EXPLORATION AND MAPPING There is nothing so gripping and at the same time so intangible as a first impression: the first glance from a high mountain or the sudden awareness of the harmony of colours.

When Petrarca climbs the Mont Ventoux on April 26th of 1336, he is the first to put down in his traveller’s log such an experience ‘for the sake of experience itself’: ‘At first, owing to the unaccustomed quality of the air and the effect of the great sweep of view spread out before me, I stood like one dazed. I beheld the clouds under our feet, and what I had read of Athos and Olympus seemed less incredible as I myself witnessed the same things from a mountain of less fame.’ Petrarca’s view into the distance begets the depth of perception.

Similarly, some 300 years later, Newton drilled a hole in a window shutter and caught the incoming light with a prism that showed him separation of sunlight into all the colours of the rainbow. This experiment led to new and far-reaching insights. In both cases, reality is consciously experienced, explored and mapped in a systematic manner.

How do we explore the world and the reality around us? For a long time it was simply a matter of putting one foot in front of the other. By walking, every distance eventually becomes proximity. That what lies in the distance and is open to multiple and often contradictory explanations, takes on form and meaning once we get closer to it. This process of clarification seems to be the goal of explorers and cartographers, but for the scientist and artist, it is just the beginning.

PASSAGE AND PROGRESS As an artist, Oscar Lourens has maintained his fascination for exploration and discovery and given it a central role in his work. The theme of passage and progress is fundamental in many of his works.

In 2004, Oscar Lourens placed a sign with the text LA LUE 629 KM. Numerous others followed, both within the Netherlands and abroad. The network that emerged, indicated the various distances from the signpost to La Lue, the farmstead in Central France that functioned as the network’s centre and focal point. In La Lue, Irma and Henk, friends of the artist, have created their own pleasant world in which they live and work. Oscar Lourens has taken this spot as departure point for a large collection of works.

In the elaborate La Lue-project the actuality that constitutes the four buildings of the farmstead is transformed into four card-index boxes. The thousands of paper cards with their razor sharp cuttings of the interior proportions of the buildings enables the spectator to enter the buildings in a different way. The stroll through the buildings now takes the form of fingers running through the cards. In untitled (La Lue - film) from 2002, a 55 minutes journey through the paper card cuttings is projected on the wall, reinstating the sensation of the original, architectural size. The passage is staged through a slow, fluent movement in which the details of the interior space are revealed. The spectator is enveloped in a world of white phases. The cinematic approach, in which experience and suggestion enforce each other within the strict time frame of the film, dissolves this architecture again in the light of the projection.

CARTOGRAPHY OF DISCREPANCY This peculiar merging of analysis and suspense is typical for the approach of Oscar Lourens. Suspense, like that of Hitchcock’s films, acknowledges the

VERKENNEN EN IN KAART BRENGEN Niets dat zo indringend en tegelijkertijd zo ongrijpbaar kan zijn als een eerste gewaarwording. De eerste blik vanaf een hoge berg of de eerste bewustwording van de samenhang van de kleuren.

Wanneer Petrarca op 26 april 1336 de Mont Ventoux beklimt is hij de eerste die zo’n ervaring ‘om de ervaring zelf’ in een reisverslag vastlegt: ‘Eerst stond ik daar als een verdwaasde, overweldigd door de ongewone atmosfeer en het onbelemmerde uitzicht. Ik kijk om me heen; een wolkendek was onder mijn voeten. En nu ik op een minder beroemde berg met eigen ogen zag wat ik gehoord en gelezen had over de Athos en de Olympus, werden die bergen ineens veel minder onwezenlijk voor mij.’ Een blik in de verte krijgt hier de verdieping van een gewaarwording. Dit is ook het geval wanneer zo’n 300 jaar later Newton in een doorboord vensterluik de binnenvallende lichtbundel opvangt met een geslepen prisma en zo het witte licht uiteen ziet vallen in een kleurencirkel op de muur. Dit ongekende beeld opende nieuwe, verreikende, inzichten. In beide gevallen wordt de werkelijkheid hier bewust ondergaan, systematisch verkend en in kaart gebracht.

Want hoe verkennen wij de wereld, de werkelijkheid rondom ons? De meest beproefde methode bleef lange tijd toch het plaatsen van het ene been voor z.t. (signpost no. 3), 2004

het andere. In de wandeling wordt iedere verte uiteindelijk nabijheid. Dat wat op afstand nog openstaat voor diverse, dikwijls tegenstrijdige, duidingen neemt eenmaal dichterbij gekomen onvermijdelijk zijn eigen onvervreemdbare gedaante aan. Waar voor de (ontdekkings)reiziger en de cartograaf hiermee het belangrijkste doel lijkt bereikt, blijkt voor de wetenschapper en de kunstenaar dit slechts het startpunt te zijn van weer nieuwe verkenningen.

PASSAGE EN VOORTGANG Oscar Lourens heeft als kunstenaar de fascinatie voor de ontdekkingsreis weten te behouden en in zijn werk een permanente plaats gegeven. Het gegeven van passage en voortgang komt in veel van zijn werken terug.

In 2004 plaatste Oscar Lourens een bordje met de aanduiding LA LUE 629 KM. Een bordje dat gevolgd zou worden door talloze andere in binnen- en buitenland.

Voorzien van wisselende afstandsmaten doemt zo een steeds verder vertakkend netwerk op waarbij het in centraal Frankrijk gelegen La Lue als spil en ijkpunt blijkt te figureren. Dit aldaar gelegen boerderijcomplex, waar zijn vrienden Irma en Henk een aangenaam eigen wereld hebben ingericht waarin wonen en werken op bijzondere wijze samenvallen, heeft Oscar Lourens tot vertrekpunt genomen van een uitgebreid werkcomplex.

