Dear Generals fans, as we embark on yet another year of hockey, I’m excited for the outlook of our hockey club. This year, the expectations are higher as we continue our search for yet another championship.

This season, we welcome many new and exciting young players along with many returnees, all coming together to make this year very promising.

I wanted to thank all of our loyal fans for all their continued support and I look forward to seeing everyone around the rink soon!

I want to take this opportunity to welcome all of you to the 2023-2024 Oshawa Generals and the return of OHL hockey after a long summer.

This season will be one of the most competitive campaigns we have had in several years. The Eastern Conference will be a dog fight, night in and night out. Facing the Ottawa 67’s in the first-round last season, showed us how much the game changes when the playoffs arrive. You must bring it every night. Nothing is given and everything will be earned. Make no mistake, there are no playoffs if you don’t take care of the regular season.

With Derek Laxdal and his staff returning for there second season, they will be more comfortable in this environment and understand with your tremendous support comes expectations. The players playing under them for the second year should have no surprises on the demands and expectations on them. Our scouts have done another tremendous job in identifying talent for us and none more impressive then our 2023 first rounder, Owen Griffin who has begun to earn his way into the hearts of Gens fans, team mates and coaches for years to come.

Our past is certainly something that all our supporters and everyone in our organization is very proud of. This season our entire focus right now is on the present. We want to have the best team possible to challenge for silverware again.

Anything but your best won’t be good enough to make you a member of this Oshawa General’s was the message from training camp to now. This message remains the same.

While we score goals on the ice, our goal off the ice is to make sure all of #GensNation has the best game experience possible! We’ve made a list of some important reminders for all fans to keep in mind so that everyone’s night out is a special one.

1. WAIT FOR THE WHISTLE TO ENTER AND EXIT SEATING AREA

A lot can happen in a split second of hockey action – and we don’t want anyone to miss anything. Fans who move from their seat during play can block the view of an entire section of fans. Please wait until a whistle blows to make any move to and from your seats.

QUICK TIP - There will always be extended stoppages following the first whistle after the 14:00 & 6:00 minute marks of a period (unless there is an icing, goal, or the start of a power play – just listen for the buzzer!)

2. BE MINDFUL OF THOSE AROUND YOU

Trust us, we know the games will have you at the edge of your seat, but if you lean too far forward, you’ll block the view of those around you. There isn’t a bad seat in the building, so sit back and enjoy the game!

3. KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PUCK

Things move quickly at our games, including flying sticks and pucks. Keep your eye on the puck at all times to avoid any potential injuries!

4. NON-SMOKING FACILITY

The Tribute Communities Centre is a non-smoking, no re-entry facility. Smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, on TCC property, is prohibited.

5. HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE

We don’t expect everyone to be best friends with the Petes’ fans – some things just don’t mix. But, we do think it’s pretty cool they’re coming to our building to enjoy the same great game we love. Please be aware of those sitting around you, including children and let the play on the ice do the talking. Abusive and inappropriate language will NOT be tolerated.

6. HAVE FUN

Get loud, cheer, and let your favourite team on the ice know you’re behind them – Afterall, hockey is the best sport out there.

The Ontario Hockey League announced that Jacob Oster of the Oshawa Generals is the 2023-24 recipient of the Jim Rutherford Trophy, awarded annually to the OHL’s Goaltender of the Year.

Oster excelled for the Generals under a big workload, leading the OHL with 35 wins while setting a new club mark with 3,569 minutes played in a single season. Oster appeared in 60 of the Generals’ 68 regular season games, posting a 2.82 goals-against average, .905 save percentage and three shutouts.

“Obviously it’s a very big honour and something that wouldn’t be possible without the guys in front of me and the coaching staff helping me,” said Oster of the award. “This whole season has been a great ride and I’m proud to be surrounded by such an amazing organization to get to this point.”

Oster’s 35 wins are the third-highest single season total in team history and the most since Ken Appleby won 38 in 2014-15. His 60 games played equal the club mark set by Peter Sidorkiewicz in 1982-83. Oster finished his season out strong, winning his final 11 consecutive starts. He’s the second goaltender in Oshawa Generals history to win the award, and the first to do so since Mike Fountain in 1991-92.

“This is a fantastic achievement for Jacob,” said Generals Vice President and General Manager Roger Hunt. “Let’s face it, a team rides their hot goalie and we did that with Jacob. Goaltending Coach Mike Parson along with Noah Bender would certainly share in this success of Jacob and our team. Mike’s technical expertise and Noah continuing to put pressure on Jacob to be at his best was a great formula.”

