Dear Generals fans, as we embark on yet another year of hockey, I’m excited for the outlook of our hockey club. This year, the expectations are higher as we continue our search for yet another championship.

This season, we welcome many new and exciting young players along with many returnees, all coming together to make this year very promising.

I wanted to thank all of our loyal fans for all their continued support and I look forward to seeing everyone around the rink soon!

I want to take this opportunity to welcome all of you to the 2023-2024 Oshawa Generals and the return of OHL hockey after a long summer.

This season will be one of the most competitive campaigns we have had in several years. The Eastern Conference will be a dog fight, night in and night out. Facing the Ottawa 67’s in the first-round last season, showed us how much the game changes when the playoffs arrive. You must bring it every night. Nothing is given and everything will be earned. Make no mistake, there are no playoffs if you don’t take care of the regular season.

With Derek Laxdal and his staff returning for there second season, they will be more comfortable in this environment and understand with your tremendous support comes expectations. The players playing under them for the second year should have no surprises on the demands and expectations on them. Our scouts have done another tremendous job in identifying talent for us and none more impressive then our 2023 first rounder, Owen Griffin who has begun to earn his way into the hearts of Gens fans, team mates and coaches for years to come.

Our past is certainly something that all our supporters and everyone in our organization is very proud of. This season our entire focus right now is on the present. We want to have the best team possible to challenge for silverware again.

Anything but your best won’t be good enough to make you a member of this Oshawa General’s was the message from training camp to now. This message remains the same.

While we score goals on the ice, our goal off the ice is to make sure all of #GensNation has the best game experience possible! We’ve made a list of some important reminders for all fans to keep in mind so that everyone’s night out is a special one.

1. WAIT FOR THE WHISTLE TO ENTER AND EXIT SEATING AREA

A lot can happen in a split second of hockey action – and we don’t want anyone to miss anything. Fans who move from their seat during play can block the view of an entire section of fans. Please wait until a whistle blows to make any move to and from your seats.

QUICK TIP - There will always be extended stoppages following the first whistle after the 14:00 & 6:00 minute marks of a period (unless there is an icing, goal, or the start of a power play – just listen for the buzzer!)

2. BE MINDFUL OF THOSE AROUND YOU

Trust us, we know the games will have you at the edge of your seat, but if you lean too far forward, you’ll block the view of those around you. There isn’t a bad seat in the building, so sit back and enjoy the game!

3. KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PUCK

Things move quickly at our games, including flying sticks and pucks. Keep your eye on the puck at all times to avoid any potential injuries!

4. NON-SMOKING FACILITY

The Tribute Communities Centre is a non-smoking, no re-entry facility. Smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, on TCC property, is prohibited.

5. HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE

We don’t expect everyone to be best friends with the Petes’ fans – some things just don’t mix. But, we do think it’s pretty cool they’re coming to our building to enjoy the same great game we love. Please be aware of those sitting around you, including children and let the play on the ice do the talking. Abusive and inappropriate language will NOT be tolerated.

6. HAVE FUN

Get loud, cheer, and let your favourite team on the ice know you’re behind them – Afterall, hockey is the best sport out there.

KINGSTON FRONTENACS - EASTERN DIVISION

The Kingston Frontenacs are comfortably sitting fourth in the Eastern Division at 54 points. This weekend they match up with the first-place London, last-place Niagara, and fourteenth-place Erie. Coming off of a hot 7-4 win against Barrie on Family Day, the Frontenacs are sure to be fired up coming into this weekend. Kingston’s venue was newly named “Slush Puppie Place” as officials from the City of Kingston, Slush Puppie Canada and the Kingston Frontenacs held an official unveiling news conference before the Frontenacs’ Ontario Hockey League win over the Barrie Colts. Their game against London on Feb. 23 is dedicated to paying tribute to military forces and their families with special CADPAT uniforms being auctioned and proceeds donated to the Kingston Military Family Resource Centre (KMFRC).