In het omvattende La Lue-project wordt de werkelijkheid van vier bouwwerken omgezet in evenzovele kaartenbakken. De duizenden kaarten met hun haarscherpe uitsneden van de binnenmaten van de architectuur maken het mogelijk deze plekken op een nieuwe wijze te betreden. De wandeling neemt nu plaats via de vingers en hun gang door de kaartenbak. In z.t. (La Lue - film) uit 2002, wordt via projectie op de wand zelfs een architecturale maat voelbaar en maken we als toeschouwer een 55 minuten durende wandeling door de gebouwen. De voortgang wordt hier zodanig geënsceneerd dat in een trage drempelloze beweging de diverse ruimtelijke details in deze passage worden onthuld. Hierbij gaat de toeschouwer op in een wereld van witte (schijn) gestalten. Deze filmische benadering van de architectuur waarin beleving en suggestie elkaar versterken binnen een strikt tijdskader, laat deze architectuur ook weer oplossen in het licht van de projectie.

Even though Oscar Lourens uses methods that seem to originate from the world of architecture or scientific research, Oscar Lourens calls upon a ‘reality beyond’: a reality in which the concepts of ‘measuring’ and ‘understanding’ have a much more complex relation to each other.

Looking at Oscar Lourens’ work, it is clear that in each project measurements play a key role. Whether contemplating the Bruges-project (1999), in which on the façade of a public building the surface area in square metres of the rooms behind the windows is written down, or the exhibition ‘Paperworks‘ (Arnhem, 2007) in which his own studio is rebuilt on a 1:1 scale in A3 sheets on a pinewood frame, the measurements are crucial. The exact recreation in paper, wood, cardboard, models and signs of the architectural reality of spaces, volumes, heights and depths, always produce a new reality. It is exactly the distance that emerges between our perception of reality and the exactness of the reproduction of its sizes that typifies his work. It seems as if the goal of Oscar Lourens is to make this tension tangible. One could speak of a ‘cartography of discrepancy’, in which an almost Cartesian poetry emerges between the real object and the artist’s ‘copy’. The accurate translation of an architectural reality into a model duplicate turns out to be a commentary on the physical sensation of space that proofs to be much more plastic than one realised.

A return to the locations of our childhood years always creates amazement about the sizes of rooms, hallways or gardens. These deviate considerably from the images engrained in our memories. Likewise, the precise way in which Oscar Lourens translates actual objects to depersonalised quantities like size, rhythm and volume, offers room to the spectator. Hereby, he strips memory of its anecdotal and historical burden and returns it to the spectator as an open and accessible image.

THE CONCEPTUAL SPACE With his work, Oscar Lourens places himself in the tradition of conceptual art as it developed from the 1960s onwards. Stanley Brouwn, Hanne Darboven and On Kawara have separated, each in their own unique way, the artwork from the usual sphere of expression and emotion and returned it into the realm of initial awe. The openness in which a child asks questions about the world and reality, but also the scientist’s structured elaboration of such questions, are at the base of this kind of art. For example, the sequence of works in which Stanley Brouwn connects the size of his own footsteps with the uniform metric system reveals a new way of dealing with the phenomenon of ‘a walk’. Whereas from the Romantic period onwards, walking has constituted an individual or philosophical and above all an emotional connection between reality and experience, Stanley Brouwn’s work shows a clash between the crystalline reality of the number and the conflicting sensation of personal experience.

In 2003, Oscar Lourens created the publication (in an edition of fifty) portraits of spaces (after stanley brouwn) in which he describes each room in the La Lue farmstead in measurable sizes. The surface area, the square metres and the cubic metres are conscientiously registered. This creates a tangible discrepancy between the objectivity of these measurements and the individuality that each of these spaces nonetheless possesses - a character that is enforced by the title portraits of spaces. The objectivity of the measured sizes is employed to depict the ‘individuality’ or ‘uniqueness’ of the separate rooms.

CARTOGRAFIE VAN DE DISCREPANTIE Dit eigenaardige samengaan van analyse en suspense is typerend voor Oscar Lourens’ aanpak. Suspense zoals Hitchcock die ook in zijn films inzette, kent een belangrijke positie toe aan de toeschouwer. Hij is het die vanuit een actief participerende positie de dynamiek van de georchestreerde suggestie in de film vervolmaakt.

Ook al maakt hij hier gebruik van methoden van onderzoek en aanpak die eerder afkomstig lijken te zijn uit de wereld van de wetenschapper en de architect, toch roept hij zo een werkelijkheid op die breder lijkt te liggen. Een werkelijkheid waarin de begrippen meten en weten een veel complexere relatie met elkaar aangaan.

Dat in ieder werk maten een hoofdrol spelen blijkt overduidelijk. Of dat nu is in het project in Brugge (1999) waar aan de gevel van een openbaar gebouw de oppervlakten in vierkante meters leesbaar zijn aangebracht van de ruimten die zich achter de vensters bevinden. Of in de tentoonstelling ‘Paperworks’ (Arnhem, 2007) waarin zijn eigen atelier schaal 1:1 wordt herschapen in A3 papiervellen op een vurenhouten frame. De minutieuze herschepping van een architecturale werkelijkheid die bestaat uit ruimtes, volumes, hoogtes en dieptes in kaarten, borden, vellen papier en modellen, levert bij Oscar Lourens altijd een nieuwe werkelijkheid op. Het is juist de afstand die blijkt te zitten tussen de exacte maten van deze werken en de werkelijkheid van onze beleving die zijn werk karakteriseert. Het lijkt erop dat Oscar Lourens juist deze tastbare spanning een plaats wil geven. Je zou kunnen spreken van een ‘cartografie van de discrepantie’ waarbij een (cartesiaanse) poëzie vrijkomt tussen de werkelijkheid en zijn in kaart gebrachte ‘dubbel’. De precieze herschepping van een architecturale werkelijkheid in een modelmatig opgezet duplicaat levert vooral een commentaar op de fysieke beleving van ruimte. Deze blijkt veel elastischer te zijn dan we ons realiseren. Een terugkeer naar de locaties van onze kinderjaren roept bijvoorbeeld altijd een verbazing op over de maten van kamers, gangen of tuinen. Ze wijken aanmerkelijk af van de in onze herinnering verankerde beelden. De nauwkeurige manier waarop Oscar Lourens de door hem in kaart gebrachte werkelijkheden vertaalt naar gedepersonaliseerde z.t. grootheden als maat, ritme en volume biedt ruimte aan de beschouwer. Hij ontdoet hier de herinnering van zijn anekdotische en historische balast en geeft hem als open en toegankelijk beeld terug aan de beschouwer.