The Generals acquired Oster from the Guelph Storm in January 2023. The 20-year-old from Ottawa, Ont. has been a consistent presence in the Oshawa crease with career totals that include a record of 68-47-12-4 with a 3.29 goals-against average, .891 save percentage and six shutouts over 143 career regular season games between the two teams. He was originally Guelph’s fifth round (92nd overall) pick in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection. Oster attended training camp with the Los Angeles Kings last fall.

Announced in August 2019, the Jim Rutherford Trophy is presented by the League in honour of former OHL goaltender, General Manager, Chairman of the Board and two-time Executive of the Year Jim Rutherford. The current President of Hockey Operations of the Vancouver Canucks, Rutherford played 13 seasons as an NHL netminder and was the architect behind Stanley Cup championships for the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006 and Pittsburgh Penguins in 2016 and 2017. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in November 2019.

The OHL’s Goaltender of the Year Award was first presented in 1988 to Rick Tabaracci (Cornwall), with other notable winners including Manny Legace (Niagara Falls 1993), Andrew Raycroft (Kingston 2000), Craig Anderson (Guelph 2001), the League’s only back-to-back winner Mike Murphy (Belleville 2008 & 2009), along with current NHL goaltenders

Jordan Binnington (Owen Sound 2013), Alex Nedeljkovic (Plymouth 2014), Mackenzie Blackwood (Barrie 2016), Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen (Sudbury 2019) and Nico Daws (Guelph 2020).

Oster was the front-runner in this year’s award voting, with Michael Simpson of the London Knights coming in as runner-up.

Oster is the OHL’s nominee for the Canadian Hockey League Goaltender of the Year Award, presented at the CHL Awards Ceremony at the 2024 Memorial Cup presented by Dow which takes place from May 24 to June 2 in Saginaw, Michigan. He will be formally presented with the Jim Rutherford Trophy at the OHL’s Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, June 12 at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

OSHAWA AND NORTH BAY BEGIN BATTLE FOR ROUND THREE PREVIEW BOBBY ORR TROPHY

It’s a matchup of the Eastern Conference and Oshawa versus North Bay will be a contest you will not want to miss!

The Oshawa Generals are coming from a Round Two Series sweep and preparing for battle against the North Bay Battalion to compete in Round Three of the 2024 OHL Playoffs for the Bobby Orr Trophy.

Oshawa finished the regular season first in the East with 89 points while North Bay trailed behind just two points below with 87. The Generals wrapped up their regular season on a 12-game win streak and they most definitely have carried that momentum into the playoffs. This series will be a tight race and both teams are eager to get things started this Friday at the Tribute Communities Centre as they open Game One out of the best of seven.

“If we play the right way, we’re going to give ourselves the chance to win hockey games every night,” says Generals captain and graduating senior, Stuart Rolofs. “Finishing the year on that winning streak, we’ve continued to play the same way in the playoffs, and it’s been giving us success.”

Last week, the Generals completed their revenge tour against the Ottawa 67’s and won the Round Two Series 4-0. Their goal in Round Two was to initiate payback after being eliminated from the 2023 OHL Playoffs in Round One last year by the 67’s, and surely enough, they completed that task with a perfect sweep.

Game One Round Two began with forward Dylan Roobroeck having a four-point night, scoring, and adding three assists, while Calum Ritchie had three points, scoring twice and adding a helper. In the Game Two 6-1 victory in Oshawa, Beckett Sennecke picked up the first star scoring twice in the win. Game Three in Ottawa was pushed to overtime as Roobroeck and Sennecke each had two-point evenings while forward Connor Lockhart was the overtime hero. Jacob Oster stopped 39 of 42 shots to keep the team alive for almost 80 minutes of play. Game Four concluded after Oshawa dominated with control as rookie Owen Griffin along with Sennecke grabbed two points each and Roobroeck earned his lead in the OHL Playoffs in points.

Since the conclusion of Round Two, Oshawa’s Roobroeck was named the OHL’s Player of the Week, Coach Derek Laxdal was announced the OHL’s Coach of the Year, and Oster was declared OHL’s Goaltender of the Year. North Bay is approaching a #RedHot Generals team that beat them in the regular season by just two points and is remaining both hungry and fiery to get this next round started.

