FROM OUR FRONT OFFICE to our fans Dear Generals fans, as we embark on yet another year of hockey, I’m excited for the outlook of our hockey club. This year, the expectations are higher as we continue our search for yet another championship. This season, we welcome many new and exciting young players along with many returnees, all coming together to make this year very promising. I wanted to thank all of our loyal fans for all their continued support and I look forward to seeing everyone around the rink soon!

Rocco Tullio President

I want to take this opportunity to welcome all of you to the 2023-2024 Oshawa Generals and the return of OHL hockey after a long summer. This season will be one of the most competitive campaigns we have had in several years. The Eastern Conference will be a dog fight, night in and night out. Facing the Ottawa 67’s in the first-round last season, showed us how much the game changes when the playoffs arrive. You must bring it every night. Nothing is given and everything will be earned. Make no mistake, there are no playoffs if you don’t take care of the regular season. With Derek Laxdal and his staff returning for there second season, they will be more comfortable in this environment and understand with your tremendous support comes expectations. The players playing under them for the second year should have no surprises on the demands and expectations on them. Our scouts have done another tremendous job in identifying talent for us and none more impressive then our 2023 first rounder, Owen Griffin who has begun to earn his way into the hearts of Gens fans, team mates and coaches for years to come. Our past is certainly something that all our supporters and everyone in our organization is very proud of. This season our entire focus right now is on the present. We want to have the best team possible to challenge for silverware again. Anything but your best won’t be good enough to make you a member of this Oshawa General’s was the message from training camp to now. This message remains the same. GO GENS GO !!!!!!

hockey ETIQUETTE While we score goals on the ice, our goal off the ice is to make sure all of #GensNation has the best game experience possible! We’ve made a list of some important reminders for all fans to keep in mind so that everyone’s night out is a special one.

1. WAIT FOR THE WHISTLE TO ENTER AND EXIT SEATING AREA

A lot can happen in a split second of hockey action – and we don’t want anyone to miss anything. Fans who move from their seat during play can block the view of an entire section of fans. Please wait until a whistle blows to make any move to and from your seats. QUICK TIP - There will always be extended stoppages following the first whistle after the 14:00 & 6:00 minute marks of a period (unless there is an icing, goal, or the start of a power play – just listen for the buzzer!)

2. BE MINDFUL OF THOSE AROUND YOU

Trust us, we know the games will have you at the edge of your seat, but if you lean too far forward, you’ll block the view of those around you. There isn’t a bad seat in the building, so sit back and enjoy the game!

3. KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PUCK

Things move quickly at our games, including flying sticks and pucks. Keep your eye on the puck at all times to avoid any potential injuries!

4. NON-SMOKING FACILITY

The Tribute Communities Centre is a non-smoking, no re-entry facility. Smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, on TCC property, is prohibited.

5. HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE

We don’t expect everyone to be best friends with the Petes’ fans – some things just don’t mix. But, we do think it’s pretty cool they’re coming to our building to enjoy the same great game we love. Please be aware of those sitting around you, including children and let the play on the ice do the talking. Abusive and inappropriate language will NOT be tolerated.

6. HAVE FUN

Get loud, cheer, and let your favourite team on the ice know you’re behind them – Afterall, hockey is the best sport out there.

AROUND THE chl AS OF MONDAY, DECEMBER 11TH

RIMOUSKI OCEANIC - QMJHL

Well, we officially know one team competing for the 105th Memorial Cup championship. The Rimouski Oceanic were just announced as the Host team for the 105th edition of the tournament, to take place at the end of next year’s CHL season. The tournament will mark the return to Quebec after 10 years and two tournaments in the Maritimes. It also marks the first time the Oceanic will host the tournament since they hosted in 2009. This season, the Oceanic are in the midst of a winning season. After 31 games, Rimouski sits 16-13-2-0 and are tied for fourth in the Eastern Conference with the Chicoutimi Sagueneens. The Oceanic are home to top-10 point-getter in the QMJHL, 2005-born Alexandre Blais. Blais has 42 points in 31 games and is only six points back of the league point leader. PHOTO BY: RIMOUSKI OCEANIC

