FROM OUR FRONT OFFICE to our fans Dear Generals fans, as we embark on yet another year of hockey, I’m excited for the outlook of our hockey club. This year, the expectations are higher as we continue our search for yet another championship. This season, we welcome many new and exciting young players along with many returnees, all coming together to make this year very promising. I wanted to thank all of our loyal fans for all their continued support and I look forward to seeing everyone around the rink soon!

Rocco Tullio President

I want to take this opportunity to welcome all of you to the 2023-2024 Oshawa Generals and the return of OHL hockey after a long summer. This season will be one of the most competitive campaigns we have had in several years. The Eastern Conference will be a dog fight, night in and night out. Facing the Ottawa 67’s in the first-round last season, showed us how much the game changes when the playoffs arrive. You must bring it every night. Nothing is given and everything will be earned. Make no mistake, there are no playoffs if you don’t take care of the regular season. With Derek Laxdal and his staff returning for there second season, they will be more comfortable in this environment and understand with your tremendous support comes expectations. The players playing under them for the second year should have no surprises on the demands and expectations on them. Our scouts have done another tremendous job in identifying talent for us and none more impressive then our 2023 first rounder, Owen Griffin who has begun to earn his way into the hearts of Gens fans, team mates and coaches for years to come. Our past is certainly something that all our supporters and everyone in our organization is very proud of. This season our entire focus right now is on the present. We want to have the best team possible to challenge for silverware again. Anything but your best won’t be good enough to make you a member of this Oshawa General’s was the message from training camp to now. This message remains the same. GO GENS GO !!!!!!

Roger Hunt

Vice President & General Manager

hockey ETIQUETTE While we score goals on the ice, our goal off the ice is to make sure all of #GensNation has the best game experience possible! We’ve made a list of some important reminders for all fans to keep in mind so that everyone’s night out is a special one.

1. WAIT FOR THE WHISTLE TO ENTER AND EXIT SEATING AREA

A lot can happen in a split second of hockey action – and we don’t want anyone to miss anything. Fans who move from their seat during play can block the view of an entire section of fans. Please wait until a whistle blows to make any move to and from your seats. QUICK TIP - There will always be extended stoppages following the first whistle after the 14:00 & 6:00 minute marks of a period (unless there is an icing, goal, or the start of a power play – just listen for the buzzer!)

2. BE MINDFUL OF THOSE AROUND YOU

Trust us, we know the games will have you at the edge of your seat, but if you lean too far forward, you’ll block the view of those around you. There isn’t a bad seat in the building, so sit back and enjoy the game!

3. KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PUCK

Things move quickly at our games, including flying sticks and pucks. Keep your eye on the puck at all times to avoid any potential injuries!

4. NON-SMOKING FACILITY

The Tribute Communities Centre is a non-smoking, no re-entry facility. Smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, on TCC property, is prohibited.

5. HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE

We don’t expect everyone to be best friends with the Petes’ fans – some things just don’t mix. But, we do think it’s pretty cool they’re coming to our building to enjoy the same great game we love. Please be aware of those sitting around you, including children and let the play on the ice do the talking. Abusive and inappropriate language will NOT be tolerated.

6. HAVE FUN

Get loud, cheer, and let your favourite team on the ice know you’re behind them – Afterall, hockey is the best sport out there.

AROUND THE ohl AS OF FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 2ND

KINGSTON FRONTENACS - EASTERN DIVISION Sitting comfortably in fourth place in the eastern standings, Kingston holds 43 points, seven behind Ottawa and six ahead of Peterborough. The week ahead is a busy one at the Frontenacs home turf, the Leon’s Centre. The team will gear up to face the Generals this Friday and the Petes on Sunday. On Friday, they will be hosting their “Women in Sports Night,” dedicated to celebrating and honouring the extraordinary achievements of local female athletes who have left an indelible mark on the Kingston community. Their faceoffs this weekend will be vital, as they’re trying to grab those tougher points against Oshawa and keep the power over Peterborough. PHOTO BY: JAN MURPHY

