It was founded in the year 1639 by the Portuguese Jesuit Bartolomé Castaño, under the name of San Pedro de Aconchi, as a religious mission, with the purpose of evangelizing the Opata tribes that lived in thatplaceatthetimeoftheconquest.

Its name comes from the indigenous language of the ópata, originally from the word Acotzi which is interpreted as "In the walls", it comes from the linguistic roots Aco which means "wall" and Tzi which means "in place".
