It has been another year of Lingnan University’s continuous advancement in research and knowledge transfer (KT) work. According to the QS Asia University Rankings 2020, Lingnan’s score of Citations per Paper has risen from 76.2 to 78.4, which is a further step up from 42.3 to 76.2 in the year before, representing a jump of 29 places from 117th to 88th in that year, and a leap of 140 places over the preceding year. In QS terms, Lingnan “performed among the top 21% in the QS Asia University Rankings 2020”.
Further encouraging records are marked in the Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings 2020 that Lingnan University is ranked world 2nd for Quality Education which measures the social and economic impact of universities based on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Among these goals, Lingnan is also among the Top 50 in promoting NO Poverty and Top 100 in promoting Decent Work and Economic Growth. Such international recognitions underpin Lingnan’s core values – Education: Care for Learning, Research: Impact with Care.
With Lingnan’s particular strengths in research and knowledge transfer (KT) of high social value and relevance, cumulative income received in 2018/19 from social projects, and the total contract value of on-going projects, were at record high of $14 million and $101 million, representing increases of 84% and 102% respectively. Of these, two are new projects funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust at a total of $48 million. Overall, the total income received from KT projects and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses rose by 142% from $30 million in the previous year to $74 million. We are glad to see our keen effort bearing fruits in our apt response to changing needs for professional skills in the job market, and our new master’s programmes in health & social services management and comparative social policy having won the UGC Fellowships for Taught Postgraduate Programmes.
We shall continue to make bold and innovative moves to build on our strengths to excel in scholarship and better serving society.

$14.9 billion a year
Hong Kong employees play truant from work for an average of 8.3 days a year, incurring annual economic losses of $5.3 to $14.9 billion, according to a recent study led by Prof Siu Oi-ling. This survey forms part of the research conducted by Lingnan on the “Influence of Work Stress on Society and Economy in Hong Kong”, commissioned by the Occupational Safety and Health Council.
She suggests the government to take the lead in encouraging communication between employers and employees, and employers to provide adequate support for their staff, including updating equipment and supplies, more on-the-job training and flexible work arrangements - measures to enhance the worklife balance.
The study was widely covered in media channels such as The Standard, Hong Kong Commercial Daily, Hong Kong China News Agency, Oriental Daily News, Headline Daily, Ta Kung Pao, Hong Kong Economic Times, Wen Wei Po, Economic Digest, Liberty Times Net and QS WOW News.
Prof Siu says stress at work can lead to absenteeism, family issues or feigned sickness and thus economic losses.

Embracing the young and the old is quite a unique feature of many Lingnan University Knowledge Transfer (KT) projects where much intergenerational work is involved. This is built on our strengths in KT generated from research of high social relevance, and our conviction as a liberal arts university that for the people whom we seek to benefit in making knowledge and innovations work for their needs, we treasure their ideas and participation, whether they are from different generations or walks of life. The concept of humanities in innovations will pervade the Four Focus Areas of our KT endeavours in the new triennium 2019-22 - Social Innovations, Gerontechnology, Rediscovering Heritage, and Greater Bay Area.
With the generous donation of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charitable Trust which supports our “We Care, We Serve & We Learn @ Tuen Mun” Programme, the Office of Service-Learning (OSL) organised the I-Gen Series 2018 to enable university students, secondary school students and the elderly to come together to learn about the concept of social innovation, explore new projects for the ageing population and benefit from being trained as social leaders. Exciting activities in which these participants might not have the opportunity to take part as a team before include:
• visiting the co-working space “Dream Impact”, a community that gathers social entrepreneurs to promote innovative thinking and the concept of social enterprise
• getting some ideas of the business operations and visions of different start-ups
• designing a diverse intergenerational community project under the guidance of Dream Impact facilitators

