T-shirts; Both Qatari girls are causing a storm in the fashion realm with each of their brands. Talking about fashion, we took inspiration from some of the key fashion capitals across the globe to bring you looks to try wherever you travel. We’ve been pretty hectic this month; we put the new Ferrari California through its paces on the roads of Maranello in Italy; indulged in various spa treatments – all for you of course; sampled the new Friday brunch at Ipanema and went to an awesome foam party at Sealine Beach Resort; phew!

Just before we went to press a fire occurred in Villaggio Mall taking the lives of 19 people. GLAM expresses condolences to those who've lost loved ones in this tragic incident.

Hi, Wow! What a fantastic wedding issue Glam! Your May edition was packed with so many interesting and fun articles centered on wedding which happens to be my favourite topic this year as I have mine scheduled in December. The International Wedding Show (iWed 2012) was definitely the must-attend exhibition of this year. I was mesmerised by the beautiful wedding gowns on display. I also liked the compilation of ‘Happiest Wedding Memories’. It was nice reading the cute little stories of their weddings. Dior celebrates its passion for screen goddesses with new book

Rizzoli Editions presents Stars in Dior, a coffee table book that features the most iconic actresses from the world in outfits by the couturier. The book is a collection of 250 images – extracts from movie scenes, photos from the shoots as well as official photos – with commentary by journalist Jerume Hanover. From Marlene Dietrich to Sophia Loren, Grace Kelly, Ingrid Bergman and Elizabeth Taylor, the tome Stars in Dior reveals the most glamorous and elegant outfits worn by the stars of the silver screen. With a preface by French film journalist Serge Toubiana, this art edition also includes actresses of the present like Natalie Portman, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Monica Bellucci, and of course, Charlize Theron, spokesmodel of the house’s “J’Adore” fragrance. The South African actress apprears in the work in a photo by Alexi Lubomirski. Stars in Dior will be available from Rizzoli Editions this September priced at $65.00.

Bulgari, Mulberry and Valentino are just some of the luxury labels to have reinterpreted Queen Elizabeth II’s crown ahead of her upcoming Diamond Jubilee. Luxury London department store Harrods has filled its windows with 31 one-off crowns made exclusively by an array of iconic British and international designers ranging from Paul Smith to Valentino. The creators all reworked the elaborate St. Edward’s Crown, which was worn by Elizabeth for her coronation back in 1953. The likes of Valentino and De Beers went for classically majestic creations – the latter’s features 974 diamonds. Roberto Cavalli dared to be different with fur detailing and Paul Smith referenced HRH’s favorite pet with a miniature corgi detail. Harrods will also be showcasing glamorous gowns by designers including Roberto Cavalli, Valentino and Elie Saab in its windows to mark the upcoming Ballgowns: British Glamour Since 1950s exhibition at the city’s Victoria & Albert Museum.

Jimmy Choo has teamed up with top fashion photographer Eddie Newton to launch new site Choo 24:7 Stylemakers, where both amateur snappers and professionals can upload their street style pictures. Responding to the growing interest in street style photography and the social aspect of sharing fashion via blogs such as Lookbook.nu, 24:7 Stylemakers invites visitors to submit images of themselves wearing Jimmy Choo shoes and accessories in a way that illustrates their personal style. It has echoes of British label Burberry’s successful The Art of the Trench site, which launched back in 2009, inviting photographers (including Scott Schuman of street style site The Sartorialist) and trench coat owners

to submit images of the classic springtime staple being worn by everyday people with panache. A selection of the best Choo pictures will appear at choo247.com, where they can also be shared via social networks including Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. Instagram pictures tagged “#choo247” will also feature. There’s a consumer element too, as visitors can click on a link to shop similar styles via the Jimmy Choo site. Brand ambassadors for major international fashion destinations including Paris, Milan and Tokyo will be revealed within due course, while street style photographer Eddie Newton, of mrnewton.net has launched proceedings as the London ambassador.

Schiaparelli relaunching, creative director guessing games begin

After its recent team-ups with big name labels including Marni and Versace, H&M is taking a different direction with its latest collaboration by joining forces with global style icon Anna Dello Russo. The fashion director at large and creative consultant for Vogue Japan is a fashion week favourite, regularly appearing on bestdressed lists thanks to her extravagant sartorial choices. Her H&M accessories line will hit some 140 stores worldwide and online October 4, comprising jewellery, sunglasses, shoes, bags and a trolley. “I wanted to create precious accessories that are impossible to find. As a stylist I know accessorisation is essential: it is the personal touch to any outfit. With these pieces everybody can have fun, turning an ordinary day into a fantastic fashion day,” said Dello Russo. Other eccentric style icons such as Iris Apfel and Daphne Guinness have also been charming the fashion world recently – Jimmy Choo famously designed a tribute stiletto to the former earlier this year, while there has also been a string of blogger/designer team-ups. Dello Russo is pleased to play such a key role in the increasing significance of the style icon. “I am excited by this collaboration: this is the first time H&M involves a Fashion Director in a special project. This is the sign of an important evolution in fashion, and I am both thrilled and humbled to be the one chosen to lead it,” she enthused.