DE CONCEPTUELE RUIMTE Met zijn werk plaatst Oscar Lourens zich in de traditie van de conceptuele kunst zoals die zich sinds de jaren zestig heeft ontwikkeld. Stanley Brouwn, Hanne Darboven en On Kawara hebben ieder op geheel eigen wijze het kunstwerk onttrokken aan de gangbare expressief-emotionele sfeer en herplaatst in de context van de primaire verwondering. De openheid waarmee een kind vragen stelt over de wereld en de werkelijkheid, maar ook het gestructureerde vervolg dat de wetenschapper hier aan geeft, staan aan de basis van deze kunst. De reeks werken waarin Stanley Brouwn de maat van zijn eigen voetstap in verbinding brengt met het uniforme metrische systeem onthult een nieuwe omgang met het fenomeen ‘wandeling’. Waar sinds de Romantiek het wandelen toch vooral een individuele of filosofische maar vooral emotionele connectie legt tussen werkelijkheid en ervaring, daar wordt in zijn werk juist de botsing in kaart gebracht tussen de kristallijne werkelijkheid van het getal en de daarmee conflicterende sensatie van de persoonlijke ervaring.

Numbers play a similar central role in the work of Hanne Darboven. The series, of often hand-written numbers, constitute works of art in which besides the given number also texts, pictures or postcards are used.

The systematic accumulation of numbers provides these fragments-of-reality with an element of time. Without settling herself within a mathematical or scientific practise, Hanne Darboven uses those methods. Not only the aesthetic challenge of a systematic approach but also the liberating notion of a system open to time and space confronts every narrow scientific definition. An example is the project Kinder dieser Welt (Stuttgart, 1997). In 222 books she systematically questions the twentieth century by depicting toys with sequences of numbers based on the calendar. Hereby she connects the ‘the child as vehicle of hope’, through toys she collected from all over the globe, with an inevitable temporality. In this confrontation lies an explosive and liberating force. In the work of Hanne Darboven one remains conscious of the principally disrupting power of systematically and persistently asking a seemingly simple question.

In a similar fashion to Darboven, Oscar Lourens also uses the intoxication effect of huge quantities to overwhelm the spectator. He also draws upon the aesthetic compelling force of a sequence of works. Even a casual glance on the thousands of paper cut-outs that populate the card-index boxes of the La Lue buildings are testimony to this force.

On Kawara’s work is about a positioning in time and space following a strictly systematic approach. Whether considering his Date Paintings, in which the painting is solely the registration of a date in time, or his post cards with the message ‘I got up at’ plus the time he rose from his bed, in all his works he emphasises the inevitable passing of time When he sends telegrams with the message ‘I am still alive’ he does not only answer an unasked question, he also points in a slightly disturbing way to the possibility of the opposite of this remark.

The way in which On Kawara, in his project One Million Years (Past) (1969) and One Million Years (Future) (1980) in twenty books, ranks two million years (one million counting down into the past and another million adding up into the future) seems to receive a subtle reply in Oscar Lourens’ untitled (Bibliothèque de l’architecture III) from 2004. In this work, the total area of all the La Lue buildings are laid out in A3 paper sheets, which are bound in thirty-five books.

The universal, chronological ordering of Kawara meets the personal filing system of Oscar Lourens in which he connects place and space, abstraction and reality all within a single stage, namely the book.

ACCESS TO AN INCREMENTALLY GROWING DOMAIN When Oscar Lourens measures the buildings of his choice and transforms them into card-index boxes, models, books or area indications, he also reports about his relation to these locations and buildings. The locations we visit nowadays as consumer or tourist pass us by in increasing speed and, due to the media and internet, in an almost immaterial way. Although we are all able to relive our many, often elaborate visits of faraway places, in the end less and less of it seems to make us pause to contemplate our thinking and acting.

In contrast, the work of Oscar Lourens makes his meetings with (architectural) spaces, surface areas and distances very concrete. His work unfolds itself as a domain of experience that accumulates but also deepens over the years.

In 2003 realiseerde Oscar Lourens in een oplage van vijftig de publicatie portraits of spaces (after stanley brouwn) waarin hij iedere ruimte of kamer in het La Lue-complex benoemt in meetbare termen. De oppervlakte, de vierkante meters en de kubieke meters worden nauwkeurig opgeschreven ter identificatie. Dit levert een tastbare spanning op tussen de objectiviteit van deze maten en de individualiteit die iedere ruimte niettemin representeert, hetgeen versterkt wordt door de titel portraits of spaces. De objectiviteit van de maten wordt hier ingezet om de ‘eigenheid’ of ‘individualiteit’ van iedere kamer in beeld te brengen.

Ook in het werk van Hanne Darboven nemen getallen een belangrijke plaats in.

De aaneenschakeling van dikwijls handgeschreven getallenreeksen leveren in haar geval werken op waarin naast de genoemde getallen ook tekstdelen, foto’s of postkaarten worden betrokken.

