CHANGE LIVES AND VOLUNTEER IN UGANDA 2011 - 2012

Uganda Experience Ugandan life first-hand, as you are offered the chance to meet many new people and soak up local culture. Based in the South District of Uganda, volunteers will feel rewarded as they experience the chance to improve the local quality of education whilst volunteering in this small but growing local nursery and primary school.

Assist the local teacher with classes, organise arts and crafts and outdoor activities. With ever increasing student numbers, every extra pair of hands is needed. You will be left feeling fulfilled as you have played a pivotal role on this project and see the smiles on the children’s faces because of the care and affection that was provided by you.

Many volunteers helping in Uganda also take time out to go trekking to see the famous gorillas in the mist. It is an amazing experience that you won’t soon forget. Having the opportunity to get so close to such beautiful creatures is a sure delight.

Your role as a Volunteer

Getting around

Living at this friendly project, volunteers will gain a thorough insight into every aspect of education and care for the children. The main role of the volunteer is to teach to the children in the on site nursery and primary school. Volunteers assist the local teacher with spelling, writing, simple maths and English. Confident volunteers may have the opportunity to take a class of their own and teach English or organise fun activities. In the nursery school volunteers will organise and assist different games and activities along with nursery rhymes and reading. Volunteers also get involved with breakfast, meal times and supervising outdoor play.

In Uganda, most volunteers spend their free time on site, relaxing at the accommodation. A local town can be easily reached on days off, for basic shops and facilities.

Local support In Uganda, there is plenty of local support, including: the local coordinators, the project manager, and local house staff. They are all on hand should you need help or assistance with anything.

Free time

Skills and experience There is no experience necessary for volunteering in Uganda. As long as you love the achievement of working with children and have plenty of energy and enthusiasm, you will be totally fine.

During their free time, most volunteers choose to take the trek to see the mountain gorillas. These can easily be set up and arranged with the help of the local co-ordinator or the tourist office after arrival.

Health

Overview On arrival

There is a doctor close by and a hospital should you need the use of one, the project manager will help you with your transfer there.

The nearest airport to the project is Entebbe. An airport pick-up can be organised for you when we receive your flight details.

Accommodation included There are three different types of accommodation available in Uganda. These are the main volunteer house, a Banda (an African style hut) and a Modern Style Banda. Volunteers usually share a room. Each room has a manual shower, internet is available and there is a pool table and TV and DVD player.

Food Meals are currently provided. Shortly, when the new kitchen is complete, this project will become self-catering. At the moment volunteers can pre-order a freshly cooked local meal in the on-site cafĂŠ. Weekly shopping trips will in future be arranged to the nearby town so that volunteers can go and buy their own shopping to take back to the house to prepare.

Not on your own Although some volunteers travel with friends, the bigger majority travel alone. It is possible to get in contact with other volunteers before your travel, and a lot of people tend to do this. Some volunteers even plan to travel together and set this up themselves before they depart.

Project resources and advice Although volunteers are not required to bring anything wit them, this project does lack some of the basic teaching materials. Volunteers are encouraged to bring as much as they can from home from books with activity ideas, which can give volunteers ideas of what to do with the children to crayons, colouring books, word search books, simple maths books and arts and crafts items. Sports equipment from footballs to skipping ropes will be a fantastic asset.