Following an announcement that the Schiaparelli fashion house will reopen, fashionistas have begun to offer their opinions on who should be the new creative director – with disgraced designer John Galliano one of the most talked about. News of the revival ties in with the launch of the Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations exhibit at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. Ahead of the celebratory Costume Institute Gala event, Italian fashion mogul Diego Della Valle, head of Tod’s SpA group, announced he will relaunch the French fashion house, which has been closed since 1954. He purchased all of Schiaparelli’s trademarks and archives back in 2006. It is expected the new label will focus on accessories, makeup and some clothes. “The idea with Schiaparelli is to propose the brand with all its modernity, and represent dreams, art and all the most sophisticated things we can do,” Della Valle told WWD. “The heart of this project will be the Parisian maison in Place Vendume, in the original location where the first atelier was.” The label’s new creative director won’t be announced until September, and while many fashion experts have been linking former Dior head designer John Galliano to the role, W editor Stefeno Tonchi told nymag.com there are still many creatives in the running. “There are a lot of designers that I think would do a great job,” he said. “Very soon they will make the announcement, so I already know a little bit too much. But I thought that it could be fun to have John back doing it - as in, Galliano. “But you know, that’s too much of a risky proposition probably. At least for America. But I think he’s really talented.” Meanwhile, it is known that French model and filmmaker Farida Khelfa will be the brand’s spokesperson in a similar fashion to Ines de la Fressange fronting Della Valle’s relaunch of French accessories label Roger Vivier back in 2002.

The Face: Naomi Campbell launching new reality show Following in the footsteps of fellow supermodel Tyra Banks, Naomi Campbell has announced she will “discover the next beautiful face of the modeling world” thanks to a new reality show. Scheduled to hit television screens in 2013, The Face will air on America’s Oxygen network, with the 41-year-old British model coaching a group of unknown models as they embark on photo shoots, runway shows and commercials before the eventual winner becomes The Face of a major brand. “I am looking forward to working in partnership with Oxygen and Shine America to discover the next beautiful face of the modeling world,” explained Campbell in a release. “With The Face the audience will get a real insider’s look at this exciting industry that has been so good to me.” Campbell will be one of three model judges, with the remaining two yet to be revealed. Perhaps fellow 1990s supers Cindy Crawford, Eva Herzigova or Helena Christensen could join – Christensen has already helped discover fashion faces of the future via the Crystallized Swarovski Unsigned Model Search. Interestingly, Oxygen also airs the hugely successful America’s Next Top Model series, which is fronted by Banks and now in its 18th season. Since its launch in 2003 there have been versions across the globe, with some of the most famous hosts including Elle Macpherson for Britain & Ireland’s Next Top Model and Heidi Klum on the German edition.

Luxe stationery: Louis Vuitton to ‘pump up’ writing category Despite its increasing innovations in the online arena, Louis Vuitton hasn’t forgotten the art of letter writing, with reports that the French luxury house is planning to expand its stationery offerings with more “paper goods and related paraphernalia.” The expansion plans follow the house’s announcement earlier this year that it will be venturing into the realm of perfume, and is said to tie in with the development of its boutique in Paris’s Saint-Germaindes-Pres literary neighborhood – famous for its past associations with writers such as Ernest Hemingway. While there has not yet been an official announcement, sources told WWD that the leather goods label will be adding to its existing offerings which include pens, agendas and notebooks, with plans to “pump up its writing category.” Other luxury labels to have ventured into the realm of stationery include Tiffany & Co. and Mulberry, while last year Oscar de la Renta revealed its collaboration with US luxury stationery firm Mrs. John L. Strong. The ornate set includes place cards, notecards and invitations adorned in bows and other common Oscar de la Renta motifs. 22 / JUNE 2012

Prabal Gurung’s show was just stunning – his directional yet feminine silhouettes were reworked for spring in fabulous print and colour combinations. I also loved Valentino’s collection which felt really fresh – the beautiful lace espadrilles are top of my wish list.

Qatari fashion designer Waad Ali is swiftly earning a reputation among style conscious locals. Her go-getting attitude, affordable collection, and endearing personality prove to be a recipe for success. In an exclusive interview, Waad gives GLAM a glimpse into her wardrobe and world. By Orna Ballout

Natural Talent Fashion, for some, is something that comes naturally. And this is definitely the case for 26-year-old fashion designer Waad. Although she graduated with a degree in Linguistics and Literature from Qatar University, fashion design has always been her real passion and is now bringing her a fruitful career. “I’ve always been interested in fashion and have fond memories of my mother encouraging me to sketch dress designs I’d like to wear for Eid, which she would then make for me,” Waad reveals. Designing beautiful collections of abayas, dresses, and unique pieces is not all Waad fits into her hectic schedule, as she is also kept busy working as Head Stylist and Designer for the TV Development & Support Committee for Qatar TV. “I finish my stylist job at around 3pm; have a couple hours of rest and schedule appointments with clients between 5 and 9pm everyday except Friday – which is supposed to be my day off!” Cool Collection When GLAM visited Waad’s house, we got a peak at her latest collection ‘Happy’. The eye-catching range

comprises garments showcasing her flair for careful attention to detail. We adored the designs featuring a mix of different materials, embellishments and embroideries. In Waad’s own words, the collection is “lively, fresh, and makes you feel good”. When designing a collection, Waad keeps a typical Qatari girl in mind. “Nowadays, most people want to dress up for occasions in something affordable that looks high-end. It’s about the style of a piece, not the price. I’m trying to bring elegance, sophistication, good quality, sustainable fabric, and amazing prices to my collection. I think that’s what really separates my brand from others.” Future Support As a young entrepreneur, Waad is familiar with the difficulties that starting up a business entails, and it is her ultimate dream to open a flagship store in Doha before expanding across the globe. “I would love if the Ministry of Business and Trade set up a programme to help young entrepreneurs get into the market and establish themselves. If we have government support, it will motivate people and help sustain a local industry.” JUNE 2012 / 33