De systematische accumulatie van getallen voorziet deze ‘afbeeldende’ werkelijkheidsfragmenten zo van een tijdscomponent. Zonder zich te willen schikken in een mathematische of wetenschappelijke praxis, past Hanne Darboven echter wel methoden toe, afkomstig uit deze bereiken. Niet alleen de esthetische uitdaging van een systematische benadering maar ook de bevrijdende notie van een zich naar tijd en ruimte openend systeem knaagt aan iedere gesloten wetenschappelijke definitie. Een voorbeeld is het project Kinder dieser Welt (Stuttgart, 1997). In 222 boeken ondervraagt ze systematisch de twintigste eeuw middels op de kalender gebaseerde getallenreeksen met afbeeldingen van kinderspeelgoed. Visueel verbindt ze zo ‘het kind’ als drager van hoop, via haar wereldwijd aangeschafte collectie kinderspeelgoed, met een onvermijdelijke temporaliteit. In de confrontatie tussen beide schuilt een explosieve en openende kracht. Met Hanne Darboven blijf je je altijd bewust van de principieel ontregelende kracht die besloten ligt in het systematisch en uitgebreid stellen van een ogenschijnlijk eenvoudige vraag.

Net zoals Darboven iedere keer de bijna bedwelmende overdaad van de reeks inzet om de toeschouwer te overrompelen, zo lijkt Oscar Lourens zich bewust te zijn van de esthetische overredingskracht van de reeks. Alleen al een blik op de kaartenbakken en de duizenden vellen papier in zijn werk laat dit zien.

Bij On Kawara is sprake van een tijd-ruimtepositionering binnen het kader van een strikte systematiek. In al zijn werken benadrukt hij de onvermijdelijk voortschrijdende tijd, of het nu zijn Date Paintings zijn, waarin het schilderij enkel de drager is van de daarop aangebrachte datum, of de ansichtkaarten voorzien van de mededeling ‘I got up at’, voorzien van de tijd van opstaan.

Wanneer hij telegrammen verstuurt, voorzien van de mededeling ‘I am still alive’ geeft hij niet alleen antwoord op een niet gestelde vraag, maar hij wijst zo ook op licht ontregelende wijze de ontvanger op de mogelijke keerzijde van deze mededeling.

De wijze waarop On Kawara in zijn project One Million Years (Past) (1969) en One Million Years (Future) (1980) in twintig gebonden boeken tweemaal een miljoen jaartallen uit het verleden en de toekomst bijeenbrengt lijkt een subtiel antwoord te krijgen in het werk van Oscar Lourens z.t. remarkable way the ‘pure’ and detached method of describing, whereas he actually debarks is on a very personal journey of exploration. Combining the wonder that typifies both the child and the explorer with the systematic precision of the scientist, Oscar Lourens makes art out of the sites that come across his path. The results are highly material works of art that direct our views to the elusive experiences connected to them and that confront us in such a charming way with the coordinates of experience.

DE TOEGANG TOT EEN STAPSGEWIJS GROEIEND DOMEIN Wanneer Oscar Lourens de door hem bezochte en uitgekozen gebouwen opmeet en omzet in kaartenbakken, maquettes, boeken of oppervlakteaanduidingen, dan brengt hij zo ook verslag uit van zijn relatie tot deze locaties en gebouwen. De plekken die wij vandaag de dag als consument en toerist bezoeken, passeren in een steeds toenemende omloopsnelheid waarbij de media en internet onze reizen in een welhaast immaterieel bereik trekken.

Ook al kan tegenwoordig iedereen terugblikken op een divers en uitgebreid bezoek van dikwijls ver gelegen plaatsen of ‘sites’, op de keper beschouwd blijft er steeds minder hangen dat daadwerkelijk ons denken of handelen lijkt te beïnvloeden.

De werken van Oscar Lourens daarentegen concretiseren zijn ontmoetingen met (architectonische) ruimtes, oppervlaktes en afstanden. Zijn werk ontvouwt zich zo als een door de jaren heen accumulerend belevingsdomein. Een uitdijend maar niettemin verbonden totaal waarbij hij op wonderlijke wijze een zuivere, onthechte methode van beschrijven centraal stelt waar het in feite een persoonlijke ontdekkingstocht betreft. Vanuit de verwondering van het kind en de ontdekkingsreiziger, maar met de systematische precisie van de wetenschapper weet Oscar Lourens zijn kunstenaarsschap zo te verbinden met de dagelijkse zaken die zijn pad kruisen.

Het is vanuit deze hoogst materieel ogende werken dat onze blik wordt gericht op de ongrijpbare belevingen die er onlosmakelijk mee verbonden zijn en die de toeschouwer zo op innemende wijze confronteert met de coördinaten van de beleving.

IMAGINATION IN POWER To possess is to have power. Those who strive to have or hold power, strive to own objects or people. One successful way of obtaining power is to - figuratively or actually - model the object one wishes to dominate. One reduces people to docile subjects or one miniaturises objects or areas to models or maps. Therefore, people in power enjoy studying the maps of to-be-colonised territories or the cardboard models and structures of real estate and city plans. Those who dwell in the miniature world of dollhouses or model trains are the queens and kings of an infinite world.

Artists are usually not seen as people in power. But when the French cultural philosopher Claude Lévi-Strauss defined, in his book La pensée sauvage (The Savage Mind, Paris 1962), the work of art as a miniature model, he explains there has to be a connection between art and power. According to LéviStrauss, the miniature model is characterised by a drastic reduction of the original features of the object. This doesn’t imply a model has to be small: a monumental church can be a model of a reality of cosmic proportions.

Even a photo, painting or sculpture at actual size is, according to Lévi-Strauss, a model because it strips the object of many of its properties. It is the reduction in either size or in characteristics that makes the model appealing to the spectator. Lévi-Strauss explains it like this: ‘In the case of miniatures, in contrast to what happens when we try to understand an object or living creature of real dimensions, knowledge of the whole precedes knowledge of the parts. And even if this is an illusion, the point of the procedure is to create or sustain the illusion, which gratifies the intelligence and gives rise to a sense of pleasure which can already be called aesthetic on these grounds alone.’ 1 In other words, the model puts the imagination in power.

POSSESSING ARCHITECTURE A stroll through a town centre to view its buildings often is a special experience for me. The dynamics of the city plan, with its streets and squares, are a physical experience that awakens the senses. A journey through its little streets and alleys, busy markets and docks, monumental squares and stately avenues is a grander spectacle than the rollercoaster in an amusement park. Some buildings provide, with their labyrinths of hallways, stairs and rooms, and their intrinsic flow of short and long lines of vision, a similar experience. And like any special experience, one wants to foster it, even long after one has left the city or the building. I tried several instruments to reduce or ‘possess’ the architecture of a city or building, such as illustrations, plans, pictures and blueprints.