CHICOUTIMI SAGUENEENS - QMJHL The Chicoutimi Sagueneens are hoping this is the season they find some serious playoff success. In the last 16 seasons, the Saguenees have only advanced out of the first round on three occasions. The franchise has won a single QMJHL championship, but that was before the turn of the century in 1994. This season, the Sagueneens are right in the thick of things, tied with the Rimouski Oceanic for fourth in the Eastern Conference. Their record of 15-13-2-2 is good enough for 34 points. The major obstacle for the Sagueneens are who they share the Eastern Conference with – both the QMJHL leading Baie-Comeau Drakkar (56 points) and Maritime leading Halifax Mooseheads (45 points) The Saguenees’ offence runs through winger Maxim Masse. In 32 games, the draft-eligible 2006-born forward has 30 points, by way of 13 goals and 17 assists. PHOTO BY: STUDIO BRUNO GIRARD

MOOSE JAW WARRIORS - WHL While they’ve cooled off as of late, the Moose Jaw Warriors are still clearly at the top of the class in the WHL’s Eastern Conference. Currently third in their conference, the Warriors are 17-12-0-2 good enough for 36 points. While stuck behind the high-flying Medicine Hat Tigers and Saskatoon Blades, the Warriors have still been able to make a name for themselves despite recent struggles. Moose Jaw are winless in their last three games, dropping contests to the Saskatoon Blades, Brandon Wheat Kings, and Red Deer Rebels. Even after the loss to the Blades, the Warriors hold an edge over their provincial rivals with two more victories earlier this season, by a score of 9-6 and 3-1. The Blades are home to Seattle Kraken 2nd round pick Jagger Firkus, who again is lighting up the WHL. In just 29 games, the 2004-born forward has 27 goals and 26 assists for 53 points. PHOTO BY: MARK SMITH

PRINCE ALBERT RAIDERS - WHL While their days at the Art Hauser Centre may be coming to a close, the community of Prince Albert is getting ready for their brand new home – even if the ground breaking just happened. Over the last couple of weeks, construction has begun on a new Aquatic and Arenas Recreation Centre, which includes a brand new 4,500 seat arena for the Raiders to call home. The Raiders have played at the approximately 3,000 seat Art Hauser centre since their inception in 1971. Since then, they’ve won two WHL championships (1985,2019) and one Memorial Cup (1985). This season, the Raiders find themselves right in the middle of the Eastern Conference with 34 points. After 32 games, the Raiders are 16-14-0-2 and just two points back of the Moose Jaw Warriors for second in the East Division. Their division is led by the WHL leading Saskatoon Blades. PHOTO BY: MARK PETERSON

GUELPH STORM - OHL Another team who has maybe cooled off from a really hot start to the season are the Guelph Storm. While the Storm have still given up some of the fewest goals all season, only the 67’s has given up fewer, the offense slowly faded resulting in a lot of close games. Lately, the Storm have been finishing on the wrong end of one goal games, including their most recent loss to the Kitchener Rangers. Stuck in a strong Western Conference, the Storm have scored the fewest goals in the Western Conference with just 90. In their last four games, Guelph has only earned a single point, losing three in regulation and one in overtime. When the Storm are winning, it’s usually thanks to the stick of winger Braeden Bowman. In 30 games, Bowman has 14 goals and 16 assists. The overage forward is coming off a career-best season a year ago, where he scored 72 points in 54 games. PHOTO BY: GAR FITZGERALD

SARNIA STING - OHL The pride of southwestern Ontario, the Sarnia Sting can argue they’re the talk of the southern point of our province – but it might not come with too many bragging rights. The region, home to both the Windsor Spitfires and the Sarnia Sting, unfortunately isn’t seeing too much success. The Windsor Spitfires recently climbed out of the OHL’s basement, while the Sting aren’t too far ahead in 18th out of 20 with only 22 points. Sarnia has had a rough season to say the least, winning just 11 of their 30 games to date, with their most recent loss coming 4-1 to the Oshawa Generals. To make matters worse, the Sting have only won twice in their last 10 games and sit seven points out of the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. While they haven’t given up 150 goals like their region neighbours, the Sting have struggled to score, and in their 30 games have only potted 95 goals, second worst in the Western Conference. The Sting are led by the pair of twins acquired earlier this season, Jacob and Andrew LeBlanc. The twins have a combined 54 points in just 30 games and are the heart of the Sting’s offense. game day PREVIEW It has been a while, but the Oshawa Generals are returning home to face the Mississauga Steelheads in the first game of a home-and-home. The Gens are wrapping up a five-game road trip where they picked up three wins taking down Brantford 5-2, Windsor 6-3, and Sarnia 4-1. Oshawa finished their time away from the Tributes Communities Centre 3-2. Mississauga sits in first place in the Central Division and sit in a tie for first in the Eastern Conference with the Peterborough Petes. The Steelheads are up and down right now, winning two of their last four games and dropping the others to Barrie and North Bay.