T

here is no doubt about it, the t-shirt is having a fashion moment. No longer garments you throw on when everything else is in the laundry basket; they have become valued items in every fashion conscious being’s wardrobe, each making a statement of their own. And it looks like Qatar has caught onto the statement t-shirt craze with an influx of t-shirt labels popping up over the past year. But not anyone can call themselves a t-shirt designer. It requires a talent for design, whether that be graphic design, illustration, or embroidery, and an eye for quality when it comes to picking out fabric for the t-shirts. This is something that Qatari t-shirt designer, Mai Al Bdeed, a graphics design graduate from VCU Qatar, knows all too well. In the short space of a year, Mai’s t-shirt label, Ma! Collection, has taken Qatar by storm, with fashionistas clamoring over one another to get one of her designs in their size before they vanish off the rail. What makes them so popular with Qatari fashionistas is that in her designs, Mai uses elements from old Qatari traditions as well as references to modern popular Gulf culture. She also uses humour to poke fun at some of the younger generation’s antics, from the way young men wear sunglasses to look “hot”, to the pictures people take of themselves for their BlackBerry display with the caption “don’t touch my DP,” that verge on the line of being outright ridiculous. The self-confessed coffee and chocoholic sat down with Glam for a chat.

GL AM spotlight How did you come up with the idea of merging your love of graphics design with fashion to produce your own t-shirt line? I never thought about being a fashion designer. I was designing graphic for display pictures on my BlackBerry, and my friends suggested I put them on t-shirts or dresses, so I did. Explain the design process that goes into the creation of Ma! t-shirts. The design process is not easy, as getting good printing quality for the graphics and high quality t-shirts can be difficult. I usually start by thinking up new themes and unique ideas. The next step is to sketch my designs and illustrations and print them onto sample t-shirts. Then I have to decide if the designs work on the t-shirts and study the sizes.

elements from old Qatari traditions as well as references to modern popular Gulf culture. You often include a signature “batoola” in your designs and on your label - what is the story behind that? The “batoola” is our traditional face mask. It was the inspiration behind my collection which I got from the most beautiful woman I have seen in my life, my mum, and she still wears it. It’s a really feminine thing. Your t-shirt designs include many references to Qatari and popular Gulf traditions - how important do you think it is to reflect aspects of your culture in your designs? And do you think this makes customers connect better with your designs? Yes, it sure does. Simply, if it did not reflect my culture it would not be me. I think designing is my way of explaining what I feel as a Qatari girl who lives between two generations: the old

traditional generation of my mother and the modern generation of technology, and this is what attracts my customers. They feel that the designs talk about them. Tell us about your latest collection. The theme was “tanakass”, a famous word used here in parties which means “get down” in the local dialect! I used a lot of glitter in each design and for the first time made blazers with the t-shirts. How should Ma! t-shirts be worn? I think each girl has her own signature style and will know what to wear them with. They can be worn with jeans, skirts and black trousers, and be worn as evening wear by wearing them with extra accessories. Just like there are shoe trends and bag trends, are there international t-shirt trends? Yes, this summer it will be t-shirts in flashy colors like neon green, orange and pink, which can be worn on the beach with shorts. What makes Ma! t-shirts different to all the other t-shirt labels out there? They have my own signature style and a special Qatari touch. I don’t like imitating famous brands because I know that girls now know everything about fashion and I don’t want to do something which is not unique or special. In the past year a huge number of t-shirt designers in the region have launched their own t-shirt lines. Is this a trend that will pass? How can you tell if a t-shirt designer is a real one? It is a trend, just like abaya designers and cupcake chefs! If anyone has the talent they will succeed, and it’s good that there is competition out there in order to encourage me to do my best. A talented designer will pursue their dream even if there are a million other designers. What have you got planned for your next collection? I plan to have a Ramadan collection which uses different traditional designs and fabrics. What are your hopes for the future? I hope to see all fashion-loving girls wearing Ma! Collection and I plan to expand my label to the rest of the Gulf. You will see Ma! Collection in Dubai, Riyadh and Bahrain soon. Wish me luck!

Seeing local men twiddling their rosary beads and wearing them like an accessory is not an uncommon sight in the Islamic world. So imagine what happens when you take prayer beads and turn them into a piece of jewellery.

ome of the best things in life come in pairs and that is definitely the case with design duo Amira Ali Al Dakroury and Somaya Shaker El Refaie, who together came up with the idea of establishing their own jewellery line which takes inspiration from traditional Islamic rosary beads and transforms them into statement jewellery pieces. Based from Qatar and Egypt, Soma Jewelry Designs is the brainchild of Somaya, a sales manager by day and mother to three boys, and her niece Amira, a graduate in graphic design from Virginia Commonwealth University Qatar. While Somaya handles the design aspect, Amira is the brand ambassador in Qatar. Somaya started off by designing and making jewellery for family members and friends, and when Amira caught sight of her aunt’s design talents, she suggested they turn them into a fully-fledged jewellery line, realising the potential of the statement