“Both teams have made additions at the trade deadline and finished hard at the stretch,” says Generals Head Coach, Derek Laxdal. “I don’t think the style of play will change much from North Bay to the Oshawa Generals. Both teams are very structured, they defend well, they play hard, compete hard and I think it’s going to make for an exciting series.”

Much like the Generals, the Battalion are approaching the Eastern Conference Finals fresh out of a Round Two sweep after they took down the Sudbury Wolves. Andrew LeBlanc scored two goals in Game One and added an assist to a 5-2 victory. In Game Two, Mike McIvor stopped 35-of-36 shots to gain a 2-0 series lead, Sandis Vilmanis and Jacob Therrien kicked off the scoring in the first period, Justin Ertel and Ihnat Pazii scored 79 seconds apart to give the Battalion a commanding 4-0 lead and Owen Van Steensel added an exclamation point with an empty net from the other end with just over six minutes remaining. Game Three had the Troops trailing 5-2, yet the Battalion responded with three consecutive third-period goals before Dalyn Wakely’s second of the game was the winner in overtime. Game Four wrapped up their series after Vilmanis scored 28 seconds into the first period en route to a hat-trick along with an assist.

“I’ve got to give all the credit in the world to the guys in our room,” says North Bay Head Coach, Ryan Oulahen. “The superpower of our team is the fact that they’ve been together for so long. Facing a rival in the Second Series brought out the best in us. Going to be a different challenge moving forward, but it’s something that we’re looking forward to.”

The Oshawa Generals captain was the catalyst the Gens needed in game one striking twice for his second and third goal of the playoffs. Rolofs has seven points in 11 games so far this postseason including three goals and four assists.

The Oshawa Generals and the North Bay Battalion face off in game two of the Eastern Conference Finals after the Gens took game one.

Oshawa was able to battle back in game one after a slow start to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Stuart Rolofs struck twice while Luca Marrelli scored his first career playoff goal.

North Bay came out hot in game one, but it was not enough to take down the Oshawa Generals. The Battalion got goals from Sandis Vilmanis, adding to his playoff lead in points and Dalyn Wakely who increased his lead in playoff goals.

GAME ONE:

Oshawa erased an early deficit to take down the North Bay Battalion 4-2 in game one of the series.

After the Battalion opened up a 2-0 lead in the first period Rolofs would respond with a pair of goals to bring the gens level.

In the third period, it was Oshawa defenceman Luca Marrelli firing a shot that found its way into the net for his first career playoff goal giving the Gens their first lead of the game.

It was Connor Lockhart giving the Gens some insurance when he was able to find the empty net and make it 4-2.

The North Bay Battalion right-winger is leading the league in points this postseason picking up 17 in 10 games with six goals and 11 assists.

Vilmanis is currently riding a four-game point streak after getting on the bord in game one.

The Oshawa Generals battle from behind to take down the North Bay Battalion in Game One of the Eastern Conference Finals 4-2.

Stuart Rolofs earned himself the first star of the game striking twice for the Gens, Calum Ritchie had a pair of assists, and Connor Lockhart had a goal and an assist. It was Jacob Oster in net for Oshawa and after letting the first two shots in he figured it out stopping 24 shots in a row.

North Bay opened the series scoring as it was Sandis Vilmanis jumping into the playoff lead for points skating the puck down the ice and playing give and go at the blue line before beating Oster making it 1-0 Battalion.

Just under a minute and a half later, the leading goal scorer Dalyn Wakely in the playoffs got on the board taking the puck hard to the net before making a move to the backhand to beat Oster and make it 2-0.

Oshawa would cut the lead in half on a 5-on-3 powerplay as Calum Ritchie’s shot snuck through Mike McIvor and it was Rolofs jumping on the loose puck burying it into an empty net cutting it to 2-1.

The Generals would tie things up at 2-2 in the second period when Lockhart sprung Rolofs on a partial breakaway and the captain made no mistake beating McIvor through the legs.

It was all Gens in the third, as Luca Marrelli scored his first career OHL playoff goal as he fired a shot that managed to squeak through the North Bay netminder making it a 3-2 game.

To cap it all off Calum Ritchie got in on the forecheck stripping the puck from the Battalion defenceman before finding Lockhart in the slot and the overager put the puck in the empty net making it 4-2 Gens.

IN MEMORIAM

On July 30th, the entire Oshawa Generals organization and family was devastated with the news of the passing of long-time scout Michael ‘Craiger’ Craig. Michael unfortunately lost his battle with a rare form of colorectal cancer.