Last Meeting: The last time these two hit the ice together was four games into the season where it was the Gens coming out victorious winning the game 4-1 at home. It was two three-point performances from Luca D’Amato and Rasmus Kumpulianen who drove things offensively as the defenceman scored just before the halfway point of the first. After going up two goals in the first the Generals would give one up early in the second, but Jacob Oster shut the door from there, while the Gens would add two more in the second and put the game to rest.

LUKE MISA

An undersized forward from Oakville, Ontario Misa has a career-high in points and assists picking up 31 assists and 44 points so far this season. The third-year player is on a five-game point-streak, including a game with a hat trick and another three-point game.

last game RECAP SUNDAY, DECEMBER 10

Fresh off a big 6-3 win over the Windsor Spitfires, the Generals wrapped up their season-long five-game road trip with an afternoon visit to the Sarnia Sting. Coming to the Progressive Auto Sales Arena, the Generals have found a lot of success, coming out victorious in their last three visits, while the Sting share the same record in their last three visits to Oshawa. The Generals had one of their best starts to a game this season, as just 75 seconds into the game, Minnesota Wild prospect Rasmus Kumpulainen beat the Sting netminder for a 1-0 lead. Kumpulainen’s 14th of the season leaps over Matthew Buckley for the team lead in goal. Spoiler alert: it wouldn’t stay that way. Just 29 seconds later, Matthew Buckley scored his 14th of the season on the Generals’ second shot of the game, to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. Just as quickly as he was jumped for the team lead, the Ottawa native joined his teammate back at the top with 14 goals a piece. The game quickly took on the storyline of next goal wins, as on the very next shift, the Sting’s Kai Schwindt scored on the home side’s very first shot to cut the lead in half. After quick starts from both squads, neither team could find any more offense, so the Generals head to room up 2-1 despite getting outshot 9-8 by the Sting. During the second period, the Generals found themselves in penalty trouble, needing to kill multiple penalties off in succession. With the momentum on the

Sting’s side, it wasn’t until halfway through the frame the Generals got a shot. To their credit, the Generals did kill of both penalties and were able to keep a lot of Sarnia’s shots to the outside. A few minutes after getting their first shot of the period, a point shot from Ben Danford was tipped home by hot-stick Connor Lockhart. Lockhart’s first of the day gave the Gens a 3-1 lead and his fourth goal in 24 hours. With 4:46 remaining in the second period, the Generals were finally awarded a power play chance, after a Sarnia high-sticking penalty. The Gens spent most of the two-minute power play in the Sting zone but were unable to find their fourth goal of the game. After 40 minutes, the Generals continued to lead 3-1 but were starting to fall behind in the shot clock 17-14. The third period was one where the Generals did everything they could to defend the lead – and it started to show in puck possession. The Sting continued to throw everything they could at Bender, but after their first shot, couldn’t beat him again. The Generals found an insurance marker of the stick of Luke Torrance, who scored his ninth goal of the season to give Oshawa the 4-1 lead. Oshawa would hold on in the dying minutes, winning their second game in a row, and sweeping the weekend. Noah Bender stopped 26 of the 27 shots he faced for his first OHL win. The Generals will return home on Wednesday, December 13th to take on the Central Division-leading Mississauga Steelheads.

Giving back has always been important to my family and me. Starting The John Tavares Foundation was something we talked about for a long time, and is something I’m incredibly proud of. The foundation is centered on coming together to ensure the next generation has access to healthy foods, an understanding of the benefits of movement and increased availability of mental health resources. We hope to positively impact as many children and communities as possible to create a brighter future for everyone.

IN MEMORIAM On July 30th, the entire Oshawa Generals organization and family was devastated with the news of the passing of long-time scout Michael ‘Craiger’ Craig. Michael unfortunately lost his battle with a rare form of colorectal cancer. Craiger, as he was known around the rink, was a scout with the Generals’ organization for Eastern Ontario for more than 15 years. He scouted players such as Will Petschenig, Daniel Altshuller, Serron Noel, William Ennis, and current General Matthew Buckley – just to name a few. Michael was also a part of the 2014-2015 Memorial Cup Championship run. Throughout his career on and off the ice, Michael selflessly helped and assisted so many students, Special Olympic athletes, OHL and minor hockey players – touching and enriching countless lives.