pieces made from a combination of colourful crystals, pearls, beads and wooden and leather elements would have in Doha. The idea of wearing bracelets, necklaces and anklets that resembled Islamic rosary beads caught on and eight months later the duo’s pieces are selling like hot cakes. “I came up with the idea to establish my own jewellery brand because I wanted to make my free time productive by developing a hobby I’ve always desired,” explains Somaya, “Ever since I was a little kid I always liked making my own accessories out of beads that would fall off a ruined old bracelet or necklace.” The jewellery is a combination of the traditional and the modern, with Islamic and Arabic elements incorporated into the designs. “I took my inspiration from Islamic rosary beads,” says Somaya, “I took that cultural and religious element and made it the main direction of my first collection.” As Somaya says, her pieces look deceptively simple, but a lot of aspects are taken into account when designing them, such as colour, texture, contrast and composition and she personally hand-makes all her designs. So far, the pieces have proven to be winners. “People love the designs and the way they look and feel. They’re new

and old at the same time,” says Somaya. While many of the pieces have a hip, bohemian and folky vibe, with the bracelets best worn in stacks, there are also more blingy pieces perfect for a glamorous night out in town. Somaya and Amira admit that their business may be small, but that does not mean that they have no influence on the fashion world. In fact, they believe that small jewellery businesses like theirs can have just as much sway in shaping the fashion industry. “In the future I would like to see the brand recognised for its simplicity and folk soul,” remarks Somaya, “I would like to spread the idea that affordable designs that derive from a culture of religion and spirituality can be unique too, and as glamorous as any other expensive and modern piece of jewellery.” Their next collection? “There will be more calligraphic influences,” says Somaya, “I will be using famous sayings and proverbs. I throw a quick glance at the beautiful poolside as I walk excitedly towards the Spa, to be greeted by my amicable therapist, Catherine from Bali. Summer Breeze ideally begins with an organic green tea and dead sea salt scrub which is rich in minerals and anti-oxidants, but since I had soft skin, she suggested a softer Jojoba body scrub. Now a “scrub” doesn’t necessarily mean being rubbed with a coarse loofah, is what I learned, as Catherine “gently” begins massaging the jojoba beads oil all over my body. The aroma of the Sodashi’s plant essences is amazing. After a quick shower, I head to the hydrotherapy bath room where a tub of water infused with fire 58 / JUNE 2012

element oil awaits me. I hop in like a kid, and the stream of bubbles that shoot out magically work their way on my neck, back, legs and feet. I feel like a princess, as Catherine places a cup of green tea with honey along with a few dates on a side table. After soaking myself for 20 minutes, I go back for the last part of the treatment – a soothing Sodashi signature earth massage, using one of the five Sodashi elements – fire, wood, earth, water or metal. Catherine suggests “water” – a blend of cardamom, juniper berry, lemon myrtle and lime-perfect for uplifting and enlightenment. They say time flies when you are having fun, and my 150 minutes simply zoomed past. I leave feeling relaxed and reinvigorated, my skin smelling good with the aroma of the oils. I am ready to face the summer!

We are so busy pampering our face that we often forget our neck and decolletage areas which needs attention too especially in summer when they are most exposed. The Six Senses Spa has always intrigued me with its Arabesque decor, the sandy, golden walls lending an earthy and soothing touch to the Spa. My chatty therapist, Jeanne from China, guides me through the maze-like corridors of the Spa, to the therapy room. Since my skin type is between normal and dry, she chooses the products carefully for the facial. She begins with the unrefined, sun-dried white and pink clays blended with French spirulina – I enjoy the mushy feel of the spirulina that is gently rubbed on my face, and then the neck and decolletage. I felt like a princess entering my own private spa at the Ritz Carlton, as the plush surroundings emit an intimate vibe. On the cards was the Detox to Relax package – a treatment combining a body scrub, body wrap and hair therapy. The usual cost of the treatment is QR 800, but the hotel is offering a special 20% discount of QR 600 for 75 minutes. The first part of the treatment consists of a body scrub, and you have the choice between three offerings of Honey, Bamboo or Orange; I opted for the latter and combined it with a warm seaweed wrap. My Bulgarian therapist Emiliya gently worked the sweet smelling scrub over my skin, while telling me about the Natura Bisse

products from Spain the spa uses. The scrub was surprisingly soothing and not at all what I had anticipated. Next, it was the seaweed wrap. I was smothered in an algotherapy mask – a green substance with a jelly like texture, before being wrapped in plastic, and then further covered in blankets. My therapist ensured that it was normal to feel hot and start sweating, and this would really help the ingredients work properly. As I lay like a mummy, a hot oil scalp treatment was carefully rubbed into my hair to help nourish the scalp and stimulate hair vitality. I felt relaxed and true to word – hot – and ready to be unwrapped! I recommend not trying this treatment if you’re claustrophobic! After a quick trip to the shower to wash off my green jelly Shrek lookalike appearance I could already notice a big difference in my skin, which

felt smooth and fresh. The finale was a relaxing short massage using firming cream containing aloe vera, royal jelly and seaweed extracts; it was a welcome ending to the treatment, although I would have preferred longer time spent on this part of the treatment, the massage is always my favourite part. What we liked best:

I highly recommend you try the Carrot & Sesame Body Buff at the uber trendy Bliss Spa. It’s one of their signature treatments, and really is as delicious as it sounds. The first part of the process is being coated in fresh carrots mixed with hot aroma oil. The carrot mix feels strange yet pleasant, and according to my therapist, really helps the skin glow. After this, a combination of hot milk and honey were massaged on to my skin; this part of the treatment is also referred to as the ‘Cleopatra bath’, as she famously bathed in the substances.

