FROM OUR FRONT OFFICE to our fans Dear Generals fans, as we embark on yet another year of hockey, I’m excited for the outlook of our hockey club. This year, the expectations are higher as we continue our search for yet another championship. This season, we welcome many new and exciting young players along with many returnees, all coming together to make this year very promising. I wanted to thank all of our loyal fans for all their continued support and I look forward to seeing everyone around the rink soon!

Rocco Tullio President

I want to take this opportunity to welcome all of you to the 2023-2024 Oshawa Generals and the return of OHL hockey after a long summer. This season will be one of the most competitive campaigns we have had in several years. The Eastern Conference will be a dog fight, night in and night out. Facing the Ottawa 67’s in the first-round last season, showed us how much the game changes when the playoffs arrive. You must bring it every night. Nothing is given and everything will be earned. Make no mistake, there are no playoffs if you don’t take care of the regular season. With Derek Laxdal and his staff returning for there second season, they will be more comfortable in this environment and understand with your tremendous support comes expectations. The players playing under them for the second year should have no surprises on the demands and expectations on them. Our scouts have done another tremendous job in identifying talent for us and none more impressive then our 2023 first rounder, Owen Griffin who has begun to earn his way into the hearts of Gens fans, team mates and coaches for years to come. Our past is certainly something that all our supporters and everyone in our organization is very proud of. This season our entire focus right now is on the present. We want to have the best team possible to challenge for silverware again. Anything but your best won’t be good enough to make you a member of this Oshawa General’s was the message from training camp to now. This message remains the same. GO GENS GO !!!!!!

Roger Hunt

Vice President & General Manager

hockey ETIQUETTE While we score goals on the ice, our goal off the ice is to make sure all of #GensNation has the best game experience possible! We’ve made a list of some important reminders for all fans to keep in mind so that everyone’s night out is a special one.

1. WAIT FOR THE WHISTLE TO ENTER AND EXIT SEATING AREA

A lot can happen in a split second of hockey action – and we don’t want anyone to miss anything. Fans who move from their seat during play can block the view of an entire section of fans. Please wait until a whistle blows to make any move to and from your seats. QUICK TIP - There will always be extended stoppages following the first whistle after the 14:00 & 6:00 minute marks of a period (unless there is an icing, goal, or the start of a power play – just listen for the buzzer!)

2. BE MINDFUL OF THOSE AROUND YOU

Trust us, we know the games will have you at the edge of your seat, but if you lean too far forward, you’ll block the view of those around you. There isn’t a bad seat in the building, so sit back and enjoy the game!

3. KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PUCK

Things move quickly at our games, including flying sticks and pucks. Keep your eye on the puck at all times to avoid any potential injuries!

4. NON-SMOKING FACILITY

The Tribute Communities Centre is a non-smoking, no re-entry facility. Smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, on TCC property, is prohibited.

5. HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE

We don’t expect everyone to be best friends with the Petes’ fans – some things just don’t mix. But, we do think it’s pretty cool they’re coming to our building to enjoy the same great game we love. Please be aware of those sitting around you, including children and let the play on the ice do the talking. Abusive and inappropriate language will NOT be tolerated.

6. HAVE FUN

Get loud, cheer, and let your favourite team on the ice know you’re behind them – Afterall, hockey is the best sport out there.

AROUND THE ohl AS OF WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 24TH

OTTAWA 67’s - EASTERN DIVISION Four points behind the generals, the Ottawa 67’s are placed third in the Eastern Division and 12th overall, tied with Erie at 44 points. With Kingston trailing just three points behind, the 67’s are hoping to enter this coming weekend hot and leave with an even larger gap between the two, also catching up to the Generals. Defenceman Henry Mews was named assistant captain for team white at the 2024 Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game where he will play Wednesday evening. The 67’s are pairing up with Telus for hosting the second-annual EmpowHER Hockey Fest, to show their support for young girl’s hockey. Aged between eight and 13, they will have the opportunity to learn from their favourite 67’s players, and some of their female hockey heroes. PHOTO BY: JACKIE PEREZ