In a social environment where people of different generations struggle to appreciate each other’s views, these KT activities offer precious chances for the seem-to-be disparate groups of the young and old to learn, innovate and grow together - not only in terms of skills, but also, importantly, in terms of understanding each other’s ways of thinking, and thus promote social understanding
With the nomination for the HKSAR Chief Executive’s Community Project List, our Asia-Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies (APIAS), the flagship centre of Lingnan in promoting active ageing and providing elderly care training, is supported by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust with a donation of $19.68 million for the “LU Jockey Club Gerontechnology and Smart Ageing Project” which runs for three years over 2019-2022.
Led by Prof Ka Ho MOK , our Vice-President and Lam Man Tsan Chair Professor of Comparative Policy , the project aims to promote Gerontechnology and support smart ageing Socialpreneurship development. It serves as an educational platform to provide training courses and workshops on “Gerontechnology in Healthcare, Dining, Living and Transport”.
Healthcare Dining Living Transport
Lingnan is teaming up with government and business organisations, and providers of healthcare and social services to launch a wide array of initiatives such as:
• LU Jockey Club Gerontech-X Lab
• Gerontechnology Practitioner Training Courses
• Socialpreneur Incubation Courses
• Gerontechnology & Socialpreneurship Incubator
• Gerontechnology Public Seminars
• Gerontechnology Mobile Lab
• Social Enterprise Intelligent Hub
Building an age-friendly community is a mission put into action by APIAS. Significant projects being conducted in the reporting year included the following which together have so far benefited more than 18,000 people and 300 households:
• Jockey Club Age-Friendly City Project (Pilot Phase), $7.13 million
• Jockey Club Age-friendly City Project (Phase Two), $7.12 million
• Jockey Club Intergenerational Communication and Health Promotion Programme, $8.8 million
The “Business Genius in Silver Age” project which is newly funded by the Elder Academy Development Foundation will provide our senior citizens with new learning opportunities in multimedia production.
Establishing the LU Jockey Club Gerontech-X Lab on the Lingnan campus in Tuen Mun is a significant milestone. It is the first lab of its kind in the New Territories West area, with indoor and outdoor facilities spanning an area of 2,000 square feet where the elderly can try out gerontechnology products on the spot. In turn, the user experience recorded will plough back to baseline studies for building a database on Gerontech products and services, social innovations and start-ups, and thus addressing the actual needs of the users and contributing to our vision in offering policy recommendations for the industry and Government.
Woo Fung, honorary fellow of Lingnan University, shared his experience in using smart products and encouraged fellow elders to memorise phone numbers as a way to train up their memory. The over-80-year-old said he was living his best life through lifelong learning.
Lingnan University endeavours joined hands with RTHK Radio 5 to organise this first ever two-day, one-night university camp for 100 seniors, bringing together Lingnan student ambassadors and 90 secondary school students to fill the Lingnan campus with energy.
Exciting opportunities that gerontechnology can bring in enhancing elderly care were enthusiastically shared by Dr LAM Ching-choi, Executive Council Member and Chairman of the Elderly Commission