The aroma of carrot, hot milk and honey, was very calming. And as you can imagine, being coated in all the above, was very messy. Next it was time to be wrapped for 20 minutes in the silver plastic sheet, followed by blankets, until I was covered from head to toe. I felt warm right away, as an electric blanket underneath me sped up the process to help all the ingredients work before applying the next part of the treatment – the sesame & salt scrub. I felt slightly cold after my wrap, but the therapist soon warmed up my skin with the scrub, which was again delicate on the skin, and not what I was expecting. I made a mess on my way to the Vichy shower, leaving a trail of fresh carrot, milk, honey, sesame and salt in my path! But soon I was shiny, clean, and had skin as soft as a baby.

The final part of the treatment was a light massage using Bliss Spa’s signature body butter which includes shea butter and chamomile. I left the spa feeling relaxed, rejuvenated and ready to take on the world! What we liked best:

Start buffing and scrubbing. If you’re going to bare all, get rid of the dead skin with a good body exfoliator, body and face scrub and don’t forget those feet. Invest in a body brush to gently scrub your skin in the shower everyday or better still book into the salon for a body scrub. Freshly exfoliated skin will help to prolong your tan. 3 weeks to go

Pull in the body fixer helps to shape that figure. Cellulite combating creams or firming solutions will help to smooth your skin so get applying and lose those imperfections. 2 weeks to go

Start fake tanning so you can arrive to your destination with a beautiful and natural healthy glowing tan. Most tanning products contain skincare benefits for the face and body to ensure smooth skin with a bronzed look. Try to use a gradual tanner (which is basically just a moisturiser) with a small amount of the fake tanning ingredient, it will give you a beautiful golden glow. 1 week to go

Pamper yourself with a good mask to leave your skin feeling smoother, fresher and grimeless. It is recommended to do it a week before you leave to help your skin to eliminate any toxins before exposing it to a change in weather and water. Alternatively, for the ultimate pampering treat book yourself in for a full facial treatment at the spa for some deep cleansing and TLC.

We all know polish can chip quickly especially if you are in the pool and reapplying sun cream all day long. Gel polishes won’t chip or peel and will stay shiny and beautiful for up to 2 weeks. Do any waxing around 48 hours before you are due to leave. This will give time for any irritations to calm down and also let your soothe before you expose it to the sunshine. If shaving is your preferred method of hair removal make sure you use a really good shaving cream to help to protect your skin and avoid painful razor cuts. If you want to start your holiday with a darker tan then have a spray tan 24 hours before you are due to leave but make sure you don’t do it on the same day as any hair removal as this may cause a slight irritation. Take your cleanser with you

If you can only take one skin care item from home, let it be your cleanser, an abrupt change in cleansers can disrupt skin’s acid balance and cause a vacation breakout. Lighten the load

Hot humid conditions can cause a breakout of unslightly spots so opt for a lighter gel based moisturiser that won’t get stuck in your pores or better still, a light super hydrating serum would be just perfect for a sun parched thirsty skin.

If you are sitting on the beach don’t be afraid to take advantage of the sand. Beach sand is a great natural exfoliator so gently rub a little on your feet (not too hard, sand can be a little sharp!) to keep them super soft or walk barefoot in the sand when you can. The big chill

If you are heading off to a cooler climate you should consider changing your moisturiser to a slightly heavier one to prevent cold air and harsh winds from causing dryness. To help prevent tangles and split ends keep hair protected from the wind as best you can, tie it up where possible. A deep conditioning mask is also very beneficial when you are in cold temperatures to help keep all those natural oils deep inside the hair follicle.

GLAM discovers there’s no need to escape the country when you’re in need of some time out, as a little slice of heaven is located right on your doorstep.

W

ith holiday season upon us, you’re probably seeking a break that’ll take your mind off the hustle and bustle of everyday life. If you’re looking for a place that offers amazing views, delicious cuisine, and convenient shopping access, then The Torch Doha is a must-visit. The hotel which features contemporary Middle Eastern interiors, boasts the perfect location for both men and women, as it’s nestled between Doha’s largest shopping mall Villaggio, and Aspire – Doha’s grand sports village. There’s even a bridge which connects the hotel to the shopping mall to provide convenient access. When The Torch invited me to stay for one night to experience its offerings, I was excited to see what they had up their sleeve. Having previously conducted a photo shoot there, I knew I would be impressed, but was even more so after spending time in the comforts of a Deluxe Suite. The suite is the ultimate lazy person’s paradise, as thanks to a handy control panel positioned next to the bed, you can do a variety of things with a simple touch of a button; like opening and closing the curtains, and controlling the unique lighting mood system – one of the room’s top features – which allows you to adjust the lighting from a selection of 12 cool colours such as magenta, marine and warm white. Other highlight features include the complimentary mini-bar, with first servings of