NIAGARA ICEDOGS CENTRAL DIVISION Niagara holds the last-place spot in their Division and is tied with Winsdor at 30 points for the last spot in the overall standings. Since the new year, the IceDogs have earned three wins and fell to four losses. However, their last win was against eighth place North Bay, which will ensure to carry them to their next faceoffs in higher spirits. Goaltender Charlie Robertson defeated his former team as he made 34 saves of 36 shots. Niagara has three matchups the next three days, against Brantford, Kingston and Ottawa, who each have at least 11 points on the upper hand. If they play as they did against North Bay, perhaps Niagara won’t be deemed as dead last in the standings, but this weekend has yet to unravel what’s to come. PHOTO BY: NIAGARA ICEDOGS

ERIE OTTERS - MIDWEST DIVISION The Erie Otters currently sit fifth in the midwestern division and 13th overall in the OHL standings. As a middle-of-thepack group, the Otters own 44 points, tying with Ottawa and just one point behind Owen Sound. Last week, the Otters fell short to a top Eastern Conference North Bay Battalion 4-3, despite the deposits of two late power-play goals. That loss did not concern the Otters, as last Friday they earned a huge 7-3 victory over the top team in the Eastern Conference, Sudbury. With the win, Erie swept the season series with the Wolves for the first time since 2019. PHOTO BY: ERIE OTTERS

SAGINAW SPIRIT WEST DIVISION Saginaw Spirit is currently on a four-game win streak and aims to continue this coming weekend. Saginaw is holding 51 points in the Western Division, a whole 20 points ahead of Flint who sits behind them. In overall standings, the Spirit is comfortably placed sixth, three points behind Kitchener and eight points ahead of Guelph. With seven wins in 2024, the only two games Saginaw has lost have been against Oshawa and London. This weekend, they meet PHOTO BY: DAVID PICKERING

player to watch JACOB OSTER

The Oshawa Generals’ netminder is coming off his second shutout of the season, he sits in second place for goals against average with 2.80 in the OHL and fourth in wins for goalies having won 19 games.

game day PREVIEW The Oshawa Generals look to continue their strong play on home ice as they take on the Erie Otters. Oshawa have won their last three home games by a combined score of 20-3; overall, the team is 7-3-0-0 in their last 10 games. The Generals are in second place in the East Division, just four points back of the Brantford Bulldogs. The Otters are making their lone trip of the 2023-24 season to the Tribute Communities Centre sitting in last place in the Midwest Division with a record of 5-5-0-0 record over their last 10 games.

Last Meeting: It is the first time these teams have squared off this season, but it was the Generals coming out victorious last season beating the Otters 4-0 last time out. Oshawa got things going early in the first added a pair in the second and finished things off with their fourth of the game. Jacob Oster picked up his third shutout of the season stopping all 31 shots that he faced while Dylan Roobroeck scored his 10th of the year.

player to watch

MATTHEW SCHAEFER

The first overall pick in the last OHL draft, Schaefer is settling in nicely picking up assists in 11 of his last 16 games. The Stoney Creek, Ont., native ranks fourth amongst rookie defencemen in scoring with two goals and 11 assists on the year.

last game RECAP SUNDAY, JANUARY 21

The Oshawa Generals took down the Windsor Spitfires 5-0 as Jacob Oster picked up his second shutout of the season. Oster stopped 27 of the 27 shots that he faced on the way to victory while the Gens got goals from five different goal-scorers. After killing a penalty in the first period, the Gens would open the scoring as Luca Marrelli made a nice pass finding Tristan Delisle sitting all alone and the winger snapped home his fifth of the season making it 1-0 Oshawa. It was the Spitfires driving play in the second period including a couple of golden opportunities including a breakaway that beat Oster but not the post. But it was Oshawa expanding their lead on a 2-on-0 as Dylan Roobroeck carried it in before sliding it to Matthew Buckley who lifted it over Max Donoso for a 2-0 Gens lead. The Generals were on the powerplay to start the third and they would add to their lead as Luke Torrance put the puck on net creating a rebound for Rasmus Kumpulainen to tap through the Windsor netminder, making it 3-0 Oshawa. Later in the period, it was the Gens captain Stuart Rolofs getting in on the fun when Connor Lockhart won the faceoff straight to him, snapping it past Donoso for a 4-0 lead. Oshawa was not done there, adding to their total on the powerplay, it was Luca Marrelli dancing around a couple of Spitfires players and then finding Ritchie for an easy tap-in goal making it a 5-0 Gens lead.

