Recipient of the 2021 Orvis Breaking Barriers Award, Georgia’s Durrell Smith perfectly personifies someone who has gone above and beyond to bring new communities into wingshooting by breaking down barriers and introducing new audiences to a sport we are so passionate about. An upland guide and bird dog trainer, Smith founded the Minority Outdoor Alliance, a pioneering voice in connecting Blacks with others in the hunting community. A sportsman who lives what he speaks, Smith proudly carries on the lineage of Southern quail hunting and dog training, giving voice to the influential role of Blacks in Southern sporting traditions. “As a writer, illustrator, bird dog trainer, and podcast host, I am somehow creatively attracted to the rhythms and motions of a bird dog traversing the woods, pulling with both front paws, and back legs pushing like pistons through the pine wood,” says Durrell. “When I think of beauty, I think of the uplands, and I’d rather not think of uplands that do not contain my gun dog. We should want to learn to know our dogs, and through that, learn to know ourselves a bit better.”