juice, soft drinks and water courtesy of the hotel. The bathroom is pretty awesome too; I especially enjoyed the powerful shower and scrumpcious Asprey bath products. There’s a bunch of facilities in the hotel to keep you busy. It boasts state of the art sporting, leisure and spa facilities; although at the time of review, the spa unfortunately wasn’t open to sample. But going by the other facilities, I’m guessing it will be splendid. Make sure you spend time by the swimming pool which offers incredible views of Doha. It was absolute bliss to kick back, relax, and enjoy the sun and lush surroundings. My only negative was that the sun loungers were slightly uncomfortable, as there weren’t any cushions available for them. I managed an hour of tan time, but could have easily lounged there all day. When hunger strikes, there are many restaurants options to tickle your fancy. The Flying Carpet is a good choice; open all day, it serves a huge buffet of various cuisines such as Middle Eastern, sushi, and there are also live cooking stations where the chef can prepare fresh food for you. I enjoyed a tasty omlette breakfast accompanied with freshly baked breads, delicious! It’s worth your while to visit Three Sixty, the unique revolving restaurant located on the 47th floor showcasing mesmerising 360 views of the city; the perfect place to unwind and gorge on delectable cuisine. A new restaurant Panorama is set to open shortly, located on the 50th floor, you can only imagine the amazing views you’ll get up there. All in all, the Torch Doha is a great luxurious retreat to provide you comfort, class, and care when you need that well deserved break away from it all. ts early morning and the sun is rising. Not many are on the beach except for local fisherman and the few who choose to spend their early hours walking or jogging before the masses of sun worshippers invade the quiet solitude. I roll out my mat under the shade of a tree to escape the direct rays of the sun. The waves move towards me drawing the smell of the sea; waves gently cascading against the shore bringing a dependable rhythm to the day, to my practice. Planning our trip to Thailand, I imagined this moment. Instead of practising indoors amongst the sometimes stale air or chill of air conditioners within a studio, I could instead experience the freshness of the morning air throughout my yoga practice. Day by day, year after year, we pass through life going from moment to moment. Walking, driving to and from activities, meetings, to school, home again. We are likely eat the same things, see the same people, and go to the same places. Trying to meet all the demands of our time and energy. This isn’t all bad, but with repetition our life can seem dull in all its sameness. We finish our meals without noticing the flavours and textures. We drive to the mall unlikely to remember what we passed along the way, wondering how we even got there. We go to school, to work. We eat, play, sleep. Travel, however, can be exciting. It appeals to most as it’s a break from all the sameness in our lives. Routine. Part of the success of the novel Eat, Pray, Love by Eliabeth Gilbert is how it touched on a yearning to step away from our ordinary lives. To travel and maybe discover our true selves or true love, like in the book. Visiting new places in the world seems fresh and exhilarating. We seek to understand language, culture. We taste what seem like exotic flavours. We meet people. We expand ourselves, our boundaries. I thought practicing on the beaches in Thailand would be full of wonder, splendour and excitement. Or I might find those magical moments under a brilliant

full moon above the shores of Doha. Or maybe on the balcony of our cruise ship while sailing through the Caribbean last summer. I expected my yoga practice to be enhanced by such exotic surroundings. My experience leading up to the start of my practice may have been, but once I began, the surroundings slipped away. Which is as it should be. The adventure and journey is within. Unless you are a gymnast, dancer or professional athlete you probably haven’t paid much attention to your physical body over the years. How it moves, reacts, feels. And unless you approach your mind in much the same way, as something to watch and discover, you probably don’t notice how it functions on a day-to-day basis. It is said we repeat the same thoughts over and over for most of our days. Unless we’re in a learning mode or perhaps in a new situation or environment we don’t pay much attention to our thoughts at all. Unlike other forms of physical movement or exercise the focus of yoga isn’t on goals, strategies or competition. It is a practice of awareness. We use tools like our breath and our dristi (gaze) to turn our focus and attention inwards. At first our progress might be as simple as our brain connecting a right foot movement with a left arm raise. We may learn enough to engage a particular set of muscles to provide a stable foundation or lift us off the ground. It may evolve into something that not only shows us how our bodies move and feel, but what our underlying thoughts and emotions are in any given moment. Highlight patterns of self-talk moving incessantly in our minds. It may disclose our worries, our fears. We may feel a sense of belonging, coming home. A sense of power, peace or joy. Whether I’m teaching a class, practicing with others or moving on my own in the quiet of the morning, each time I step on the mat it is a journey. What I meet there each day is unique. It allows me to learn, grow and experience the newness of each day. Each moment. Similar to what I look for when I travel to new places. Only with yoga, it’s all here in front of me. I just need to look for it.

For a runway show, Chanel’s creative director of makeup Peter Philips adorned models’ cheekbones with black velvet Chanel logo beauty spots, with style.com reporting stickers recreating the effect will be available for sale in an upcoming line called Collection Versailles de Chanel. Christian Louboutin announces luxury beauty brand launch

fter his trademark towering stilettos inspired what has been dubbed the “Louboutin mani”, shoe guru Christian Louboutin is set to launch a luxury beauty brand in 2013. Christian Louboutin Beaute is being created in collaboration with New York-based company Batallure Beauty, which has previously worked with brands such as Sephora and Marchesa. The designer revealed the venture in an exclusive interview with WWD, and although it is known the line will be global, Louboutin has so far avoided giving away further details about the specific categories he has in mind. It looks like the line will be out of the ordinary though, as when quizzed on a beauty icon that he finds inspiring, the creator responded rather unexpectedly that the 3,300 year old Nefertiti painted limestone bust captivates him. “It’s the most beautiful thing. I stayed like an hour just looking at the bust,” he told the publication. “It’s a perfect beauty and the makeup is quite perfect.” Until now Louboutin remained one of the last big fashion personalities not to have ventured into the realm of beauty, and he follows in the footsteps of Louis Vuitton creative director Marc Jacobs, who just last month announced he has a color cosmetics line in the works.