Recently, when visiting the exhibition of graduate students of the Design Academy of Eindhoven, I saw a new instrument that appealed to me: cardboard boxes that unfold to become the city plans of Paris, London or Berlin, and on which you can place, among others, a simplified model of the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomph, the Tower Bridge and the Brandenburger Tor. Only, once back home these instruments just aren’t powerful enough to create the desired illusion of possession. Despite their initial appeal, they aren’t works of art capable of reducing the architectonical space in a meaningful way. What remains is a one-dimensional projection of what once mesmerised me - the space has escaped me. And it is exactly the physical and sensory experience of space that is essential to architecture. It is an experience that is intrinsically linked to the body. This is the paradox of possessing space: is it possible to possess space in an architectonical model in which the human body is the measure of things?

Een goed middel hiertoe is het letterlijk of figuurlijk ‘verkleinen’: je kleineert mensen tot gewillige onderdanen, je miniaturiseert de wereld van de dingen tot maquettes en landkaarten. Machthebbers staan graag gebogen over landkaarten van te koloniseren of te veroveren gebieden of over de kartonnen bouwsels en plattegronden van stedenbouwkundige plannen. Wie verkeert in de miniatuurwereld van poppenhuizen, modelspoorwegen of Madurodam voelt zich koning of koningin van een oneindige wereld.

Kunstenaars worden niet snel gezien als machthebbers. Maar wanneer de Franse cultuurfilosoof Claude Lévi-Strauss in zijn boek La pensée sauvage (Parijs 1962) het kunstwerk definieert als miniatuurmodel, moet er wel een verband bestaan tussen kunst en macht. Het miniatuurmodel kenmerkt zich volgens Lévi-Strauss door een drastische reductie van de oorspronkelijke eigenschappen. Het model hoeft dus naar menselijke maatstaven niet ‘klein’ te zijn: een monumentaal kerkgebouw kan een model zijn van een kosmische werkelijkheid. Zelfs een fotografische, schilder- of beeldhouwkunstige voorstelling op ware grootte, vat hij op als een miniatuurmodel omdat het de werkelijkheid reduceert met verlies van een groot aantal eigenschappen van het oorspronkelijke object. Dat gereduceerde model, in maat en/of in eigenschappen, oefent op mensen een enorme aantrekkingskracht uit. Een kracht die Lévi-Strauss als volgt verklaart: ‘In tegenstelling tot wat er gebeurt wanneer we een ding of een wezen in zijn ware grootte proberen te kennen, gaat in het verkleinde model de kennis van het geheel vooraf aan die van de delen. En zelfs wanneer dit een illusie is, ligt de betekenis van dit proces hierin, dat het deze illusie schept en in stand houdt, een illusie die aan het verstand en het gevoel een genoegen verschaft dat alleen hierom al esthetisch genoemd kan worden.’ 1 Kortom, het miniatuurmodel laat de verbeelding aan de macht.

ARCHITECTUUR BEZITTEN Het slenteren door een stad en het bezichtigen van zijn bouwwerken is voor mij vaak een bijzondere ervaring. De dynamiek van elkaar opeenvolgende straten en pleinen in een stad voelt als een fysieke belevenis waarbij de zintuigen op scherp staan. Spectaculairder dan een achtbaan in een pretpark kan een tocht zijn langs intieme straatjes, monumentale kerkpleinen, Spaanse trappen, drukbezochte markten, stadsparken, havenkades, statige avenues en uitzichten vanaf torens. Niet anders is het met sommige gebouwen die je voeren door een labyrint van gangen, trappen, hallen en zalen waarbij binnen en buiten, korte en lange zichtlijnen en de eigen voortbeweging voor een dynamische beleving zorgen. Zoals met elke bijzondere ervaring wil je deze vast blijven houden, ook lang nadat je gebouw of stad hebt verlaten. Ik heb diverse machtsmiddelen gehanteerd om de architectuur van een stad of een gebouw klein te krijgen: tekeningen, plattegronden, foto’s en bouwplaten van beroemde architectonische monumenten. Onlangs zag ik op de eindexamententoonstelling van Design Academy Eindhoven een nieuw middel dat tot mijn verbeelding sprak: kartonnen dozen die je kon uitvouwen tot de plattegronden van Parijs, Londen of Berlijn en waarop je sterk vereenvoudigde modellen kon plaatsen van onder meer de Eiffeltoren, de Arc de Triomph, de Tower Bridge en de Brandenburger Claude Lévi-Strauss Het Wilde Denken Amsterdam 1990, p 37 1

THE REDUCTION OF SPACE Oscar Lourens is an artist. Since 1996, he has produced models of architectonical spaces he aspires to possess, mostly from a position of personal involvement. These spaces are often part of his day-to-day environment: the places where he eats, sleeps, works or exhibits his work. Lourens tries to ‘seize ownership’ of these spaces through systematic documentation, arrangement and reduction to a smaller, more feasible scale. In one of his first projects (1997), the model is simply a string of words attached to the flood dam of the city of Kampen. On the 1,400 metre long dam, a total of thirty-six words was placed, each providing a summary of the history of the house that lies behind it. Here, the word creates the illusion of a (lost) space. In 1998-1999, the rooms of the city hall in Bruges are no longer characterised by words, but by numbers: on the façade under the windows he gives the exact surface area of the floor of

the room behind it. The spectator doesn’t create his illusion through words but through sizes of rooms instead.

The idea of the surface area of the floor as a representation of space is further elaborated in Lourens’ largest project: La Lue. La Lue is a farmstead of 7 hectares in the French Allier consisting of four buildings, totalling thirty-five rooms. The complex is mapped in several ways.