Craiger, as he was known around the rink, was a scout with the Generals’ organization for Eastern Ontario for more than 15 years. He scouted players such as Will Petschenig, Daniel Altshuller, Serron Noel, William Ennis, and current General Matthew Buckley – just to name a few. Michael was also a part of the 2014-2015 Memorial Cup Championship run.

Throughout his career on and off the ice, Michael selflessly helped and assisted so many students, Special Olympic athletes, OHL and minor hockey players – touching and enriching countless lives.

The entire Oshawa Generals organization continues to send their love to entire Craig family, his students, and all of the players who he crossed paths with.

• Colorado Avalanche prospect Calum Ritchie scored twice in just over two minutes to lead the Gens over the 67’s; Ritchie also added a helper on Dylan Roobroeck’s goal

The Ontario Hockey League announced that Derek Laxdal of the Oshawa Generals is the recipient of the Matt Leyden Trophy awarded annually to the OHL’s Coach of the Year

Completing his second season as Head Coach in Oshawa, Laxdal guided the Generals to an exciting finish to the regular season as they rode a 12-game winning streak to the top of the Eastern Conference standings, securing the first seed on the final weekend of the schedule. The Generals played to an Eastern Conference-leading 25-6-4-1 record following the turn of the calendar on January 1st, finishing the 68-game campaign with an overall record of 40-19-7-2.

“To be recognized by your peers is very rewarding not only for me but for the entire organization,” said Laxdal of the honour. “This is truly a reflection of the work of the coaching staff, Steve O’Rourke, Mike Farrugia, Austin Washkurak and the players.

“I would like to thank our Owner Rocco Tullio for the opportunity to coach a team with such a rich tradition, and I would also like to acknowledge General Manager Roger Hunt and the scouting staff for the countless hours spent assembling this talented group of players. The players have grown from day one last year, buying into the culture and playing for each other, day in and day out. It has been very rewarding watching these young men continue to develop on and off the ice daily.

“I’d also like to extend thanks to my wife Hali and daughters Jessica and Jaime for their incredible support.”

Originally from Stonewall, Manitoba, Laxdal boasts a lengthy coaching resume that includes a pair of WHL championships as head coach of the Edmonton Oil Kings from 2010-14, capping his tenure there by hoisting the Memorial Cup. He’s also served as an assistant coach of the NHL’s Dallas Stars from 2019-22 along with head coaching assignments with the AHL’s Texas Stars (2014-20), ECHL’s Idaho Steelheads (2005-10) where he won a Kelly Cup title in 2007, as well as with the CHL’s Wichita Thunder (2002-05). On the ice, Laxdal played 67 career NHL contests between the Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Islanders between 1984-91 as part of a lengthy professional career. A right-winger, his junior career was spent between the WHL’s Portland Winterhawks, Brandon Wheat Kings and New Westminster Bruins as he was an eighth round pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1984. Laxdal represented Canada’s National Junior Team in 1986.

“We are extremely happy for Derek and the entire coaching staff,” said Generals’ President and Governor Rocco Tullio. “They work extremely hard and put in long days so our players can have success both on and off the ice. The development of our players and the success of our team is a direct result of the passion Derek and our coaching staff have for the game of hockey. There is no one more deserving of this award and we could not be more proud and happy for Derek and our team for this prestigious award.”

Laxdal will be the OHL’s nominee for the Brian Kilrea Canadian Hockey League Coach of the Year Award which will be presented at the 2024 Memorial Cup presented by Kia, set to take place in Saginaw, Michigan from May 24th through June 2nd. Laxdal will be formally presented with the Matt Leyden Trophy at the OHL’s Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, June 12th at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

RECOGNIZING THE GENERALS’ GRADUATING PLAYERS

STUART ROLOFS

Rolofs was named the 71st captain in Oshawa Generals history back in September 2023. Drafted in the 1st round, 20th overall in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection by the London Knights, the overager was acquired by the Generals via a trade in December 2021. Entering 2023, Rolofs skated into his third season with Oshawa. During the 2021-2022 season, Rolofs appeared in 47 games with the Generals, scoring 13 goals and adding 26 assists, for 39 points. Rolofs had his most successful season on record the next year, appearing in 62 games, scoring 32 goals and 29 assists for a career-high 61 points. His career-best season recently earned him an invite to the Ottawa Senator’s development camp. This season, the Carp, ON native has wrapped up his regular season with 64 games played, leading his team in goals with 32, and collecting 26 assists. With a total of 58 points, Rolofs has taken his leadership role both on and off of the ice.

