’re coming to our building to enjoy the same great game we love. Please be aware of those sitting around you, including children and let the play on the ice do the talking. Abusive and inappropriate language will NOT be tolerated.

SHERBROOKE PHOENIX - QMJHL
A year removed from their 50-win season, the Sherbrooke Phoenix are near the top of the Western Conference standings yet again. After 17 games, the Phoenix are 10-6-0-1 and third in the conference with 21 points. They’ve cooled off a bit in their last 10 games, with just a 6-40-0 record over that stretch but are most recently coming off a big 7-3 win over the Saint John Sea Dogs. The key to their success so far has been goaltender Samuel St-Hilaire. In 12 games, the 04-born netminder leagues the QMJHL in goals against average at just 1.90. Hi save percentage of .930 is also in the top-three, behind the Rouyn-Norand Huskies’ William Rousseau and Halifax’s Mathis Rousseau. CAPE BRETON EAGLES - QMJHL A team moving in the opposite direction of the Tigres would be the 2022 Memorial Cup champion, Saint John Sea Dogs. A year removed from the Championship hangover season where the Sea Dogs finished 24-38-5-1, the Sea Dogs find themselves again near the bottom of the standings. After 14 games this year, Saint John shares last place honours with Val-d’Or at just 11 points. Their 4-7-1-2 record has a lot to do with their inability to score goals. They have the fewest goals for in the entire QMJHL, scoring at a rate of just 2.85 goals per game. Overage forward Peter Reynolds has been the diamond in the rough for Saint John. EVERETT SILVERTIPS - WHL Known as one of the top franchises in the WHL, the Everett Silvertips find themselves in the middle of the Western Conference and U.S. Division – but not by much. After 17 games, the Silvertips are 9-7-1-0 with 19 points, just four points behind the division leading Portland Winterhawks and five back of the league-leading Prince George Cougars. The Silvertips have dropped their last two games to the Swift Current Broncos and Medicine Hat Tigers 4-1. Before the back-to-back losses, they did go 4-0-1-0. The Silvertips are led by import forward, Dominik Rymon. The Czechia native has nine goals and 11 assists for 20 points in 17 games, four points more than the next closest Silvertip. TRI-CITY AMERICANS - WHL Another U.S. Division staple, the Tri City Americans, are rolling the last week in the WHL. The Americans have won three-in-a-row and have points in seven of their last 10 games played. On their current streak, the Americans have taken down the Vancouver Giants, Spokane Chiefs, and Kelowna Rockets, outscoring opponents 12-7. Things are likely to get even better for the Americans, as they’re next two games are also in the friendly confines of the Toyota Centre. In nine games so far at home, the Americans are 7-1-0-1, grabbing 15 of a possible 18 points. Offense comes in waves for the Americans as well, as they have five skaters with double-digit points. The group of five are led by Jordan Gavin’s 16 points. The Surrey, B.C., native has six goals and 10 assists in 16 games. PHOTO BY: JOHN KELLER
BARRIE COLTS - OHL A hot start by the Barrie Colts must feel like ages ago for fans in Barrie. After starting the season 3-1-0-0, the Central Division Colts are a disappointing 3-7-0-0 since and just 6-8-0-0 overall on the year. Caught in their slump, the Colts have dropped back-to-back games, 4-2 to the Frontenacs and most recently an 8-3 drubbing at the hands of the Ottawa 67’s. Despite their record, the Colts have shown they can compete with some of the top teams this year, as showcased when they beat the Mississauga Steelheads 6-1. The Colts find most of their offense through centre, Beau Jelsma. In 14 games, the Brownsville, Ont., native has 15 points, via five goals and 10 assists. They’re getting help from their blueline as well, as overage defenseman Connor Punnett has put up 13 points of his own in 14 games. PHOTO BY: COLLIN JENNINGS
KITCHENER RANGERS - OHL Last season, they salvaged what should have been a runaway season with an 8th seed finish, and a massive first round upset against the Windsor Spitfires. This season, the Kitchener Rangers are at the top of the OHL looking down. The Rangers have a record of 12-5-0-0 after 17 games. Usually this is where we tell you where their success comes from, but honestly, for the Rangers it comes from everywhere. Currently, the top three scorers in the OHL are all Kitchener Rangers, led by Carson Rehkopf’s 32 points in 17 games. Matthew Sop’s 28 points and defenceman Hunter Brzustewicz 28 points round out the top three. Overall, the Rangers have scored a league-high 82 goals in 17 games, eight more than the Soo Greyhound’s 74 goals. On the verge of his 100th Ontario Hockey League Game Oster has been a staple in the Oshawa Generals creaseplaying in 39 of the 49 games since arriving from the Guelph Storm. This season Oster is posting a .904 save percentage and a 3.18 goals against average.
game day PREVIEW After a week with no games the Oshawa Generals return to the Tribute Communities Centre where they will take on rivals the Peterborough Petes. It is Nickelodeon Day in Oshawa as the Generals will don Paw Patrol Jerseys that will later be auctioned off in support of the Durham Children’s Aid Foundation. Chase will be on the case and joined by Skye in the concourse. Jacob Oster is eyeing his 100th game in the Ontario Hockey League, having played 60 games with Gulph Storm and 39 so far with the Oshawa Generals. The Gens come into this one after a week-long break with some ground to make up. Oshawa sits last in the East Division and second last in the Eastern Conference. Peterborough is hot. Carrying a three-game win streak the Petes are sitting in first place both in the division and the conference.
Last Meeting: It took overtime for the Generals to take down the Petes last time out as Beckett Sennecke completed a hat trick to win the game. After scoring two goals in the first half of the game the Gens let the lead slip from their grasp as Peterborough tied it up part way through the third. But it was all for not as just a minute and a half into overtime Sennecke buried a one-timer that sent the fans home happy as Oshawa won 3-2.