NORTH BAY BATTALION - CENTRAL DIVISION

In the Central Division, North Bay is holding second place with 64 points, just two ahead of Mississauga Steelheads. This weekend they take on their Michigan swing, making their final foray into the Ontario Hockey League’s Western Conference as a three-game trip completes a run of four straight away games. The Battalion gets a rematch with the Saginaw Spirit and face the Flint Firebirds before visiting the Sarnia Sting on Sunday. The Saginaw game is the last in a string of four games consisting of two against each of the always competitive Ottawa 67’s and Spirit. North Bay, with a won-lostextended record of 28-18-8, is 10-4-2 in their last 16 games after two straight losses. The Troops, who edged the visiting 67’s 3-2 last Friday night, lost 5-3 to Saginaw at Memorial Gardens on Sunday before a 6-3 setback Monday at Ottawa. This weekend would be a good opportunity to bounce back for a clinch in the playoffs.

LONDON KNIGHTS - MIDWEST DIVISION

83 points and first overall with a clinched playoff spot, the London Knights are suiting up for their final regulation push. London plays five of their next six on the road, including the eastern swing to Kingston and Ottawa this weekend, and then ends with five of their final seven at Budweiser Gardens. Left-winger Easton Cowan is on an absolute hot point streak. If he grabs a single point against Kingston on Feb. 23, he will reach 25 straight games and tie Sergei Kostitsyn (2006-07) for the best personal run with the Knights since the late 1990s. In 42 games, the Maple Leaf prospect has earned himself 75 points.

WINDSOR SPITFIRESWEST DIVISION

The Windsor Spitfires are simply continuing to push forward with 41 points, just one ahead of the Peterborough and six behind Barrie, sitting in 18th overall. Last in the Western Conference and trying to chase down a playoff spot, the Spitfires didn’t dwell after Saturday’s 3-2 overtime road loss to the Flint Firebirds. Instead, against a far more formidable opponent on Sunday, the Spitfires scored the game’s first five goals and held on for a 6-4 win over the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds before a crowd of 5,096 at the WFCU Centre. Although in their last game against London on Monday they fell 7-2. This weekend, the Spits have appointments with Guelph and Owen Sound and are looking to grab a few points to catch

CONNOR PUNNETT

Acquired from the Barrie Colts at the deadline the big physical defenceman has lived up to his reputation delivering big hits while also contributing on the score sheet. In 20 games with the Generals the d man has 12 points including three goals and nine assists.

PREVIEW game day

It’s Pride Night as the Oshawa Generals look to bounce back after a 5-0 loss to the Ottawa 67’s as they return home to face the Barrie Colts.

Friday night’s game was one to forget as the 67’s got things started just over two minutes into the game scoring five unanswered goals as the shutout the Gens. Oshawa sits just one point in front of both Ottawa and Mississauga in the conference.

The Barrie Colts enter this one sitting eighth in the Eastern Conference with a 4-4-2-0 record over their last 10 games. They are coming off an overtime win against the Owen Sound Attack snapping a three-game losing streak.

Last Meeting:

The last time that these teams faced off against each other the Generals fell 3-2 in a shootout kickstarting a three-game slide.

After jumping out in front 2-0 with goals from Tristan Delisle and captain Stuart Rolofs in the first and second periods, the Colts would punch back with a pair of their own tying the game at 2-2

With neither team scoring in overtime, the game headed to a shootout where it took four rounds and a single goal to decide the game as Roenick Jodoin beat Noah Bender to win the game.

THOMAS STEWART

A fan favourite in his time with the Oshawa Generals Stewart played 155 games with the team before he was traded to the Colts at the deadline. In 18 games with Barrie the defenceman has eight points including three goals and five assists.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 23

The Oshawa Generals missed out on two points tonight and a potential playoff clinch after falling against the Ottawa 67’s in the Nation’s Capital.

An immediate two minutes into the opening frame, Ottawa jumped out of the gate and secured the first goal of the game, courtesy of Kimi Korbler. His sixth of the season, right off of the draw in the Generals zone, Korbler walked in through the middle, moved to his backhand and tucked it in to make it 1-0.

