w ith nationw ide circulation w ere Istoki and N ash Golos. Both focus on the life of the Jew ish com m unity in Moldova, and publish all their m aterials in Russian. Ukrainian-language m edia are underdeveloped even though this is the second largest ethnic group after Moldovans. The Chisinau-based Ukrainian-language Ukrainski Golos depends on private donations for existence, and these are not enough to ensure that the paper w ith a circulation of 3,000 copies appears regularly. Promini, a Ukrainian-language new spaper published in the northern tow n of Balti, is also issued irregularly.15 The situation is sim ilar in the Bulgarian-language press. Rodno Slovo, the new spaper of the Bulgarian society in Moldova ceased publication som e three years ago because of lack of funds. Insufficient funding has also ham pered the publication of Blgarski Glas in the southern tow n of Taraclia. Since its foundation in 1991, only 50 issues of the new spaper have been published. There is no full-tim e staff w orking for the publication, and new issues appear w hen private donations are m ade. In 2002, the attem pts of local authorities to subsidize the paper only had a lim ited effect – even though support for 12 issues had been pledged, funding for just 3 issues w as secured. 16 Several local broadcasters have program m es in Bulgarian.