After tying the game up in the last two minutes of play on Ryder McIntyre’s second goal of the season the Gens were unable to solve Mason Vaccari in the shootout.
To start the third period the Gens found themselves on the better side of a 5-on-3 and after the Frontenacs managed to kill the first one off Torrance found Ritchie who buried his first of the season cutting the lead to 3-2.
It took almost half of the first period for either team to get on the score sheet, but it was Kingston opening the scoring. Maddox Callens got the puck just outside the Oshawa zone skated in and wristed his first of the season past Oster. Kingston doubled their lead making it 2-0 early in the second when crossed the blue line and made a nice toe drag before sliding it to Matthew Soto who went from backhand to forehand, then snapped it past Oster. The Generals would answer back, Calum Ritchie got the puck in the corner and passed it across the ice to Luke Torrance, the winger one-touch passed it to Rolofs who took the monkey off his back finishing the tic-tac-toe play making it 2-1 Kingston. The Frontenacs would restore their two-goal lead a short while later when Gage Hayes took a cross-ice
It was only 20 seconds later that Kingston would respond as Soto found himself on the doorstep managing to squeeze the puck through Oster for his second of the game making it 4-2 Frontenacs. Two minutes later the Generals were able to cut the lead in half. Dylan Roobroeck found Torrance sitting at the back door, the winger made no mistakes shooting the puck into the top corner for his third point of the night, 4-3 Kingston. Then with just under two minutes to go in regulation, the Generals would tie things up, it was Luca D’Amato finding a seam to Ben Danford who tapped it out front to McIntyre for an easy goal.

IN MEMORIAM On July 30th, the entire Oshawa Generals organization and family was devastated with the news of the passing of long-time scout Michael ‘Craiger’ Craig. Michael unfortunately lost his battle with a rare form of colorectal cancer. Craiger, as he was known around the rink, was a scout with the Generals’ organization for Eastern Ontario for more than 15 years. He scouted players such as Will Petschenig, Daniel Altshuller, Serron Noel, William Ennis, and current General Matthew Buckley – just to name a few. Michael was also a part of the 2014-2015 Memorial Cup Championship run. Throughout his career on and off the ice, Michael selflessly helped and assisted so many students, Special Olympic athletes, OHL and minor hockey players – touching and enriching countless lives.