NORTH BAY BATTALION - CENTRAL DIVISION With 54 points, North Bay sits just one single point behind that top spot in the Central Divison, being held by Sudbury. After a doubleheader against the Wolves on Jan. 25th and 26th, the Battalion got the short end of the stick twice in a row, with both games going to the extra overtime frame and resulting in 5-4 losses. North Bay did push Sudbury into a shootout the second time around but still fell short by one. One player in the spotlight this season has been Battalion’s winger Anthony Romani, racking up an OHL-leading total of 73 points in 46 games so far. PHOTO BY: SEAN RYAN

SOO GREYHOUNDS - MIDWEST DIVISION The Soo Greyhounds have been riding a five-game high, with wins under their belt outscoring their opponents 28-7. Tied for first place, the Hounds (31-12-2-1) and Spirit (32-12-0-1) are set to square off on Wednesday in a 7:05 p.m. start at the Dow Event Center. While both clubs have 65 points, Saginaw has a game in hand. So far, the clubs have met five times with the road team winning all five. If Soo grabs this victory, then they will take the lead over Saginaw in the standings and be that much closer to first place in their conference and overall. PHOTO BY: SOO GREYHOUNDS

GUELPH STORM WEST DIVISION Guelph is riding eighth place right now overall at 53 points, just one ahead of Oshawa and one behind North Bay. Depending on how they perform this weekend, that could change quickly and go one in two directions. Erie, Kitchener, and London are the opponents that the Storm will face this week, which gives them the possibility to either grab some victories or be disappointed. Coming off of their 7-1 downfall to Owen Sound, the Storm are going to be looking for that confidence boost going into their matchups. PHOTO BY: GAR FITZGERALD

game day PREVIEW It is retro night as the Oshawa Generals continue their home stand taking in the Flint Firebirds for the second time this season. The Generals are coming off a loss to the Kingston Frontenacs, a game that could have seen Oshawa climb into the top spot in the Eastern Conference with a win. The Gens are currently tied for first in the East Division with the Brantford Bulldogs but have played one more game. Flint enters this one on a three-game losing streak including a big 9-2 loss to the league’s top team the London Knights the last time they hit the ice.

Last Meeting: The last time that these two faced off was in Flint as the Oshawa Generals were on a Michigan road trip and it was the Gens coming out on top 10-2. Oshawa got out to an early lead and did not look back as the team scored five goals before the Firebirds managed to get on the board, the Gens would respond with another pair of goals. Flint got an early one to start the third period, but three unanswered goals would cap things off. Ethan Toms not only scored his first Ontario Hockey League goal but he managed to find the back of the net twice, while Calum Ritchie was a key factor in this game picking up five assists in the win.

player to watch

OLIVER PEER

Acquired from the Windsor Spitfires Peer has 12 points in 10 games as a member of the Firebirds. On the season the winger has accumulated 59 points including 28 goals and 31 assists leading the team in the team in all three offensive statistical categories.

last game RECAP TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 6

With a chance to move into the top spot in the Eastern Division the Oshawa Generals fall 6-4 to the Kingston Frontenacs. Jacob Oster made 31 saves on 36 shots that he faced, while Matthew Buckley picked up a goal and an assist in the loss. It was the Frontenacs controlling play to start the game, but after Oshawa got the puck down low, the Gens opened the scoring as Luca Marrelli found Tristan Delisle on the doorstep making it 1-0. Less than two minutes later that lead would grow as it was Luke Torrance gaining the zone before dropping the puck to Matthew Buckley who fired a shot past Mason Vaccari giving Oshawa a 2-0 lead. Kingston would cut the deficit in half later in the period as Matthew Soto got around a Generals’ defenceman before centring to Paul Ludwinski for a tap in, cutting the score to 2-1 Oshawa. Nearly halfway through the second period, the Frontenacs would capitalize on a powerplay as a Soto shot squeaked through Oster and it was Jacob Battaglia jumping on the loose puck and tapping it in tying the game at 2-2. A little under two minutes later, and again on the powerplay, Kingston would strike as a point shot from Roman Schmidt found its way through traffic and into the back of the net making it 3-2 Frontenacs. But that lead was short lives as Buckley made a nice pass, springing Dylan Roobroeck on a breakaway, and after his first shot was turned away, he buried the rebound tying the game at 3-3. The back and forth would continue as Kingston jumped back in front through Ludwinski again when the Frontenacs captain tucked in a rebound for a 4-3 lead. Kingston added another in the third period, once again, on the powerplay as Linus Hemström took a one-timer that got under the arm of Oster, making it 5-3 Frontenacs. Oshawa would get one back with an empty net it was Calum Ritchie skating behind the net centring the puck to Beckett Sennecke who jammed home the puck cutting the lead to 5-4. The Frontenacs added an empty netter after the puck hopped over the blue line and Jax Dubois chased it down shooting it into the net making it 6-4.