‘HealthCare with eHealth’ Public Seminar
Mr Clube NG, CEO of eHealth Research Institute Limited , and Mr Ivan WAN, co-founder of Qualify Hong Kong Limited were invited to share their experience in the use of technology in healthcare management and to promote innovative gerontechnology products and services for domestic use.
A Sharing Session cum Certificate of Recognition Presentation Ceremony was held to raise public awareness towards older people residing in the Tuen Mun and Yuen Long rural areas in this university-led district-based programme. There was sharing of experiences and good practices, as well as recognition for Rural Befrienders of this project.
It was a ground breaking move of the University to set up the Lingnan Entrepreneurship Initiative (LEI) - a collaborative platform to develop students into social entrepreneurs in a liberal arts context and to cultivate an entrepreneurial culture on campus. Unlike conventional entrepreneurship centres working on inventions of science and technology for the development of commercial products, the LEI well distinguishes itself in what it nurtures students to:
• create holistic and practical solutions to real-world problems with a human-centred focus, so that there is the humanistic touch to fill possible gaps in pure technology considerations;
• innovate together with the elderly in intergenerational projects for the ageing population, so as to (i) move beyond the traditional thought that entrepreneurship is only the young people’s business, (ii) unlock the creativity of the aged, and (iii) develop products and services that have the participation of the potential beneficiaries, and for their actual needs.
Entrepreneurship at Lingnan echoes what many liberal arts universities like to quote: “It is in Apple’s DNA that technology alone is not enough—it’s technology married with liberal arts, married with the humanities, that yields us the results that make our heart sing.” (Steve Jobs: “Technology Alone Is Not Enough”)
Collaborative work space is available on campus for a creative and dynamic community of potential social innovators and entrepreneurs to incubate their projects/ start-ups.
The Hub has been established in collaboration with member institutions of the Global Liberal Arts Alliance (GLAA), and the Alliance of Asian Liberal Arts Universities (AALAU) as initiated by Lingnan. It will be a pioneer in Asia to foster students’ competence in creativity, STEM knowledge and spirit of entrepreneurship.
This 2-day workshop was first organised at Lingnan in 2019. More than 40 participants from 8 different countries and 10 Hong Kong NGOs and co-working spaces were attracted to learn more about design thinking and how it can be effectively integrated into the university classroom.
Participants of this programme which took place in Hong Kong and Almaty, Kazakhstan in 2019 gained a deeper understanding of Sustainable Development Goals, develop better research skills in humanitarian work, and receive hands-on training in areas such as arduino, 3D-printing, autonomous devices and underwater robotics.
Lingnan University hosted this annual conference of the Global Liberal Arts Alliance (GLAA) in December 2019 at which more than 40 chief members and scholars from GLAA member institutions gathered to
discuss Humanitarian Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Sustainable Development Goals Impact through ServiceLearning. Graduation badges were also presented to the University Innovation Fellows on the occasion.
A team of Lingnan students from the Master of Science in eBusiness and Supply Chain Management programme won the merit award of The 5th Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition with their “BB Plan” project.
For a stronger synergy of Lingnan’s efforts in responding to the advocacy of the HKSAR Chief Executive and the UGC for innovation, entrepreneurship and commercialisation of research outputs, the Office of Research Support (ORS) has rolled out this new Fund which incorporates the internal KT Project Fund (KPF) and Entrepreneurial KT Fund (EKT), and a new scheme to support faculty members’ entrepreneurial initiatives.
The former KPF and EKT have funded 50 projects and proven to be effective catalysts of innovative ideas for translating research into impact. The new IIF is designed to take the step forward by building an innovative culture and a supportive environment for innovations and social entrepreneurship. Students and staff may use the fund to develop prototypes for a new product or to prove a new concept leading to or aimed at a start-up for impact on humanity.
Two programmes under the IIF:
a) KT Programme
b) Entrepreneurship Programme Faculty Stream Student Stream
To honour the achievements of our faculty and to fuel the energy of research and impact, the Office of Research Support organised the University’s second Research and Knowledge Transfer Excellence Awards Presentation Ceremony in 2019. Academics were presented awards for their exemplary cases as supported by our KT Project Fund (KPF) in extending their research findings and expertise to achieving outstanding social and cultural impact.

Responding to the exciting development opportunities that the GBA may present, Lingnan and the South China University of Technology (SCUT) bring together social scientists with a wide variety of disciplinary skills and experience to co-launch this Joint Centre. Under the four interconnected themes - Well-being and Quality of Life, Higher Education, Innovation & Entrepreneurship, Economic & Social History , and Comparative Bay Area Studies , the Joint Centre serves as a platform for faculties, students, policy analysts and practitioners in the wider community to engage in research and KT projects on understanding the people in the 11 cities in the Area as they become more mobile in the region and what will then be the implications for social policy and governance.
The first release of research findings by the Joint Centre in the project “Surveys on Youth and University Students’ Perceptions on Development Opportunities in the Greater Bay Area” was broadcast by the TVB and widely cited by media channels such as the Hong Kong Economic Journal, Ming Pao Daily, Sing Tao Daily, Bastille Post, THINK HK, Orange News, Wen Wei Po, Headline Daily and Hong Kong China News.
Professor Ka Ho MOK, Dean of School of Graduate Studies and Co-Director of this LU-SCUT Joint Research Centre, was invited by the Professional Development & Training Division of the Education Bureau, HKSAR Government to provide professional training for more than 100 school teachers to prepare them to go for field visits in the GBA. Prof Mok shared about the policy context, development strategies and recent developments of the GBA, and how Hong Kong young people perceived and evaluated the development opportunities in the GBA based on the above-mentioned joint survey with SCUT.
In timely response to ageing issues in the GBA, Lingnan and Wuyi University signed an Agreement of Collaboration for the establishment of this Centre to jointly conduct research on elderly policies in the mainland and Hong Kong and to provide recommendations to the authorities.