For example, untitled (Bibliothèque de l’architecture I) (2002), catalogues the exact sizes and blueprints (1:50) of the rooms. Blueprints again play a central role in his project on the lost cultural infrastructure of Arnhem (2001-2002).

The fronts of the art galleries that disappeared in the city are depicted in relief on a 1:20 scale on a trigonal structure, which have been adapted to the size of the original buildings. But I think that with blueprints alone still too little room is left to the architectonical imagination of the spectator.

This seems to be remedied when Lourens designs his second Bibliothèque, consisting of folders filled with simple A4 sheets, blank except for a code referring to the location in the original floorplan. Each folder contains a set of sheets that, when laid out following the codes, covers the exact area of the floor of a single room. In 2006, Oscar Lourens presents untitled (Bibliothèque de l’architecture II) in the exhibition ‘Espaces Relationnels’, together with a wallfilling print showing the laid-out sheets that make the blueprint of the building.

This intriguing image reminds me of one of the ‘silly’ maps of the novel by Lewis Caroll, described in Matthijs van Boxsel’s Encyclopedie van de Domheid (Encyclopaedia of Stupidity): ‘Mein Herr (My Lord) speaks of a map that was repeatedly improved to reach perfection when it was on a 1:1 scale to the country it depicted. The farmers, however, objected to the map because they feared that, once unfolded, the map would cover the fields and block the sunlight. Then someone came along who suggested using the land as its own map.

And to this day, the land performed this function for its inhabitants.’ 2 A better description of the paradox of possessing space isn’t possible.

THE NEGATIVE MODEL In the La Lue-project, Oscar Lourens adopts a new way to map the farmstead.

After meticulous measurements of the rooms, Lourens draws a 3D model of the buildings’ interiors, including the positions of the doors and windows on a 1:50 and 1:100 scale. Subsequently, he applies a technique that can best be described as an analogous version of computer tomography (CT-scans). The complete interior space of the building from front to back is cut out of a series

gereduceerd. Wat rest is een eendimensionale voorstelling van wat ik ooit heb ervaren; de ruimte is me ontsnapt. Juist de fysieke en zintuiglijke ervaring van ruimte is essentieel bij architectuur. Een ervaring die onlosmakelijk is verbonden met het eigen lichaam. Het is de paradox van het ruimtebezit: kun je ruimte bezitten in een architectuurmodel waarbij het eigen lichaam maatgevend is?

REDUCTIE VAN RUIMTE Oscar Lourens is kunstenaar. Sinds 1996 maakt hij miniatuurmodellen van architectonische ruimten die hij zich, veelal vanuit een persoonlijke betrokkenheid, wil toe-eigenen. Lourens probeert bezit te nemen van de ruimten, vooral die waarin hij woont, slaapt, eet, werkt of exposeert, door deze systematisch te documenteren, te ordenen en terug te brengen tot een hanteerbare schaal.

In een van zijn eerste projecten (1997) bestaat het model nog uit een lint van woorden, aangebracht langs de Vloeddijk in Kampen. Elk van de in totaal zesendertig woorden is een samenvatting van de historie die is verbonden aan het betreffende huis op de 1.400 meter lange kade. Het woord schept hier de illusie van een (verloren) ruimte. In 1998-1999 worden de ruimten van het stadhuis in Brugge door Lourens niet meer gevangen in woorden, maar in getallen: aan de buitengevel is onder de ramen het aantal vierkante meters vloeroppervlak aangegeven van de achterliggende ruimten. De toeschouwer schept zijn illusie niet meer door woorden maar door de maten van de diverse vloeren in het gebouw.

De vloeroppervlakken als representatie van de ruimte werkt hij verder uit in zijn meest omvangrijke project: La Lue. La Lue is een boerderijencomplex in de Franse Allier en beslaat 7 hectare grond waarop vier gebouwen zijn gelegen met in totaal vijfendertig vertrekken. Het hele complex wordt op verschillende manieren in kaart gebracht, zoals onder meer in z.t.(Bibliothèque de l’architecture I) uit 2002 waarin alle exacte maatvoeringen en plattegronden (schaal 1:50) van de vertrekken zijn opgenomen. In zijn project over de verdwenen culturele infrastructuur van Arnhem (2001-2002), spelen plattegronden opnieuw een hoofdrol. Van de verdwenen galeries in Arnhem worden de plattegronden gecombineerd met voorgevels (schaal 1:20) getoond in reliëf op zogenaamde driehoeksborden in de stad, waarbij de maat van de borden telkens is aangepast aan de maatvoering van het betreffende pand. Maar alleen met plattegronden en opstanden krijgt mijns inziens de beschouwer nog (te) weinig ruimte voor de architectonische verbeelding.

Die ruimte wordt tastbaarder wanneer Lourens voor La Lue een tweede bibliotheek ontwerpt, bestaande uit onder meer ordnermappen met blanco vellen A4-papier waarop steeds een codering is aangebracht die refereert aan de werkelijke ruimte. Iedere map bevat precies de hoeveelheid hele en deels bijgesneden A4-vellen die naast elkaar gelegd het vloeroppervlak van een vertrek vormen. lende print waarop de uitgelegde A4-vellen in de vorm van de vertrekken zijn te zien. Een reductie van de architectuur tot een geprinte afbeelding van een één op één plattegrond. Dat intrigerende beeld doet me denken aan één van de ‘domme’ landkaarten afkomstig uit een novelle van Lewis Caroll die Matthijs van Boxsel beschrijft in zijn Encyclopedie van de Domheid: ‘Mijn Herr verhaalt over een plattegrond die net zolang werd geperfectioneerd tot hij een schaal van één op één met het land bereikte. De boeren maakten er evenwel bezwaar

of firm (250 grams) A4 sheets. Placed behind each other in a card-index box, the sheets form a negative model: a template of the architectonical space through which one can make an illusionary journey through the house by flipping through the cards.