Giving back has always been important to my family and me. Starting The John Tavares Foundation was something we talked about for a long time, and is something I’m incredibly proud of. The foundation is centered on coming together to ensure the next generation has access to healthy foods, an understanding of the benefits of movement and increased availability of mental health resources. We hope to positively impact as many children and communities as possible to create a brighter future for everyone.

IN MEMORIAM On July 30th, the entire Oshawa Generals organization and family was devastated with the news of the passing of long-time scout Michael ‘Craiger’ Craig. Michael unfortunately lost his battle with a rare form of colorectal cancer. Craiger, as he was known around the rink, was a scout with the Generals’ organization for Eastern Ontario for more than 15 years. He scouted players such as Will Petschenig, Daniel Altshuller, Serron Noel, William Ennis, and current General Matthew Buckley – just to name a few. Michael was also a part of the 2014-2015 Memorial Cup Championship run. Throughout his career on and off the ice, Michael selflessly helped and assisted so many students, Special Olympic athletes, OHL and minor hockey players – touching and enriching countless lives.

MIKE CRAIG 1976-2023

The entire Oshawa Generals organization continues to send their love to entire Craig family, his students, and all of the players who he crossed paths with.

TRADE DEADLINE

recap

It was an active trade deadline for the Oshawa Generals as the team made key acquisitions while sending a long-time player out. As the Gens shape up to make a push in the Eastern Conference, they were not afraid to add to a roster that was showing potential in the first half. Oshawa made a pair of trades at this year’s trade deadline, the first was bringing in over-age defenceman Connor Punnett for Thomas Stewart and a pair of draft picks, and the second was the addition of Zackary Sandhu another defenceman for three picks.

Coming In: Connor Punnett: An over-age defenceman acquired from the Barrie Colts Punnett is a punishing presence at the back end not afraid to throw a big hit. Despite the intimidation factor, the defenceman is good with the puck picking up 36 points so far this season including six goals and 30 assists. Punnett spent parts of four seasons with the Colts after being traded from the Saginaw Spirit, he played 190 games for Barrie eventually dawning the C on his jersey. Zackary Sandhu: In his third Ontario Hockey League season the defenceman the mobile defenceman was picked up from the Guelph Storm. Sandhu brings a calmness to the back end solid at making a crucial first pass and is good at separating on rushing opponents from the puck. The defenceman has set a career-best in all offensive stats with three goals and five assists for eight points on the year and will look to add to this total.

Going Out: Thomas Stewart: After being drafted by the Barrie Colts the defenceman spent three seasons with the Generals becoming a fan favourite, he was traded back to the Barrie Colts. Playing 155 games a Gen the smooth-skating defenceman was a veteran presence at the backend bringing sure-handed passing and a cool head. Picks: Oshawa dealt away five picks at this year’s trade deadline. The two picks that the Gens moved in the move for Punnett were the Soo Greyhounds’ third-round pick in 2025 and the Peterborough Petes’ sixth-round pick in 2027. The Generals traded three picks away to bring in Sandhu those were the Mississauga Steelheads’ third-round pick in 2025, the Oshawa Generals’ fifth-round pick in 2026, and the Gens’ ninth-round pick in 2027.