MIKE CRAIG 1976-2023

The entire Oshawa Generals organization continues to send their love to entire Craig family, his students, and all of the players who he crossed paths with.

LEGACY OF

albert “red” tilson

LIVES ON IN THE ONTARIO HOCKEY LEAGUE BY: JOELLE WOOD

On this November 11, the Ontario Hockey League honours the service of men and women who served our country, those we have lost, and those who continue to protect our freedoms. As we recognize those who have defended our great nation, now and throughout history, the OHL’s most prestigious individual award continues to honour Albert “Red” Tilson. Albert Tilson (1924-1944), nicknamed “Red” for his vibrant hair, was a former Oshawa Generals player killed in service during World War II. He played two seasons for the Generals beginning with the 1941-42 season, and won the J. Ross Robertson Cup as league champion both years. Tilson won the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy in the 1942-43 season as the league’s top scorer, registering 19 goals, 38 assists, and 57 points in 22 games. He had a promising professional hockey career ahead of him, but instead, Tilson enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces on May 27, 1943 to help defend our country. Serving as a Lance Corporal in the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada, Tilson was killed in action in the Netherlands on October 27, 1944 at the young age of 20. “Today we honour the brave men and women in uniform, past and present, who serve and protect our country,” said OHL Commissioner David Branch. “The Ontario Hockey League and the hockey community will forever be indebted to those who have paid the supreme sacrifice for our freedoms. As we continue to honour the great legacy of Red Tilson in our league, it is important that we continue to pay tribute to all who have served our country just like him, and for all they have done to keep us safe.” Donated by The Globe and Mail and first presented in 1945, the Red Tilson Trophy continues to honour his legacy as the League’s most prestigious individual award presented annually to the OHL’s Most Oustanding Player. “For our organization and league to have a person like Red Tilson connected to it, is very special. Maybe no more so then this time of year, thinking of him laying down his life for others to live the life we have today. Whenever I bring in any prospect, I always make a note to educate the player and family on who Red was,” said Oshawa Generals Vice-President and General Manager, Roger Hunt. Tilson’s No. 9 uniform was retired by the Generals on November 12, 2006, a ceremony that included Gus Leonard, who played hockey with Tilson in the armed forces, and Bob Attersley who was the Generals’ first ever recipient of the Red Tilson Trophy. “For Red Tilson’s number 9 to be retired speaks volumes on what he represents as an Oshawa General. The very Memorial Cup is in honour of his memory and the many thousands more who are active or former soldiers serving Canada,” added Hunt. Now immortalized on the Red Tilson Trophy, some of the greatest junior players to ever play in the Ontario Hockey League have had the honour to be recognized in his name.

owen griffin + isaac gravelle

NAMED TO TEAM CANADA FOR U17s Generals forward Owen Griffin, and goaltending prospect Isaac Gravelle, have been named to Team Canada for the 2023 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

The 2023 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, taking place in Charlottetown and Summerside, PEI., runs from November 2nd to November 11th and will once again feature two teams from Canada – Team Canada Red and Team Canada White. Griffin, the 5’10 Markham, Ont., native was selected in the first round, sixth overall by the Generals at the 2023 OHL Priority Selection. In seven games this season, Griffin is still searching for his first OHL point – but has been all over the ice in each of the Generals games. Despite not finding the finish he is hoping for, Griffin has been winning puck battles deep on the forecheck, and he opened up space for himself and his teammates thanks to his speed and stick-handling skills. GensNation did get to see flashes of his potential throughout the preseason when he scored two goals and three assists over four games. Last season, Griffin scored 94 points in just 35 games by way of 51 goals and 43 assists for the York SimcoeExpress. Gravelle, the goaltender from Fenwick, Ont., was taken in the second round by the Generals at the same 2023 OHL Priority Selection. In five games with the GOJHL’s Port Colbourne Sailors, Gravelle has played to a record of 2-1-2, with a strong 2.95 goals against average and .921 save percentage. Gravelle showed a lot of promise at the Generals’ recent summer training camp but was ultimately beaten out for the backup position by 2006-born Noah Bender. At only 16 years old, Gravelle is a name a lot of Generals’ fans should remember over the next few years, as he continues to develop into a star goaltender. Griffin and Gravelle join current Generals Calum Ritchie, Beckett Sennecke, Ben Danford, and David Bedkowski as recent Generals to appear at the tournament for Hockey Canada. Hosted on Prince Edward Island, the 2023 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge begins on November 2nd and will conclude with the Gold Medal game on November 11th.