Following the 67’s quick goal, the Generals found themselves struggling with two back-to-back penalties. After killing off the first penalty, the second brought an unfortunate outcome after Ottawa gained the lead by two. Sam Mayer with the one-timer after his first attempt missing the net wide, the puck was moved up top and Henry Mews gave a perfect pass for Mayer to fire the rocket and gain his 20th of the season.

Ottawa’s third came as fast in the second just as it did in the first. Not even one minute into the 20, 67’s forward Jacob Maillet beat Jacob Oster through the five-hole for the second time this game making it 3-0.

The Generals almost caught a break after a long conversation between officials deciding if Tyler Graham’s potential tip in to D’Amato’s blue-line shot was a highstick. The goal was disallowed and crushed Oshawa’s momentum just before Ottawa’s Chris Barlas snapped his 10th of the season after a high wrist shot stickside behind Oster.

Around the 17-minute mark in the second, Oster and Noah Bender did a quick shift swap before Oster made it back in net to play out the rest of the game.

Ottawa wanted another quickly added to the receipt when Jack Dever was left wide open in front and received the pass from Brad Gardiner who slipped it right through the Generals defenceman, 4:23 into the second, making it 5-0.

A slower third period in scoring with seven penalties and a combination of 18 more shots from both teams made for a result of 5-0 for the 67’s on home ice.

IN MEMORIAM

On July 30th, the entire Oshawa Generals organization and family was devastated with the news of the passing of long-time scout Michael ‘Craiger’ Craig. Michael unfortunately lost his battle with a rare form of colorectal cancer.

Craiger, as he was known around the rink, was a scout with the Generals’ organization for Eastern Ontario for more than 15 years. He scouted players such as Will Petschenig, Daniel Altshuller, Serron Noel, William Ennis, and current General Matthew Buckley – just to name a few. Michael was also a part of the 2014-2015 Memorial Cup Championship run.

Throughout his career on and off the ice, Michael selflessly helped and assisted so many students, Special Olympic athletes, OHL and minor hockey players – touching and enriching countless lives.

The entire Oshawa Generals organization continues to send their love to entire Craig family, his students, and all of the players who he crossed paths with.

It was an active trade deadline for the Oshawa Generals as the team made key acquisitions while sending a long-time player out.

As the Gens shape up to make a push in the Eastern Conference, they were not afraid to add to a roster that was showing potential in the first half.

Oshawa made a pair of trades at this year’s trade deadline, the first was bringing in over-age defenceman Connor Punnett for Thomas Stewart and a pair of draft picks, and the second was the addition of Zackary Sandhu another defenceman for three picks.

Connor Punnett: An over-age defenceman acquired from the Barrie Colts Punnett is a punishing presence at the back end not afraid to throw a big hit. Despite the intimidation factor, the defenceman is good with the puck picking up 36 points so far this season including six goals and 30 assists. Punnett spent parts of four seasons with the Colts after being traded from the Saginaw Spirit, he played 190 games for Barrie eventually dawning the C on his jersey.

Zackary Sandhu: In his third Ontario Hockey League season the defenceman the mobile defenceman was picked up from the Guelph Storm. Sandhu brings a calmness to the back end solid at making a crucial first pass and is good at separating on rushing opponents from the puck. The defenceman has set a career-best in all offensive stats with three goals and five assists for eight points on the year and will look to add to this total.

Thomas Stewart: After being drafted by the Barrie Colts the defenceman spent three seasons with the Generals becoming a fan favourite, he was traded back to the Barrie Colts. Playing 155 games a Gen the smooth-skating defenceman was a veteran presence at the backend bringing sure-handed passing and a cool head.

Picks: Oshawa dealt away five picks at this year’s trade deadline. The two picks that the Gens moved in the move for Punnett were the Soo Greyhounds’ third-round pick in 2025 and the Peterborough Petes’ sixth-round pick in 2027. The Generals traded three picks away to bring in Sandhu those were the Mississauga Steelheads’ third-round pick in 2025, the Oshawa Generals’ fifth-round pick in 2026, and the Gens’ ninth-round pick in 2027.