magine being handed the keys to an ultra expensive, stunning, fast Ferrari to test drive for the day! Surreal, scary and liberating are words best to describe my experience when I put the new Ferrari California through its paces around the winding, steep hills of Maranello, in Italy – the home place of the Ferrari. Before my Italian quest, every person I told about my upcoming trip seemed more than a little jealous, that I would not only be driving a Ferrari, but would also be getting a behindthe-scenes peak in the Ferrari factory – the place where the magic is made. I was ‘ticking one off the bucket list’ and getting the chance to live many of my male companion’s ‘dreams’. And that’s exactly what Ferrari prides itself on, making dream cars for those with an appetite for luxury, and a wallet big enough to afford one. The new Ferrari California combines all the traditional Ferrari characteristics of high performance, cutting-edge design and innovation, yet is a more versatile option for people seeking something sporty, that can be used more often for less extreme use; and this is the case with the Ferrari California as 20% of owners use it on a daily basis. After a tour around the Ferrari factory, and visit to the aluminum plant, I had a deep insight into the amount of skill, time and effort that goes into the making of this machine of precision, and was really looking forward to getting behind the wheel. I was slightly taken aback when I found out I would be travelling alone, as firstly, not being familiar with the Italian roads was playing on my mind, and secondly, having responsibility of a car that does 0-100kph in 3.8seconds was slightly terrifying. The Ferrari California is breathtakingly beautiful, with careful attention paid to detail on both the exterior and interior. There’s an option to have two seats in the back – although don’t count on complete comfort for your passengers, as it looks to be a pretty tight squeeze. As soon as I nestled into the driver’s seat, I felt a rush of excitement run through my veins as I took in the stylish, yet simple interior of the car.

With a push of the engine button, I was ready for action. To get into the spirit, I decided to take the roof down, and with another simple push of a button, the job was done in a swift and quiet fashion. And then I was off. I was in my own little world. You’d think that driving a sports car on narrow, winding roads in the Italian countryside would be a bit of a nuisance for passers by, as you can’t help but put the foot down at any opportunity that arises, whizzing by them and disturbing their peace. This isn’t the case for the Ferrari. People walking, other motorists, and even animals, seem to stop and stare in awe at the exquisite machine. I’m not going to pretend I’m as knowledgeable as Jeremy Clarkson, or even close, as that would be completely telling fibs. But being a ‘Ferraristi’ (the name Ferrari owners can call themselves) for the day, really made me appreciate the Ferrari, especially after seeing how much effort goes into making it. Although I didn’t reach its top speed of 193mph, I gave it my best shot and think it handled both straight strips and bends superbly. I even gave it a bit of an off road challenge. Getting lost in a farmyard with thin, steep, gravel roads of course wasn’t part of the plan though! After a couple hours of driving, I managed to veer off route, as I stupidly had the volume of the satellite navigation turned down for the duration of the trip, thinking it wasn’t working properly. An embarrassing phone call from a Ferrari team member encouraging me to hit the ‘Guide me home’ button soon cleared things up and I was on my way back to safety. The Ferrari handled the challenge well and I made it back in one piece, albeit an hour late than everyone else! If you’re into style, and like unique pieces, then a Ferrari is a good option for you, as no two Ferrari cars are ever really the same; thanks to the Ferrari Tailor Made Service, customers have the option to personalise the car’s exterior and interior as much as their wallet affords. or the first time, I have to agree with competition. Qatar Happening awarded Angsana Spa as the best in the country and I second their opinion. It is by far the best in the country. From the small details to the massage, from the staff to the ambience, all go hand in hand to create a haven of comfort. Starting with the welcome drink, and right from the moment you lie down on the massage lounge and later when you emerge from a comfort induced slumber, you know you are in capable hands. The courtesy of the staff, the efficiency and time management, and the quiet comfort you derive of the whole experience all makes me give a full 10 score for Angsana Spa. Angsana takes its name from a large tree found in the tropical rainforest of Asia. It is best noted for its crown of flowers that burst into a fragrant shower of golden-yellow blooms unexpectedly. “The glorious Angsana beholds the maxim to live life and savour time as it passes relentlessly,” says Jariya Kanjanawong, Assistant Spa Manager, as she walked me through the facilities before handing me over to Kanika, my masseuse for the day. As I lay down, I vowed to savour each moment of the indulgence that I would be subjected to. I was booked for the Hydro Therapy, the treatment that Angsana Spa is famous for, but