“It’s been an honour to be the captain. It’s helped me grow as a player and a person. Being a leader comes with more responsibility as you need to set the right example and be a role model for your teammates,” says Rolofs.

As his final season with the Generals and in the OHL, this will be one to remember. Leading the team as far as he can is ideal to savour every moment and wrap up his junior hockey career with pride.

CONNOR PUNNETT

Acquired by the Barrie Colts back before the January trade deadline, Connor Punnett came to the Generals in exchange for overage defenceman, Thomas Stewart, a 2025 3rd-round pick, and a 2027 6th-round pick. The Powassan, Ont., native, was originally drafted by the Saginaw Spirit as the 19th overall pick in the first round of the 2019 OHL Priority Selection before being traded to Barrie in 2020.

Wrapping his career up with 247 games under his OHL belt, Punnett has 120 points with 32 goals and 88 assists. In 15 playoff games, he has scored 1 goal and 3 assists for 4 points with the Colts. He has brought immense leadership to the Gens squad and was immediately a favourite of GensNation, after his home-ice debut was accompanied by a Gordie Howe hat trick, with a goal, assist and a scrap. His presence and leadership are evident not just in the backend, but with the community, staff, and players as well.

CONNOR LOCKHART

The Oshawa Generals acquired overage forward Connor Lockhart from the Peterborough Petes back on November 3rd and was drafted by the Erie Otters with the 3rd overall pick in the 1st round of the 2019 OHL Priority Selection. Lockhart spent two seasons with the Otters, including his rookie season. In his first year in the OHL, he scored nine goals and 18 assists for 27 points. The following season, he almost doubled his offensive output, amassing 48 points in 64 games, with 23 goals and 25 assists.The Kanata, Ont., at the 2021 NHL Draft was selected 178th overall in the sixth round by the Vancouver Canucks. He was traded to the Peterborough Petes ahead of the 2022-2023 season and upon joining the Petes, his production continued to increase. Last season, he appeared in 66 regular season games, scoring a career-high 29 goals and 50 assists, finishing the year with 79 points. He added another 16 points in 23 playoff games as part of the Petes 2023 OHL Championship run. At the 2023 Memorial Cup, Lockhart added two goals and one assist in five games. For the Oshawa Generals, Lockhart has made an impact with 45 games played, scoring 26 goals paired with 26 assists, for a total of 52 points. Lockhart’s maturity and experience have rubbed off on the younger Generals and he will be known as a leader who came to Oshawa proving himself with a successful OHL career.

On April 12th, the Oshawa Generals looked ahead to the 2024/2025 season. After Rounds 1-3, the Generals welcomed three new members to GensNation.

Brady Smith

The Oshawa Generals opened the 2024 OHL Priority Selection with the 17th overall selection, where they selected Brady Smith, from the North York Rangers. In 33 games with the Rangers, Smith totalled 32 goals, 27 assists, and 59 points. Scouts note that Smith is one of the purest goal scorers in this year’s Priority Selection and has a shot that is second to none, he is extremely accurate with it and his release is at another level as he catches a lot of goalies off guard. He is a good skater and when he decides to turn it on, he has the ability to beat defenders wide and win races for loose pucks. He can find open ice in the offensive zone and is dangerous whenever he has the puck on his stick in the scoring areas. His scoring abilities make him a very intriguing prospect as he will have no trouble scoring at the next level.

Brooks Rogowski

In the Second Round, the Oshawa Generals selected the first US pick of 2024, Brooks Rogowski from Detroit Catholic Central. With 25 games played, Rogowski earned 19 goals and 24 assists for a total of 43 points overall. Scouts indicate that Rogowski is a big, physical force and an intimidating body on the ice. A tough centreman to play against, Rogowski will enter Oshawa with a solid foundation, being in a US hockey school system, where they attend and develop to become future stars on the ice.

Brady Blaseg

47th overall, the Oshawa Generals made their final pick of the evening in Round 3 when they chose Brady Blaseg from the Ottawa Myers Auto. A 6’2 offensive defenceman, Blaseg wore a ‘C’ for his team and is a guy who plays the game the right way, has a long reach and owns a physical style of play. Plays the puck well and owns the ice with his presence, Blaseg has a great vision for countless opportunities for himself and his teammates, making a great addition to the Oshawa Generals Hockey Club.