What an idea! Lourens provides us with a razor sharp (or more appropriately, a paper-cut) image of the paradox. Like in a traditional architectonical model, Lourens reduces the architecture primarily to an organisation of space. Features such as texture, colour and material are eliminated. The great difference is that, although Lourens loses the working of the light (for there are no openings for the windows since the space is enclosed in paper), Lourens maintains the element of movement. And movement is intrinsically linked to experiencing space.

For his Zonnehof-project (2007) Lourens creates various different models: one card-index box with cut out paper sheets, one traditional architectural model and two closed models that look rather massive. One of the latter is what would emanate when the space in the negative model were to be filled. In the closed models every possibility to experience the space through movement has disappeared. In addition to the models of the Zonnehof, Oscar Lourens takes pictures of the interior of the negative model, of which prints are exhibited on aluminium frames. These pictures, however, lack the physical experience of movement offered by the card-index boxes when one flips the cards through space.

In his untitled (La Lue - film) from 2002 he uses pictures of the negative model to enlarge the space back to human dimensions in order to escape the small and narrow space of the card-index box. The paper ‘CT-scans’ are photographed frontally and projected one after the other in a fixed time interval and on a big screen. The result is a film, a slow movement, that draws the spectator into the space of the building until the last sheet of paper evaporates, as it were, in the white glow of the projector light. With this Oscar Lourens again introduces movement in his architectural models. However, the projection remains too small (it is not 1:1) and the movement too slow to be able to truly speak of an experience of space.

A BIRD’S-EYE VIEW Oscar Lourens exhibited parts of the La Lue-project on various occasions and in several locations. In some of these exhibitions he added a sign with the distance and the direction of the exhibition site to the La Lue farmstead. Similarly, to his earlier projects he used words and numbers to refer to real, physical spaces. But this time the reference wasn’t to the architecture of La Lue, but to the distance that separates the spectator of the exhibition to the real object, the farmstead in France. In search of new ways to get a grip on space, Oscar Lourens developed a plan, in the summer of 2007, to release carrier pigeons in La Lue and register the flight back to the Netherlands. For this occasion, one of the pigeons is equipped with an especially designed lightweight GPS system, which enables Lourens to reconstruct the flight on a map. Once known, he will follow the same route with a small aircraft to photograph from La Lue to the Netherlands. This photo series can then be reworked into a film that again introduces movement in the experience of space. Unfortunately, the pigeon never made it home and Lourens has to wait for a new flight season to continue the project.

Ten slotte kwam iemand op het idee het land te gebruiken als zijn eigen kaart; en tot op heden heeft het land voor zijn inwoners deze rol vervuld.’ 2 Beter kan de paradox van het ruimtebezit niet worden verwoord.

EEN NEGATIEVE MAQUETTE Bij het La Lue-project hanteert Lourens een nieuw middel om het boerderijencomplex in kaart te brengen. Na een minutieuze meting van de ruimten worden vloeroppervlakten, hoogtes, posities van ramen en deuren, dikten van muren en dergelijke op schaal getekend (1:50 of 1:100). Vervolgens past Lourens een soort analoge computertomografie (CT-scans) toe op zijn model: de hele ruimte, van voor- tot achtergevel, wordt opgebouwd uit stevige A4-vellen (250 grams) waaruit exact de maten van de binnenruimte worden gesneden. Wanneer alle losse vellen achter elkaar in een kaartenbak van gelakt MDF worden geplaatst, ontstaat een soort negatief van een maquette: een ‘mal’ van de architectonische ruimte waardoor je je al lopend met je vingers over de bladen illusionair kunt bewegen.

Een vondst! Lourens voert hier de paradox op tot het scherp van de papiersnede. Overeenkomstig de kwaliteiten van normale maquettes, reduceert Lourens de architectuur tot voornamelijk een organisatie van ruimte. Elementen als bijvoorbeeld textuur, kleur en materialen worden geëlimineerd. Het grote verschil is dat Lourens bij zijn negatieve maquettes weliswaar de werking van het licht verliest (er zijn geen uitsneden van de ramen, de ruimte is een dichte mal), maar er beweging voor terugkrijgt. Beweging is onlosmakelijk verbonden met de ruimtelijke ervaring.

Voor het project De Zonnehof (2007) maakt Lourens diverse maquettes: een in de vorm van de genoemde kaartenbak, een traditionele van het hele gebouw en twee gesloten, massief ogende maquettes waarvan één de vorm is die ontstaat wanneer de mal van de negatieve maquette met materiaal wordt gevuld. Bij de gesloten modellen is elke mogelijkheid om door middel van beweging de ruimte te ervaren verdwenen. Naast de verschillende maquettes van De Zonnehof maakt Lourens foto’s van het binnenste van de negatieve maquette die hij vervolgens laat printen en op aluminium platen plakt. De foto’s missen echter de fysieke ervaring die de kaartenbakken bieden wanneer de vingers door de ruimte wandelen.

Voor z.t. (La Lue - film) uit 2002 gebruikt hij de foto’s van een negatieve maquette om de ruimte weer te vergroten tot een menselijke maat en te ontsnappen aan de kleine en besloten ruimte van de kaartenbak. De papieren scans worden frontaal gefotografeerd en op groot formaat achter elkaar geprojecteerd met een vast tijdsinterval. Het resultaat is een langzaam verlopende film waarin je als toeschouwer de ruimte wordt ingetrokken totdat het beeld van het laatste vel papier als het ware verdampt in de witte gloed van het projectielicht. Daarmee introduceert Lourens opnieuw een vorm van beweging in zijn architectuurmodellen. De projectie is echter nog te klein (niet één op één) en de beweging te langzaam en te veel langs één as om werkelijk van een ruimte-ervaring te kunnen spreken.