LIVES ON IN THE ONTARIO HOCKEY LEAGUE BY: JOELLE WOOD
On this November 11, the Ontario Hockey League honours the service of men and women who served our country, those we have lost, and those who continue to protect our freedoms. As we recognize those who have defended our great nation, now and throughout history, the OHL’s most prestigious individual award continues to honour Albert “Red” Tilson. Albert Tilson (1924-1944), nicknamed “Red” for his vibrant hair, was a former Oshawa Generals player killed in service during World War II. He played two seasons for the Generals beginning with the 1941-42 season, and won the J. Ross Robertson Cup as league champion both years. Tilson won the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy in the 1942-43 season as the league’s top scorer, registering 19 goals, 38 assists, and 57 points in 22 games. He had a promising professional hockey career ahead of him, but instead, Tilson enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces on May 27, 1943 to help defend our country. Serving as a Lance Corporal in the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada, Tilson was killed in action in the Netherlands on October 27, 1944 at the young age of 20. “Today we honour the brave men and women in uniform, past and present, who serve and protect our country,” said OHL Commissioner David Branch. “The Ontario Hockey League and the hockey community will forever be indebted to those who have paid the supreme sacrifice for our freedoms. As we continue to honour the great legacy of Red Tilson in our league, it is important that we continue to pay tribute to all who have served our country just like him, and for all they have done to keep us safe.” Donated by The Globe and Mail and first presented in 1945, the Red Tilson Trophy continues to honour his legacy as the League’s most prestigious individual award presented annually to the OHL’s Most Oustanding Player. “For our organization and league to have a person like Red Tilson connected to it, is very special. Maybe no more so then this time of year, thinking of him laying down his life for others to live the life we have today. Whenever I bring in any prospect, I always make a note to educate the player and family on who Red was,” said Oshawa Generals Vice-President and General Manager, Roger Hunt. Tilson’s No. 9 uniform was retired by the Generals on November 12, 2006, a ceremony that included Gus Leonard, who played hockey with Tilson in the armed forces, and Bob Attersley who was the Generals’ first ever recipient of the Red Tilson Trophy. “For Red Tilson’s number 9 to be retired speaks volumes on what he represents as an Oshawa General. The very Memorial Cup is in honour of his memory and the many thousands more who are active or former soldiers serving Canada,” added Hunt. Now immortalized on the Red Tilson Trophy, some of the greatest junior players to ever play in the Ontario Hockey League have had the honour to be recognized in his name.

Sergeant Amanda Crawford enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces at the age of 17, in June 2001, with 23 Service Battalion, a Reserve Base, in Hamilton, Ontario. In 2006, she decided to pursue the Military as a full time career, and joined the Regular Force, where she was first posted to Toronto. She has had many postings over the years, including Kingston, Ottawa and Petawawa. While in Petawawa, she deployed to Sierra Leone in 2014, as part of Operation Sirona. Operation Sirona was the military component of the Canadian Government’s contribution to fighting the Ebola out break in West Africa. Canadian Armed Forces personnel augmented the efforts undertaken by the United Kingdom to combat the spread of the Ebola virus in Sierra Leone. The mission ended in June 2015. Sgt Crawford remained in Sierra Leone for two rotations during 2014-2015. She has also taken part in many training exercises within Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. At present, Sergeant Crawford is the Chief Human Resources Administrator at the Ontario Regiment here in Oshawa, where she and her family plan to remain as her final posting. Sergeant Crawford is engaged to be married to Colleen Ranger. They are the proud parents of Alyssa, Adam, Beau and Nate.

NAMED TO TEAM CANADA FOR U17s Generals forward Owen Griffin, and goaltending prospect Isaac Gravelle, have been named to Team Canada for the 2023 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
The 2023 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, taking place in Charlottetown and Summerside, PEI., runs from November 2nd to November 11th and will once again feature two teams from Canada – Team Canada Red and Team Canada White. Griffin, the 5’10 Markham, Ont., native was selected in the first round, sixth overall by the Generals at the 2023 OHL Priority Selection. In seven games this season, Griffin is still searching for his first OHL point – but has been all over the ice in each of the Generals games. Despite not finding the finish he is hoping for, Griffin has been winning puck battles deep on the forecheck, and he opened up space for himself and his teammates thanks to his speed and stick-handling skills. GensNation did get to see flashes of his potential throughout the preseason when he scored two goals and three assists over four games. Last season, Griffin scored 94 points in just 35 games by way of 51 goals and 43 assists for the York SimcoeExpress. Gravelle, the goaltender from Fenwick, Ont., was taken in the second round by the Generals at the same 2023 OHL Priority Selection. In five games with the GOJHL’s Port Colbourne Sailors, Gravelle has played to a record of 2-1-2, with a strong 2.95 goals against average and .921 save percentage. Gravelle showed a lot of promise at the Generals’ recent summer training camp but was ultimately beaten out for the backup position by 2006-born Noah Bender. At only 16 years old, Gravelle is a name a lot of Generals’ fans should remember over the next few years, as he continues to develop into a star goaltender. Griffin and Gravelle join current Generals Calum Ritchie, Beckett Sennecke, Ben Danford, and David Bedkowski as recent Generals to appear at the tournament for Hockey Canada. Hosted on Prince Edward Island, the 2023 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge begins on November 2nd and will conclude with the Gold Medal game on November 11th.