Giving back has always been important to my family and me. Starting The John Tavares Foundation was something we talked about for a long time, and is something I’m incredibly proud of. The foundation is centered on coming together to ensure the next generation has access to healthy foods, an understanding of the benefits of movement and increased availability of mental health resources. We hope to positively impact as many children and communities as possible to create a brighter future for everyone.

IN MEMORIAM On July 30th, the entire Oshawa Generals organization and family was devastated with the news of the passing of long-time scout Michael ‘Craiger’ Craig. Michael unfortunately lost his battle with a rare form of colorectal cancer. Craiger, as he was known around the rink, was a scout with the Generals’ organization for Eastern Ontario for more than 15 years. He scouted players such as Will Petschenig, Daniel Altshuller, Serron Noel, William Ennis, and current General Matthew Buckley – just to name a few. Michael was also a part of the 2014-2015 Memorial Cup Championship run. Throughout his career on and off the ice, Michael selflessly helped and assisted so many students, Special Olympic athletes, OHL and minor hockey players – touching and enriching countless lives.

MIKE CRAIG 1976-2023

The entire Oshawa Generals organization continues to send their love to entire Craig family, his students, and all of the players who he crossed paths with.

trio of generals NAMED TO 2024 chl/nhl top prospects game

In partnership with the Ontario Hockey League and Canadian Hockey League, the Oshawa Generals are proud to announce Generals forward Beckett Sennecke, and Generals defencemen Ben Danford and Luca Marrelli have been named to the 2024 Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game on January 24th, in Moncton., N.B. In the preliminary NHL Central Scouting rankings back in October, Sennecke received an ‘A’ rating (projecting to be a first-round selection), while Danford and Marrelli received a ‘B’ rating (projecting a 2nd/3rd-round selection).

Sennecke, the Toronto, Ont., native was one of the Generals’ first-round picks in the 2022 OHL Priority Selection, taken eighth overall. In his rookie season a year ago, Sennecke finished second in league rookie scoring, behind only exceptional status player Michael Misa of the Saginaw Spirit.

Danford, from Madoc, Ont., was the Generals’ second first-round pick in the 2022 draft, after receiving a compensatory pick for a previous non-committed pick. Danford was selected 11th overall at the OHL Priority selection. In his rookie campaign, Danford appeared in 63 games for the Generals, scoring four times and adding 17 assists from the blue line.

Rounding out the trio of teammates representing the Generals is defenceman Luca Marrelli. The Toronto, Ont., native was taken in the 5th round, 81st overall at the 2021 OHL Priority Selection. As a late birthday, Marrelli has now played two full seasons with the Generals. In 2021-2022, his rookie year, Marrelli appeared in 62 games and tallied 12 assists. Last season, he played in 58 games, but scored five goals and added 23 assists for 28 points.

TAKES ON WORLD JUNIORS

The Oshawa Generals are proud to announce that a member of our stellar forward core, Rasmus Kumpulainen, has been selected on Team Finland’s final roster for the World Junior Hockey Championship (WJHC) in Sweden. The Finnish Ice Hockey Association announced the final team roster after the World Cup camp period. Kumpulainen will be wearing #18. The Lahti, Fin., native has been an offensive force for the Generals during the first half of the season. Meeting 27 games with 27 overall points, he has acquired 14 goals and 13 assists. Before joining the Generals via the 13th overall selection at the 2023 CHL Import Draft, Kumpulainen had his NHL dreams come true. On June 29th, Kumpulainen heard his named called at the 2023 NHL Entry Draft in Nashville, Tenn. The Minnesota Wild selected the 6.02 centre with the 53rd pick in the 2nd round.

Internationally, Kumpulainen has represented Finland on three other occasions. In 2021-2022 he made 13 appearances for his country at the U17 level. At the 2022 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, Kumpulainen appeared in five games, and scored five points by way of two goals and three assists. Finally, Kumpulainen has made six appearances with the Finnish U20 team, adding four assists to his international resume. All in all, Kumpulainen has made 40 appearances dawning his Finnish flag, scoring 10 goals and 15 assists. “Ras being selected to play for Finland is an absolute credit to him as a player and the work the coaches have put into his season so far,” said team General Manager Roger Hunt. “I think him playing in North America will certainly enhance his opportunities with the Minnesota Wild and we wish him all the best with this opportunity but can’t wait to see him in the second half of the season for the Gens.” The Oshawa Generals organization would like to congratulate our very own and wish him the best as he competes for gold.