VOGELVLUCHT Lourens heeft de onderdelen van het La Lue-project verschillende malen en op diverse locaties geëxposeerd. Bij een aantal van deze exposities heeft hij bij

THE ARTIST AS ARCHITECT Oscar Lourens employs photography and film as means to bring the reduced space back to human dimensions. For the exhibition ‘Vormen van aarden / Ways to root’ (Apeldoorn, 2005) he draws upon the principle of magnification: using a scaffold construction and whitewashed plywood plates, Lourens creates ‘a new house for Helene’. Referring to the live-sized pinewood-with-cloth models that Helene Kröller-Müller had built on the Ellenwoude mansion near Wassenaar, which functioned as studies for the to-be-built museum. Likewise, Oscar Lourens’ creation is a blown-up but otherwise exact replica of one of the models of La Lue. But this ‘new house for Helene’ isn’t a study for the future architecture, but a new artistic attempt to realize the miniature model in original size.

In 2005, Oscar Lourens trades his role of artist for that of an architect. For the owners of the La Lue farmstead he designs a square tower of 5 by 5 by 12 metres. The tower with a pointed roof consists of three floors on which two people can cook (ground floor), live (first floor) and sleep (second floor). The dimensions are loosely based on existing rooms in the La Lue buildings. Important to Lourens is also the choice of a compact and slender tower that fits the landscape. The materials, style and position to the other buildings and the landscape are chosen accordingly.

This is the first time Lourens creates a new architectonic space of his own design. Herewith, his miniature art has grown to true architecture in which the wandering spectator/visitor is able to truly experience the actual space. That the building has left the realm of art and entered that of architecture is also clear from the reactions of neighbours and visitors of La Lue. Many of them think the tower is a restored building that has been a part of the farmstead all along. The tower led me to ask Oscar Lourens whether he hadn’t rather chosen for the profession of an architect instead of being an artist. After an initial hesitation, he confirms. This hesitation is very understandable, because my question is like that of the farmer of the Lewis Caroll’s novel, who asked Mein Herr to accept the existing landscape as the best possible map. For is the tower of La Lue not the best means to truly take possession of architectonical space?

de tentoonstellingsruimte een zelfgemaakte wegwijzer geplaatst waarop de naam van en de kilometerafstand hemelsbreed tot La Lue staat vermeld. Op een vergelijkbare wijze als eerdere projecten worden woord en getal ingezet om te verwijzen naar een reële, fysieke ruimte. Ditmaal echter betreft het niet alleen de architectuur van La Lue, maar ook de ruimte die de bezoeker van de tentoonstelling scheidt van het boerderijencomplex in Frankrijk. Op zoek naar een andere manier om deze ruimte in zijn bezit te krijgen, heeft Lourens in de zomer van 2007 het plan opgevat om vanuit La Lue een aantal duiven terug te z.t. (een nieuw huis voor Helene), 2005, Vormen van Aarden, Apeldoorn, 2005

laten vliegen naar Nederland. Eén duif is voorzien van een speciaal hiervoor vervaardigd lichtgewicht gps-systeem waarmee de vlucht exact gereconstrueerd kan worden op een landkaart. Wanneer de vlucht eenmaal bekend is, wil Lourens de route laten navliegen om hem fotografisch vast te leggen. Die foto’s zouden vervolgens weer tot een film gemonteerd kunnen worden, zodat ook hier het element ‘beweging’ direct wordt gerelateerd aan de ervaring van de ruimte. De betreffende duif is echter nooit teruggekeerd en Lourens krijgt pas het volgende vliegseizoen de kans een nieuwe vluchtpoging te wagen.

DE KUNSTENAAR ALS ARCHITECT Lourens hanteert fotografie en film als middelen om de gereduceerde ruimte weer op te blazen tot een menselijke schaal. Voor de tentoonstelling ‘Vormen van aarden’ (2005) in Apeldoorn hanteert hij een ander principe van uitvergroting: hij bouwt met behulp van een steigerconstructie en witgeschilderde underlaymentplaten een nieuw huis voor Helene. Verwijzend naar de modellen van vurenhout en zeildoek op ware grootte die Helene Kröller-Müller op Buitenplaats Ellenwoude bij Wassenaar liet bouwen als voorstudies van een nieuw museumhuis, is het huis een exacte uitvergroting van een maquette die is gebaseerd op een van de gebouwen van La Lue. Lourens’ huis is echter geen voorstudie voor te bouwen architectuur, maar een nieuwe poging om als kunstenaar een miniatuurmodel te realiseren op ‘ware’ grootte.

In 2005 verruilt Lourens zijn rol als kunstenaar voor die van architect. In opdracht van de huidige eigenaren van La Lue ontwerpt hij een vierkante toren van circa 5 bij 5 meter en 12 meter hoog. De toren met puntdak is opgebouwd uit drie verdiepingen waarin twee personen kunnen koken (beneden), wonen (eerste etage) en slapen (zolderverdieping). De maatvoering is losjes gebaseerd op twee bestaande vertrekken van La Lue. Belangrijk vindt Lourens dat het een compacte, ranke toren is geworden die zich naadloos voegt in het landschap.

Met de keuze van materialen, bouwstijl en de positie van de toren ten opzichte van de overige gebouwen is daar nadrukkelijk rekening mee gehouden.

Het is voor het eerst dat Lourens een nieuwe architectonische ruimte creëert op basis van eigen schetsontwerpen. Zijn miniatuurkunst is volwaardige architectuur geworden waarin en waaromheen je als bezoeker al dolend de ruimtelijke werking kunt ervaren. Dat het gebouw geen kunstwerk is maar architectuur blijkt ook uit de reacties die de toren oproept bij de naburige bewoners en bezoekers van La Lue; veel mensen denken dat het een gerestaureerde of herbouwde toren is die al tijdenlang deel uitmaakt van La Lue. Naar aanleiding van de bouw van deze toren vraag ik Lourens tijdens een gesprek of hij niet liever architect had willen zijn. Na enige aarzeling antwoordt hij bevestigend.

De aarzeling is te begrijpen, want het is alsof ik als een boer uit de novelle van Lewis Caroll Mijn Herr vraag of hij het bestaande landschap wil accepteren als de best mogelijke landkaart. Is de toren van La Lue immers niet het beste middel om werkelijk bezit te nemen van een architectonische ruimte?