at the last minute I opted for a body scrub and a massage, just to know more about the other packages on offer. For those who haven’t experienced Angsana Spa, the Hydro Therapy is one session you should not miss. My last Hydro Therapy experience is akin to enjoying a day at an exotic spa located in a rainforest, with the occasional rain showers peppered with foot massages and body scrubs and more massages. That treatment can be best described as the height of indulgence, as after the session I could barely get back to work! The body scrub was equally invigorating. I loved the way, Kanika, expertly folded and unfolded the sheet around me to make it all seem like an art in itself and taking care not to leave me uncovered during the whole of the session. I chose a honey and oatmeal scrub and it left me shining clean after the scrub. The massage was the tried and tested Javanese massage. After a couple of months of meeting deadlines, my neck and shoulders were stiff with tension knots. Kanika laboriously massaged her way through them, alternating from slight to medium pressure. The knots were so stiff, she had a tough time kneading them out and I have to tell you it wasn’t such a pleasant experience for me either. But after the hard work, and a hot shower, I felt renewed and raring to go. The constant shoulder ache that was bothering me the last couple of weeks had miraculously vanished. riday brunch has become a sort of ritual in Doha, and if you are yet to experience one, I highly recommend you jump on the bandwagon. There’s nothing better than getting together with friends after a long week in the office, to enjoy good company, food and drinks – the ultimate occasion to let your hair down. And with Doha’s burgeoning hotel industry, it’s fair to say we’re really spoiled for choice with places to avail of brunch. The newest entry to the brunch market is Ipanema, a Brazilian Churrascaria located at the Renaissance City Center Hotel. I predict that it will soon become one of the popular brunches in town, thanks to its colourful decor, vibrant atmosphere, delicious cuisine and cocktails, awesome live Brazilian band, and what’s more, the attentive staff who are super speedy at topping up your drinks. When you visit Ipanema, pace yourself at the gourmet salad and side bars that include a selection of tasty Brazilian side dishes, imported cheeses and cured meats; as the best part of the meal is the Churrasco – a selection of 15 cuts of fire roasted meats, that are brought to your tables by the ‘Passadores’ (commonly known as

waiters), sliced and served in an exciting fashion off large skewers. The waiters can easily identify when you want more, as Ipanema has a cool concept to make things easier for everybody. On your table, you’ll notice circular cards with one side coloured red and the other green. Simply keep your card on the green side up when you want the Passadores to continue serving meats such as spicy Linguica, char-grilled chicken and lamb, and when you’re stuffed, flip the card over to the red side. I regretfully got carried away enjoying the salads from the starters bar, and couldn’t handle the amazing Churrasco of chicken, beef, lamb and duck. It was heart breaking to flip my card to red when I could stomach no more! Ipanema’s vibrant atmosphere is enhanced by Tocandira, the live Brazilian band who recently joined the team; their mix of soothing and funky beats help transport your mind and soul to the heart of Brazil. Unfortunately I only had the opportunity to browse the dessert bar, as I think the word ‘stuffed’ is an understatement of how I was feeling after the feast. There is, however, a huge range of desserts for all you sweet tooth fans, and I’ll definitely be leaving some room on my next visit! You will also be spoilt for choice with an assortment of European delicatessen, freshly baked breads and pastries, Mediterranean antipasti, meats from the deli and charcuterie selection, organic beverages to choose from in addition to stylish homewares and premium gifts and hampers on display. “The primary senses that food appeals to is what you see, smell and taste; jones the grocer

combines all three elements. The store is visually aesthetic and you can see everything being made fresh, you can smell the bread being baked, and the taste is high quality – all this at a reasonably good price,” says John Manos, Director of jones the grocer. “We work with suppliers all over the world who follow the same philosophy like ours when it comes to products – they need to be handmade, natural, preservative and additive free to ensure the highest standard of quality and flavour.” While John’s favourite pick is the cheese plate with olives, we highly recommend the scrumptious mini beef burgers and the heavenly blueberry tarts. ou probably know him as the man behind the successful song Rise Up, which managed to raise his popularity across the world. When Swiss DJ Yves LaRock came to W Doha to perform at Crystal Lounge, GLAM took the opportunity to get to know him a little better, and discovered that despite his party persona, he’s a family guy at heart.

What do you love most about your job?

I love sharing happiness with people. It’s pleasant to see people happy, and when someone tells me at the end of a gig they’ve had a great night, that means I’ve done my job well. Has music always been your calling?

I’ve always made music for pleasure but never expected it to be my life so was working as a biologist, nothing to do with music! One day I was able to quit and do what I wanted to do. What’s your biggest source of inspiration?

It’s difficult to say, nowadays I compose a lot of music on the plane as I’m always travelling, which is very inspiring in itself. What three items can you not travel without?

My laptop, Iphone and a good book. Where is your fave place in world to relax?

I always relax around the swimming pool! With my job, I get the chance to travel to so many great places around the world. I go to the US a lot, but I love Ibiza during the summer, it’s a special place. Any exciting travel plans for the year?

Touring, always touring! After Doha, I’ll be travelling to Switzerland, India and Romania. What’s your best holiday memory?

South of France with my family and friends when I was younger – it was great. What’s the ultimate dream for Yves LaRock?

To stay on the same level; in the music business today you can go up and down very quickly. Who do you look up to in the music industry?

I’m big fan of Luuciano, he’s a bit more underground but very groovy. I also like the Swedish House Mafia. Tell us about the man behind the music.

I’m totally normal. I do my own shopping and cooking! Aside from music, what do you enjoy?

Spending time with my wife Christina, we recently had a baby who takes up a lot of my time. I also enjoy watching movies, reading, and cooking for family and friends. Share your top tips for youngsters interested in getting onto the industry.

The Massive Summer

Foam Party At GLAM, we’re suckers for a party, especially when there’s foam involved! When we got word that Sealine Beach Resort and Red Apple were holding a summer foam party, we were straight on to it!

And oh what a night it was! Attendees were kept entertained with cool rhythms straight from Ibiza’s Divas on Decks, Diane Isabelle, and Rachel on violin. Team the great music with huge foam machines, a cool lighting system and lots of high spirits and the result is an awesome night out. GLAM can’t wait for the next party; see you all there!
